When the evil is amongst us
Unlike Ajeenkya, the new baby was not so mischievous. However she and Ajeenkya had an extraordinary bond. The baby had just like Ajeenkya grown faster than other kids, and had learned to crawl at nearly 6 months. She loved imitating her sister, even though they were two and a half years apart, yet they acted like twins. Ajeenkya was very possessive of her baby sister. She now had Aboli as her pet, inspite of protest from both her grandmothers.
However Vayuvijay and Manyata had allowed Ajeenkya to keep the wolf. The pup had now become a full grown wolf who gave Ajeenkya rides on her back.
"Mother did I have a naming ceremony?" asked Ajeenkya.
"Yes my love, you did, and you looked like an angel." Said Manyata.
"Mother why do they have a naming ceremony." Asked the little girl. "Just like I named Aboli, why cant we name babies ourselves. " The wolf pricked up its ears hearing its name.
"Cause it is believed that the name chosen in the naming ceremony describes the person's true character and attributes." Replied Manyata.
"What does my name mean mother?"
"It means the invincible. Someone who cannot be defeated."
"Mother, should we have a naming ceremony for Aboli as well?"
Manyata smiled at the child's innocence. "Sge already has a name."
"Mother, Uncle Vrijeswar said we shall be going on a voyage with father. Why won't you come with us?"
"Well Ajeenkya, imagine what would you do if neither I or your father were their to protect you or your sister?"
"I will be scared. Very scared. The bad men will come."
"Exactly, just like you and Ajeenkya the people of the Rajdhani take us as their father and mother. We have to protect them. So if both of us leave, whom will they go to, if the maid scolds them, or if they loose their dolls or if their stomach hurts?"
"Hmmm," Ajeenkya replied thoughtfully. "Mother why the men and women holding spears have such different clothes on their head? "
Ajeenkya was known for being inquisitive. She had many questions, often it grew her answerer tired.
"They are called Ferans. Strips of rectangular clothes tied around their foreheads which helps in identifying category of the Khsatriyas. The ones who have red Ferans tied around their foreheads are part of the Rajdhani guards. The Rajdhani guards are the law keepers who look after the security of the people in the Rajdhani. The ones with Golden Feran tied around their forehead are part of the Royal Army. The royal army looks after the welfare and security of all the people of Ethar. Every State has their own law-keepers. They are called the state guards. Each state guard has a different coloured ferans. The state guards of Kaivalya wear Yellow Ferans. Similarly Nazaan has blue, Kanaan has green, Zaidan has Purple and Zaidee has Orange."
"Mother don't the Khsatriyas get time to sleep, they are always standing?"
"Well dear, they have different shifts, once their shifts end they can sleep."
"Mother why do they carry spears? Grandmother says that Spears and Swords are dangerous."
"Cause the bad men are scared of the swords. They can chase the bad men with it."
Their conversation was cut shot by Aboli's light howl.
"Not again!" An exasperated Manyata said, as she rushed after the baby who was crawling to the open door of the room. She got up from the bed and picked up her younger daughter.
"You both are just the same." Complained Manyata "Always keeping everyone on their toes."
Ajeenkya laughed at her mother's comment.
A commotion rose from outside. As the voices drew closer, she heard it was Jaya, her sister-in-law and her husband.
"I will not have this anymore." She heard her sister in law. "I have tolerated all kinds of allegations made against my husband, not anymore. I am your sister. You cannot do this to me. I know Bhaswath."
"The evidences are compelling," Vayuvijay said earnestly "he was unable to justify himself."
"All the witnesses have accepted that Bhaswath was seen with two hooded men a day prior to the attack on my wife and daughter." Said Vayuvijay "Nobody wears Black pearl neck strings in the Rajdhani other than him. A black pearl string was found in the hut inside the forest along with scrolls carrying instructions of how to kill Ajeenkya and Manyata."
"That is enough to put a person in the dungeons for his life?" Jaya asked helplessly.
"He has not been able to tell where he had lost his pearl necklace. Neither had he informed the Rajdhani guards that it has been missing." Vayu replied. "Vrijeswar also found a piece of Ajeenkya's clothes, which got torn during her attack, from your quarters, and your husband's footwear had reminiscent of soil which can only be found in the depth of the forest." Vayuvijay said quietly.
Ajeenkya was listening to the altercation between her father and her aunt. Jaya started to cry. She turned towards Ajeenkya,
"He never tried to kill you." Jaya told her. Her voice chocking. "Maybe one day you shall be able to convince him." Jaya broke down as she turned around and ran out of the room.
"Father, I don't think Uncle Bhaswath tried to kill me." She said firmly. "He always brings me nice toys and candies."
"Well, today you learn a lesson then. Don't let yourself be lured by candies and toys. It may be a trap to harm you." Vayuvijay replied.
"What if he was set up?" Asked Manyata.
"The council of justice had unanimously found him guilty." Replied Vayuvijay as he walked towards the bed where his family sat.
He took his younger daughter from Manyata's lap and started rocking her.
"The Emperor has a power of pardon." Said Manyata quietly.
"Well," Vayuvijay looked up from his daughter and directly at Manyata menacingly, "I did pardon his death sentence. Not that I don't regret.. pardoning it."
They heard footsteps. A royal attendant along with a Rajdhani guard came and addressed them.
"You highness Lady Jaya had left the Castle along with her two daughters and handmaiden."
The attendant informed.
Revathi, Jaya and Saudamini had started living with their families at the castle since Ajeenkya's naming ceremony upon Vayuvijay's insistence.
"Tell Veerbhadra, to assign guards for their protection." Said Vayu. "However make sure they don't find out."
