CHAPTER 29: REHMAT
SHEHRY'S POV
"Sahab! Apse milney aya hea koi" I was about to pick her up for going to shopping when Ahmad came in and I frowned
who could it be?
"Acha mein aa raha hoon, shukriya!" I smiled and he left the room.
"Okay baby! You stay here...and don't you dare mess up with my things, don't move, just stick to bed" I pointed my finger down at her who kept on looking here and there with her big eyes.
"And for heaven sake don't cry" I literally clasped my hands in front of her as if she was understanding...or may be she was, who knows!.
Resting my plams over the bed I bent down and pecked her cheek softly, before leaving the room.
"Where have you been Shehry? I was calling you for last three hours" reaching into the hall I heard Aapa's voice and practically had to shove my fingers into my ears.
"Assalam-o-alaikum! Ji mein bilkul theek, buhat shukriya poochney ka" I almost fell down on the couch, saying sarcastically and she looked a little embarrassed.
"han han! Walaikum Assalam!" she frowned and I chuckled shaking my head. "I needed that script copy Shehry! I called you but you were not picking, I even sent you an email but no reply at all, ho kahan?" She asked and I sighed inward, kia bataoon apko k kahan hoon.
"umm Actually I was a little busy, am sorry" I tried to cover up. "And yeah I will send you the script as soon as possible" I added. "or you want the hard copy?"
"Mujh se ziada busy thy? Beti aai hui hea meri, poorey do saal bad or usey chor ker mein yahan beti hoon" she complaint.
"Tahira aapa! Ye to ghalat bat hui... beti ko chor ker bhi betey k pas he bethi hen na, ki ferk painda ae" I said cheekily and she smiled shaking her head disapprovingly.
"I have told you and I was right...tum se to koi naraz bhi nai ho sakta Shehry!" she said with a smile and I bowed my head a little down with my hand over my heart.
"Bus ap ki nazr-e-karam hea"
"Khair! Kia len gi ye bataiye? Tea? Coffee? juice?Thanda?"
"Ye kia waiteron ki terha shuroo ho gaye ho?" she said and I chuckled. "Khair, I would have nothing, bus I want the script" she said.
"okay! Abhi laya" I stood up marching towards the room when Suddenly the baby started crying and my feet halted.
"Who is crying?" Tahira Aapa frowned as I turned at look at her with a speechless expression on my face.
'Wo...TV laga hea"
"TV?" she looked at the huge screen at her front and then looked back at me, the baby started crying even more. "Ye to band hea" she frowned again.
"Sahab! Ye ro rahi thi buhat" I was about to come up with some other excuse when I heard Ahmad's voice and her eyes narrowed as she stood up and walked towards the baby.
"You have guests at home Shehry?" she asked looking at the baby.
"umm ji bilkul guests hen"
"Per hen kahan? Nazer to koi nai aa raha" she looked around asking, all suspiciously. Hen na phir Punjab police commissioner ki behen....huhn!
"ye hea na...guest" I hurriedly pointed towards the baby and she rolled her eyes.
'Ye Akeley aai hea?" she asked sarcastically and I laughed, but looking at her stern expressions I had to stop.
"nai Akeley nai...pata nai shaid ghalti se aa gai hea" I said stupidly and she frowned hard.
"Shehry! ye bacha hea k parosi ki billi? K ghalti se aa gai tumharey ghar?" she asked and I gaped, thinking for something worth convincing.
"arey! Ahmad batao na yar! Chup q kharey ho?" I at once looked at his face and he looked at me in shock. "Is ki bachi hea ye"
'Hen? nai ji... Sahab! Meri to abhi tak shadi bhi nai hui" he said and Aapa shot me a look.
"Ch! Yar bachey k liye shadi ki kia zaroorat?'
"nai nai sahab ji! Kesi batein kerte hen...." he said at once, a little blushing before he stepped ahead and handed me the baby and left the hall.
