(Don't forget to hear the Song 👆😙🎶)
"Ah! Your dress!" That person finally noticed me and my messed up attire. "Ah! Your hair." He started to look round panickedly. "Tissue, tissue. I need some tissue papers."
"It's okay! It's okay!" I tried to calm him. "Really, it's okay." I laughed like a stupid. "It's not too at all."
"I am so sorry," That person looked at me with a pair of innocent eyes which looked like a five year old kid who got lost from his parents. "I actually just finished a twelve hours long meningioma surgery. Total removal. It was located so dangerously on the sphenoid bone, near the optic nerve. One single mistake would have affected the patient's eyesight as well as his hand movement. Well it is not too bad for a normal person but if the person is a doctor...."
I had no idea what he was talking about but he looked very happy to talk about that.
"Ah, sorry," He paused when he realized that I was staring at him with zero understanding. "I should do something about your dress instead of giving you details about my surgery."
"Oh believe me." I pinched my shirt and slowly pulled it off and made a small distance from the direct contact with my skin. "I am really enjoying it. Keep going."
"Sure, but let you have some tissue first at least." He smiled with a shy expression.
"That will be great."
"So, are you here to see someone?" That doctor asked me as we started to walk to a long corridor. "Patient or doctor?"
"No, actually it is my first day of work here." I looked around. "Can you please direct me the way to the emergency award register room."
"Oh yes," He pointed out his index finger in a particular direction. "Just walk straight and take the second right turn. The door with the blue border."
"Oh thank you so much." I smiled at him gratefully. "You are such a great help."
"But what about your dress?" He looked at me concerned.
"Oh, it's fine." I waved my hand. "I am sure they will provide me with some uniforms."
"Please let me pay for the dye cleaning cost." His eyes glinted with genuine guilt. "Really. I insist."
"Okay, fine." I finally gave up. "Thank you, umm....,"
"Oh sorry! How silly of me!" He dropped that styrofoam cup in the bin, wiped off his hand on his white robe and reached out to me. "I am steve. And you?"
"Esmé." I took his hand.
"It's really nice to meet you Esmé."
"The pleasures are all mine."
We stopped at the first right turn.
"Please come and find me if you need any help of mine." He pointed at a door. "That's my office."
"Thanks I will." I smiled and started to walk away. "Bye Steve. See you."
"See you."
A big contented smile added some extra brightness as I walked to the emergency office room. First day of my work and I already encountered a damn handsomely cute doctor. Oh, I felt like dancing.
It was very easy to find the office as well as the process. The person in charge was a middle aged lady with glasses. After finishing up all the paperwork she gave me a brand new ID and a yellow badge with my name written on it.
"What size do you want for your uniform?" She asked me as she got up from her chair to take out the uniform for me. "I think the medium will do for you." She took a look at me from head to toe.
"Yes, please." I smiled cherrily. "A medium size will do."
"Size M, size M, size..." She mumbled herself as she was checking the size on those piled up uniforms. "Aha, there you go." She pulled out a pair of bottle green coloured uniforms and tossed them on the table lightly. "One size M female emergency squad uniform."
"Thank you!" I thanked her and rubbed my fingers gently on those Sacramento uniforms, like those are some precious things.
"Right," she sat back on her seat, "Your partner's name is Jake Miller, ID no. OHXFG03. Change yourself into those uniforms and go down stairs. It is vehicle no. 3 you will be riding on from now on."
"Thank you." I thanked her and took my leave.
I changed my clothes into those uniforms and went downstairs at the ambulance station car park. to find my designated vehicle.
"Excuse me." I asked the person who was sitting on the driver's seat with the door open while vaping an e-cigarette. "Mr. Miller."
"Yes." that person turned to me leisurely and checked me from head to toe. "And you are?" He cocked his brows at me.
I was expecting a middle aged reserved person. But that person didn't look much older. Might be six or seven years older than me. And somehow looked a little rough. But I reckoned that was okay. After all that job was not like some food delivery job. I reckoned he had to witness so many disturbing scenes which people wouldn't like to even think about. It was hard to keep your mind sane.
"Umm, I am Esméralda Shenton." I smiled at him amiably. "I was told to assist you in the vehicle."
It took a few moments to kick in that information in his mind. His eyes brightened up with excitement.
"Oh right, my new partner." His pursed lips instantly changed into the widest smile I ever saw. "Welcome, welcome." He put off his vape stick and reached out his hand. "Nice to meet you, Esméralda."
"The pleasures are all mine, Mr. Miller." I accepted his hand quickly and gave him my best smile. "And please just Esmé is fine."
"Same here, Just call me Jake." He winked at me. "We are going to stick together for so many bloody hours together. There's no need to be so formal around me. Eh?"
"Yes, right." I tucked a few strands of free air behind my ears.
"Come sit inside." He opened the shotgun seat door for me and patted the seat. "So, Esmé where are you from?"
"I am from Carbost." I immediately reckoned he had no idea about that place. "It's a very small town in Scotland."
"Aha, you are from Scotland." He waved his index finger at me. "I love single malt." I laughed.
"So, where did you work before?" He asked as he picked up his phone and pointed at my Id card. "Would you mind if I take a picture of it? Just in case of emergencies."
"No, of course not. Sure." I handed him over my ID card. "Actually this is my first time in this job line."
"Ah, don't worry." He grinned. "I assure you, I will make you feel way better in your first."
