Chapter 15
Amelia cut the cord severing the last connection between the dark witch and her child. The baby cried in protest as it was handed over to another fairy who bathed it carefully.
"Please let me hold her," Anna panted as beads of sweat rolled down her perfect face. In that moment she looked completely vulnerable.
Silus entered the room gazing at the wailing newborn. He glared at Anna with hatred.
"You picked a bad time to attack the school, Anna. I'm guessing going into labor wasnt part of the plan. Do you know how many dead students and professors I've had to personally carry out of this building!" He roared. His fangs protruded from his lips angrily.
She didnt bother to answer. She couldnt take her eyes off of baby. Once the baby was clean, the fairy handed her back to Amelia.
"Did you get to the boy in time?" Amelia asked as she snuggled the infant.
"Yes, Ian is safe in my room. I gave him the elixir you made. It put him right to sleep."
"Good."
"Can I hold my child now?" Anna growled through her tears. Her body was too weak to produce any power at the moment.
"No." Silus snapped. He carefully took the child from Amelia and hugged her against him. The baby closed its eyes peacefully.
"Silus, give me my daughter."
"No. I'm going to make sure you never see her again. I'm going to protect our daughter from you and all the evil that follows you."
My eyes fluttered open. I scanned the room trying to process my surroundings. I was in my dorm. I sat up in confusion, I was still in the dress Chloe had gave me.
"Oh good you're up!" Amelia squealed. I jumped unaware that she was in my room. She rushed to my side shoving a glass of blood in my face. I drank it without protesting.
"How did I get here?" I asked. My mind replayed the events from last night.
"Ian carried you after you fainted."
"Ian did?"
"Yeah I'm pretty sure he has a thing for you." She giggled.
"He hates me. Oh no, today is the first day of classes!" I realized in horror. I jumped out of bed in a full on panic.
"Classes aren't for another thirty minutes." She laughed.
"Oh, well good! So um did you really feel what you said last night?"
"Yes. I'm so sorry, Josie."
"Its okay. Did you deliver me when I was a baby?" I blurted out before I could stop myself. She seemed surprised. I could tell I had caught her off guard.
"Yes I did. Who told you?"
"I had a dream....."
I gasped as I remembered the last part of the dream. Silus was my father. How could that be possible? Why would he be involved with my mother? I thought she was the enemy. I decided not to tell Amelia about that part of the dream.
Once she was convinced I was okay she left me so I could get ready. I slipped on a pair of jeans and a regular black tshirt. It was a big difference between the way I'd dressed last night. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and left my face bare. I didn't have much time to dress up today.
I rushed off to my first class. It was literally called Vampire 101 with Dimitri. News had traveled fast. As I walked through the halls I could hear all the whispers. Everyone was flabbergasted over last night's events. Some still whispered about it being a dark magic trick. Others were in awe of me being some sort of hero.
This sensitive vampire hearing was becoming a curse. I did my best to block out the gossip. Dimitri's classroom was surprisingly small. There were only about eight vampires already seated. I found an empty seat behind everyone else. Dimitri was just about to speak when Ian sauntered into the room. Dimitri raised his eyebrows in surprise.
Ian coming to class must be a rare occasion. He took the only empty seat, beside me of course. I tried not to stare at him. I forced my eyes to remain on the headmaster as he began with his introductions to the class.
It was hard to focus with Ian just inches away from me. I could smell his amazing scent thanks to my heightened smell.
Dimitri rattled on about the dos and don'ts of being a vampire.
"Sunlight will kill you but not here in Bennett. We are fortunate to have witches who have created a force field over the town. The sun does beam through but not at full force so it cant harm us. Garlic isn't toxic like most believe. That was mostly created for books and movies...."
I tried to listen to everything he was saying but it was hard with Ian right there. I glanced his way. He was leaned back comfortably in his chair spinning his pen on his desk.
The other vampires were taking notes as if there would be a test. I pulled out a sheet of paper and did the same. After class was over I grabbed my things prepared to dart off to my next class. It was with Evelyn and she'd probably have my head if I was late.
"Josie, could I have a word before you go?" Dimitri asked sitting back in his desk.
"Sure," I nodded.
"I heard about what happened last night. I just wanted you to know that I can help you train if your willing to learn."
"Train?"
"I have a class just for combat. It helps you use your vampire speed to your advantage."
"I'd definately be interested. Thank you."
He just nodded as he turned his attention to his next batch of students filing in. I fled to Evelyn's classroom. I made it there just in time for the bell to ring. She watched me take a seat with a sour expression on her face.
All eyes were on me. I felt very uneasy. It was almost as if I was on display. Evelyn introduced herself to the class as if no one knew who she was. She carried on informing us of all the things we would learn.
My mind kept drifting back to Silus. Not only had he not told me that he had been the one who took me to the orphanage, he had also left off an even bigger announcement. I had my mom's hair and eyes but everything else about me resembled him. I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed.
I wasn't sure how to go about bringing it up to him. There was probably even more secrets I had yet to discover.
"You're part vampire so I know you cant be deaf." I heard Evelyn snap tapping her foot impatiently.
"I'm sorry what did you say?" I asked causing the rest of the class to laugh.
"I was telling our students about last night and asked if you wanted to demonstrate some of your power." She frowned.
"I don't know how to use my powers," I admitted. She just smirked at me.
"Yet you're supposed to be a weopon." She scoffed. I realized she had just mentioned last night to make a fool out of me. I could feel my face grow hot. I was more than ready to get out of this class.
