Training Troubles
A few days later, the students, excluding Tigress, resumed training. Tigress still had another four days of bedrest before she was even allowed to get up and walk around.
"Good morning, students," Shifu greeted as he watched everyone get up out of their rooms.
"Good morning, master" the students called out in unison.
"Head into the training hall and begin warming up," the master instructed them. "I'll be along shortly after I check up on Tigress."
The students bowed their heads and headed outside. Shifu walked to Tigress room, watching her sit up easily.
"How's your chest?" he asked her.
"Much better," Tigress answered. The pain had stopped about two days ago, relieving Tigress as she hadn't had much luck falling asleep because of the loose ribs. "I could get up now if the doctor hadn't insisted I stayed in bed."
"Better safe than sorry," Shifu told her. "But on the bright side, you only have four more days of bedrest until you can finally go and explore."
"Then I'll be counting down the days until I can actually perform kung fu," Tigress replied with a sigh.
"And even then, you'll be taking it easy," Shifu told her sternly. "I'm doing easy kung fu with the others since I want to make sure that their injuries haven't hindered them in any way."
"Understandable," Tigress replied.
"We'll be in the training hall for most of the day," Shifu informed her. "So you won't have much of a chance to be entertained."
"I understand master. I'll be perfectly fine."
"Very well. Po will be in soon with breakfast, and after that, we'll see you later on today."
"Yes, master."
With that, Shifu walked out, gently shutting the master's door behind him.
Back in the training hall, Po and the other five were stretching and warming up, getting back into the kung fu swing. Shifu entered the training hall after a few minutes and announced, "Lets get back into the swing of things. We're going to take it a bit easy today since I want to ease Crane back in due to his wing just healing up."
"Thank you, Master Shifu," Crane said gratefully.
"We're going to start today with a few sparring rounds. Afterwards, we're going to go through a course run through the obstacles in here. After lunch, we're going to meditate and practice using some of the weapons. Lets begin with Po and Mantis."
The masters nodded, heading onto the side of the training hall as Mantis and Po got into fighting positions.
"Begin," Shifu commanded.
Mantis jumped at Po and knocked him onto the ground, but Po was quick to launch himself back on his feet in time to dodge the next blow. Mantis threw a few more punches which were quick to be blocked but then went for Po's feet. Po flipped over the bug, squashing him when he landed onto the ground.
"Ow," Mantis groaned irritably.
"Sorry, Mantis" Po apologized. He got up and helped Mantis to his feet, only for Mantis to take a hold of his paw and flip him onto the ground with a battle cry. Po retaliated by flinging Mantis into the wall, causing Shifu to call a KO.
"Nicely done, Dragon Warrior," he acknowledged. "Next time though, don't let your guard down. As I'm sure you're well aware, doing so can easily result in life or death."
Po caught a glimpse of light, his mind flashing back to when he had let Shen escape after discovering he knew about his past. He swallowed. "Right," he replied quietly.
He and Mantis headed back over to the sidelines as Shifu announced, "Monkey, Viper, and Crane, you're next. You're going to have to do a three-way sparring since Tigress will not be able to join us for a while."
The three headed into the center and awaited the command to spar.
"Begin."
Monkey grabbed Crane's leg with his tail and pulled him backwards, resulting with the avion flying across the training hall and hitting his head hard on the side of the Jade Tortoise of Wisdom. Viper and Monkey then engaged in rough sparring, Viper throwing Monkey into the side of the wall and Monkey coming back and managing to pin her to the ground. Crane, having recovered from his temprary defeat, flew back over and re-engaged Monkey in combat, the two dueling for a while until Viper managed to whip them into the Gauntlet of Wooden Warriors, sending them flying into the wall and leaving them helpless.
"Are you okay, Crane?" Viper asked immediately. "I forgot about your wing. I'm sorry."
"I'm fine," Crane assured her."It's holding up alright."
"I'm glad to hear that much at least," Shifu commented from the side. To the serpent master, he added, "Excellent job, Viper. I think it's safe to say that you triumphed on this round."
The three masters bowed their heads and returned to the side.
"Now, I want the five of you to go through this course until lunch time. I want you to push yourselves as much as possible, but if you feel an old injury coming back to bother you, take a break. I don't want to inflict any severe training on anyone until I'm positive that every last one of you have recovered from our battle with Shen."
"Thank you, Master Shifu," the students told him.
"Your welcome. Now lets begin the course."
After a few hours of steady course-running, the masters retired to the kitchen where they ate lunch. Po carried Tigress' food to her room where they talked for a few minutes about how training went. When Tigress had finished, Po took her tray back to the kitchen, leaving the master to entertain herself again. The Dragon Warrior then headed to the training hall with the other four warriors and awaited Master Shifu's instructions. After a few minutes, Shifu showed up in the training hall.
"My apologies for being late," he said, walking over to them. "I was checking the borders in order to make sure that there were going to be no surprise attacks."
The old master cleared his throat and said, "Now, we're going to move on to meditation. Everyone please get into position and begin."