"Shehry! tell me who is she?" she glared at me, like Mom would have done if she was standing in her place. Really in k hotey huye Mom ki yad kam aati thi.
"Is she.... your?" she halted in her sentence catching up my expressions.
"naheen meri nai hea..." I said lowly looking down at her face. "meri bachi kese ho sakti hea ye?" I said to myself feeling a stab of pain inside all at once, the smile on my face faded away..
"Shehry!" she called me making me jump out of that painful feeling and I looked up. "I didnt mean to hurt you Beta!" she added in a softer tone and I shook my head assuringly.
"Apa! Wo actually... I found her on the corner of a road that night" I said and as expected she gasped, putting a hand on her mouth for a minute she just looked at me and her face saying nothing.
"Aapa! I couldn't take her anywhere else, kahan lejata isey? I had to bring her home" I said and she looked away, still saying nothing with her hand on her waist.
"Did you inform police?"
"No"
"Did you give the news in the newspapers?"
"No"
"Did you even try to search for her parents?"
I stayed quiet this time and she sighed in frustration as she started parading in front of me in the hall.
"Tahira Aapa! Relax....
"Relax? Are you out of your right mind Shehry?" she suddenly stopped and burst out, I rolled my eyes. "Ye kisi or ki bachi hea, kis ki?...ye tak naheen jantey tum or apney pass khamoshi se rakha hua hea, are you mad?"
"To kia kerta? Sarak per para chor, chala aata?" I asked and she remained quiet. "Or q dhoondoon mein is k Maa Baap ko? Kutton k hawaley ker gaye thy wo to isey..." I yelled and she looked at me in disbelief.
"mein do minute late hota na Aapa! To agley din akhbar mein khaber aati k ek bachi kutton k hatho...
"Bus karo Shehry!" she cut me in the middle, pain evident on her face and I looked down, trying to calm down myself.
"Police bhi woi kerti Aapa! Is k Maa Baap ko dhoond ker un k hawaley ker deti... wo Maa Baap jo insaan kehlaney k laiq nai"
"But Shehry beta! who knows...may be it was somebody else who left her over there and her parents are worried about her" Aapa said convincing me and I sighed a little saying nothing.
"I can't say anything about her father but trust me Shehry beta! is k Maa zaroor kaheen tarap rahi ho gi" She said softly and I felt pain in her words.
"I don't know... May be" I said carelessly and she frowned. 'Mein ne to aesi Maa'en bhi dekhi hen Aapa! jo apney he hathon apney he bachon ka khoon ker deti hen" I added with my heart beats racing up and my thoughts somewhere else.
"Shehry! forget about that" she placed her hand over my arm and i sighed. "Not every Woman is Sara" she said and I couldnt look up at her, it was the first time she ever spoke about her in front of me.
"This world is full of such mothers Tahira Aapa! and frankly speaking I am afraid of handing her back to her parents..." I looked down at the baby.
"am afraid they would do something wrong with her, something for which I will be held accountable on that day in front of Him" I added and she yawned widely, bringing a trace of smile at the corner of my lips despite all that pain.
For a minute i just got lost staring her face.
'What are you thinking? Are you going to...
"han mein paal loon ga isey" I said as she trailed off and she smacked her forehead with her hand.
"And what about the day, when her parents will come and claim their daughter?" she asked and I gulped down.
"Intizaar rahe ga us ka din ka Tahira Aapa! Jis din mil gaya na kaheen is ka Baap, us din poochoon ga zarror k itna bhi kia bhari bojh tha jo us se uthaya nai gaya, jo yun phenk aya wo kandhon se utaar ker' I said to myself before looking down at her in my arms, looking up at my face.
"Per is ki Maa ko to dhoondo.... kia pata Shehry wo...
'Han I think I should go back to that place and search for her maybe waheen kaheen pari mil jaye mujhey is ki Amaan" I cut her in the middle and she rolled her eyes before taking a step towards us, she looked at the baby taking her hand in her's.
