A lesson

"It's sad when someone you know becomes someone you knew" - Henry Rollins

As we drove through town he saw people chatting near stores, teens walking around and shopping. Men chatting about the upcoming hunting season or whatever sports game is coming next.

The town was small as we drove through, a town where everyone knew everyone. A town where there is a cool place to hang out.

He noticed some people glance our way seeing the commotion of a car driving through town some waving, recognizing it as Grandma finchs car.

They had finally reached the familiar house of Grandma Finch, making him feel excited that he wouldn't have to sit any longer, only to finally move around and stretch his legs.

Grandma finch parked her car in the small drive way facing her small backyard in the neighborhood.

The house was a beautiful house with two stories tall, it had red bricks lining the house and a front door that was wooden and had stained glass as the window. Making it look old and rustic, the house roof was slanted in different ways with a chimney on top, and a few stairs leading to the door, with a pathway following it to the driveway. Carter sighed as he got out of the car, breathing in the smells and enjoying the nice weather that is the last day of summer.

"Carter why don't you go ahead and grab my keys to open the door so I can get your bags in?" Grandma finch said making him glance over his shoulder as his grandmother struggled to get his bags.

"Gran let me get my bags. You get the door." He said as he walked over to his grandmother. When he tried to take his bags from her she moved her hands away and continued her merry way to the door. Ignoring the fact that he had tried to help her. He sighed as he walked back around the car to the passenger side where her house keys were left in the glovebox.

Once he had the keys he walked to where his grandmother was waiting with his bags, hands on her hips and her foot was tapping.

"Carter, you need to learn to pick up the pace. I may be old, but I still have youth." Grandmother said shaking her head at him.

"But I-" Carter stopped himself from losing any breath. It wasn't worth arguing with his grandmother, knowing that she would win with valid points.

He begrudgingly gave her the keys as he met her at the door.

"That's what I thought Grandson." Grandmother said as she pinched my cheeks making him move away from embarrassment. She then grabbed the keys from him and finally opened the door.

Revealing the inside of the house, the wooden staircase welcoming you to the upstairs. A small hallway to several rooms, which included a half bathroom, the kitchen, the dining room, and an open living room. The hallway floor was Dark oak wood leading into old blue green carpet for the living room.

Snapping him out of his daze as he took in the sight grandma has hobbled her way to the kitchen, making clinking and clanging sounds as she moves dishes around. It's as if it was normal for her that he just wasn't there. Making her go into her own world.

Carter rounded the corner where the swinging doors lead to the kitchen, opening up a whole new room to him. There was an island in the middle with some wooden bar stools for people to sit on and eat their morning breakfast. Countertops with cabinets hanging above them leading around the kitchen only to stop at the overhead fan that was above the stove. A small window facing the backyard where the kitchen sink was.

The refrigerator was on his left stuck in the corner, the one that grandma was digging into. She pulled out some bread, jelly  and peanut butter from the pantry.

"You like PB and J right?" Grandma asked as she set them aligned to each other on the counter facing me with a wicked glint in her eyes. Carter stared at his grandmother with wide eyes confused, on why she was asking him this.

"I've never had any." He said shrugging his shoulders.

"You can't be serious Carter? No grandson of mine will be a grandson of mine if they haven't had PB and J." Grandma said.

"That doesn't make any sense, why does everyone have to have Pb and j in their life? Why is it an iconic food item?" He asked

"Why don't you find out yourself?" Finch said as she gestured to the ingredients set out in front of her.

Carter let his eyes wander over the three items set in front of him. Skeptical, he grabbed the bread first, untwisted the tie that tied it together. Set out two pieces of bread, unscrewing the strawberry jar that she had laid out for him. Spreading it smoothly over the bread. Before I could continue any further Grandma stopped me.

"Why did you put jelly on first?" She asked.

"Because you can put peanut butter on the other half?" He questioned raising a brow at her.

She just nodded and let him be, which made him hesitate before moving on to the peanut butter. He put down the knife which was hovering over the peanut butter jar and turned to his grandmother who was about to walk out of the kitchen.

"Why'd you ask that question?" He asked.

"Finish making the sandwich and I'll tell you." She said nodding to the empty piece of bread.

He sighed and pushed aside the one with jelly and the one without anything, and got two new pieces of bread. This time, he went for the peanut butter jar. And smeared it all over the bread, then he took the knife wiped it on the jars edges, and took it and stuck it into the jelly, smearing that onto the same side of the peanut butter.

He then grabbed the one that was empty and placed it on top of the one with jelly and peanut butter. He stared at it for a second, until his grandmother broke his thoughts.

"The reason, I have you making this sandwich, is because not only I want you to try it. But I want you to realize that, when you mess up, or give up, then you can always start again and not be ashamed about it. There is a saying that everyone says, 'try, try, again.' It means to never give up, to never stop believing in yourself." She paused and took a breath

"And you've just done that to yourself ever since we lost family. Ever since your family has been punched in the chest, creating a void in the family. Your father, trying to work hard everyday, to make a living. Not coming home until early in the morning. Not taking care of the only family he thinks he has. What you need to do with that sandwich, is pick it up, and try it. Because just as you pick that sandwich up, you have to learn to pick up yourself while you're living with me." She said giving him a long look that made him feel ashamed of what he has done.

Ashamed of who he is now as a person, giving up dreams because depression took over, giving up everything he worked hard for, because of depression. He had thought, that this whole sandwich making was a big joke. Not a lesson.

"What about the sandwich I messed up on? Do we dispose of that one?" Carter asked.

She shook her head and chuckled "No Carter, we can still reuse it, we can still continue with it. You learn from your mistakes, and you continue to learn from it and use that as a way to become successful."

He stared at the sandwich for a while before he picked up the courage and took a bite. The creamy peanut butter sticking to the roof of his mouth, making him want to wash it down with some type of beverage. As if Finch read his mind, she had already made her way to the fridge, and grabbed a carton of milk, then she made her way to the cabinets and grabbed a glass. She then set them in front of me, as if silently telling me, take the first step.

Which He did. He took the leap of faith, the hope that he had left of himself. The hope that he will eventually grow into himself. The hope that he will conquer the darkness growing inside him before it's too late.

But little did his grandmother know, it was already too late to fix a broken man.
