Chapter 8

I woke up, again, gasping for breath. That man, that strange black haired, chalky white skinned man was the same from my dream of me and my mother.

He's responsible for her disappearance. I'm sure of it. There's no doubt in my mind anymore. Whatever he is, whatever he's in charge of, is dangerous and a feeling deep down told me to avoid him at all cost.

But another feeling made me want to de-thrown him. Some small part of me edged me forward, told me I could take him out, and that part scared me.

I sat up in bed and my hand crunched a piece of paper. It was a note from Grampa.

Elizabeth, I got a call and had to go in early. I won't be home until really late so don't wait up tonight. Have fun today, I'll see you tomorrow!

                                          -Grampa

Oh, well this is kinda perfect. I'm free to go find the Cullen house. I looked at the clock and realized it was nearing nine. I decided that it's a decent time to show up unannounced claiming to be the newest addition to the family.

I sound crazy.

I took a long shower, shampooing my hair with my favorite shampoo, deep conditioned it, and scrubbed my face with my favorite sugar scrub.

I got dressed, changed my outfit, and then changed again. I wanted to make a good impression. I ended up putting on a black pencil skirt that hugged my middle, a dressy black blouse, pearls, and black flats. It's an outfit I would wear all the time back home, but it was a little too dressy for such a small town.

I'm procrastinating. I ran downstairs, grabbed the keys to the truck, grabbed my raincoat just in case, and headed to the truck.

I drive down the highway, note in hand, and tried my best to find the road. As I crept down the highway I finally found it. Mike wasn't kidding when he said it was practically invisible. If I hadn't been looking for it so hard I would've missed it all together.

The drive up to the house was lengthy and it gave me plenty of time to second guess my actions.

What am I doing? If I show up I'll probably just mess up their whole dynamic. What if they don't like me? What if they don't believe me!

I should turn back,

I should leave now.

Then, suddenly the trees disappeared and a large white mansion loomed in front of me. I contemplated turning back before they could see the truck but stopped.

You've waited your whole life for this Elizabeth. Remember all those sleepless nights while you were up pacing your room, wondering what your family was doing? Remember all of your tears because you wanted your family so badly it hurt. Remember your pain, every time someone talked about their loving parents, or their amazing family, that stab in the heart you experienced but smiled anyway.

Remember the nights, the tears, the pain.

I sighed and pulled the truck up to the house. I took a deep breath as I climbed out and made my way to the front door. My heart hammered in my chest and my legs shook as I rang the doorbell.

"Hello, may I help you?" A sweet looking, short, caramel headed woman smiled at me.

"Umm...Is this the Cullen residence?" I asked nervously, my normally velvety voice jumped five octaves.

"Yes, who might you be?" She asked sweetly.

"My name is Elizabeth Masen." I answered, still not quite sure how to tell her who I was. I'm not quite sure what my relation to her is. Is she a younger sister of my fathers? They're all adopted anyway.

"Elizabeth Masen?" She questioned, her eyes looking a bit panicked.

"Yes Ma'am." I nodded.

"Come in dear, please." She practically pulled me inside and led me to the dining room.

"Just wait here a moment please. I'll go get my husband." She rushed off.

"Elizabeth?" I heard a man question her as they walked quickly towards the same room I was standing in.

The blond headed man rushed quickly into the room and looked at me for a long moment. He's the same man from the airport.

"Oh, hello there." He snapped out of it and smiled at me sweetly.

"Hello, I'm sorry to show up like this but..."

"It's quite alright dear, please sit, tell us why you're here. What can we do for you?" He asked ushering me to sit. He and the woman sat across from me with smiles on their faces.

"Well, I was actually hoping I could speak with Dr. Carlisle Cullen."

"Speaking." He smiled and my blood ran cold.

They must have been able to tell I was panicking because their faces turned into looks of pure worry and shock.

"Bu-But you're, you're so young!" I stuttered.

"Pardon?" He asked.

