Chapter 16: The Compass of Eternity

The Crimson Wave sailed into uncharted waters, the crew on edge as they ventured deeper into the unknown. Seraphine stood at the helm, her eyes fixed on the horizon. The trident rested against her side, its faint hum a constant reminder of the weight she carried.

The map recovered from Caldera's Maw had led them to their next destination: The Shimmering Reefs, a treacherous expanse of jagged coral and swirling currents. Somewhere within lay their next lead—a fabled artifact called the Compass of Eternity, said to reveal the locations of the other Abyssal Keys.

An Uneasy Crew

Below deck, the crew gathered in the galley, their faces lit by the flickering light of a lantern. Rigg leaned against a barrel, his expression grim.

"We've been through hell and back," he said, his voice low. "And now we're chasing after some cursed compass in a reef that's claimed more ships than I can count."

Lorcan grunted. "You think we should turn back? Give the Order a free shot at the rest of the keys?"

Rigg shook his head. "Course not. But the captain's not telling us everything."

Callen, seated at the table, glanced up. "She's doing what she has to. You saw what happened at Caldera's Maw. This isn't just about the Order—it's about keeping the seas safe."

Rigg crossed his arms. "Aye, but what happens if the trident decides she's not strong enough to wield it?"

The room fell silent.

The Shimmering Reefs

The ship slowed as it approached the reefs, the water around them glittering with an unnatural light. Jagged coral formations rose from the depths, their sharp edges glinting like blades.

"Careful, Cap'n," Rigg called from the crow's nest. "One wrong move, and we'll be scraping this ship off the rocks."

"I see it," Seraphine replied, her voice steady. She gripped the wheel tightly, guiding the Crimson Wave through the narrow channels.

Callen stood beside her, his gaze scanning the reefs. "You think the compass is here?"

"If it's not, we'll know soon enough," she said.

The trident began to hum louder, its glow illuminating the water below. Suddenly, a massive shadow moved beneath the surface.

"Something's down there," Callen said, his voice tense.

The crew braced themselves as a colossal sea serpent burst from the depths, its scales shimmering like molten silver. Its glowing eyes fixed on the ship, and it let out a deafening roar.

The Serpent's Trial

The serpent coiled around the ship, its massive body causing the Crimson Wave to groan under the pressure. Seraphine raised the trident, its energy flaring to life.

"Steady!" she shouted. "Hold your fire until I give the order!"

The serpent hissed, its voice echoing in their minds. "Why have you come, mortals? The Compass of Eternity is not for the unworthy."

"We seek to protect the seas," Seraphine replied, her voice firm. "The trident chose me, and I will prove my worth."

The serpent's eyes narrowed. "Prove it, then."

It lunged, its jaws snapping at the deck. Seraphine thrust the trident forward, creating a shield of golden light that held the creature at bay.

"Keep it distracted!" she shouted, her focus unwavering.

Callen and the crew fired their pistols and swung their blades, drawing the serpent's attention away from the captain. Seraphine moved to the edge of the ship, raising the trident high.

The serpent paused, its gaze locked on her. "You carry the Leviathan's power, but can you command it?"

Seraphine gritted her teeth, channeling the trident's energy. A surge of water rose from the sea, swirling around the serpent and holding it in place.

"I can," she said, her voice like steel.

The Compass Revealed

The serpent let out a low rumble, its glowing eyes softening. "You have passed the trial, Captain Drake. The Compass of Eternity is yours."

The water below the ship began to glow, and from the depths rose a golden compass, its surface etched with intricate runes. Seraphine reached out, the trident guiding her hand, and grasped the artifact.

As soon as she touched it, the runes lit up, and the compass's needle spun wildly before locking in a direction.

Callen stepped beside her. "Is it pointing to another key?"

Seraphine nodded, her heart pounding. "It's leading us to the next piece of the puzzle."

The serpent released the ship, its massive form sinking back into the depths. "Beware, Captain," it said as it vanished. "The Abyss watches you now."

A New Destination

Back on open water, the crew gathered around the compass, its glowing needle pointing toward the west.

"Whatever's out there," Rigg said, "we'd better be ready for it."

"We will be," Seraphine replied, her voice resolute.

Callen placed a hand on her shoulder. "You've done the impossible twice now, Seraphine. But the deeper we go, the harder this is going to get."

"I know," she said, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "But if we don't stop the Order, no one else will."

To Be Continued...
