Chapter 9

Biancha's P.O.V.

After the awkward phone call ended, we both kind of sat in silence, he rummaging over his desk and me fiddling with a pen I had found in my room.  We shared a moment just before that, and I don't know if he started to warm up to me, or did we just have a freak moment due to the mate bond. Whatever it was, I liked it. His chuckle is so adorable, I just couldn't help but smile!

After I finally escaped him and his mother earlier, I rushed up to my room, finding my way back to it quickly, thanks to Devlin who told me how to get back earlier. Violet vase, right hallway, painting of horses, second hallway to the left, final room. For a home strictly for the Alpha family, this home is gigantic. I counted 10  side hallways coming off of the main one on the upstairs floor, and if every hallway has 6 rooms, just like mine, that must mean that there are 60 rooms, and I didn't even see most of the first floor! My room in itself works like a small apartment on its own, and that's a guest bedroom from what Devlin has told me. Boy, these people must really like having money, or disregard the value of it. And to think that I spent 10 years of my life sleeping under a staircase...

Once finally entered my bedroom, I slumped down to the floor. Why do these people act like they have known me for years, when they haven't even met me before today? Dev acts like I've been in the family since the beginning, their guards greeted me like I'm a standard pack member and not a stranger in their home, and Ulrich's mother treated me like one of her pups! I don't know why that terrified me that much, it's just that...In my old pack, this level of trust towards a stranger seems like such a foolish thing to do, anyone could trick you, hurt you, take something from you in a split second! Never trust anyone you haven't known for a decade, my aunt likes to say. We got burned by trust multiple times, but this pack, which is obviously extremely powerful and much more influential, seems oblivious to that fact! I mean, I might have expected that from their pups, but a seasoned wolf like Luna Libra didn't even show a hint of suspicion towards me.

Is it possible that a neighboring pack to my own is so mentally different? We are barely an hour's drive from each other, we share the same forest, same sea shore, same mountains, even the same stretch of the international highway, and yet they seem so careless! Don't rogues attack them? Other packs? Threats from the Fleurs Noir? There is no way they are insignificant to everyone else, a pack this big? Ugh, I'm stumped. I wonder if Ulrich will be willing to explain it to me.

I sat on the floor for a few more minutes, listening to my own breathing, before I finally found the strength in me to stand up and start this little work study Ulrich's got in mind. I really didn't want to, I wanted to take it easy today! Oh well, either I would come to him or he would come to me, I just knew it. And from what he had said to me this morning, him coming for me is definitely a worse option. I rummaged through my room, hoping to find a paper or pencil of some sort, I would feel awkward if I had gone there empty-handed, and since my phone is back in my old pack, I'll have to take notes the good old fashioned way. Just my luck, a small notebook and a ruby colored pain waited for me under the lamp of my nightstand, neatly put next to a set of fresh new towels. This family has maids! That's amazing, I don't have to do any cooking or cleaning! To be honest that's the biggest relief of the day, I suck at any and all housework!

I quickly scurried off and out of the door, following Ulrich's scent to his office. At least his scent is useful for something better than making my mind go all hazy. Ugh, why does he smell like hazelnut chocolate and mint?! I always need to be careful when tracking him by his scent, I'm afraid if I take a strong enough whiff that I'll just get high off of it. I shook my head and cleared my thoughts, I really do get distracted easily, something I doubt my charming mate will appreciate. I sped up my pace and before I knew it, I was facing his impressive double door. I bit my lip, wondering if I'll catch him behind his desk, frowning at me again like he did this morning, or will I maybe catch a glance of any other emotion besides disappointment in his eyes? I wondered since I got here, why are his expectations for me so high? His pack is clearly doing fine, so it can't be that he needs an adviser or someone to rule beside him. The scary thought of  being just another breeding female flashed across my mind, but Ulrich, however grumpy and rigid he may be, seems decent enough not to just use me as a walking womb. No, that definitely can't be it. Is he old fashioned, so I might have to learn some crazy boring customs and etiquette? Well even if that is the case, my uncle and aunt taught me all the etiquette I need to know, thank you.

