25|Call
CELINE STARED AT HER IPHONE, patiently waiting in anticipation for it to ring. She couldn't help but feel conflicted by this. On one side, she felt delighted to actually hear him talking to her. On the other, she felt nervous about what they were going to say.
What will I say?
What will he say?
I'm probably going to make a fool of myself...
Of all the times, she's never felt this giddy about a boy. Especially one she's never met face to face. But that didn't seem to matter. She's been talking to Finn for more than two months now and they never lack conversation. It is more or less the same as talking to each other face to face, right? Right.
But calling was a whole different field. There was no hiding behind the keyboard on your screen. Only relying on your voice to say your thoughts. No keyboard. No thumbs. No tricks. No blue ticks. No emojis.
An accidental squeal leaped from her throat just as her phone vibrated on the coffee table. She stared at the screen, taking deep breaths as she picked it up with a shaky hand.
Relax. It's just Finn. You'll be fine, she thought to herself while licking her lips. She swiped the screen to accept the call and brings the phone to her ear with eyes closed, "H-hi..."
Crap! Of coarse she was going to stutter like an eight year old. She cringed, hoping to drop dead than embarrass herself even more.
"Hi, Celine." Finn answered seconds later, almost breathlessly for that matter. He made her name sound unique in his prominent Irish accent and wished she could record him say it again. She could hear people mummering in the background and hoped that he didn't catch her stutter.
"H-how are y-you?" With her palm placed on her forehead, Celine internally screamed at herself. I sound so darn stupid!
The Irish wrestler merely chuckled at her on the other side before responding, "I'm good. Nervous?"
"That obvious?" she says before releasing a giggle of her own. Tucking some strands of her brown hair behind her ear, she plopped on the couch and continued to watch Monday Night Raw.
"Yes." he admits truthfully, which caused her to bite her lip timidly while looking down at her hand.
"Sorry." she frowned, shaking her head in disappointment. So much for being fine. This was just cruel.
"S'fine. I find it adorable, actually." her ears perked up at this. She grinned widely, thinking of their last conversation that conveniently involved sweets.
"Of coarse you do." she mutters, hearing another soft laugh from him. She liked hearing that, a lot more than she'd like to in fact.
"If it makes you feel better, I'm nervous too." Finn confessed timidly, Celine raised her eyebrows as she grabbed the remote to lower the volume. She sat cross legged and leaned back on the couch.
She asked, "Because of your upcoming match?" He would be, despite being used to it. She couldn't imagine why, though. He's a natural at what he does and he does it well. She watched his matches ever since Paige introduced her to him, as well as the other superstars through social media. She tried not to. Her past with wrestling had made her resent that sport, but ever since Finn...
"Partly. But mostly because of you. I didn't think your voice would be this wonderful." Her mouth hung open as she tried to think of what to say next. She could feel her face become warm because of the sincerity in his voice.
"T-thank you." she squeaked out, burying her face in the nearest pillow before submerging to reply, "And thank you for calling me, by the way. It means so much to me."
"I-It does?" he asks incredulously, his inquiry was followed by a crashing sound, which made her laugh as she could imagine what happened."I'm OK, I'm OK, y-you were saying?"
"Yes." she confirmed, smiling widely at herself.
"I must be pretty special, huh?" Her mouth opened to speak, but no words came out. Her mind went back to her conversation with The Architect, Seth Rollins, who so bluntly stated that he liked her. And so bluntly threatened Finn Bálor for her supposed choice she made over him.
But how could she have known? How could she have know that he felt that way about her? And if she knew, what then? What would she have done? Reject him? Because she didn't feel the same? Because she liked- "Celine?"
The brunette sighed deeply, closing her eyes to think. She didn't like how things ended between her and Seth. Celine wasn't one to pick fights. She hates bad blood. And the fact that she doesn't know Seth Rollins that well complicates things. She doesn't know what he might do. But from what she's heard from Paige, Seth isn't one for idol threats.
That alone made her fear for Finn's wellbeing. But there wasn't much she could do except warn him. "Finn, there's... There's something you should know."
"Tell me. What is it?" he responded immediately, concern laced in his voice. Celine didn't want to tell him this. She intended to keep her interaction with Seth a secret and talk to him once she's at MNR. Finn doesn't have to know what he said. It would cause problems between the two and she didn't want that. But she was scared.
