Chapter 7

Elizabeth POV

"Hey you! Home right on time." Grampa laughed as I walked through the front door.

"Yeah, I just felt like a nice run." I smiled at him moving into the kitchen so I could talk to him easier.

"Well, I'm headed to the station for the day. You'll be okay right?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'll be just fine. I have an appointment with the librarian at one, so I'll probably spend most the afternoon there."

"The Library? Why are you going there?" He sounded shocked.

"Well, it's actually a research mission."

"Oh," he paused "back on the whole 'finding the Cullens' huh?" He asked carefully trying not to offend me.

"Yeah, I-I just have to know." I sighed.

"It's okay Elizabeth, you don't have to defend yourself. I understand. I hope you find what you're looking for." He smiled at me kindly.

"Thank you Grampa." I smiled and hugged him tightly, holding back tears.

"I love you Elizabeth, have a nice day, good luck." He smiled and headed toward the door.

"Stay safe!" I called.

He stopped dead in his tracks and turned back to look at me while tears brimmed his eyes.

"Always am." He answered and left quickly.

Weird.

I headed upstairs to take a quick shower. The whole time my family's faces kept flashing through my head. I wonder what they're like. I wonder what my grandparents look like.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, I pictured the man at the airport with the strange golden eyes. Wait. Gold. And he was on the same flight as me.

The man in the airport. Oh my god.

That could've been a Cullen!

I rushed and quickly threw on a pair of dark wash skinny jeans, a lovely blue blouse, rain boots, and a leather jacket. My hair was wildly  curly as usual and my green eyes popped.

I practically jumped downstairs and ran to the kitchen.

I grabbed the trucks keys and locked the front door behind me.

The large, rusty red truck loomed in front of me. I cautiously approached the door, unlocked it, and hopped inside.

The smells of peppermint, tobacco, and gasoline assaulted my senses. I held back my tears as I drove through town, following the signs, until I found the library.

It was a smallish building, brown brick with white trim around the large double doors and windowsills. It gave off a very welcoming atmosphere and I smiled to myself as I parked the truck and rushed inside to avoid the incoming rain.

"Welcome to Forks Public Library." A blonde headed man smiled at me from behind the large front desk. "Can I help you with anything?" He asked.

"Yes, I'm actually looking for the librarian, a Mr. Mike Newton?" I asked.

"Speaking." He smiled.

"Oh! Well, um, I'm Elizabeth Masen. I talked to you on the phone a few days ago? My appointments at one but I was hoping if you weren't busy you could move me up?" I asked.

He glanced around the empty building.

"I'm sure I can make room in my busy schedule." He laughed and motioned for me to follow him.

I followed him to a back room, sealed off and only accessible by a code.

"What is the family name you're looking for again?" He asked turning toward a computer.

"Cullen." I answered and he turned to look at me for a long moment.

"Who's your mother?" He asked.

"Her name was Bella, Bella Swan."

"So, you're the Cullen girl huh?" He laughed a little, turned back to the screen, and starting typing.

"Um...what?" I asked.

"I went to school with your mom. She moved away in Senior year when she got pregnant. Everyone thought it was Edwards."

"So, you knew my mom well?" I asked.

"Very, we actually dated a bit in Junior year."

This shocked me to my core. This blonde headed goofball did not seem like my mothers type at all.

"Really?" I questioned.

"Yeah, didn't last to long though. I decided to go out with a girl named Jessica, we're actually married now. But your mom and I stayed good friends." He smiled at me.

"So..." I tried to change the subject "finding anything?" I motioned toward the computer.

"Oh! Yeah! Yeah!" He printed off a sheet quickly.

"Here, this is every reference to the surname of Cullen in this place, well, you don't really need me back here. I'm going to go back to the front. Come get me if you have any questions." He smiled and left quickly.

I looked down at the short list in front of me. There were seven direct references and one in-direct reference.

Eight total articles to help me understand my missing family. My chances aren't looking too great.

I started with Carlisle Cullen, turns out it's Dr. Carlisle Cullen, the reference to him was just his medical license kept on file at the hospital that was about to terminate in the next three years.

Then I moved onto my father. The only thing for him was his information kept at the school. That was the same for his siblings.

Six down, Two to go.

Esme had actually designed their house in Forks herself so the blueprints proudly displayed her name. Wait. They have a house here in Forks. They got off at the same airport I did. They could be here in Forks right now! This is just too amazing! But there's no address...maybe Mr. Newton knows?

I set the blueprints to the side and moved onto the in-direct reference. I had to go pull a small, leather bound book off the Q shelf. It was a book about a tribe of Native Americans called the Quiluettes that were native to the Forks and La Push area. The same tribe Jacob and his family hailed from. I quickly scanned the book but found no reference to the Cullens. Then I remembered it was in-direct so I dove into the book more carefully. Apparently it's against tribal law to tell outsiders their legends but something did strike out to me.

It mentioned one of the legends being about 'The Cold Ones', their immortal enemy's. Immortal. Such a strange word choice.

I put everything back on the shelves in their right places and gathered the blueprints in my arms. I looked at the clock and saw that the library would actually be closing soon. I rushed back to the main desk to see Mr. Newton shooting rubber bands at his water bottle and momentarily sighed. How could my mother date him when my father was so much more interesting?

"Mr. Newton-"

"Call me Mike kid, Mr. Newtons my dad."

"Okay...well Mike. I found these blueprints of the Cullen house but there's no listed address. I was wondering if maybe you knew it?" I asked.

"Well, I've never been there, I don't think anyone has, but I've past by the access road tons of times. Here, let me write you directions." He took out a notepad and wrote quickly.

