The Family
I leaned heavily on Jin as he lead me to the shower, I was a mess, my hair greasy and tangled due to the previous night. My skin was caked in dirt, sweat and blood. My cheeks were tear streaked and my eyes sunken. I looked like death, and my eyes lacked the glimmer of youth they once had.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry that you had to see me like this" I stuttered as embarrassment caused my face to flush. I sighed heavily and looked into the mirror, I looked so foreign, hardly recognizable. I hated what I saw, I hated who I was, I didn't deserve to survive. I deserved the suffering, the pain, my stubbornness costed mark his life. He was dead because of me, I should of died, not him.
"Don't, there is no need to apologize. You have been through the worst pain imaginable and now all you need to do is wash yourself off and rest" he smiled softly causing my heart rate to increase. Why did he care so much for me? Why did he care at all? He shook his head and gazed at himself in the mirror, a haunted expression had settled on his face. He seemed to be going through pain as memories rushed back into his mind.
"I never knew my family... I had been raised in an orphanage no family, no friends an outcast. Every moment of my life was spent alone, the nuns always worried about me. They believed that I was cursed, a child with no past and no future. I became secluded within my own imagination, my dreams. I learned to fake a smile, and keep to myself." His voice broke slightly as his shoulders fell. His sudden urge to spread his story took me off guard as I watched him, curiosity silencing my words.
"One day I decided to get out, explore, So I snuck out and started to wander the dark streets. I was only a child, my hair cut short, my clothes clean but worn. Small, helpless, and alone, I kept walking amazed at what lay beyond the wall that surrounded the orphanage. Of course I got lost, turned the wrong way. The streets became less managed as I put more distance between me and my prison. The pavement cracked, the houses crumbling and coated in chipped paint. I was at peace, the atmosphere around me was dark but my spirit was bright, I was finally free" he smiled slightly as he sat down in front of the sink, I joined him and looked over at his graceful face. He looked haunted but a small glimmer of joy had reached his eyes.
"I was lost in my own world when I suddenly heard muffled sobs from down one of the dark alleys. An impulse to run overwhelmed me but my instinct to help was stronger. I resisted my fears and found myself walking towards the heart wrenching sound of a child's tears." He sighed deeply as he continued to spill his past, his secrets out onto the cold marble floor of the bathroom.
"The young girl sat on the stoop of a ratty old house, a boy sat next to her. He guarded her and whispered soft words in her ear to calm her tears. He was obviously her older brother, I could tell for they shared a bond no friendship could replace, a bond that only exists between family, a bond I never had." His eyes were closed now as he spoke, it was as if he was caught in a trance, trapped within his past.
"I just watched them" he continued while he ran his hands through his soft hair, "I watched them until the boy spotted me, the boy wasn't mad he was just confused. He invited me to sit by him, it was the first time anyone had ever shown me kindness, so I joined him on the stoop. At first the silence was awkward, but soon we were telling each other our stories. He was called JB, his sister was Eve." Jin smiled at the names of his first friends.
"You mean JB from Jackson's group?" I asked causing his small smile to flee.
"Yes that JB, he hasn't changed much, he's still full of hope. You see his parents were addicts, they'd string themselves up on the latest drug, and lose their temper." He shook his head and looked down at his long slender hands. "They'd try to punish her, hit her, but he always got in the way. He always took the hit for her, protected her. He always cared for her, and all of his goals for the future were to keep Eve safe."
"We became fast friends, every night I snuck out to visit them. They gave me the grand tour of Seoul, pointing out their hideouts and the places they felt safe. I almost felt at home, they became my family. For weeks I played with them, until one day they didn't show up at our spot. Once again I was alone, every night I waited for them, and every night I sat alone. They were the closest thing I had to family, and once again I was abandoned. He sighed again and looked over at me, his childhood glimmered weakly in his eyes, fading with every second. "I hated them, I felt betrayed, and alone, all I wanted was a family.
"Later I found out that their parents had died in some accident or something. They had run away. JB was only 12 years old and his sister was 10, I didn't see either of them again for ten years. I had left the orphanage, and found myself in medical school, that's where I saw JB. He wasn't there for long, his sister soon become one of the first victims of the itch, he left to protect her again. He gave up everything for her.
But for those ten years I fuelled the fire of abandonment and hatred, I thought if I ever saw them again I'd lose it and destroy the bond we had built. Only all I could do was stare. When I saw him again it was like I had finally found my family. The hate I had collected turned to love, he was... Is my brother." He smiled slightly and looked up to the ceiling.
"Why didn't you stay in medical school? Why are you even here?" I asked rudely, causing him to flinch in response.
"Isn't it obvious, they became my family all those years ago. I heard of Namjoon's cure and worked my way into his group, I need the cure... I need it to save my family. Namjoon and his crew soon became like family as well, together me and JB care for those we love, protect them. Together we believe we can find the cure and save our sister." A tear slowly made its way down his cheek leaving a shiny trail. By instinct I wiped it away my fingers lingering on his jaw. He sighed again only to push my hand away and stand up with a jerk.
"I only told you this so you would know, you aren't alone. We all have our reasons, our motives for what we do." He smiled slightly and looked down at my pathetic form. He almost looked like an angel, the bare light bulb illuminated his hair creating a golden halo. He seemed to radiate light, hope, he lost everything and he never gave up. He understood my pain but instead of shrivelling up and leaving everything to die, he stood tall and found a new reason to live.
"Now stand up, and stop losing hope"
