My heavy backpack weighed me down as I shuffled down the school hall. It was Friday, a week before Valentines Day, and everyone was already celebrating. Pink and red colors flooded the halls in streamers and hearts. Couples were glued together and public affection was of its most importance for couples to express.
In their eyes, at least...
I, on the other hand, find it extremely obnoxious. Yes, we get it. You're happy together and are going to love each other forever...
Says the person who broke up with their significant other last week.
Valentines Day was one of my least favorites. Now, I might just be saying that taking in the consideration I've never been in a relationship, nor received anything during this holiday of love, but still.
I shoved my over-weight bag into my locker before heading off to lunch. My friend, Mina, was close behind.
"Jaehwa!" Mina called to me. She paced down the hall in a sort of prance-like way to catch up. "The Cupid booth is set up today during lunch. Are you going to give it a try?
I blew out air from my mouth in slight irritation. The Cupid booth is this thing that gets set up every year around Valentine's Day. You pay a dollar to fill out a form and get put into a computer generator. It takes your answers and matches you with 'the perfect person' from school. How can a computer actually tell me who my perfect match is?
"People always do it, then never even go trough with their matches," I mumbled in reply. "What if you were to get stuck with someone that's weird?"
"Come on!" Mina begged, giving my arm a slight tug. "It's just a dollar, and it's something fun to do."
A hesitation sparked. I waited a couple seconds before making up my mind. "Fine. I'll try it just this once. No promises I'll actually go through with anything after I get my results."
I faced my head forwards as we turned a corner. My eyes widened with shock as I collided with someone, and a gasp escaped my mouth. We both stumbled back in surprise.
"I'm sorry!" he quickly apologized, picking up a binder he had just dropped. I recognized him from the halls, and he was on the junior varsity basketball team. I know for a fact that he's in the grade below me: a freshman. I can't recall his name, but I'm almost positive it starts with an S.
"You're fine," I told him. "I wasn't paying attention."
The boy stood back up, the tips of his ears turning to a light shade of pink. She showed a bright smile before continuing on.
"Awe, he's so cute and small," Mina cooed. "Like, baby cute, you know? I just want to punch his cheeks."
I chuckled. "He's only about a year younger. Plus he's already taller than you."
She rolled her eyes, but with a smile on her face. "Whatever. I'm starving, let's hurry up."
