Chapter 6: The Curse and Prayer of Possibility

A.S-[Ad Stella] Year 116

After making preparations for their departure from Mercury to escape the sights of Elnora, with the help of Casval who was able to make relations with an ex-military group that was hiding on Mercury, Emily was making the final preparations for her and her family to leave the planet as she was supervising the loading of the mobile suits she created. She watched from an upper scaffolding as another one of her creations, the Kyshatriya, was moving the mobile suit containers out of the docking bays.

"Thank you, Marida. I can't express how grateful I am to you and Zinnerman." Emily spoke into an earpiece as the woman piloting Kyshatriya replied.

"No need for thanks. I'm just following my master's orders." Marida replied as she pulled out the container that read 'RX-0: Unit 02' on the container.

"He really doesn't like it when you call him that, don't you know?" Emily said with a hint of humor as she was going over some schematics of the Unicorn.

"You want this one loaded in the farther back storage hold of the Garenceries?" Marida asked Emily.

"Yes, that's right." Emily said as the door behind her opened and she turned around to see her son, Darren, walking towards her as his hair was damp from a fresh shower. "Darren? What are you doing here?" She asked.

"I just wanted to see how things were going." Darren said as he and leaned against the rail of the scaffolding and stared at the Unicorn as it was no longer in its container and would be stored as is in one of the mobile suit holds on the ship. "I'm sorry, Mom. After a whole year...The Unicorn just wouldn't accept me as its pilot..." He said with a hint of guilt as Emily also grew a sad look.

"No...It's my fault we have to do this..." Emily said as she lowered the schematics and looked longingly at the Unicorn Gundam. "If I had stopped Elnora sooner, if I had done more for everyone...if I didn't create these machines in the first place..." She balled her fist before opening it back up and gently placed her hand on Darren's cheek. "If none of this had happened...I wouldn't have had to turn you into a Cyber-Newtype." She said with guilt as Darren looked to her.

"I would make the same choice to become enhanced like this again if it meant we could protect people. You and Dad don't have to do this alone, I'll also be there by your sides when the time comes to stop her." Darren said as Emily was surprised for a moment, before she smiled sadly and kissed her son on the head.

"Thank you, Darren..." Emily said as the two of them turned back to the Unicorn. "Still, I can't wrap my head around it. Why won't the Unicorn accept you and your father as its pilots? I created them...yet I don't know what it is they want..." She said as they stared ominously at the machine, but their trance was broken when the door behind them opened once more.

"Emily, Darren." The pair turned around to see Casval walk up to them. "I can't find Y/N. Have you seen him?" He asked.

"Huh? You can't find him?" Emily said in confusion.

"I saw in the hallway after my last try at powering on the Unicorn. I thought he was gonna just go to find something to eat." Darren explained.

"I already checked there, nothing." Casval said as Emily double tapped her ear piece.

"Marida, stop what you're doing first." Emily said as Kyshatriya stopped one step from entering the Garenceries.

"What happened?" Marida asked in confusion.

"Y/N's gone missing. We need some help covering ground to find him." Emily said as Marida began unstrapping herself from her cockpit seat.

"Goodness, that boy..." Marida muttered as she opened her hatch and put her mobile suit into a temporary stasis as used a rappelling hook to descend to the ground.

"I'll check the barracks." Darren said as he walked pass his parents.

"Let's check all the living quarters again." Casval said as he and Emily headed in the opposite direction of Darren as the hunting party for you began.

Whilst everyone was running around the hidden facility trying to find where you had vanished to, it would appear you weren't too far from where they just were as appeared at the top of the scaffolding in front of the cockpit of the Unicorn. Your mother and father told you that you should stay away from from anything in the Mobile Suit wing, but having to be forced to live there for a year and cut ties with Suletta and anyone else you knew, life had become dull and boring and a mental struggle for you. You try to find any source of entertainment, but nothing really satisfied you, so feeling a bit adventurous, you decided to sneak into the Mobile Suit Wing wanted to see what Mobile Suits were like. You ran to the first giant robot you saw and it just happened to be the Unicorn as you walked in front of the cockpit hatch and looked up in awe.

"Wooooow~" You breathed out as you were astonished by the awesome looking robot. "So this is the thing big brother is going to fly? Cool!" You said as you looked to what you didn't know was the hatch and tilted your head. "How do you get in though?" You wondered.