"You're Dr. Carlisle Cullen?" I questioned, still not believing what I saw. This is my grandfather? He can't be older than 25!

"Yes, I am. I have a feeling I know who you are, but just to make sure, what is your mothers name?" He asked and the woman grabbed his hand tightly.

"Her name was Bella Swan."

"Was?" She gasped.

Crap. I didn't mean for information to come out like this.

"What happened to Bella?" Carlisle asked sounding like he might cry.

"She...went missing shortly after I was born. The police pronounced her dead without a body." I answered.

"It's sounds to me like you don't believe that."

"No, I don't believe she's dead." I shook my head.

I had so many questions brewing inside me I felt I would explode.

"Oh my god, Bella." The woman cried putting a hand over her face.

"Elizabeth, what do you know about your father?" He asked cautiously.

"His name is Edward Anthony Masen Cullen, age 34, approximately 6 foot 2, bronze hair, gold eyes. His adoptive parents are Carlisle and Esme Cullen." I gave them a pointed look and Esme giggled slightly and shot a glance at Carlisle "He has four siblings Alice, Jasper, Rosalie, and Emmet. His biological mothers name is Elizabeth Merida Masen, although there isn't much about her just that she works a-"

"I think that's enough Elizabeth." Carlisle smiled at me kindly.

"We were curious as to what you knew about our family." Esme smiled.

"Honestly, not very much." I sighed "I have so many questions."

"I'm sure you do dear." He smiled sadly.

"Is...is he here?" I asked.

"No, not yet. He's arriving tomorrow. Everyone else is here though." Esme answered and Carlisle gave her a pointed look.

The same look I had given them earlier. So that's why Esme giggled.

"I'm not...normal, am I?" I asked.

"Not exactly." Carlisle smirked.

"And whatever makes me different comes from whatever my father is...whatever you are?" I asked and he nodded.

"What exactly do you think we are?" Carlisle asked me tentatively.

"I'm not sure... I just know you're different and I am too." I looked down at my hands resting in my lap.

I reviewed the information I had found out through my dreams. Suddenly I felt like my mind expanded and millions of memories flashed through my head, the whole time my voice echoed in the background.

I saw myself as a small infant, my mother smiling and holding me in front of a mirror, looking the same way from the meadow dream. I saw my first day of kindergarten, me learning to ride a bike, brushing my teeth, some of my cross country wins, things I had done with Renee, vacations with Charlie, me searching for information about the Cullens, my arriving in Forks, hanging out at La Push, searching the library shelves for the Cullens, my nightmare from last night, finally my internal battle to approach the Cullen house and the shock that greeted me seeing my grandparents so young.

My mind snapped back shut and I sucked in a deep breath and clutched my now throbbing head.

"Oh my, what was that?" Esme gasped "It was so blurry."

"I-I don't know. That's never happened before, what was that?" I became panicked.

"Calm down, calm down. You're okay." Carlisle hushed me. "What were you thinking so hard about before that happened?"

"I was...I was trying to figure out what you are. What I am." I answered.

"I want you to try something...try focusing only on one specific thing you know that sets us apart from normal people."

I closed my eyes and focused on their strange eyes. I felt that same expanding feeling, but not as intense as the first time.

My family's golden eyes flashed in my memory, then I remembered the scary black haired mans red piercing eyes. They were probably the same in-human...whatever. What set those eye colors apart? Suddenly I remembered something from when I was very young.

I was probably two. Renee and I were at the park and she was bickering on the phone to someone named Cathy. I was siting in my stroller and suddenly some man came up and tried to snatch me. I bit him. Hard. I remembered the taste of his blood in my mouth, the tangy yet sweet, hot fluid. I remembered I thought it tasted good, but wrong. I shouldn't do that, and I shouldn't enjoy it either. I think I understood what I was as a child but lost it over time.

My mind shrank back and I took in another deep breath.

"Vampire." I spoke calmly, the name suddenly coming out of my mouth and feeling right.
