Chapter 3: The Breakup - October 1997
The rain was falling on this cold autumn night. Kate shivered and wrapped her windbreaker tighter around her body, breathing in its scent. It was Leo's, and too baggy on her by far, but it felt almost as good as having his arms around her--almost as good as the real thing.
She reached into one of the pockets and found a pack of Marlboros. They were her favourites, not Leo's, and the thought of him buying cigarettes for her and knowing her favourite brand made her smile. Kate pulled one out and lit it up with the lighter she had in the pocket of her jeans, watching over the ship railing as the sun sank over the clouded sky, and dissolve into the ocean in a burst of orange flames.
"What is a pretty girl like you doing out here all alone on a dark and stormy night?" a voice came from behind her. It was Leo's voice.
She laughed hoarsely, taking a drag and watching smoke blow out in billowing clouds over the stern of the ship. "Is that all I am to you, Leo? A pretty face?"
"No." His voice was earnest, vulnerability and hurt mingling in his expression at her remark. "You're... you're that and everything else, everything real, everything that counts."
His blue eyes seemed to glow in the dark, through the rain. She wanted him to wrap his arms around her, not just his jacket.
"Thank you." Her shivers weren't just from the cold now, but from the things he was saying, things she could only dream of being true. She took another drag of the cig, coughing a little. "Leo, it's rather cold tonight, isn't it?"
"Especially since I seem to have misplaced my jacket," he replied, a glint of humour coming into those lovely, arresting eyes. Easily, his arm snaked around her only for a moment to grab her cigarette from her and take a drag from it. She lost her breath and all control of her body, wanting to sink back into the sudden, fleeting warmth. "Do you know where it is, Miss Winslet?"
"I-I don't." All she could see was his mouth, her pink lipstick staining the white cigarette that he held to his lips. It brought back hurtful memories, ones she couldn't stop from crashing over her as the ocean did the waves. "I have no idea. Maybe you should go look for it."
A tear slid down her cheek. She couldn't be out here flirting with Leo like nothing had changed. Not after what she had seen him do!
"That's okay. I think I've found it." His boyish grin was back as he slid the jacket from her body. She let him, feeling numb and heavy, as if her limbs had turned to cement. How could he behave as if he hadn't wounded her immeasurably? "Kate?"
She touched a hand to her mouth, where he'd kissed her last night when they had been filming between laughing their heads off. Then her fingers slid upwards to brush away the mixture of tears and rainwater that had collected on her cheeks. "Yes, Leonardo?"
"Hey, hey. What's wrong?" He slid his arms into the sleeves of the jacket before pulling them right around her. It felt as good as she remembered, which didn't seem fair. It should feel worse to be held by him, by a... a traitor. A liar. A cheater.
"You kissed her." The words fell from her lips without warning, without reasoning, without measuring and weighing them beforehand first. As an actress, Kate always tried to pick her words carefully, to ensure that they conveyed exactly what she wanted them to convey for the character, the scene, the shot. Not this time. Not with Leo. Leo made her want to be herself. When she was with him, no part of her was calculated or contrived. And maybe that was the problem.
She had given all of herself to him and expected him to do the same. But he hadn't.
"Who? Kate, what are you talking about?" His acting skills really were that good.
She shook her head, her whole body trembling now with sobs. "The contract!"
The two words hit him like a blow and he staggered back, away from her. "Kate, she means nothing to me."
"That's even worse!" she shouted. "That's even worse. You're really going to tell me that you can kiss a girl, hold her hand, and act like you're in a relationship with her, while feeling nothing for her. Because that means... that means..."
That means you feel nothing for me. Because we're just acting too...
"Katie, please..." he reached for her.
She sidestepped him, rubbing her eyes. "I have to go, Leo. Don't follow me."