"Chup to aesey ho gai hea tumhare pass aa ker jesey tumhari he beti ho" after a minute of silence Aapa said and I looked up at her face, she was looking down at the baby with a soft smile and I smiled down at her too.
"Farishta hea ye Aapa! Mein isey yunhi kaheen nai chor sakta...agar chor bhi aya na to sari umer is bojh k sath jiyoon ga k najaney kia hua ho ga merey peechey us masoom ka" I felt my eyes moistening. "Pata nai us k Maa Baap ne usey qubool kia ho gay a nai? Pata nai usey wo khushiyan mili hon gi jin ki wo haqdar thi... ya naheen?
"I can understand Shehry! what you feel but trust me ye buhat mushkil rasta chun liya hea tum ne beta!" I looked up at her who was wiping away a tear from the corner of her eye. "What if your Mom knows about all this? Wo unko kesey samjhao ge?"
"Mom won't know don't worry" I said.
"And what about work? Kal studio per is ko sath le ker aao ge tum?" she asked and I smiled.
"Yeah! will have fun"
"Damagh kharab hea tumhara, itni si bachi ko set per lao ge?" she scolded me and I pouted, as she messed up my excitement.
"You don't worry about your Drama, wo mein poora ker k he wapas jaoon ga" I said still pouting and she rolled her eyes.
"Tumhara kuch nai ho sakta Shehry!"
"Tahira Aapa! Ap fiker na Karen sab theek ho jae ga" I assured her and she said nothing.
"And please don't tell anyone about all this on set, not even to... Navera" I said and she looked at me with a light frown on her face.
"Aap ki beti phata dhol hea, khaber ka khabernaama ker de gi" I said making a face and she laughed hard all at once.
"Sahee pehchan gaye ho tum usey' She said and I smiled.
"Acha ap wait kejiye mein script laya" I said.
"lao isey mujhe de do" she said and for a moment I looked at her uncertainly on when she crossed her arms and shot me a deadly glare.
"mein bhag nai jaoon gi tumhari bachi ko le ker Shehry!" she said angrily and I chuckled, before giving her the baby.
"Who knows" I mouthed and almost ran inside before she could jab on my throat.
Coming out of the room, I handed her the hard copy of the script and she kissed the baby's forehead before handing her back to me.
"Whats her name?" she asked as we started walking outside.
"I dunno, I didn't get her birth certificate on that road, unfortunately" I said and she shook her head disapprovingly.
"Ek beti k Baap ban gaye ho ub thora sanjeeda ho jao" she said in mock anger and I gave her a salute.
"Yes Ma'am!"
"Tum nai sudher saktey" coming into the porch she said while her driver opened the door for her.
"Take care Shehry!" she looked at me with concern in her eyes and I smiled assuringly, she sat inside and the driver drove the car outside the house.
Beti....?? Looking down at her face I smiled to myself, thinking how God's plans work; how He snatches something from you and bless you with something even better.... how He balances the equation of happiness in your life.
HEER'S POV
Najaney kab hum yahan se jaen ge or kab tumhen dhoonden ge Emaan!
Pata nai tum kahan ho gi? Wo shaks kon tha? kesa insaan tha?
Q hum ne itna bara qadam bager sochey samjhey utha liye?
Q intizaar nai kia apney Rab ki madad ka? Q yunhi kisi k bhi hawaley ker diya tumhen?
Kahan hogi hamari bachi?
Brushing few tears away I tried to get busy in work.
"Abdullah to atey he is k sath kitna attach ho gaya hea" I heard her talking to Tahira Aapa while I kept on placing the dishes in the hover, standing in the kitchen. "Werna he is always so stubborn in meeting new people"
"Heer hea he buhat piyari bachi, bus buhat udas rehti hea. Samajh nai ata kia gham hea is ko itni si umer mein" Aapa remarked and I tried to get involved into my work as much as I could.
Kia bataoon apko k kia gham hea mujhe Aapa! Aulaad ka dard buhat buri cheez hea ye na jeeney deta hea na merney.
