Widisha POV
Three days have passed since the horrible night, Raj is back to his usual self. He just comes in to place the food and leave without any word, he is like a ticking time bomb and, I cannot wait to become his victim again. I don't have any hope that anyone can trace me down so I need to act by myself.
I was never good at it keeping my anxiety at bay, my hands were shaking as I started to put on my warm clothes. There is this tiny voice inside my head that keeps bothering me "what if I fail? What will be the repercussion". I shook the thought away, I need to focus as this may be my only chance to escape.
I know it is pretty early or else I would have heard Raj in the kitchen.
Breath, 1...2...3.....4....5... somewhat I felt clam. I thought about my parents, I cannot put them through any more pain because I am a coward to step up for myself. Vansh......he must be blaming himself, I can't imagine what his family must be going through again. Chris, Sam, Abhi ..........ahh, I shouldn't have fallen into the trap, it was all my fault all mine. Fresh tears roll down my cheeks but I quickly rubbed them with my sleeves now is not the time for self-guilt, I need to act quickly.
I rechecked everything mentally—warm clothes, jacket, and jeans along with running shoes. The last thing I want is to die out in the forest because of hypothermia. I had stuffed four apples in my jacket and a few nuts something is better than nothing. I am not sure whether Raj has noticed that my plates were empty these days, unlike the other days. Lastly, I am standing near the door waiting for it to open with a flower vase in my hand. I just need to hit him enough to knock him off not to kill him. The vase was made out of brass, I guess Raj never thought I could go up to this level.
It was about time, I could hear faint noises in the kitchen, he is up.....it was just a matter of some time before he will open this door. My hands were shaking with fear, and I felt like throwing up. The noises stopped, and I could hear faint footsteps. Ok, it's now and never. I held on my breath and waited patiently as he opened the door, I took a deep breath and hold the vase tightly among my fingers. I was standing right behind the door and kept the shower on just to give me that chance for a few seconds. I saw him walk toward the table to place my food down, this was my time to act. I tiptoed silently before he could turn back.....bam.
I hit him, I did....blood, he was bleeding. Oh God did I kill him....no no please don't please be alive, the vase fell out from my hands as I panicked.
"Widisha.." It was a painful moan....he was still lying on the floor facing down... He is alive, yes..yes he is alive, it's now or never.
I dashed out towards the door, I guessed it right, the kitchen was round the corner. I saw a knife resting on the tabletop, I had not planned for it but I did grab the knife and run towards the main door. To my luck it was open...I jumped up in happiness.
"Widisha.........don't you dare to run away from me, I swear I will hunt you down and this time I won't be nice". I could hear his screams.
Without wasting any time I ran out of the house, he was not lying we are in the middle of the jungle. No doubt the police were not able to trace me down. I have a good couple of minutes before he will be able to get back on his feet, I need to make the most of it. I randomly decided to take the left and I ran. My adrenaline pumped up, the weather was freezing but I was sweating, I ran and ran. It was like a do-or-die situation for me and I cannot let him take me back to that hellhole again.
My legs and muscles were sore and my lungs were burning but I couldn't stop myself. I need to push myself as far as I can before nightfall. I had no expertise on how to survive in a forest but after watching multiple episodes of man vs. wild I had the minimum knowledge that I need to find water and follow the trail to reach the nearest human settlement.
I don't know how long I ran, what was the time? I could barely walk now my energy had drained out but I didn't dare to stop. Like a fool, I did forget about carrying water, I was cursing myself that's when I heard something, it was faint but I had a ray of hope now. It felt like new energy was pumped into me as I began to run toward the sound.
I couldn't believe my eyes after a long time I cried because I was happy, it was a stream flowing down into a waterfall with shaky legs I went toward the edge of the stream climbing up the rocks. Oh God! he is finally having mercy on me... I could see people down near the waterfall, tourists.