You walked back and forth on the scaffolding to see if there was any sort of door that you could go into, but there was no such entrance as you raised your brow in confusion. Contemplating on what to do, you leaned against the hatch with both hands on it to try and think hard about what to do, but once your hand touched the hatch, the scanners suddenly input your imprint and opened up. You yelled in shock as you backed away into the railing, but froze when you saw the hatch fully open and reveal the powered off cockpit. You stared in wonder as you slowly stepped closer and closer to the cockpit before you put one foot inside and poked your head in. Stepping inside the cockpit, you were in wonder of what everything was as the strange looking seat attracted your attention. You thought about sitting in it, but the center console was blocking your way from getting into the seat. You tried to pull it down in the direction the stand was in, but it didn't budge. But when you placed your hand on the touch screen of the console, the scanners integrated your biometric signature to the Unicorn before you yelped when the console suddenly lowered out of the way for you.

"Cool! Thank you!" You exclaimed to the machine as you hopped into the seat. "Wow..." You said with a smile as the center console raised itself back up and locked you into the seat, but that wasn't a worry for you as you took hold of the Unicorn's control sticks.

Once your hands grabbed onto the control handles, the entire cockpit made a gentle electric humming noise as you froze in surprise when blue lights with strange texts and numbers appeared all over the walls of the cockpit. The hatch slowly closed as from the lower level, Marida came running inside the hangar from the sound of engines being started.

"What's going on?" Marida said in confusion as she looked around to see what was happening, but when she looked up at the Unicorn, her eyes widened as the eye components of the Mobile Suit suddenly lit green and its engines roared to life. "Oh no!" She gasped as she hurried over to a ladder and began to climb up towards the hatch. "Emily! Come in!" Marida said while tapping her earpiece.

While chaos was ensuing in the hangar, your mother and father were searching through all the rooms with the help of Zinnerman's men, Flaste and Gilboa, but to no avail as all the living quarters and common rooms were empty. Casval and Emily walked out of the rooms they were searching, and looked at each other in confusion as to where you could be. Before she could ask her husband anything, Emily's earpiece suddenly activated.

"Emily! Come in, now!" Emily was surprised when Marida's voice suddenly called in.

"What's wrong, Marida?" Emily asked as she put her hand to her ear piece.

"Someone's activated the Unicorn!" Marida said as Emily gave Casval a shocked look before she took off running back towards the hangar, with Casval and the others following.

Marida climbed the scaffolding as fast as she could before making it to the level where the hatch of the Unicorn was located. She was about to input an emergency code on a touch pad on the side of the hatch, but froze when she heard the thrusters begin to come online. Knowing what that sound meant, she hurriedly input the emergency access code as the hatch opened and the thrusters fired. Diving in without a second thought, Marida crashed into the cockpit and groaned from hitting the floor as the hatch closed and the dock the Unicorn was being held in began shaking apart. Emily and the others rushed into the hangar to see what was going on, but were forced to cover themselves when a strong gusts of wind blew from the thrusters and moments later, the Unicorn broke free from its dock and launched through the hidden hangar door ceiling, and flying into the sky above.

"Mom!" Emily heard and turned to see Darren arrive. "What's going on?! Where's the Unicorn?" He asked as Emily tapped her earpiece.

"Marida! Where are you?!" Emily asked as Marida groaned from hitting her head on the floor and slowly opened her eyes.

"Damn it..." Marida groaned as she struggled to get up.

"AHHHHHHHH!!! STOP!! I SAID STOP!!!!" Marida heard a scared voice before a violent movement of the cockpit caused her to go flying to her feet.

With the violent movements that were happening, Marida was thrown towards the top of the seat as she caught herself on its frame and held on. Shaking her head to regain her bearings, Marida looked to see who was in the seat, only to be shocked when she saw it was you as you were frantically moving the controls around while crying.

"STOP!! I DON'T WANNA DO THIS ANYMORE!! STOP!!!!" You screamed out loud.

"Y-Y/N! Calm down! To stop, you have to--Agh!" Marida yelled when the Unicorn suddenly came to a stop and she was launched from the seat and slammed against the hatch door.

"Big sis!" You cried out in worry as the Unicorn remained hovering in place.

"Y/N...Are you okay?" Marida asked while putting her hand to her head and pulling it away to see she was bleeding a little.

"Big sis! I'm sorry! I just wanted to see what these things were like, and it suddenly started flying!" You cried as Marida found herself to her feet.

"D-Don't worry, I'll get you back down." Marida said as she propped herself on the center console. "First, put down the center console so I can get in the seat." She said as you sniffled and wiped some tears from your face.

"H-How? What if I-I break it...again...?" You asked in confusion as tears streamed down your face, but you were surprised when Marida suddenly placed both her hands on your cheeks and began wiping them away.

