Just Friends
"I'm not interested in a-'relationship' right now", he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck and avoided eye contact.
"Oh-neither am I", the young girl said abruptly, clearing her throat. A blush creeped onto her cheeks in embarrassment.
"Really?" He said. "I've heard that before." His gaze shifted to the ground for a second before it returned to meet hers again.
She looked to the ground as soon as his eyes locked onto hers, for she was nervous, and though she wished it not to,
her face gave it away easily.
His grey eyes shifted back and forth on her as if they were trying to decide if she was worth his time. He clenched his jaw, deep in thought. With his hands on his hips, he faced the sky and let out a sigh. "Alright. Friends. Nothing more. This will be our motto."
"Wow, um...Awesome.", she ended her sentence with a smile and her attempted nonchalant answer was highly unbelievable. This caused the young man to let out a breathy laugh.
Which caused them both to go into a fit of giddy laughter, releasing the tension.
Together they repeated their new motto, "Friends. Nothing more," with grins plastered on their faces. The boy stuck out his rough-looking hand with his crooked pinky extended.
"Pinky swear?"
"Pinky swear."
Their smallest fingers interlocked and sealed the contract of friendship.
They stumbled off laughing and talking comfortably with each other, speaking of topics that only friends can speak of.
Little did they know that their contract would most definitely be broken.