"Aunty! Aunty! Let's play call of duty" I was lost in my thoughts when I felt a sudden tug over my hand and I looked down at Abdurrehman, Sawera's 8 years old son.
"Call of what?" I frowned looking down at him and he rolled his eyes.
"Aunty! Call of duty... it is the most awesomest game, come lets play" he held my hand saying and I bent down, holding his hands.
"But Aunty has to finish some work, and... I have never played this game, mujhe to aati he nai khelna" I made a face and he smacked his head, leaving my hand I smiled at his cute gesture.
"I will teach you.... come please! Look how I smack Mamoo down in no time." he said boasting and I smiled, getting up.
"Okay gimme a minute...
"No....." he protested and I chuckled, raising my hands in front of him.
"Lemme wash them"I said and he waited for me there crossing his arms, I washed my hands and he held it tight before running out of the kitchen pulling me at his back. Entering into the huge lavishly decored sitting hall I found Faizan and Abdullah yelling aloud holding something in their hands, Faizan was shouting at the top of his lungs while Abdullah had a cute but horrid expression on his face who was just 6.
"I will beat you" he said in a typical English accent and Abdurrehman chuckled going near him.
"Bro! you are not even holding the console properly" he rolled his eyes and Abdullah made a face.
"Come Aunty! We are partners" Abrurrehman said excitedly while I was standing their at the back of the couch looking at the huge giant size screen on which they were busy playing some horrifying fighting game on extreme loud volume.
Strange creatures were fighting wildly at each other, without even taking care whom they are killing and I felt my head getting a little dizzy looking at all that bloodshed and noise.
"Umm no, I can't play... I have never played it before" I said hesitantly.
"Don't tell me you never have played COD" I looked at Faizan who had a weird expression on his face.
"Never" I said quietly.
"So what kind of games you used to play?' He handed the control he was holding, to Abdurrehman and got up from the bean bag.
"Luddo... karem...
I was in the middle of the sentence when he burst out laughing and I frowned, which made him control his laughter.
"Sorry!" he mouthed. "no I mean, these kind of games, I used to play Need for Speed when I was kid.... Tabahi game thi I must say" he said excitedly and I smiled lowly.
"We never had TV in our home for so many years and then one day I borrowed a 14 inches TV from my best friend and hide it under my bed, when my father came home, after work' I told him and he gawked my face in shock.
"Seriously?" he was literally surprised, I chuckled lowly nodding my head. "Was your Dad that strict?" he asked frowning and I couldn't look up.
"We were not allowed to listen or sing any song even" I said and his jaws dropped.
"Hitler's daughter you are" he said and I chuckled lightly. "Sorry to say" he added raising his hands up and I remained quiet.
"Faizi Beta!" Tahira Aapa came in the hall and Faizan turned to look at her.
"Ji Phuppo?"
"Beta! Your Dad called, he is leaving for Islamabad on some urgent call for a meeting with Justice Nazeer, he wants you to see him as soon as you can, kisi file ki bat ker rahe thy wo" she told him, holding the chord less in her hand and Faizan frowned, thinking something.
'Okay! It means I have to leave" he said as he sighed a little, I dunno why but I felt he didn't like going away.
"Han han! Jao koi bat nai Navi se phir mil lena" I heard Sawera came inside with a meaningful grin on her face and Faizan smiled, despite being all rough and tough he couldn't help hiding that blush on his cheek.
"Us se milna bhi nai mujhe wesey, is qadar koi be wafa behen hea na tumhari Sawera! Bewafaai per decrees lagteen na, to dafa 302 laga ker ander ker deta usey." Faizan said rolling his eyes as he picked up his jacket from the sofa and Sawera laughed.
'Meri bachi ke barey mein no hanky panky talks... okay?' Tahira aapa glared at him in mock anger and he held his earlobes at once.
"Meri itni majal?" he said and both of them laughed. "Chalta hoon, Allah hafiz!" he said and left the hall.
"Aapa!"
"Han Heer?"