"You're not going to break anything. We're gonna work together and get back to your mom, okay?" Marida said with a gentle tone as you looked at her in awe before sniffling and wiping your nose.

"Mhmm!" You nodded your head in belief of her words as she gave you a small smile.

"Press that button on the left side of your seat. The green one." Marida said as you looked at your left side to the console and saw a green button.

"O-Okay." You said as you pressed it and the center console lowered itself for Marida to climb in.

"Good, now watch out." Marida said as she picked you up out of the seat and got in as she put you in her lap and pressed a few buttons as the center console came back up.

"Marida! Can you hear me, Marida?!" Marida heard Emily's voice speak over the intercoms of the Unicorn.

"Yes, I'm in the cockpit and preparing to land the Unicorn." Marida said as she began inputting settings and plotting coordinates back to base.

"The Unicorn's flight systems will automatically take control once you input the landing coordinates and flight parameters. It's booster system is stronger than the Kshatriya, so brace yourself." Emily warned her.

"Roger." Marida said as she strapped you and herself into the seat with the safety belts.

"How did this happen? Did you activate it?" Emily asked as Marida didn't know what to say.

"No, I don't know how to explain it, so I think it's better to show you..." Emily heard on her earpiece as she entered a control room inside the base and opened up a communication line to the Unicorn from the console she was in.

"Hold on, I'm patching into the cockpit now." Emily said as she established a live feed from the cockpit as the others entered the room to see what happened.

Once the live feed from inside the cockpit came onto the screen they were watching, Emily, Casval, and Darren were all shocked when they saw you inside the cockpit with Marida as she was trying her best to keep you calm. Whilst inputting coordinates back to the hangar though, error codes appeared on the center consoles with a readout saying 'Biometric Reading: Invalid' on the screen. Suddenly all lights in the cockpit went out and the optical sensors shut down along with all other systems. With everything offline, the Unicorn froze in the air and began to fall tot he ground below. The cockpit shook violently as you screamed in fear while Marida tried restarting the operating systems.

"Oh no! The Unicorn shut off!" Marida said in shock.

"Big sis!" You cried while holding on to her as she tried bypassing the main start up process and tried a manual boot start by flipping the analog controls on her left.

"Damn it! W-Why won't you start?!" Marida yelled as you turned your sight to the center console.

"Please, wake up!" You said as you reached out to the center console. "Wake up!!!!" You yelled as you pressed your hand down on the touch screen.

With your hand pressed against the main console, the lights and optical sensors reactivated and the main engines roared back to life as the Unicorn slowly stopped falling and hovered in the air once again. You and Marida were both breathing in shock of what just happened, but Marida was even more surprised by how you were able to reactivate the Unicorn once again with just your will alone.

"Y/N..." Marida spoke up as you looked at her woth a scared face. "...Are you okay?" She asked as you broke down again.

"I'm sorry!!!" You yelled as you hugged her tightly. "I didn't mean to break it! I just wanted to be like Darren! I'm sorry!" You cried while holding her tightly as she was surprised by your sudden breakdown of guilt.

"Calm down, Y/N." Marida said as she stroked your head gently and you looked up to her. "No one's mad, we're just glad you're okay." She said as you just hugged Marida tightly and buried your face into the crook of her neck.

After she was able to provie some comfort for you, Marida input the landing coordinates for the hangar below as the mobile suit began its calm descent into the hangar. Once the Unicorn made it back through the hole it blasted itself out of, everyone inside the Hangar held onto the railings they were near and watched as the white mobile suit landed before their eyes. The thruster systems began to power off and the main engine started ramping down to a powered off state as Casval drove a scissor lift in front of the machine as Emily rode in the cart and once it stopped below the cockpit, Emily flipped a large handle down as the cart began to rise up to the cockpit. The hatch slowly opened as Emily rode the lift for a few more moments, but once she reached the entrance to the cockpit, you came flying into her arms.

"Mom!!!" You cried out as she caught you and held you closely.

"Are you okay? Oh my god..." Emily dropped to her knees and held you close as she almost broke down in tears also from nearly losing you in this accident.

"I'm sorry, mom! I'm sorry!" You apologized as she just held you cherishingly, relieved that her son was okay.

After the incident, preparations to leave had been sped up as all the mobile suits and necessities they needed were packed into the Garenceries along with Casval's Sinanju that would be near the deployment doors in case they needed to set up a defense. After everything was set up to leave, Emily had everyone plant detonation charges throughout the entire facility and once they boarded the ship, a timer was set to detonate thirty minutes after they had departed. Your father was helping you get into a space suit called a 'normal suit' as he attached an oxygen supply to the back of your suit for you.

