Chapter 20: Callioneil - Hiding Away
I frown at Kai in confusion. "What do you mean by that?"
His smile is indulgent as he says it again. "That your gift will be light?" I nod nervously. "It means thst you'll be able to control light itself and all its sources, so you'll have mastery over fire as well."
I look at him curiously. How does he know all of this? How exactly did he save me? My grandmother steps in front of me again and I frown, peering over her shoulder at him. She snaps at him, and I inwardly curse. Babushka! He truly means no harm. Let him be.
"Why should I trust anything you say?"
"Because Calli trusts me and because you don't have much time."
She narrows her eyes at him. "Why not?"
He sighs. "You don't have much time because while you did kill him," he looks down at the dead man, a scowl flitting across his face. "his leaders looked at his location, they tracked him. They've sent another group here. I can hear them closing in."
My grandmother scowls at him. "We'll have words later, you and I."
He bows. "Agreed."
My grandmother turns to me and tugs in my arm, pulling me back to the safe room. I glance back towards the chest, still floating in the air. I can't leave it! Kai notices where my attention has strayed and holds a finger to his lips. The chest disappears and my eyes widen. Where did it go? A whisper brushes past me as my grandmother pulls me down the hall, and my ears strain to hear it.
"It's gone back to your main chest, it's safe."
I look back at Kai. Was that him? He nods to me, his eyes twinkling in amusement. I look forward again just in time for my grandmother to herd me into the safe room. She pushes me inside, and Sekret squeezes past her to join me.
"Stay here Calli, and don't leave. No matter what." She presses her key into my hand.
I frown at her in confusion, my green eyes wide. "How will I know it's safe?"
She smiles at me and squeezes my shoulder once. "You'll know it's safe when you hear me say Nadezhda eto son nayavu."
My brow furrows as I echo the phrase back to her in English. "Hope is a waking dream? Why, Babushka?"
Her smile is warm and calm, despite the turmoil in her eyes. "Because that was the phrase your father and I used when you were just a tiny thing in your mother's womb. Hope for what you would be like, and curiosity."
She shuts the door before I can respond to that, and I hear the door click as it locks. Without her key, she cant get back in. I'm the only one who can, and maybe Kai because he can teleport. Why did she give me her key? The answer hits me a moment later. It's so that if they capture her or kill her, they can't get to me. I sigh and sink to my knees. Sekret noses my briefly and licks my knee before she plops down beside me to wait.
