Geno

In every sense of the word, Geno is an alien. He's not from Earth at all, and he's definitely never experienced anything like Earthling culture.
Geno came to the planet while he was in a state of hyper sleep. His species is one made completely of voyagers. They leave their home planet almost as soon as they're born. It is unclear how that process works. What we do know is that Geno's body is primarily made of a gelatin-like substance. On his voyage through space, his outside skin hardened into a small rock formation. It is unclear how long he drifted in space (Note: Hyper sleep is a state of near-death unconsciousness that the subject put himself into).
On December 12, 2013, Geno entered the Earth's atmosphere. The heat from entering the atmosphere burned away the hardened outside layer of skin. When he landed, it was like dumping a bucket of goo onto the sidewalk from high up. Bits and pieces of him splattered in a two mile radius. Miraculously, this didn't kill him (Note: These files refer to Geno as 'he' because that is what they describe themselves as).
The individual splatters of Geno's body are connected by the same hive mind, down to the smallest molecules. Analysis suggests that the connection would only fail if pieces were scattered across different galaxies. Geno would later talk freely about his experience. As the prices of his body slowly rejoined, his pieces were analyzing the environment. Geno has no sight or hearing in the way that humans understand it. Every bit of him is extremely sensitive to touch and vibration. It may be an advanced form of echolocation. It's so sensitive that he could feel light and sound bouncing off of Earth, and he followed that.
Geno can tell the exact shape and curves of objects by the way sound travels around them. He can tell the exact color by touch, sensing which wavelengths bounce off the object in question. In most ways, it's more useful than any other sense. He collected data about all the plants and animals he came across while rejoining. He talked at length about the various plants and animals. His last world had been far from its sun, and organisms were far and few between (Note: See entry 'B0M98' for more information on this planet). One of the first creatures Geno found was a Sciurus carolinensis, a gray squirrel. A piece of Geno landed on the small mammal just after striking Earth. He brought this information back to the hive mind.
The substance that makes up Geno's body has not been identified. The only native element in his body is pure arsenic. Arsenic is a common element, but poisonous in its pure form. This has led us to determine that Geno's body is also poisonous to anything that would try to eat him.
Other components in his make up are responsible for his gelatin state. Beyond each molecule's own system, Geno has no bones or organs. His body can stretch, compress, and bend into any shape. After tests, a few limitations were observed. Geno can not compress himself smaller than a baseball or stretch larger than 30 feet in length with a diameter of one inch.
A large squirrel is nearing the limits of his compression. After his individual pieces reformed, Geno took on the form of a gray squirrel. He easily knew its shape, and he had already touched it for color. His sensitive skin changed to absorb all colors but gray. Without bones, something so soft would usually crumple into a pile. Geno's hardening ability isn't just used for space travel. He can also stiffen himself to make a leather-like covering on the outside. The inside remains much more fluid, and helps him move around. Geno is certainly excellent with camouflage, but it's not perfect. Geno has a hard time replicating fur or hair. He can not harden small strands, so they come count thicker. He can not manipulate the hardened pieces of his body if they don't have liquid inside. It would be stuck in the hardened state. Geno's squirrel disguise lacks fur all along the body, except for the tail, which looks more like thick gray quills. The ears and eyes were also replicated, but they're not functional.
Geno could move about the forest freely in his disguise. He resembled a squirrel, but he did not act like one. Over the next month, hikers and campers reported the squirrel's bizarre behavior. Geno would later tell us that his purpose in the universe is to discover and document. Though he never explained how or where he sends information, Geno seems genuinely interested in learning about Earth. In his squirrel form, he would follow behind hikers on various trails. He would follow behind in the middle of the trail. Hikers became concerned when they couldn't seem to spook him. Geno didn't get closer than a few feet. Humans would notice him dutifully trekking behind them, and would run at him or throw things to try and scare him off. Geno would skitter back, but then return to observe.
On a few different occasions, campers tried to catch Geno. He could be found watching from a tree or under a picnic table. Some people set traps for him. They'd bait it with nuts and seeds, but that never caught his interest. He paid more attention to their human tools. They noticed, and started leaving household items or brightly colored objects in their traps. Geno admits that he went into quite a few of them, knowing it was a trap. His gelatin could soften up and slip out between the bars of the cage before rehardening and wandering off. One civilian claims to have grabbed the squirrel only for it to melt in their hands and drop to the ground.
After that report, a team was sent to investigate the claims. They were not expecting to find anything real. The reports only mentioned a small mammal with strange behaviors. Geno knew the park well by then. He also knew the type of people who came and went. Our team of investigators was new and different. Geno was watching from a tree before they had finished unloading their equipment.
The team did not notice right away. He was a squirrel, after all. There had been multiple of the small duty animals chittering and scurrying around in the forest. One unit member only took notice by how still Geno sat. He didn't when a team member yelled at him. This must be the squirrel they were sent to find.
Geno observed the team, and they watched him. The alien's patience wore out first. He climbed down from the tree to get a better look at the humans. The team could finally make out his strange hairless body and quill-like tail from that close.
The investigative team was trained to ensure that the subject of their investigation is not sentient before capture or containment. Intelligente creatures can often be communicated with. For all the time in the park, no one had actually tried to speak with Geno. He was a squirrel, after all. He found it extremely fascinating when the team started addressing him.
He stepped right up to the team when they asked if he would come closer. Geno himself would never explain how he could understand different languages, or how he makes his own sound, but many believe it originates from his sensing ability. Sense the squirrel seemed to understand, the team explained that he could not stay in the park because it put him, and the civilians, in danger. Geno's passive nature was not known at the time. Unidentifiable creatures pose a threat to public safety. The team told Geno they could take him somewhere safer.
Geno's documented behavior records him as very cooperative and trusting. He believed the investigation team completely, and began to change before their very eyes. He decompressed himself and began to stretch out. The team backed away in a rush, but they did not attempt an attack since Geno had not hurt anyone yet.
When he was done rearranging himself, in less than a minute, Geno resembled a human (Note: Shifting times vary depending on how different the new shape is compared to the last). The biggest difference is that he got the colors all wrong. He had never touched any human to figure out skin tones. He appeared to the team as a silhouette made of varying shades of green. The colors were copies of the forest around him. His face head features, but it was the same green colors as the rest of him. He also appeared to be wearing rumpled clothing, but it was part of his skin that had semi hardened (Note: Geno later became excited by the human idea of clothes, and wore them instead of making his own).
The team did not run at the sight of a squirrel morphing to have a human-like appearance. They had seen worse, and they'd seen better things that attack at first sight. Geno spoke then, copying the voice of the investigative team leader. He simply asked where they were going, and how long it would take for them to get there. Geno was actually eager to ride in one of the vehicles that the team was using.
He was brought to the nearest containment facility. It was quickly discovered that he was naturally passive. He had no aggressive response to any action taken by the observation teams sent to run tests on him. Geno seemed happy to help humans learn about him if they did the same. All he wanted to do was learn about Earth and experience the world. Some team members would even comment that he has a child-like personality and curiosity.
Geno today is part of two different investigative and observation teams. He learns remarkably quickly for a ball of space goo. He helps catch dangerous anomalies as long as he can help learn about them. His abilities and different forms make him an extremely useful asset (Note: See entry 'morphs' for more information on Geno's shape shifting). It is unclear if Geno will ever leave the planet, or if he ages and will die. Most in the company hope he will be with them for many generations to come.
