Chapter Eight: Another New Toy

Well, I was right, the new figure has Buzz fever. Whatever this Lady America is seems to think that she was once a girl from WW2 who wanted to join the army but she was a woman AND she had a few health problems. So, she agreed to an experiment that made her well, a little taller, super strength, and abilities. She's worse than Buzz. Her real name is Maddie Rogers. And she's very set on whatever her backstory is.

I never really bothered to listen. Buzz was enough for me. Once Christmas was over, Maddie was still committed to her past. We've all agreed to help her get over it but nothing has happened so far. Andy soon got comics of the character she's based on so I had a secret read of them. Well, she was right about her past but she didn't do any of this.

We're going to have a hard time getting her to believe us at this rate. But, one night, while  Andy was asleep, I was at the window still watching the snowfall. It'll still be snowing for another two months and I don't want to be out in it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Maddie climb up to me and sit opposite me.

"Hello Ma'am," Maddie said

"Mademoiselle Rogers," I greeted.

Things went quiet.

"So... are you some kind of Phantom of the Opera?" Maddie asked

I looked at her rather surprised.

"What? There are two movies about you. I watched one before I went into the ice two years later," Maddie said

"I am the Phantom of the Opera," I said, "I'm a female version of my male counterpart. I've never met him but we're the same."

"So you have a missing twin?"

"You might say that. But I'm part of the musical that was made about my story."

"You have a musical about you?"

"The male version of myself. It came out before you woke from the ice."

Maddie nodded, "I should give it a watch."

I gave a nod and looked out of the window again. We ended up talking more about our different versions of what we're based on and we got along surprisingly well. But we were talking about it like we were from our own universes. She still didn't think she was a toy.

"Maddie?" I said stopping her story

"Yes?" Maddie asked

"Can I be straight with you about something?"

"Of course."

"You're not a superhero. Maybe who you're based on is but, here, in Andy's room, you're a toy. You were made to be played with. Now, I gave Buzz a strong lecture years ago about this but I'll try to change it up for you. When you're a toy, you can be anyone. One day, you can be Lady America, the next, you'll be Mrs. Baker the teacher. It just depends on what Andy chooses."

"I'm one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I'm not a toy."

"Maddie, not in this world. When I first woke up, I wanted to be with my lover, Christopher. But I quickly learned what I was when I saw I was hanging from a hanger, in a box, and not in my lair. As I watched kid after kid ignore me, I took the time to realise what I was. I was a toy. I'm not a real person who writes music for a man I taught to sing. Yes, I can do that but that wasn't who I was."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that there's a difference between who you are, and what you're supposed to be. You're supposed to be the leader of a team of strange people. I'm supposed to be a deformed girl who terrorizes an Opera house while claiming to be a ghost. That's what we're supposed to be. But I'm really just a toy who wants to get by with whatever kid I'm given to, whether I get played with or not. I'm just happy to be out of my box and have the freedom to leave the house or wander around whenever I want. Now you, I don't know. That's what you have to figure out. All you have to remember is that there is a kid that you must take care of until your job is done. I don't know what it is yet but, one day, we'll find out. As long as you're there for Andy whenever he feels down, lost, or just to be there to play with, it doesn't matter who you are really. He'll never know but at least you'll be you and... that's all that matters. It took Buzz a while to figure that out but I know you can do the same. If he can do it, so can you."

Maddie stayed silent as she thought about it. I left her to think about it and went back to my stand where I had left my bag and things. But I think my little lesson did something. Maddie stopped the whole Superhero thing and just became her own person. I was happy to see that. And, because of our interaction, we became rather good friends.

She even asked me a question I hadn't even thought about: Do I sing like life is a musical? Well, so far, I haven't nor have I had any reason to. Well, I hope I don't do that because that might be weird to everyone else. I can sing, I know that just not an instant that I just break out into song randomly. But that doesn't matter. I just hope things stay how they are now. Just normal, no drama, and no more new toys with Buzz fever. It's a little irritating now.

(A/N: I don't think this chapter made any sense. See you in the next film!)
