Ryugen Kura was a promising student in Kamikoshi City five years before the events of Dandadan. He was a bright, energetic young man who deeply bonded with Minori Ayase, Momo Ayase's adopted older sister. Minori was shy and prone to being bullied, but Ryugen, her unwavering protector, was always there to shield her from harm. He became her hero, earning him the affectionate nickname "the princess's knight."

One fateful day, while playing football, Ryugen chased a ball that had been kicked into the nearby mountain. There, he was ambushed by Minori's tormentors, who had grown tired of his interference. The bullies stabbed him, leaving him to die alone, powerless to protect Minori. In his final moments, he heard their cruel plan to harm her, and an all-consuming rage erupted from his spirit. Fueled by this fury and a fierce protective instinct, Ryugen's soul transformed into the powerful, vengeful Doragon King.

Meanwhile, Minori was tricked by the bullies, who pretended Ryugen was occupied and lured her into a dark alley. Before their sinister intent could be fulfilled, the leader was suddenly cut in half by a swift, unseen force. Emerging from the shadows, the Doragon King revealed himself, his eyes burning intensely. He killed the remaining bullies, murmuring, "Protect the princess" as he did.

Minori, terrified by the violent scene, realized that the being before her was indeed Ryugen, though changed beyond recognition. She desperately attempted to reach the boy she knew and kissed him. The touch rekindled a fragment of Ryugen's old self, calming the beast within.

In the present, five years after that harrowing day, Ryugen and Minori live together as spirit beings at Seiko Shrine alongside Momo.
