Jordan found himself whistling as he walked around feeding all the animals lately with a happy smile on his face. The past few days had him feeling like he was walking on the clouds. Since they shared their first kiss Jordan and Bethany had become inseparable. They took the time to get to know each other, they spoke about every and anything. It seems a smile was permanently fixed on his face whenever she was around.
He looked over at Bethany as she sang along with the radio. She was seriously off key but she was smiling and that's what mattered most. They were on their first official date. Official because he had argued saying the guy had to be the one to ask the woman out on the first date, she had reluctantly agreed saying as long as food was involved she would happily go along with it.
Instead of her contacts she had decided to wear her glasses, her hair fell around her face in waves and the knitted blue sweater she wore was the exact color of her eyes. Even with light makeup she was at her most beautiful point in his eyes.
They came to a stop in front of the local bar and he turned to look at her when she burst into laughter.
“When I said I didn't want to see another five star restaurant anytime soon you really listened! This is perfect” she exclaimed
“I'm glad you think so I had my doubt” he replied
He climbed out of the truck and rushed to get her door. As they walked towards the door he glanced at her when she laced their fingers together. The feel of her soft hands against his rougher farm worked hands was a perfect feeling.
A waitress greeted them and handed them each a menu then went off to get their drink orders. He ordered spicy chicken, onion rings, baked potatoes with a tossed salad and against his orders Bethany ordered the spicy wings as well. Lucky for her he was prepared and hastily ordered her to eat one of the rolls he had the waitress bring at the last minute.
Really she resembled a fire breathing dragon the way she was panting but he wasn't about to laugh at her discomfort to further embarrass her. He however switched her order to regular fried chicken which she happily dug into. She was far removed from the woman she was that usually watched for fats and carbs. Lately her motto was the more carbs the tastier the food.
“This taste better than sex!” She suddenly exclaimed which caused him to choke on a piece of potato that he was chewing.
He took a swig of his beer before looking at her.
“Come again?” He asked
“That's what she said” Bethany replied then erupted in a fit of laughter
He sent her an amused look. He had learned from her one night while they were wrapped around each other in bed that sometimes people replied saying ‘that's what she said’ to comments that could be taken in a sexual context.
“That good huh?” He said with a smirk.
“Yes oh my God” she said as she popped another piece of chicken into her mouth. When she closed her eyes and softly moan he knew he had to find a way to distract himself or else he would be a goner.
“Want to dance?” He asked
“Sure” she replied opening her eyes to look at him.
He took her hand and pulled her to the dancefloor where the band started a upbeat country song. He quickly learned that Bethany was just off key, off tune off everything where music was concerned. Still he smiled brightly at her. He watched as her hair spun out and bounced more with each move and beat. This was perfect. This was dancing and art coming to life, strong pointed moves didn't matter here. All that mattered was the woman in front of him.
He eventually lost himself in her smile. Her smile and laughter was contagious and he found himself laughing in equal measures.
When the music slowed down to something more romantic he pulled her closer and gazed into her eyes. In her eyes he saw hope but it troubled him that he also saw fear.
Is she afraid of me? Afraid of what she feels? Or is she afraid of what this could become?
“Thank you for tonight” she whispered
“Thank you for coming” he replied
“That's what she said” she replied
In the moment he couldn't resist her. He swooped down and captured her mouth in a passionate kiss. He groaned into her mouth when she reached up and grabbed a fistful of his hair. She clung to him as though she couldn't get enough and with a regretful sound he pulled away because they were getting carried away in the middle of the dancefloor.
“Ready for dessert?” He asked
She nodded, eyes clouded over with lust then he joined into her laughter when they pulled up to the bakery in town. When he said dessert he really had meant the food.
“This night is perfect” she said next to him
He turned to gaze at her. The moonlight made it easy to see her face as they sat in the barn by the open window.
“You're perfect” he told her and he meant it.
“No I'm not” she said wearily
He waited for her to continue.
“Jordan I know we're having fun together but you deserve much more than I could ever give you. With a past like mine there's no way you'll want anything permanent with a woman like me” she told him
“I think it's time you stop beating yourself up over your past. Leave the past in the past.” He told her as he took her hand in his.
“Jordan I did things, things I can take back” she told him
“It doesn't matter, that's not who you are anymore” he tried to reassure her.
“I will always be seen as that girl from highschool, the school slut” she said mournfully
This is not the way he wanted their night to end but if she needed him to listen then that's exactly what he would do.
“we all did stuff in our past that we can't take back” he told her.
“What did you do?” She asked looking up at him
“I fell for the wrong girl. A pretty face with a selfish heart. I allowed her to forcefully try to change me. At one point I didn't even know who I was because I was trying so hard to be who she wanted me to be. In the end it might have hurt me when she left but I'm glad she did. Once she left I could stop pretending” he replied
“Kind of like me and Javier.” She said absently stroking his hand that she held.
“Except Javier didn't ask you to be someone else did he? He asked gently
“No” she shook her head “He didn't. It only hurts that along with every other boy in school he only noticed me as more than the nerd when I returned to school with a makeover” she said sadly
“You slept with him?” Asked Jordan
“On and off. Whenever he was having trouble with Isabella. I would be his pick me up” she replied with a bitter laugh.
“And you fell in love with him?” He asked
He held his breath. The thought of Bethany being in love with someone else didn't sit well with him.
What if she still loves him?
“I don't think I ever loved him. I cared about him but the fact that I made over my own body just to please him shows I had no idea what love really was. I never loved him but I wanted to please him.” She replied
He released a received breathe.
“What if…” She began to say but he cut her off with a kiss.
“No more what ifs. Here and now. I'm giving you a new start, take it” he told her
“I'm scared” she whispered
“So am I, but I'm still here.” he told her
"You haven't tried to sleep with me, any other guy would have tried by now. Its because I've been with other guys right?" She asked
He saw the insecurity on her face. He reached out and held her face between his hands.
"I don't like that other men have known you in that way but I'm never ever going to hold it against you. In fact you might have been with other men but when I claim you, and Bethany?"
"Yes?" She whispered
"I will claim you. You'll feel like its your first time because it will be the first time you'll know what it means to really make love" he promised then sealed it with a tender kiss.