The students did as they were told, sitting down and folding their legs together and beginning to meditate. Shifu entered the center of their circle, observing each of his students so as to see if there was room for improvement. Po, who was sitting with his back towards the wall, took deep breaths in and out and meditated. As he had achieved inner peace a mere few days ago, he did his meditation perfectly fine. At least he did until his mind flickered and sent an image of Lord Shen's cannon firing through his mind. The Dragon Warrior let out a cry of surprise, glancing worriedly around the room so as to make sure that he wasn't actually about to be hit with a cannonball. The other masters, scared briefly by his cry, jumped a few feet in the air before trying to calm down and resume their meditation.
"Sorry," Po apologized. "My brain took me back to Shen's cannon again."
"That's alright, Po" Shifu assured him. "I think we've all been having issues with it."
"I'll say," Crane muttered.
"The vividness of those memories will pass with time," Shifu assured everyone. "For now, we must all bear through them the best that we possibly can."
The masters nodded and started to go back to meditating. About ten minutes later, Mantis leaped towards the candle in the middle of the floor, Shifu stopping him from putting it out.
"It's a can...dle," Mantis protested, realizing that it wasn't the cannon about to go off. He cleared his throat. "Sorry," he apologized.
Shifu sighed. "It's fine," he told him. "Lets just try again."
The students went back to their meditation, Shifu continually telling them to find inner peace. (Even though Po already found his). Everyone slowly started to get into the groove, doing perfectly fine with their meditation. Shifu sensed that everyone was relaxing and beginning to focus, and start to proceed to the next phase of meditation. However, as he turned around to address everyone, he got a glimpse of the wolves surrounding the boat during the battle and froze dead in his tracks. Sensing that he wasn't involved in their meditating, the students opened their eyes and saw Shifu staring blankly at them.
"Master Shifu?" Viper said worridly.
The red panda snapped to attention. "I'm sorry!" he apologized. "I got sidetracked." He cleared his throat and said, "Lets...lets take a quick break and then come back to warm-up with our weapons."
The students bowed and left the training hall to grab some tea and a quick snack.
The masters practiced with the weapons for the remainder of the day, a few of them having a few more episodes of their memories of their battle with Shen. It distracted them a little bit from their training, but for the most part, they were fine getting back into the swing of things. At the end of the day, the masters returned to the kitchen where Po began to whip up a hot bowl of noodle soup and served it to his friends. He then took a bowl and headed out of the kitchen and over to the barracks in order to give Tigress her dinner. Po went into the master's room, finding her busy making oragami cranes.
"Hey, Ti," Po called over. "How'd you learn to make those."
"Yijiro taught me when he was here last year," Tigress answered. "I may not be the best at making cubes or drawing or whatnot, but oragami I'm not too bad at."
"I thought you said you'd never make oragami again," Po reminded her.
"After the battle we just went through," Tigress answered. "Holding onto that incident doesn't seem worth it."
About a year and a half after Po became the Dragon Warrior, Master Shifu asked a samurai from Japan to assist them in catching a mysterious foe known as Kira. The samurai, Master Yijiro, immediately caught Tigress' eye and vice versa, making Po slightly jealous as he happened to like Tigress. However, the feeling eventually subsided and Tigress and Yijiro began to correspond back and forth as Tigress was needed in China and Yijiro was needed in Japan. They dated for about a year until Yijiro invited Tigress to Japan in order to introduce her to his homeland. She was supposed to be gone for six months, two months prior to the masters recieving word about Lord Shen. However, the master returned after a month and a half instead because she said that Yijiro had unintentionally insulted her and refused to apologize. After calming down, she explained that during a trip to one of the local orphanages, Yijiro had told her that he felt bad for the children there as he believed that children with no parents grow up to have lonely and dismal futures ahead of them. Tigress, who was an orphan herself, had gotten upset and told him what it was really like for orphan as she had been one herself. Yijiro said that she was a rare exception as she had been pitied by Shifu and under his good guidance, learned how to be a one of a kind kung fu master. The two then fought about the matter and split, Tigress heading home early since she couldn't stand being in Japan with him for any longer than she had to.
"I know I've said this before, but...I'm sorry he was acting like a jerk."
"It's alright. I guess I was just too upset since I thought he'd be more honorable than that."
"Well, Yijiro obviously doesn't know how well orphans can actually turn out despite bad beginnings. I mean, you turned out awesome even though you started out in the orphanage."
Tigress smiled at him. "You don't think I'm a 'botttom-of-the-barrel crumb child' who was pitied by Shifu?" she asked.
"Of course not," Po answered. " I see you the same way that everyone else sees you- a loyal kung fu master who can kick anyone's butt and who was taken in by Shifu because he wanted to, not because you were pitiful."
"Thanks," Tigress said.
"No problem," Po replied.
He gave the master her dinner, telling her that he'd be back later. Tigress nodded and started to eat her soup, putting the oragami cranes on her nightstand so that she could eat. After about an hour and a half went by, Po came back into the room to find Tigress sound asleep with the soup bowl on the floor, surrounded by the cranes. He smiled and tucked Tigress in, then picking up the food tray and blowing out her lantern.
"Good night, Tigress," he said to the sleeping master. With that, he ducked quietly out the door and let her catch up on a goodnight's sleep.