"Dad..." You spoke up in a guilt ridden tone.

"What is it, Y/N?" Casval asked as he crouched down to your level and made you turn towards him, but you avoided eye contact.

"Are you mad?" You asked him as he just smiled at patted you on the head.

"We're not mad, Y/N. We could never be mad. We're also partly to blame." Casval said as you looked confused by what he meant. "We were suddenly forced to live here and had to leave a lot of friends behind...You couldn't have the freedom you wanted, and the only thing that could interest you were the machines we built. I guess it was only a matter of time before you grew so interested that you would have climbed into one of them to see what it was like for yourself. Though, it's not what you did that worries us, it's what you were able to do that concerns us." He said.

"What I was able to do?" You asked as he stood back up and placed a hand on your back.

"Come with me." Casval said as he lead you out of the room you were in.

Following your father through the Garenceries, you were taken into the mobile suit holding storage where you and your father stood on a scaffolding, and he pointed to the white Unicorn.

"You see that machine there?" Casval asked as you nodded. "That machine is special. Even though we created it, the Unicorn never woke up when either me, your brother, or even your mother tried to pilot it." He said as you looked to your father.

"It never woke up?" You asked.

"Yes, it stayed asleep ever since it was born. That is..." Your father trailed off as he gently patted your head and looked at you. "...Until it met you." He said as this confused you even more.

"Me? Why would it only wake up to me?" You asked in wonder.

"The Unicorn will only awaken if it deems the pilot that's inside the cockpit is worthy of its power. And it seems that it approves of you as its partner." Casval said as he crouched down to your level with a serious look on your face. "Y/N, none of us want to involve you in the dangerous things we have to do, but after seeing what you did today and learning that you were able to awaken the Beast of Possibility that we believe in, all of us have no choice but to put our faith in your choice. You are special. Far more special than any of us here, and only you can do the one thing we desperately need." He said with a regretful look on his face.

"What is it?" You asked your father as he looked over to the Unicorn one last time before closing his eyes and looking back to you.

"Before I ask you, just know that no matter what choice you make, me, your mother, and Darren will always be on your side." Casval said as you nodded. "Y/N...Will you pilot the Unicorn?" He asked you.

"Eh? Pilot?" You said in confusion.

"The Unicorn will only respond to you as its partner, with it, you'll be a vital asset to the battle me and your mother have been fighting for so long. If you and the Unicorn become stronger, then there's the possibility that all things bad in the universe can come to an end, and we humans will be able to truly understand one another. You can change the way things are now, and you can save the lives that none of us could never reach." Casval said as you looked back to the Unicorn. "I have no right to ask you, my own son, to do something dangerous like this...but I have to." He said with a slight tone of pain in asking his own child to do something so dangerous as you looked back to your father.

"Okay." You answered him.

"Are you sure?" Casval asked.

"Mhmm." You nodded as he just pulled you into his arms and held you close to him.

"Thank you, my son...I'm sorry..." Casval said as closed his eyes in fear of the coming future that awaited you and your family.

After answering their pleas for help in the coming battle and taking on the role of piloting the Unicorn Gundam, the engines of the Garenceries fired as the hangar doors above the ship opened and the ship took off. A few miles out, a black car stopped as the door opened and out of car, Elnora stepped onto the dirt below her as her hair was now dyed a different color and watched as the ship flew into the sky.

"Oh, seems we're too late..." Elnora said as she looked at the coordinates she had just received on her phone. "...Just when we found them, too. Well, no matter, I'll be waiting, Emily. I'll be waiting..." Elnora said as she got back into her car and her driver turned around to head back to where they came from as the hidden facility exploded and fires erupted from the self-destructing hidden base, annihilating anything that was left behind.

Once everything was destroyed and the Garenceries managed to hit a high enough altitude, Casval climbed into his Sinanju and was being deployed from the rear deployment hatch at the rear of the ship. Once the ship's deployment hatch let Casval out, he flew out above the Garenceries and landed on top of it as he looked up and his scanners picked out something above the atmosphere. With the help of Zinnerman and obtaining contact with other ex-military forces, Casval was able to persuade quite a few men to help as his scanners locked onto a red battle ship as the name 'Rewloola' popped up on one of his consoles with a detail specification sheet of the ship. A space tether was lowered to them as Casval used the Sinanju to catch it and attach it to the space anchor of the Garenceries. With them now tethered to the Rewloola, the battleship in the atmosphere above began to climb back out into space as you were dragged along with them and soon after, you had entered space and along with the Rewloola, two other battleships were gathered as reinforcements.