"It's about Seth Rolins."
"What about Seth Rollins?" His immediate response frightened her even more. The way his name was hissed out through grinded teeth told her to keep quiet or suffer the consequences.
"He texted me... Said a lot of things-"
"What things?" Finn interrupted her, desperately wanting to know. Guilt gripped her heart. Maybe she shouldn't tell him. When he got silence, he practically begged her to say something,"Love, don't leave me hanging."
Love? she wondered, hoping that her ears deceived her. The word was so simple, so brief, yet it had a powerful effect to knock her mind off balance.
No, now's not the time. Celine shook her head, trying to shake off the creeping blush from her face. She had to focus. She had to focus. She had to focus, "H-he..."
"Was he being rude? Did he say something to upset you?! I swear, if he-"
"He threatened you." she croaked out, cutting him off then paused to breathe. Her heart raced erratically as she continued, "He wanted to know why I chose you over him-"
Celine stopped talking altogether. She clamped her hand onto her mouth, silently cursing herself for speaking before thinking over what to say next. It was not her intention to say that. Finn did not need to know that. He did not need to ask her questions or ask himself questions of what was going on between them.
Choosing Finn over Seth? Really, Celine? That was not the type of person she grew up to be. Choosing one person over the other just because. Now that it was out in the open, she realized what she had done. Not only was it clear to her, but why she actually made her decision.
OK, blabbering it out was not part of her plan. Especially if Finn was the one who heard it, but whether she wants to admit or not, she knew that's exactly what she did. Stupidstupidstupid-
"You... You chose me?"
"H-he also s-said that he'll prove to me that he's the better man." She purposely ignored his question. Finn noticed this, yet chose not to dwell on it now as continued to listen. "Finn, if I didn't know any better, I think he wants to hurt you."
The thought of her being concerned about him made him smile. He swore his heart skipped a few beats when he realized how much she cared to tell him, despite having to feel like she was tattling on another child at the playground."You worry too much, love."
Before she could utter another word, Finn continued to speak and hoped that he could somehow reassure the lass,"Whatever Seth might have said to you out of spite just proves he's not the man he says he is."
"Finn, don't you think he'd go to extreme lengths just to prove his point?" she inquired cautiously, causing him to pause. Finn knew he would do just that. He knew Seth and if he says he'll do something, he'll do it no matter what. But Celine doesn't have to know that. She doesn't need to worry about him. What she needs to worry about is arriving to San Antonio safely so they can meet for the first time.
"Celine..." Finn softly calls her out, smiling as he did so too. Her name was enough to enchant him and he wanted nothing more than to see her right then and there. Part of him wished he knew exactly what Seth said to her to rile her up, the other didn't care and just wanted to punch him in the face for being an ass."Nothing will happen to me. If he wants a fight, then I'll give him one and I'll beat the heck out of him. I have done it before, haven't I?"
The brunette smiled, their first match at Summerslam replaying in her memory. It was an amazing match. What they did for an opportunity to have The Universal Championship in their possession was simply extraordinary. And the result- The Demon King pinning Seth Rollins, to become the first Superstar to hold that title. "You have."
"See?"
But she couldn't forget how Seth injured him during that match. That was exactly how Finn lost that title in the first place, because Seth knew if he couldn't have it, then Finn can't either. What if Seth were to do the same with her? "Just be careful around him, alright?"
"I will." he assured. Celine heard another voice in the background informing Finn to prepare hinself in a few minutes. She frowned, knowing what this means."I have to go."
"Talk to you later, then." she said, turning her attention back to the TV. Finn was up next and that slightly lifted up her mood.
"Right. Bye, love." There it was again. That term of endearment that brought butterflies to her stomach. It shouldn't have meant much to hear him say it, but... It really shouldn't meant that much.
"Bye, Finn."
Before she could hang up, someone screamed so loud, she tore away her phone from her ear. "Is that her?! Are you talking to Celine, Finn?! What's her voice sound like?! Does she have a hot accent like Paige?!"
She couldn't recognize that deep voice and tried to listen intently. "Hi, Celi-"
Finn hung up. She snickered lightly at his friends' antics. They must be real desperate to meet her if they followed him around to know who he was talking to on the phone.
Nonetheless, she couldn't wait to meet them either.
