Chapter 1: The Holiday - December 2018

Camilla Morrone, Leo's GF, Is Now His Fiancée? The People magazine headline blared at Kate, its bold font drawing her eye and exacerbating her already painful migraine. She shoved the magazine into the trash can and closed the lid with a clang, not caring that magazines belonged in the recycling and that Kate Winslet was a law-abiding citizen.

Maybe he was just acting, another one of his contracts. Maybe it was just lust—Camila was half his age, for Christ's sake! But either way, she couldn't decide which one was worse. Or why the hell she cared.

Leo was nothing to her now, after all.

She had a husband. Three beautiful children. A successful acting career. But what she didn't have... was love. Oh sure, she had the love of her children, and her family, but if Kate was being honest with herself, she and Ned hadn't been in love for a long time. Maybe they had never even been in love. But that didn't matter, did it?

After all, love wasn't what mattered in marriage. Compatibility and security, someone to grow old with even if they annoyed the crap out of you half the time and the other half you only tolerated them—the known was better than the unknown. Far, far better than the unknown thoughts of being in a real relationship, not just an on-screen one, with a certain blond actor... Kate swallowed painfully and dusted her hands off as though ridding herself of Leonardo DiCaprio once and for all.

Though she always found herself running back to him as though no time had passed. Groaning, she decided that what she needed was a nice change of scenery. Perhaps she would go... go on a vacation! A nice escape from Reading and the English countryside, would be just the thing to invigorate their marriage that seemed to be falling to pieces, to tie their family together again. But where to go...?

Her eye landed on a travel magazine: white sands and beautiful beaches, blue waters and gorgeous, red terracotta-topped roofs. Panama. Yes. There. A perfect holiday, away from the stresses and troubles of life. Now, if only she could convince Ned that a break from mundane, domestic routines was necessary.  Her temples began to pound as she thought of how he would react: his heavy sigh, his passive-aggressive response, his argument that she was too flighty and spontaneous, that the children needed more stability (since she already had two divorces under her belt) as though she deliberately made her children suffer by marrying men with whom things didn't work out. As though she were some sort of flaky schoolgirl who ran off at the first sign of suffering! No, if anything he was the one...

She shook her head and paced the living room for a few moments before beginning to tidy up. Joe and Bear would need to be picked up from school, while Mia would take the bus home or have one of her schoolmates drive her. Kate nodded to herself as she dusted under the magazines on the coffee table, then stacked them neatly. Yes. This was a good idea. The Christmas hols were nearly upon them, anyways.

What better time was there for a vacation?

As it turned out, her husband definitely disagreed with her opinions on timing and holidays.

"I'm sorry, Kate, but we don't all have artistic jobs that we can pack up from anytime we want to." He steepled his fingers under his chin while Bear played in his playpen a few feet away.

She hated the way he denigrated her career, the insouciant affectation he used to speak of acting. As though it were some hobby, as though she hadn't won awards and dedicated a good part of her life to. As though acting commitments weren't major, as though she hadn't twice nearly drowned and died of hypothermia for her career.

"I understand, Ned, but I just think a would be good for all of us. To get away from the stresses of life and just be together as a family somewhere exotic, you know?" She was begging him. Begging. Kate Winslet did not beg, so why did he reduce her to doing so? Why did she bother asking his permission?

"I hear and understand what you're saying. I really do, Kate." He scrolled through his phone as he said the words, making her release an unladylike snort. "But I cannot just pack up and leave my major work commitments. We have an enormous project now that could take us global at the office."

She sighed. This was what she got for marrying a businessman, a man who thought in numbers and not words, a man concerned profit margins and not poetic musings. Someone had to be practical, according to him—and that someone was apparently Ned. Ned Rocknroll. At first, he had thought it part of his hip and carefree persona to marry an actress. Now she was just another person whom he tried to shape to his liking.

"I'm going to Panama with the children, Ned. That's with or without you. Please, dear husband... Make your decision."
