Chapter 10
I couldn't get to her fast enough. It would only take a matter of seconds for Betty to plunge the knife into Vicky's chest. I couldn't cover that ground quick enough. There was to much space between us.
With no other options, I lifted my sword above my head and launched it at her. It spun through the air as she brought her arm down.
The blade punched through her chest just as her dagger came down into Vicky's.
"No!" I yelled, running towards them as fast as I could.
Betty collapsed to the floor as I got there, my sword sticking out of her chest.
Her dagger mirrored that in Vicky's chest.
Vicky's eyes went wide, blood leaking from her lips. "Liv..."
I quickly untied her before taking her hand, tears welling in my eyes. "Vicky... Stay with me... Please..."
Vicky's eyes turned to me, a slight smile spreading on her lips. "I told you... I wouldn't be alone..."
Then, she went limp in my arms.
The tears leaked from my eyes as I rested my head on her chest, her hand still firmly gripped in mine. "No..."
I stood up, taking one last look at her, before my eyes shot over to the book, which sat on top of a small table behind us.
Without thinking, I quickly grabbed it and started flipping through its pages. I needed to find a transfer spell. If I was quick enough, I might still be able to save her.
I stopped on a page and ran my fingers along the text, finding exactly what I was looking for. It was a spell that might just be capable of transferring my immortality to her. What it would mean for me, I wasn't sure. But, I had to try.
I stood over Vicky, reading the words aloud. A dead language. A language that hasn't been spoken in centuries.
I finished the spell just as Robin was beginning to stir.
She struggled against her restraints. "Liv..? What the hell is going on? Where are we?"
Before I could answer, I felt something deep inside me. Something I've never felt before. A pain like no other.
I fell to my knees, letting out a scream as a burning sensation formed in my chest, swirling it's way up my neck. The pain was almost unbearable, until a ghostly fog started leaking from my mouth, followed soon after by a bright, white light bursting from my eyes.
I looked up as the two elements danced around each other in the air, slowly finding their way through Vicky's nose.
I finally collapsed as the last of the pain ran out of my body. My chest felt hollow, my breathing unnecessary. I felt weak but, somehow, at ease.
My eyes slowly rose, landing on Vicky's still lifeless frame.
I slowly crawled towards her, using the table to help me stand, seeing the color starting to return to her pale skin.
"Liv!" Robin yelled. "What the hell was that!?"
I ignored her, my thoughts were only on one thing and one thing alone.
"C'mon, Vicky. Wake up..." I took her hand in mine again.
That's when I noticed cracks starting to form on my skin, a dull light shinning out from beneath them.
"What's happening to you..?" Robin asked.
"Please... Wake up, my love..." I pleaded, the cracks spreading from my hand, stretching the length of my body.
I raised my other hand, a feeling that something was missing. Sure enough, two of my fingers had turned to dust right in front of me.
"Oh my God..." Robin said, closing her eyes.
I quickly looked back at Vicky, begging her to wake up... I had to see her one last time... Before I was gone for good...
—————
My eyes shot open and my lungs desperately pulled in air.
I quickly sat up, gasping as much oxygen as my body would allow, which was a lot.
Robin jumped next to me. "Vicky?!
I turned to her, seeing her still tied to the table next to me, then down to the knife sticking out of my chest.
I slowly pulled it out, the wound healing almost immediately. "What the hell...?"
"Vicky! Livia needs your help!" Robin said.
I turned my attention to Livia just as she collapsed to the floor, her face pale and cracked, a white light seeping through said cracks.
I quickly hopped off the table, kneeling next to her. "Liv..? What's going on..?"
She smiled warmly at me, running her remaining fingers over my cheek. "You get to live on, my love. For as long as your heart desires..."
Tears filled my eyes as her hair started to float away, half her face now starting to dissipate in front of my eyes.
"What have you done, Liv..?" I asked shakily.
"I freed us both from the curses that ran our lives... I'm sorry I won't be by your side anymore, to watch you truly experience life... But, I'll be sure to check in on you every now and then..."
A quiet sob escaped my lips. "Livia... please don't leave me... My life isn't complete without you..."
She leaned in, most of her body turned to dust, and pressed a soft kiss to my lips. "I love you, Vicky. I'll always love you..."
My eyes fluttered closed as I pressed my lips to hers one last time...
I felt a few tears run down my cheeks as I opened them, only to see an empty space in front of me.
The tears came faster as I scanned the unfamiliar room. "Livia... Please come back... I can't do this without you..."
Jack stood up then, rubbing his head. "Where am I..?"
"Jack, untie me!" Robin begged.
Jack quickly ran up to her, untying her. "What the hell happened to you?" He asked.
"I don't know..." She replied as she got to her feet, looking to me. "Vicky..? What happened here..?"
I ignored her, continuing to mutter to myself. "Please... Come back..."
Jack and Robin slowly helped me to my feet. "Please, Vicky... What happened to Livia..? What did she just do..?" Robin asked.
I pulled her into a tight hug. "She... She saved me..."
"But, the knife..?" Robin said.
I looked up at her, still holding her at arms length. "That doesn't matter now... The knife, the cancer... None of it matters anymore..."
Robin slowly wrapped her arms around me again, Jack resting a hand on her shoulder. "We should go..."
Just then did I notice Betty's lifeless frame. I looked down at her body with tears in my eyes. "Why..?"
I knew she wouldn't answer. I knew no matter how many times I asked, I would never truly know what happened here tonight.
I grabbed the spell book as Jack and Robin led me to the door.
We stepped outside into the rain, seeing Liv's car still parked there.
Robin helped me into the backseat as Jack started the car, taking off into the night.
I looked down at the book, memories of Livia still dancing around my mind. 'Please... Please come back to me...'
But, I knew no matter how much I pleaded, they would go unanswered. That my life would never be truly fulfilled... That my heart would remain empty until the day I saw her again.
My love, my savior... My Livia...
—————
I heard her cry... I heard her beg and plead... Every night before bed, every morning after she woke up. If only she knew...
I may have left the real world behind once and for all, but not Vicky. While I may not have been able to hold her hand, or feel her lips on mine, I never left her side. I stayed with her until the very end. She couldn't see me or hear me, but I was there, always and forever. She was the love of my life and while that life may have been over, I watched out for her. I slept next to her every night and stood by her side every day, watching the real world change around us.
We were two souls with all the time in the world, but it just wasn't enough. Two souls that were bound together for eternity... And then some...
The End