Ugh, it's time to stop overthinking everything! I just needed to go in and face the grumpy Al- mate, and whatever it is that I have to learn about. I pressed down on the door handle, the door opening for me smoothly, only to show the empty room, save for the portrait of a man above Ulrich's desk, staring creepily at me. I entered, the door shutting automatically behind me, and looked around. A bookshelf, a few sofas, one giant window, and a desk, that's all this room was made of. It's ok for an office I guess, but no flowers, statuettes, or even paintings(except for the creepy portrait)? Dull Ulrich, dull. The next thing I did was closely observing those few objects he had in his room, since there was literally nothing else to do. Bookshelf? Black, pretty standard, filled to the brim with old and new books, files and stacks of paper. The sofas? Also black, leather, a bit worn down from the years of usage I suppose. He could change those for something lighter maybe, although booze is easy to clean off of leather so I see the point.

I shook my head again, trying hard not to side-track, even though I was obviously failing at that like I always do. Nevertheless, I tried to turn my attention to the desk, but my goodness was that a messy desk! Stacks upon stacks of papers, files, documents, bills, mugs, empty food containers, electronic devices...It was an absolute mess, and if I stared at it for a second longer I would have to clean it all, but knowing me and my worse than average cleaning skills, I'd lose some super secret file and get yelled at, so I looked away a few seconds later, for my own sake. The only thing left to look at was the window, and I did not regret looking at that one at all.

The window was spotless, smooth and uniform, with a thin black frame surrounding it.  The whole look gave off a modern vibe, fitting it in with the rest of the office (besides the poor desk), but the window itself was not what took my breath away, it was the view I saw through it. You can't see it when you enter the office, you have to really look into the tall old forest around the mansion to spot a dim glow of something I didn't know was possible. Genuine, clear as day and yet hidden away masterfully. Everything, from the rocks to the streams to the water vapor rising off of the semi-secluded spring was coated in a soft blue glow, something so unnatural yet so fitting with the dark forest. I couldn't tear my eyes off of it, it was so strange! As if I could feel the cold vapor on my skin, hear the murmur of the water, smell the wet moss underneath my feet, but was no longer able to feel my heartbeat, my hands pressing against the glass, Aphrodite in my head, nothing! Where even was I?

I had casually watched small orbs escaping the bubbly spring, as if any other regular old spring did that. Looking back at it I guess the spring has a magic property, otherwise I'd be freaking out, like I am now, hoping that Ulrich didn't notice my fidgeting too much. The last thing I remember before Ulrich came into the room is following a special, small orb as it fluttered like a butterfly up to the clouds. Why are orbs in this spring? Why is the spring glowing? What's this feeling? I'll have to ask him about it later. Wait, was I supposed to ask something else? Damn it, I already forgot!

"Biancha! Are you okay, do you see something out there?" Ulrich spoke loudly, leaned over the table as I jumped up slightly and looked at him. Was I staring at the window again? Ugh, he was probably saying something to me, and he never repeats himself or something like that. I fought an eye roll and a cringed expression, and just bit my lip, looking like a kid caught daydreaming in class.

He, on the other hand didn't even try to hide his annoyance as he rolled his eyes and slumped in his seat."Alright, it doesn't interest you. Got it. Well, maybe you are more of a field worker. For now, you'll still be busy with paperwork."

What's he on about? Field work? What field work? Then he started talking about assignments and I swear I could feel my high school hatred for work rolling back in waves. If he starts giving out homework I'll be walking back to my old pack. Screw this guy, I doubt he'd care! You know what, let's just get this day over with. I just want to go to bed and go to sleep. I'll try to talk with not work mode Ulrich in the morning, I need some time to myself here.

So I grabbed a pen and started my first task of the day, signing Christmas cards. Fun.
