Chapter Fifteen: The Years Pass

Well, just as one couple got together, another broke up. Bo was taken away from us. She was put in a box and I almost thought that Woody would join her but he didn't. He let her go. But it didn't end with Bo. Wheezy, Etch, and many others soon joined her as the years went by. Soon it was just me, Maddie, Buzz, Woody, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, the aliens from the Pizza Planet Truck, Slinky, Rex, Jessie, Hamm, Bullseye, and the Bucket of Army Men.

But we had all been put into Andy's Toybox and forgotten about. Then again, as of now, he's Seventeen now and off to college any day now. We don't know when since we're barely out of the Toybox nowadays. But these years have gone by fast. Faster than any of us wanted anyway. But that doesn't matter now. Woody has a plan to get played with one last time. We're waiting for the Army Soldiers to come back with Andy's phone so we can get his attention.

When they did arrive with the phone, we got it into the box and out of the sock it came in. Woody reminded us that we only had one shot at this. That's all we need. So, Maddie took out the spare phone we had in here saying that we were ready. I hope so. And, just in case, I pulled the bag my costumes were in and got them near me just in case Andy wanted a costume change. Right, time to have playtime.

Maddie typed in Andy's phone number and called it. Rex had the phone in his hands as it went off. Alright, show time. Andy made his way into the room and we froze. Just in time too because Andy opened the lid and started looking for his phone. I was facing away from what was happening but I had a guess that Andy took his phone back from Rex and answered it. But, of course, no one was on the other end.

So, he hung up and yelled at Molly to stay out of his room. Does he really think that Molly did this? He threw Rex back into the box, closed the lid, and left. Mission failed. We're never getting played with at this point. He's too old for us. Woody opened the lid to see the door closed and Andy was gone. What were we thinking? Teenagers don't play with toys anymore. They're at school or studying or going to college or hanging out with their friends.

Teenagers don't have time for us or they've grown out of us. Since Andy was gone, we took the opportunity to leave the box for a minute. I left my costumes in there since all I wear nowadays is my normal outfit with my fedora, cape, and sword. As we all started to walk around the room, Woody called us all for a staff meeting. Again? We wall gathered in front of Buzz and Woody.

"Okay. First off, we all knew Operation Playtime was a long shot," Woody started

"More like a misfire," Mr. Potato Head mumbled to his Mrs.

"But we always said this job isn't about getting play with," Woody continued, "it's about..."

"Being there for Andy, we know," I said

"But we can try again! Right?" Rex asked

Woody sighed "I'm calling it, guys. We're closing up shop."

"What?" Everyone asked

"Andy's going to college any day now. That was our last shot."

"I hate to say it but, Woody's right," I said

"We're going into attic mode, folks," Buzz spoke up. "Keep your accessories with you at all times. Spare parts, batteries, anything you need for orderly transition."

"Orderly?!" Mr. Potato Head asked, "Don't you get it?! We're done! Finished! Over the hill!"

"Hey, hey, hey now! Come on, guys! We all knew this day was coming," Woody said

As Woody was arguing his point about all this Buzz noticed something and spoke up

"Hey, Sarge! What are you doing?"

We looked over to see the Sarge and the last two army men making their way to the window.

"The war's over, folks," Sarge said, "Me and the boys are moving on."

"Moving on?!" Woody asked

"You're going AWOL?!" Buzz asked

"We've done our duty. Andy's grown up," Sarge said

"Let's face it when the trash bags come out, we army guys are the first to go,'" One of the soldiers said

"Trash bags?" Buzz asked

"Who said anything about trash bags?" I asked

"It has been an honor serving with you. Good luck, folks," Sarge saluted us

One of the men grabbed Sarge and they parachute out of the window.

"You're gonna need it," the second Soldier said before following.

Woody tried telling them to wait but they were already gone. That's when everyone started panicking at the mention of trash bags. They all thought we were going to get thrown away. This is Andy we're talking about. He wouldn't throw us away. Would he?

"Hold on now. Wait a minute! Quiet!" Woody shut everyone up, "No one's getting thrown out, okay?! We're all still here! I mean, yeah we lost friends along the way. Wheezy and Etch and..."

"Bo Peep?" Rex spoke up

That's a loss Woody hasn't gotten over. But I sympathise with him. It's the same pain I felt when I let Christopher go in our story. Not that I used that as a reason to connect with Woody. It's not right.

"Yeah. Even Bo," Woody said sadly before ignoring it, "All good toys who've gone on to new owners. But through every yard sale, every spring cleaning, Andy held onto us. He must care for us or we won't be here. You wait. Andy's gonna tuck us in the attic. It'll be safe and warm..."

"And we'll all be together," Buzz spoke up

"Exactly! There's games up there, and books, and..."

"The race car track!"

"The race car track. Thank you!"

"And the old TV," Maddie said

"There you go, the old TV," Woody said loving the positivity so far, "And those guys from the Christmas decorations box. They're quite fun, right?"

I would say otherwise and so would everyone else. But at least they would be good company.

"And someday, if we're lucky, Andy may have kids of his own," Woody said

"And then he'll play with us then. Right?" Rex asked

"We'll always be there for him."

"Come on, guys. Let's get our parts together, get ready, and go out on a high note," Buzz said joining in on the positivity.

That won't last long. And neither will we by the time Andy moves out. But Woody was still staying positive saying that Andy was going to take care of us. Guaranteeing that statement, even. I think Woody is promising too much at this point. We all know what our fate will be and that is either being sold on the internet or being up in the attic. And I honestly wouldn't mind either of those options. But we soon heard Andy coming back upstairs with Molly so we all went back into the box.
