Chapter 18
I would've let the kiss last a little bit longer but a familiar scream caused me to break away. I turned frantically searching for Chloe. It didn't take long to spot her. Everyone had quit what they were doing to stare. She emerged from the woods drenched in blood.
I broke away from Ian and was at her side in a flash. She tried to speak through her heart wrenching sobs.
"He's dead," was all I could decipher from her babbling sobs.
"Who?" I gasped even though I had a feeling I knew who she meant.
"Kai," she sobbed into my shoulder. Kaitlin broke away from her friends and took off into the woods to find her twin.
"Kaitlin, wait!" I called out. Ian was at my side once again. Although he was still drunk off the fairy blood, I could tell he knew something was wrong.
"Stay with Chloe." I ordered him. I gently pushed her to him and sped off after Kaitlin.
I could hear her calling out for her brother in the distance. The scent of his blood grew stronger as I neared the spot where he had died. What had happened? Once I reached his body I received my answer.
Kaitlin was on her knees wailing over the remains of her brother. He was tore to pieces by another werewolf, but who? I scanned the area looking for clues. An explosion came from the direction of the bonfire. Multiple screams filled the night air.
I ran back to the party to investigate leaving Kaitlin to mourn. The bonfire had exploded somehow. Bodies lay lifeless everywhere. The ones that were still alive had scattered. Some were running back towards the school while others cried over their lifeless friends.
I stood in complete shock as I scanned the bodies for familiar faces. It was mostly werewolves and witches.
"Josie!" I heard Ian yelling my name through the thick smoke.
"I'm over here!" I screamed back over all the commotion. He grabbed me looking me over for injuries.
"I thought you..." his voice trailed off. He didnt make an attempt to hide the relief in his voice.
"Im fine. Where's Chloe?"
"She is headed back to the school. I walked her halfway. Then came back to make sure you was okay." He admitted. I watched his pained expression as he looked at the numerous bodies laid out in the field.
I could tell he was thinking back to the death of his parents. I grabbed his hand and pulled him back toward the school. The smell of burnt flesh haunted us all the way back to the school.
Silus was at our side in a flash. Dimitri and Amelia approached us not far behind.
"Are you two okay?" Silus asked looking us over.
"Yeah we are okay but theres alot of bodies back there.." my voice cracked.
"I'm going to check it out." Dimitri announced.
"Is Chloe..." Amelia started to ask.
"She's safe," I assured her. Silus's eyes traveled down to mine and Ian's laced fingers. I'd almost forgotten we were holding hands. A small smile played on his lips then disappeared as he remembered the situation we were all in.
"I'm going to go help Dimitri. Ian, take my daughter to her dorm and stay there until I return."
Chloe was still sobbing when we made it to the dorm. The blood that covered her face, arms, and chest was now dry. She sat in the floor next to her bed.
"Chloe," I whispered softly. Ian stayed by the door glancing out every few seconds. I sank to my knees so she and I were eye level.
"They came out of nowhere." Chloe cried reaching out and clutching my arms. I pulled her into a hug and let her sob.
"Lets get you cleaned up," I murmered after she grew quiet. I wanted to give her time to calm down before questioning her.
In the bathroom I scrubbed her arms and face gently with a rag. She stood stiff and quiet staring at her own reflection. Once I was done I ran her a hot bath. I left the bathroom to give her privacy.
Ian was still standing where I'd left him watching out the door like a guard dog. I walked to my bed and sank into it. I felt so helpless. I was supposed to protect everyone but somehow I'd let them all down. At least half the school was dead and there was nothing I could do to stop it.
"I really thought you had gotten killed." Ian said his voice thick with emotion.
"I didn't think you would care." I sighed. The effects of the fairy blood had obviously worn off. Either that or the attack had snapped him back to reality.
"Of course I care. That's the problem. I dont want to care."
"Why? Is it so bad to care about someone?"
"Because I can't lose anyone if I don't care." He admitted. Before I could answer Silus stormed in.
"This was Anna's doing." He informed us.
"How can you be sure?" Ian asked.
"Kai was ripped apart by a hellhound. Probably a gift from Hades himself. The explosion was caused by a dark hex that was put on the fire. Anna used the same hex last time she attacked the school. This was just a warning shot. I hate to see what the finale will be. When Chloe is ready I need you three to meet me in my office."
When he left, we sat in silence. I couldn't help but think of the kiss we had shared before the night had turned into a nightmare. His lips had felt right against mine. Like they belonged. I admired him out of the corner of my eye.
He looked exhausted. His black hair was a complete mess. Black soot from the exlosion covered his face and white shirt. His big stormy eyes were blood shot from all the smoke. Yet he still looked breathtaking. I couldn't help but feel a little excited that he'd been worried about me.
Chloe finally emerged from the bathroom. She was dressed in a wrinkled night gown she had undoubtedly found in the bathroom floor. All of Kai's blood had been scrubbed off along with all of her makeup. Her usually spiked pixie hair lay flat on her head.
"Silus wants us to come to his office when your ready." Ian informed her gently. I was surprised how nice and understanding he was being. Chloe just nodded in silence. We all three headed to his office.
I could hear Evelyn's usual shrill rant coming from the office. We entered the office to find all the teachers discussing the nights events.
"You had something to do with this, didn't you?" Evelyn accused pointing her long finger in my face.
"Enough, Evie!" Silus roared rising to his feet. She put her hand down and backed into the corner in silence.
"Just ignore the old hag, Josie." Dimitri whispered. Amelia hugged Chloe tighy against her.
"Where is Merrick?" Dimitri asked.
"He is trying to reach Kai's parents." Silus answered quietly glancing at Chloe.
"So what do we do now?" Amelia asked quietly.
"We fight back," Silus answered.