"Thank you." I said sincerely as I took the note from him.

"Here, let me take those blueprints back for you. You go ahead and head back to Chief Swans." He smiled.

"How did you know I was visiting my grandfather?" I asked.

"Are you kidding? He's been broadcasting it to the whole town for a month now. Everyone's going to know who you are the second you go anywhere." He laughed as he disappeared into the back room.

I rushed through the rain to moms truck and climbed quickly into the cab. The engine roared to life and I made my way back home carefully.

"I'm home!" I called, shaking out my wet hair at the front door. No answer. Grampa must still be at work.

I decided to cook for dinner meatloaf. I found a recipe and I had all the ingredients, it took me no time to get everything ready and into the oven.

As I was sitting at the table I couldn't help but stare at the carefully laid out directions in front of me. I have to go. I can't go tonight, that would just be an inconvenience, but first thing in the morning I would be out the door and on my way to the Cullens.

The Cullens. For the first time I actually have a real chance at finding them. I already know much more about them then before but to make things better I may actually meet them!

For the first time in my life I also doubted wether I could face them or not. Could I handle that? Being there, face to face with the people who left my mother heartbroken and pregnant? Sure they're my family and I'm sure I'll want to get to know them, in fact I'm very excited to get to know them. It's been that missing half of me for so long, it will be nice to fill that gaping void.

I'll guess I'll get my answers tomorrow, let's just hope my famous courage doesn't run out before I can get there.

"Hey Elizabeth, something sure smells good, what are you cooking?" Grampa Charlie came in and I quickly put my note back in my pocket.

"Meatloaf." I answered getting up to take it out of the oven.

"Kid, you act more and more like your mother everyday don't you?" He asked and I was shocked a little.

"I don't understand?"

"Your mother used to make that all the time because she knew it was my favorite. Then this morning you said the same thing she always did when I left for work." He smiled at me and I just didn't know how to respond.

"Well...I guess it's this town." I smiled back.

"So tell me about your day, did you find anything good at the library?" He asked once I had set the table and dished out some meatloaf and vegetables for him.

"Well, yes and no really. I found Dr. Cullens medical license on file, my fathers and his siblings student enrollment at the high school, and then a in-direct reference to them in a Quilluete legend."

"Quilluete? The La Push gang? Well, I thought we were done with all the hostility between them and the Cullens."

"Hostility?" My interest was peaking.

"Yeah, when the Cullens first moved here the Quilluetes got really defensive. They just flat out said the Cullens weren't welcomed around here. I had to put up with so much crap. Dr. Cullen and his children were nothing but good to this town, except your father of course but there's always one black sheep in the family I suppose." He grunted.

I knew Grampa hated my father with a burning passion, but he loved me too much to mention it. He was actually grateful to Edward just because I came out of the situation. But Grampa Charlie will hate Edward until the day he dies for what he did to my mother.

"So...do you think that legend is what makes the Quiluettes hate my family so much?" I asked, subtly reminding him that I consider them my family too.

"Probably, though I've never heard it. It's against the rules or something like that."

"Yeah, that's what it said in the book. I just thought you being such close friends with them you might've heard them slip once or twice." I dismissed the subject as I put the plates in the sink.

"Here, you go on up to bed. I'll clean up." He waved me away.

"Okay, goodnight Grampa, love you." I hugged him.

"Sweet dreams Elizabeth, I love you too." He hugged me back tightly.

My dreams were anything but sweet.

I saw my father standing there in the woods facing my mother. He looked pained and heartbroken but he was hiding it from my mother with a stone cold face.

"When you say we..." My mother trailed off.

"I mean my family and myself." He spoke harshly.

"You-You don't want me anymore?" She sounded like she was going to snap at my moment.

"No. Bella, I want you to promise me something. Take care of yourself, for Charlie's sake." He put his hands on her shoulders.

"It will be as though I never existed." He spoke quietly, kissed her forehead, and then he ghosted away with that same speed.

My dream followed him though.

He was running through the forest with such speed it was dizzying. He seemed to fly as he lept over fallen trees and expertly moved around the large trunks in front of him.

He made it to the grand Cullen mansion and collapsed on the front steps. Alice was suddenly sitting on the top step looking at him with sad eyes.

"I don't know how you did it." She said sadly.

"I-I, ugh," he stopped as a look of pain flashed across his face. His body seemed to contort in agony. "I can't." He simply muttered and shot off through the woods.

The scene changed and he was hiding in the shadow of a tall tanned stone building. Everyone around him were dressed in thick red robes. He was about to step out into the sunlight when out of nowhere black robed figures pushed him back. They dragged him through dark tunnels and to a large chamber where three men sat on thrown like chairs.

The one in the middle, the one with long black hair and chalky skin, smiled a very dangerous looking smile.

"Ah, young Edward. Such a waste, luckily we intervened on your behalf." He spoke in a very strange voice.

"Now now, let's not be hasty." Suddenly Alice came out of no where and practically danced up to the strange black haired man.

He held her hand briefly but something seemed to happen between them.

"Ah, I see." He paused. "A lost love has driven you to this point. A human love."

"Human!" One of the three men, the blond one, stood suddenly "A human knows of our kind!" He yelled.

"She's dead to me! I left anyway, she had no evidence, nothing to tie a trace to us!" Edward yelled at the top of his lungs.

"Brothers." The black haired one called everyone to attention "Let the Cullen siblings leave in peace. No more harm will come to the girl." As Alice and my father left, he smiled.

A smile that could be compared to a serial killers.