"Heyyy.....help me, up hear help me...." Not a single person turned their head up. The sound of the water was too loud for them to listen to my voice. I cannot lose this chance, looking up at the skies I guess it's evening and the darkness will soon cover the area. I don't know if I would be able to survive the night.
I took a few small pebbles in my hand and throw them down, come-on somebody looks up hear, please. A small boy standing near his parents got hit by the pebble. He looked up, I waved my hands like a lunatic, I couldn't be happier when he pulled his mom's hand and pointed his finger towards me.
I screamed "Help me.....help me...police please help me" I saw multiple heads looking up, a few of them were already on the phone I just hope they are calling for help. Please god please help, I silently prayed. I was losing out on sunlight and it felt like forever before I saw a jeep pulling over. Forest guards thank god.
I saw them approaching the people when someone pointed up towards me, I again moved my hands like a lunatic. One of them was carrying a bundle of rope and he started climbing up with the help of the rocks, after almost fifteen minutes he reached the top.
"What the hell are you doing up here miss? It's a restricted area do you know that". He said catching on his breath.
"Please take me down, I need to get in touch with DGP Verma or Inspector Kritika Singh please I don't have much time." His eyes grew big as I mentioned the name of the police, but thankfully he didn't bother asking me any further questions.
"Have you done rock climbing before?" He asked while tying the rope around a tree.
"No, I haven't". I replied.
"So it's going to be tough but if you follow exactly what I say and remain calm we will reach the bottom in no time. Deal?" I just nodded, what other option do I have.
He tied the other end of the rope around my waist, he started climbing down the rock first. "One step at a time ok?".
The rocks were slippery, because of the waterfall gushing nearby. My steps slipped quite a few times but the guard was an expert, he caught hold of me every time. Finally, after what felt like an eternity my right foot landed on the ground followed by my left foot. I had no time to feel proud about myself I need to get out of here as fast as I could. I waited patiently for the guard to untie the rope, a stranger gave me a bottle of water to drink.
I mumble a small thank you to both of them and ran towards the jeep after I had finish drinking the water like there was no tomorrow.
"Do you have a phone I need to call DGP Verma or Inspector Kritika right now please just tell them my name it's Widisha" The guard gave me a look, before dialing through his satellite phone?
"I am Mahesh calling from the forest department, we have a girl here named Widisha she wants to talk with the DGP or inspector Kritika". I waited patiently, my heart was beating faster. Someone was speaking from the other end, the guard kept on giving me a sympathetic look now and then while listening.
"They want to speak with you". He handed me the phone.
"He...llo... it's me Widisha" my heart was panting, it was too good to be true... I dreaded that I will wake up from this dream.
"Wisiha, Kritika here are you alright? Widisha say something". Oh god, I couldn't stop myself and I cried, it was finally happening.
"Please....please take me out from here...please I want to go home...please Kritika". I said in between my sobs.
"Listen, the guards will take to the nearest check post, we are on our way we will pick you up from there please just hold on for some time. You are coming home." She said in one breath.
"Thank you."I mumbled and gave the phone back to the guard. I know she was giving him instruction, but he kept his conversation to a yes or no.
Finally, the jeep started, I sat in the back along with the guard who had rescued me. I was relieved that no one asked me any questions. The drive was in silence and bumpy, it was already dark by the time we left the waterfall. I just hope they don't take a wrong turn because it was pitch dark, nothing was visible beyond the headlights of the jeep.
"We are almost there Ms." I heard one of the guards say and after a few minutes, the jeep came to a stop.
My heart was beating heavily, is this happening I will be finally meeting my family. Am I free?
I climbed down the jeep and slowly walked towards the front, I saw them, my family and Abhi
My mom was sobbing holding my dad, Kritika was there, and Abhi was running towards me, everything was so overwhelming. I was finally free, I felt my head going heavy I couldn't hold my weight any longer but before I could hit the floor I felt strong arms wrapped around me.
"I got you Widisha, I got you. You are safe now I promise". It was Abhi's voice I heard before the darkness engulfed me.