"Aapa! I was thinking to look out for some place to live, I mean some working women hostel or workhouse" I said and she thought for a while.
"Why don't you live here?" Sawera asked.
"I can not live here forever, you will leave in a month and then I will have to look for some other place" I told her and she made a face as if didn't like the idea.
"Chalo abhi to maheena para hea na... let me think about it, don't worry! Sab theek ho jaye ga" Aapa said assuring me and I smiled lowly.
I couldn't tell her how desperate I was to go out and search for my dear life.... Jaan to meri merey pass thi he nai, usey dhoondey bager hasil kiye bagher jiya nai jar aha tha.
"Mom! I have to make a list before setting my foot on shopping, please help me out" Sawera said and Aapa nodded her head.
"Heer! did you take your medicine?" she asked suddenly and I looked away. "Heer! mein ne bataya hea na tumhen, tum theek nai hui poori terha to kaheen janey nai doon gi, samjheen?" She scolded me and I nodded my head uncertainly.
"Now go eat something and take your medicines" she ordered and I left the hall, heading towards the kitchen I kept on thinking about Sawera, Faizan and Tahira Aapa....
Ye bhi to log hen... kis matti se baney hen? kis siyaahi se likhi hea merey Rab! tu ne inki taqdeer?
Kun itni khushiyan de ker ek jaga, doosri jaga matam bicha deta hea tu merey Rab? Q tera insaaf samajh nai aa raha mujhey?
SHEHRY'S POV
"Okay! Here we are... come on baby!" holding her carefully in my arms I shut the door at my back before keeping the blanket properly over her and locked the car, heading towards the store I put on my shades and stepped inside, looking around at the vast variety of almost everything my eyes popped out...
"There is so much, and I practically suck at shopping for kids" I made a face as I remember how pathetic I always used to be when it used to come at Maha's shopping with Mom.
"hmm... so what to buy baby?" I looked down at her who was looking up at my face with her big pretty eyes wide open. "you don't know?" I asked and she yawned. "Yeah! Even I don't know what to buy." I shrugged my shoulders and headed towards one of the huge counters containing clothes.
"Can I help you Sir?" I was frowning looking at the collection of frocks and shirts when a sleek voice grabbed my attention and I turned finding a tall pretty sales girl standing there with a professional smile on her face.
"Yeah! please... ummm I need to buy some clothes for..
"Your daughter?" she hurriedly pointed down at the baby in my arms and for a second I went speechless. "Or son?" she added with a frown and I smiled.
"Daughter"
"Okay! How old is she?"
"I don't know"
Shittt! slip of tongue
"what?" she frowned when it slipped from my mouth and I chuckled at once.
"no, I mean she is a month old" I hurriedly said. "almost" I added to myself and she smiled in relief. Stepping ahead she pressed a button and a counter slides away making me face to face with a whole wide range of newborn clothes.
"they all are for newborns, Sir!" she pointed towards the line of clothes and I felt my head spinning a little. "Which one did you like?" she asked after a minute.
"ye to sab he achey hen..." I made a face as I couldn't decide and she giggled.
"To sab he le lijiye" she joked.
"Umm ek kam kejiye in tamam styles mein, ek ek colour pack ker dijiye" I said casually and she smiled nervously looking at the collection then at my face.
"Sir! They are 15 designs in total" she explained. "you want all of them?" she asked little confused.
"Yup! All of them" I stated and left the place as soon as I could.
"okayyyy!" I heard her saying a long okay, as if doubted over my mental state and I chuckled shaking my head.
"Clothes done...." I said looking at her in excitement. "Who says k Shehry ko shopping kerna nai ati?" I boasted and felt she smiled, my feet halted as my gaze got fixed on her face.
"Did you just smile?" a stupid broad grip was there on my face when I felt somebody halted near me.
"How sweet Masha Allah! Adorable she is" I looked to my left and found an elderly lady passing by, stopped, and softly touched her cheek. "Beti hea na?" she asked looking at me.