"Char Aznable." A voice spoke over Casval's intercoms as a connection was established to the Rewloola. "This is Captain Hill Dawson of the Rewloola. We'll dock the Garenceries on the underside of the ship and then transfer the mobile suits into our docking stations. After that, we'll set course for the remote base just out of reach of most systems." The captain of the Rewloola said.

"Thank you, Captain. We'll be sure to repay your kindness back tenfold." Casval said.

"Understood." The captain of the Rewloola said as he cut comms and the Garenceries began to dock on the Rewloola.

After docking and uniting with the rest of the forces that your father was able to persuade to his and your mother's side, you and the rest of the crew on the Garenceries were off-loaded from the ship and entered the Rewloola. Your father, assuming his new alias as Char Aznable, was coordinating with Zinnerman and the rest of the ground crew of the Rewloola on the importance of the special cargo they were carrying, the Unicorn and other mobile suits. While he worked with them and Darren chose to stay with Casval, your mother led you to the room where you'd be staying for the time being as she and yourself floated through the halls of the ship.

"It'll be a while before we make it to our new home, so you'll have to bear with a small room for now, my dear." Emily said as she stopped herself in front of a door and swiped her hand over a sensor as it opened to reveal a small living quarters for one person. "You can take your normal suit off and then we'll go find something to eat, okay?" She said as she put your bag on the side of the room, but noticed you weren't entering the living space and just floated outside the door. "Y/N?" She called in confusion.

"Mom, Dad said that I was special and that only I could pilot the Unicorn..." You said as Emily tensed up at the mention of this topic. "What did he mean when he said that I was special?" You asked as Emily came to the door and looked around to make sure no one was inside before gently pulling you in and closing the door.

"Y/N, there's something you should know..." Emily said as she sat you down on the bed and knelt down in front of you. "Your father, well, he's special also, like you. However, he wasn't born special...I was the one who made him special..." She said as she remembered enhancing and performing experiments on Casval.

"How did you make him special?" You asked her.

"It's still too early for you to understand such a complicated thing, so I'm just going to tell you this." Emily said as she took a hold of your hand. "We were researching a new type of human being. One that was well adapted to the environment of space and displayed capabilities no normal person could do. We called these beings, 'Newtypes', a variant of human that surpasses a normal human being. Your father is the closest thing that we could get to that type of person, a Cyber-Newtype that I turned him into." Emily said as you were confused.

"Cyber-Newtype?" You asked her.

"A Cyber-Newtype can display similar abilities as Newtypes, and our hope was that eventually your father would become a true Newtype being. However, it became apparent that he was not a true Newtype..." Emily said.

"How did you know he wasn't a Newtype?" You asked in wonder.

"The Unicorn." Emily said as you were surprised and confused by the mention of the Mobile Suit. "To pilot the Unicorn, one must show that they are capable of wielding its power and along the way when we were trying to activate it, when we saw that not even Casval could power it on, the only way to turn on the machine was to be a being capable of wielding its power..." She trailed off as you caught up to the scenario.

"Only a Newtype can pilot it..." You said as she nodded.

"When your father and I had you, we never thought that you would inherit his capabilities or deeper understanding of people. Y/N, you're the culmination of my life's work that I never intended on completing...You're a true Newtype." She said as a tear rolled down her eye.

"I'm a...Newtype?" You asked as she nodded.

"Yes, for the first time in the Universe's history, a new being of humans has been born, one that's capable of things unimaginable for humans today. You're the one we've chosen to believe in. The Unicorn is the Beast of Possibility...and you, Y/N, you are the Symbol of Hope." She said as she hugged you close to her and began to weep. "I'm sorry...! I never meant to place such a burden on you...!" She said as her body trembled in fear of what would happen to you.

"Mom..." You said as she whimpered while embracing you. "Mom..." You said again as she finally pulled away a little to look you face to face, but was surprised when you had a smile on your face. "I'll do my best." You said as she was frozen in shock from your words. "I'll become a good pilot, and use the Unicorn to save people like you said it could. I promise to live up to your expectations of Newtypes, and I'll make your dreams come true." You said as she broke down crying again and hugged you tightly. "M-Mom! I-I can't...breathe...!" You choked out as she just continued to cry while holding you, as she could no longer hide her youngest child from the cold, dark world of death that she and everyone else were already a part of, and had to prepare herself even more now, as the final piece to her puzzle fell into place and her plans of stopping and saving Elnora from the curse of revenge that she was bound to could finally begin.