"Thanks." I smiled back. Suddenly the walkie talkie which was attached at the side of the car started to make a beep beep sound. Jake quickly took off that thing before he could turn his head in that direction.
"Well Esmé, buckle up your seat," He said to me as he answered that wireless talking device. "We just got our first case. A female. jumped off from her balcony." He handed me an orange neon jacket. "Put that on."
"What? Already?" I quickly put that jacket on and buckled up my seat. "Where?"
"Carson road, Norwood." Jake fired up the engine.
In the end it was the fire service team who rescued that girl, because she fell on an old maple tree and was hanging on those branches like some kite which got cut off from it's string, right under her balcony.
"She is quite lucky. Eh?" Jake said while looking up at those people, on the ladder who were trying to untangle that poor girl from those branches. "Not everyone finds a tree right on the spot where you are jumping."
"Well..." I laughed awkwardly because I didn't know what else to say. I swiped my eyes on those few people who were watching that event. My eyes suddenly stuck on certain someone.
Boiii! Did he just walk out from the glossy pages of RUNAWAY magazine.
He was so damn handsome that he made me remember those heavenly sparkly models. Any person whoever was going to get him, was hell of lucky.
"Medic!" They called us out loudly and I startled as I stopped drooling over that man. We quickly lifted up the stretcher and ran towards them. My breath hitched when I saw the condition of that girl. Her right arm was dangling from the stretcher like some pendulum. She got some purple bruises on her face and her one eye was swollen badly. But the most disturbing thing was her leg. Because a branch was pierced through her thigh muscle like a meat piece stuck on a stewer.
"Quickly put her mask on." Jake instructed me as he quickly took out an oxygen cylinder and opened the knob. I hastily put the mask on her face and put her hanging arm up on the stretcher. Jake threw me a brace. I quickly and carefully secure her neck with that thing.
"Let the branch stay that way for now." Jake squinted his eyes and examined her leg. "We should leave it for the doctors to handle." I nodded.
"Liza!" Suddenly someone pushed me a little and clasped that girl's hand tightly. I turned my head and my eyes widened. It was that greek god. Up close he looked much more handsome. By his reaction I reckoned he was already taken by her. Tsk, what a shame!
"Is she alright?" That person turned his attention to me. "Please, tell me she is alright." He looked like some madman. Silly girl! Why did you jump off when you got a perfect man for yourself.
"Well, she is alive." Jake held up her hand casually and felt the pulse. "We will find which parts are okay on her inner side when we will get to the hospital."
"What an ass!" I heard a girl behind that man, who was crying her eyes out hissed in a lower voice. I looked at the girl only to find out she was opening her eyes.
"Jake, she opened her eyes!"I called out Jake loudly out of excitement. "That's right dear. Open your eyes slowly. There's no rush. Take your time." I leaned a little to her face with a n overwhelmed happiness. I lit a tiny torch and swiped it on her eyes.
"Okay!" Jake put his hands on his waist and examined her reflex. "Do you think she can make it to the hospital or I should get out the body bag?"
I looked at him in disbelief. I knew he was too used to that kind of situation, but still he should think twice before he said something like that so seriously.
"What the fuck do you mean?!" I jumped on my feet when that man shouted just before my ears. He looked like he was fuming with anger. "If you don't like your job then scram! Nobody needs you here!"
"Hey man, calm down!" Jake tilted his head a little. Looking pissed off. "I am just doing my job." They looked like they were about to start a fight.
"Ron, Please calm down." The other girl quickly held that hottie's hand to back him down.."Let them do their job."
"Fuck!" That hottie groaned with frustration. Okay so his name was Ron. Hot, like him. I decided to shift everyone's attention, including mine to that poor girl again, who actually needed them at that moment.
"Jake, please focus here." I leaned over again and carefully started to examine her face . "Can you hear me?" She nodded her head with so much difficulty with braces around her neck. She blinked her eyes in a slow motion. "Can you tell us your name?"
"L...iza." She forced out her name with a weak voice.
"So, how is it?" I looked at Jake. Jake slowly walked closer to the stretcher while scratching his unsaved rough chin.
"Four noticeable fractures, one big bruise over her right eye, doesn't look that bad though. One deep and nasty piercing wound on her right thigh by a broken twig. We are keeping it like that to prevent the bleeding. Her vitals are stable and positive. She is lucky enough to have a tree right on her falling spot. Good for her."
"Can you please stop your chit chat and start moving her to the hospital?!" Ron asked impatiently.
"Okay, okay." Jake threw his hands in the air and turned to me. "Let's move her."
Ron hastily came to the side of Liza and held her hand affectionately. "Don't worry. Everything will be alright." His face looked flushed and scared. Oh god, I was so envious of that girl named Liza at that moment.
"What....happened? Where am I?" Liza asked as she was trying to sweep her one full open and one half open eye at her surroundings.
"Oh, you don't remember?" Jake asked her as he and I hefted up the stretcher along with her lying. "You tried to jump off from the balcony but luckily landed on a tree just under your building."
Suddenly Liza started to shake vigorously. I shouted before my brain could grasp the situation.
"She is going into shock!"
Liza's eyes rolled back in her head as she went unconscious again.
When I returned home after my shift I dragged myself to the bed and dropped dead instantly, because I was so fucking tired. I closed my eyes and mumbled myself before I drifted to the dream world.
"What an exciting first day."