"umm ji! beti hea" I smiled and she touched her cheek once again.
"Your daughter is MashaAllah adorable" she praised and my heart skipped a beat at it.
"wesey apki nazeren jahandeeda (sharp) hen, werna pehli dafa dekha tha to mein khud nai pehchana tha k beta hea ya beti" I said innocently and she laughed whole heartedly considering it as a joke.
"kia nam hea is ka?" she asked.
"Um We didn't name her yet actually" I couldn't come up with a name.
"Chaliye jab tak nam nai rakha rehmat he keh lijiye.... Ek he bat hea" she smiled down at her.
"Allah buhat khushiyan de isey" blessing her, the woman left.
I just stood there for a minute looking down at her calm, peaceful angelic features and a smile spread across my face. "Ameen!"
I once again started going through the stuff when I realized only dresses won't be enough....
Itni to tatti kerti hea ye.... Is k liye to mujhe dus dabbey pamper k he le leney chaiyen. I rolled my eyes and headed to another corner, trying to find what I was searching for when my gaze shifted on a lady who was looking at something in the shelf, there was a belt tied up around her tummy coming from her back and shoulders, she was carrying her baby in that.
Wow! This is so effin' useful Shehry! I hurriedly walked towards her.
"Assalam-o-alaikum!"
"Wa-laikum assalam!" she looked at me a little confused.
"Ummm... are you married?" I asked stupidly and she frowned before nodding her head. "ji"
"And is this your baby?" I asked and this time she remained quiet, just frowning at my idiotic questions.
'Um actually I need some help" I said and her gaze shifted down to her in my arms, a smile came over her lips. "I don't know what to buy for her"
"Oh! First baby?" she asked and I gulped down, before nodding my head.
Kitna jhoot boley ga Shehry? khotey?
"What do you want to buy?"
"Everything" I hurriedly replied and she chuckled.
"I can feel your excitement" she smiled and then stepping back she grabbed her trolley which was empty and moved it to my direction.
"Sir! These are your items" I was about to say something when that salesgirl came and put the heap of dresses into the trolley. "Thank you for choosing our store for your angel" she smiled and left. "Have a good day"
"How many are they actually?" the woman standing there asked looking down at the heap with a weird and shocked expression on her face.
"15"
"What?... 15?" she gasped. "Itney sarey kaprey?" she chuckled once again before started looking for things in the shelves, she started putting different things in the trolley, like feeder and pacifiers and bibs and wet hankies and God knows what else... I lost the count.
Finally my trolley was covered with a heap of things and I literally stared at it for a minute.
"Did you put pampers?" I asked and she smiled nodding her head and I sighed in great relief.
"And I need this belt too... it seems really helpful" I pointed towards the belt hesitantly and she smiled, walking towards an other shelf she got lost for a minute when she returned she was holding a belt in her hands that she put over the heap in my trolley.
"Thank you so much! You were a great help indeed" I said honestly and she smiled warmly.
"Your daughter is really cute and MashaAllah, really lucky as well" she admired and I frowned.
"Lucky?"
"yeah! not every father treats his daughter like a real Princess" she said and I stayed quiet, unable to understand what to say. "Kuch logo k liye Zehmat ban jati hen betiyan, hamarey jesey mua'ashirey mein" she added grimly.
"Mager beti to Allah ki taraf se tuhfa hoti hea na? Zehmat kesi?" I said almost to myself and she chuckled sarcastically.
"Allah ap ko hamesha aesey he sochtey rehne ki taufeeq ata karey, and it was really nice meeting you" She smiled and I smiled back. "Same here". She left along with her son and I looked down at the little innocent angel in my arms.
Shaid tumhen bhi tumharey Maa Baap ne Zehmat samajh ker phenk diya tha sarrak per.... Unhen kia pata tha betiyan rehmat hoti hen.
Jesey tum ho.... meri Rehmat. I kissed her cheek bending my face down and inhaled her scent, with one hand I moved my trolley towards the cash counter while in the other I secured her close to my heart.
