Twelve: Betrayal

"Wait, did I hear you correctly? We have to betray someone?" Ben asked. "The riddle said friends can have your back, but if you're not careful, they can turn on you. That's the best answer I have," Dusk said, shaking her head at thought of betraying someone in the group. "She's right. The answer is betrayal," Five confirmed while he read the instructions on the next challenge.

"You will send two guests into one of the rooms upstairs where you will find a messy room. You must search through every corner of the room and look for a diamond necklace, a quill, and a notebook with a cover of what appears to be gold. The first person to find these items will win the challenge," The group was confused, having no idea what that challenge had to do with betraying someone. "So basically, they are having us do a scavenger hunt and cleaning a room?" Klaus asked.

"It seems that way," Virginia answered. "Well, I guess it's time to vote again," Mckenna sighed. Once again, the guests wrote the names of who they thought should go into the room. Five walked over to the hat full of the votes, but before he could dip his hand in, Dusk spoke up. "Wait, Five? Can I pull the votes out this time?" she asked. Five seemed a little hesitant, worried that Dusk would freak out if she pulled her name out of the hat. But nodded and handed her the hat.

Dusk's hand dipped into the black velvet hat and pulled out two of the white folded up papers and opened them. "Maisie," she called out. Everyone in the group gasped and stared at Maisie with wide eyes. "What the heck? Who put my name in there?" she asked. Nobody answered, making Maisie even more anxious to know who put her in that life or death challenge. "Who is my opponent, Dusk?" she asked.

Dusk looked at her with sympathy before opening the other piece of paper and reading the name. "It's Five," she answered. "Whoa, I did not see either of those coming," Virginia gasped. "Who put my name in there?" Five asked. Nobody answered his question, leaving him angry and confused. "Maisie, I guess we should get this over with," Five said. Maisie had a feeling that because the challenge they were sent into didn't sound terrible, she saw a small glimmer of hope that maybe she and Five would be able to escape the challenge alive.

"Alright, girls. Hopefully, I'll see you soon," Maisie sadly smiled before she and Five walked upstairs and down the hall, coming to a stop at a closed oak door. "Is this it?" Maisie asked. "I would assume so. This is the only room upstairs that has a closed door," Five answered, looking down the hall. Maisie carefully wrapped her hand around the knob and the door opened with a small creak. She carefully stepped one foot into the room, and sure enough, she was greeted with a messy room.

Piles of clothes were piled on top of each other, along with various trinkets like candelabras, compasses, and maps. Five carefully followed behind Maisie, his eyes growing wide as he stared at the mess. "Alright, we need to find a diamond necklace, a quill, and a notebook that looks like gold," Five reminded her. The two competitors carefully walked around the room and carefully moved things around to find the objects. Maisie searched through a small chest. Her hand roamed the bottom of the chest and came into contact with something sharp.

"Ow!" She hissed as she pulled out the object. To her surprise, she had found the diamond necklace. "Five! I found the necklace!" she called out to him. Five turned around to see Maisie with the necklace clenched in her right hand. She looked down and saw Five had found the quill and realized they were now tied in this scavenger hunt. "Oh, you found the quill," she said. He looked down and became a little paranoid that one of them could die.

"Five, we may make it out of this. Just from the looks of the challenge, we could be fine," Maisie suggested. Five shrugged his shoulders as he let out a shaking breath, and they got right back to work with searching for the notebook. Maisie dug through one of the small mountains of clothes while Five looked underneath the bed. "I think this is it!" Maisie called out. Five looked up from the bed and saw Maisie had the notebook in her hands. "There's a message inside," Five stepped towards Maisie, and she read out the message.

"Congratulations, you two have found the missing objects! There is both good news and bad news. The good news is that you two have worked hard and therefore deserve to live. However, the bad news is, someone will still have to die. You must think about the people in your group and decide which one you will betray. Write their name down on one of the pages, and they will die a tragic death," Maisie and Five's eyes grew wide, and they looked at each other for a moment before setting the book down on the desk.

"This is what the riddle was talking about. We have to betray someone in the group, but who should we choose?" Maisie asked, looking over at Five. "We're safe, so we can't die. All that's left is Dusk, Virginia, Mckenna, Ben, Klaus, and Vanya," he ticked off the names. Just hearing the names of their friends sent shivers down Maisie's spine. "We should decide the person based on who's helped out the least," Five nodded at Maisie's suggestion and began to go over each person in the group.

"Virginia and Dusk have proven themselves more than once, so we can't choose them," Five said honestly, hoping to give her some relief. "I agree. Ben, he may have gotten Diego killed, but he's been good at helping us with the riddles, same with Klaus," Maisie nodded. The only people left were Mckenna and Vanya. Maisie couldn't imagine potentially putting Mckenna's name in that book, but she also couldn't imagine causing Five pain by writing his sister's name down.

"Alright, now it's Mckenna or Vanya. I think Mckenna's been more helpful, but I can't do that to your sister," Maisie said, sorrowfully looking at the boy she had admired through her fanfictions. "I don't want to choose between them. If I had to, I would choose to put Vanya's name down. The challenge that Mckenna and Vanya did, Vanya technically lost because she got Luther killed. So, I think it's her time to go,"

Maisie let out a shaking breath as she picked up the quill and dipped it in the black ink. "So, we're putting down Vanya?" she asked, confirming it one more time with Five. Five nodded slowly and looked over Maisie's shoulder as she wrote down Vanya's name.
