The Crimson Wave sliced through the open sea, its crew tense and watchful. The battle with the masked attackers had left more than physical scars—there was a palpable unease among the sailors as if the very air around them had grown heavier.
Seraphine stood at the helm, the trident glowing faintly in her grasp. Its hum was ever-present, a constant reminder of the power she now wielded—and the danger it attracted.
Callen approached, holding the parchment they'd found on one of the attackers. "This 'Order of the Abyss'... any idea who they are?"
Seraphine shook her head. "Only rumors. Secretive cultists. Merciless killers. Some say they worship the sea itself, others say they're relics of an ancient empire. None of it's good."
Callen frowned. "And now they're after the trident."
"It makes sense," Seraphine said. "This weapon can command the seas, and it's tied to the Leviathan's power. If they get their hands on it, there's no telling what they'll do."
A Cryptic Map
Rigg joined them, holding a weathered map he'd taken from the masked attackers. "We found this in one of their satchels, Cap'n. Looks like they were heading somewhere specific."
Seraphine spread the map on the helm's table, her sharp eyes scanning the markings. A jagged island was circled in red, its name barely legible beneath the creases: Caldera's Maw.
"I've heard of this place," Lorcan said, stepping up beside them. "It's cursed. Ships that go near it disappear."
Seraphine's lips tightened. "We don't have a choice. If the Order's headed there, we need to beat them to it."
Callen leaned in closer. "What if it's a trap?"
"It probably is," she admitted. "But if there's even a chance of stopping them, we have to take it."
Caldera's Maw
As night fell, the Crimson Wave approached the jagged peaks of Caldera's Maw. The island was a volcanic ruin, its rocky shores battered by violent waves. Steam hissed from fissures in the ground, and the air smelled of sulfur.
"Not exactly a welcoming sight," Rigg muttered, adjusting the cutlass at his hip.
"Stay sharp," Seraphine ordered, leading the landing party ashore. She carried the trident in one hand and her cutlass in the other, its blade gleaming in the moonlight. Callen, Rigg, Lorcan, and a handful of the crew followed closely, their weapons ready.
The jungle beyond the beach was eerily silent. No birds, no insects—just the faint bubbling of magma in the distance. The map led them to a set of ancient stone ruins, their walls covered in carvings of tentacled sea creatures and ominous symbols.
"This is it," Callen said, his voice low. "The Order's been here."
An Unwelcome Greeting
As they entered the ruins, a low chant echoed through the air. Torches flickered to life along the walls, casting long, dancing shadows. At the center of the temple, a group of robed figures knelt in a circle, their leader standing over an altar carved with the same glowing runes as the trident.
"Welcome, Captain Drake," the leader said, his voice smooth and chilling. He was tall and lean, his face obscured by a hood. "We've been expecting you."
Seraphine raised her cutlass. "I'll save the introductions. You're not getting this trident."
The leader chuckled, his voice echoing unnaturally. "Oh, but we already have it. Or rather, it has you."
The trident pulsed in her hand, its hum growing louder. Seraphine gritted her teeth, trying to suppress the surge of energy threatening to overtake her.
"You feel it, don't you?" the leader continued, stepping closer. "The trident's power is not yours to control. It belongs to the Abyss. Surrender it, and I might let your crew live."
"Not a chance," Seraphine growled.
"So be it."
The Battle of Caldera's Maw
The robed figures sprang to life, their chants turning to battle cries. Blades flashed in the torchlight as they attacked, moving with unnatural speed and precision.
"Defend the captain!" Rigg shouted, his cutlass slashing through the nearest enemy.
Callen fired his pistol, dropping one of the robed attackers before drawing his sword. "Seraphine, we need that trident!"
She nodded, raising the weapon high. Its golden light flared, sending a shockwave across the temple. Several of the robed figures were thrown back, but the leader remained unmoved.
"Impressive," he said, his tone mocking. "But you still don't understand the cost of wielding such power."
As he raised his hands, the ground beneath them trembled. From the shadows emerged monstrous forms—tentacled beasts made of black water, their glowing eyes fixed on Seraphine.
"Stay together!" she commanded, stepping forward to face the creatures.
The Trident's True Power
The trident burned in her grip, its hum turning into a deafening roar. Seraphine felt its energy coursing through her veins, intoxicating and terrifying all at once.
"You want power?" she shouted, slamming the trident into the ground. "Take it!"
A torrent of water erupted from the weapon, forming a massive wave that crashed over the temple. The tentacled beasts dissolved in its wake, and the robed attackers were swept away. Only the leader remained, his hood thrown back to reveal glowing, inhuman eyes.
"You've doomed us all," he hissed, his voice distorted. "The Abyss will not be denied."
Before Seraphine could respond, the ground beneath him cracked open, and he was swallowed by the earth.
The Calm After the Storm
The temple fell silent, and the torches extinguished. Seraphine sank to her knees, the trident's glow fading as exhaustion overtook her.
Callen knelt beside her, his face etched with concern. "Are you all right?"
She nodded weakly. "I'm fine. But this isn't over. The Order won't stop until they have this trident."
Rigg approached, bloodied but alive. "What's the plan, Cap'n?"
Seraphine pushed herself to her feet, her grip on the trident steady once more. "We find out what they want—and stop them. No matter the cost."
