Nineteen: Rising from the Ashes
"Oh my god, is she okay?" Maisie asked as Klaus carefully laid Dusk on the grass. He leaned in close and listened for a pulse. He found one, but it was very weak. "Dusk, please wake up. I can't lose you too! I've already lost too much tonight. I can't say goodbye to you yet!" Klaus whispered to his lover. Dusk's eyes remained closed, but her breathing became more even, giving Klaus and everyone hope that she would wake up.
"Please, Dusk. What will I do without one of my sisters? You, me, Mckenna, and Virginia. We're the Creative Crew, and it won't be the same if you die!" Maisie begged, trying to fight back tears. Slowly, Dusk's eyes fluttered open, no longer red with rage, but back to the ocean blue they once were. "K-Klaus?" she asked, groaning as she tried to sit up. Klaus looked down at her and started smiling and chuckling with happiness. "Darling!" Klaus muffled as he buried his face into her shoulder before leaning in to kiss her soft lips.
The rest of The Creative Crew bent down and hugged her, careful not to hurt her. Dusk gathered up her strength to stand up, and when she did, her orange dress and flame makeup dissolved into ashes and fell to the ground, revealing her dark purple dress from before. "I rose from the ashes," she smiled. The others chuckled at her and they all embraced each other before Five cleared his throat.
"Look, I'm happy that you defeated Lila, but explain something to me. If you weren't born on October 1st, 1989, how did you get your powers?" Five asked. "Well, my mother was born on that day. I must've inherited it from her," Dusk answered. Klaus and Five looked at one another in shock. "Klaus, you do know what this means, right?" Five asked, trying his best to remain calm. Klaus nodded and glanced back at Dusk before look back at his surviving brother.
"She's one of us," Klaus smiled. Maisie, Mckenna, and Virginia all stared at each other, having no idea that Dusk had possessed any abilities. "Dusk, why didn't you tell us you had powers?" Maisie asked. "That's the problem, Maisie. I had no idea that I had powers until after the fight with Lila," Dusk explained. " Where is she anyway? Did she escape?" Virginia asked, looking around, hoping that Lila would not come out and scare them. "Lila is no more. She turned to ashes,"
The group went silent for a moment as they stared at Dusk. So many thoughts went through their minds. Maisie and the other girls had no idea that she would be capable of killing someone. Five was impressed that she had managed to take her down, and Klaus was both surprised and impressed with his girlfriend's abilities. "Wait guys? Where is the Handler?" Dusk asked, breaking the awkward silence. " We have some unsettled business!" An unfamiliar voice spoke up. They turned around to see The Handler was standing right in front of them with a gun pointed at them.
"Why did you do this to my siblings?" Five growled, trying to hide his anger but failing miserably. The Handler said nothing but continued pointing the gun at them, with her finger on the trigger. "This is for Lila," she said, about to squeeze the trigger and shoot Klaus and Dusk. But before she fired, Five spatial jumped behind her and took the gun from her hand, aiming it to the sky.
He pulled her arm back and snapped it in two. As The Handler laid on the ground, moaning in pain, Five aimed the gun at her chest and fired three rounds into her body. After the third round had hit her right in the heart, The Handler became limp on the ground. "Oh my god!" Virginia gasped, holding onto McKenna and Maisie for dear life. "Thank you, Five," Dusk whispered as she stared at The Handler's body. "Does this mean we're free?" Maisie asked.
Just as she said those words, a blue vortex opened in front of them. "We did it! We can go home!" Dusk cheered. The others began cheering as well and started to say their goodbyes. Virginia and Mckenna entered the portal first, disappearing into the blue light. "I'm going to miss you so much," Dusk muffled into Klaus's chest. He planted a kiss on top of her head as he rubbed her back. "Me too. But I will always be with you, Dusk. Anytime in any world, real or fictional,"
He lifted her chin so she was eye to eye with him, and the two stared at each other for a moment before they shared one final kiss. Klaus walked through the portal and disappeared. Dusk could feel her heart begin to ache already, and she looked over at Maisie and Five before she went through the portal as well.
"Maisie, before you go, there's something I need to tell you," Five said, grabbing her hand as she walked towards the portal. "What is it, Five?" she asked, meeting his green eyes. Five said nothing but started to lean in until his lips pressed against hers. Maisie was in shock by the kiss but slowly sank into it, and the two shared a long passionate kiss before pulling apart. "I love you," he whispered. Maisie could feel her cheeks turn a bright pink, and a small smile crept across her face the longer she stared at him.
"I love you too, Five," she whispered back. A smile of his own appeared on his face. "Will I ever see you again?" Maisie asked. "I'll always be with you, Maisie," he answered. She slowly nodded at his answer, and they shared one final kiss before Maisie walked towards the portal and stepped through it, closing her eyes as she imagined going back home.