Finally when it was over I went back to my dorm exhausted. I collapsed on my bed trying to ignore my growling stomach. Chloe came in soon after.
"You look beat." She grinned tossing her stuff onto her nightstand. She curled up on her bed.
"I am."
"I heard about last night."
"Who hasn't?" I sighed wishing I could smother myself with my pillow. I had went from being the freak of the school to being the freak of the school expected to save the world.
"Did Ian really carry you back here?" She asked grinning like an idiot.
"That's what I was told."
"Do you realize what a big deal that is? Silus is the only person he even gives the time a day. That's only because he's raised him since he was three."
That statement awoke a twinge of jealousy in me. If he was my father why did he keep Ian and send me to the orphanage? I wasn't sure how to ask.
"Anyways there is a party again tonight if you want to go." She changed the subject.
"Maybe next time, Chloe. I think I might actually go for a walk and clear my head."
I watched as she got dressed up for the party. Once she left I decided to head out for a walk. I wanted to go back to the lake. The night air felt good on my skin as I exited the building. I could see the lake glittering in the distance. The closer I got to it I noticed I wasn't the only one on a midnight stroll. Ian stood with his back to me gazing out at the lake.
"Hey." I greeted him as I walked up beside him.
"Hey," he actually replied back for once. He lit a cigarette and took a long drag.
"Amelia said you carried me back to my room last night. I just wanted to say thank you."
"Is that really why you came out here," he scoffed taking another puff.
"No I actually needed some air. I needed to clear my head. This place is the perfect place to do that. It's so peaceful."
"I come out here when I'm thinking about my parents. This was my moms favorite place."
It surprised me that he had admitted something like that to me. In that moment I seen a hint of vulnerability in the trouble making vampire.
"I'm sorry about what happened to them," I sighed. It wasn't easy to face him knowing the part my mom played in making him an orphan. He just shrugged and continued to puff on his cigarette.
"They did what they wanted I guess." He answered after a moment of silence. Under the silver moon, he looked even more beautiful. I loved how his black hair fell perfectly and his steel gray eyes sparkled brightly against the darkness.
"I wonder about my mom alot. All I ever hear about is how bad she was. Sometimes I find myself wondering how she would've been with me." I admitted sitting down Indian style at the edge of the lake. To my surprise he sat beside me.
"Who knows? I guess we will never understand why people do what they do." He gazed out across the lake lost in his thoughts. It was easy to see that losing his parents had been what hardened him.
"Do you try to get expelled because this place is a bad reminder?" I asked. I was almost sure that he would end up walking away. He didn't seem to open up to anyone. He took a deep breath. He leaned over and put his cigarette out in the grass.
"Yes. Not everything about this place holds a bad memory. That's why I come here... my mom used to bring me down here to play by the lake. It's one of the few good places left here.."
I swirled my fingertips over the top of the lake. I concentrated very hard wondering if my plan was going to even work.
Show me the memory of Ian and his mother I ordered the water as my hand caressed it gently. It began to swirl at my command. I watched in awe as an image of a woman and young boy materialized over the water. It played like a home video.
Little Ian was running along the edge of the lake, his mother sitting nearby with a book in her hand. I watched as they laughed and played. Soon she pulled out a picnic basket and motioned her son to come over. I watched them as they ate. The image faded away slowly. The water returned to its calm state.
I glanced over to see Ian watching the lake in bewilderment, tears pooling in his enchanting eyes. He blinked them away quickly forbidding them to escape. He stood to his feet quickly and disappeared before I could even speak.
I immediately felt like an idiot. Had I went to far? I should have just took the small opening hed given me into his thoughts and left it at that. I went back to gazing at the water once more. It swirled with so much magic. I could feel it drawing me to it.
I slipped my shoes off and carefully stepped into the lake. The warm water welcomed me with open arms. I dove down deep into the dark unknown. Having dominion over water was amazing. I could see clearly as if I was on land. I was breathing as normal as I would've from above.
Fish danced their way around me fleeing from the trespasser. I watched as they slowed down at a safe distance to peer at me curiously. A vision exploded before my very eyes of me at about two years old. I was in my little bed at the orphanage sound asleep with Mr. Bear under my arm.
The bedroom window opened slowly and a gorgeous woman hopped through silently. I watched as she knelt beside the toddler version of me. She stroked my hair affectionately. I couldnt see her face but I knew it was my mother.
"You're going to be such a powerful witch one day, baby." She murmured. The small version of me stirred but remained comatose.
"You will be powerful enough to stop me. I'll finally be at peace once you find yourself." She added planting a kiss on my small forehead before leaving.
My vision was suddenly refocused back to the underwater life around me. I swam to the top of the water. Had my mother really visited me when I was young? Did she really want me to stop her?
I drank in a gulp of fresh air and made my way back to the land. I was completely drenched now. I silently commanded the water to disappear. It began to roll in small droplets from my clothes and skin. Once it was all on the ground in one large puddle it rolled back into the lake.
I hadn't tested my other element gifts out yet. I decided to save those for another day as I made my way back to my dorm. What little I had done already had drained what energy I had. The hallways were empty as I made my way to my room.
As tired as I was, I knew I had one more stop to make. I went over several speeches as I made my way to Silus's office. Just as I had settled on the perfect one his door swung open. He looked almost as if he had been expecting me.
"Why didn't you tell me you're my father?" I blurted out as all my speeches disappeared from my brain.
