Chapter- 5 Ruler of a Rainbow
"I am what!"
Did Deathbringer hear right?
HE was in charge of TWO tribes!
There had to be a mistake somewhere!
"Like I said, you are the new ruler for now until Queen Glory recovers," Shadowclaw responded. Clearly not worried at all.
"But how? I'm only her...bodyguard," Deathbringer asked.
"Yes, but Queen Glory clearly stated in her council meeting that if anything were to happen to her, her bodyguard was to take charge until they found a new queen."
Deathbringer was simply astonished.
Glory trusted him enough to make him a successor if she died. Which Deathbringer had sworn to her that it wouldn't happen soon, it would happen when she was old and asleep, and Deathbringer knew he would find a way to follow her right after.
"Wh-what am I supposed to do now?"
"Well, we need to address the tribes that Queen Glory has been injured and that you are in charge for now," Shadowclaw said in a very smart tone. Deathbringer nodded, chaos would erupt soon if the tribes depended on rumors for information.
"Alright, but what about the ice?"
"I'll get it," said what appeared to be a branch in a nearby tree.
Deathbringer knew that voice, it wasn't a branch it was Jambu!
"Huh?" Shadowclaw was clearly confused now. He looked around and found nothing.
"It's Jambu, Glory's brother," explained Deathbringer.
"I've been there before and I know how to camouflage into a very shiny Icewing. And, I would do anything for my little sister,"said Jambu who had climbed down by hanging upside down and then putting his front talons on the platform which his body then followed.
Jambu changed his scales to look like an Icewing, which if you looked closer, you could tell it was missing some spikes and the rigid claws they were famous for. Not to mention their whip thin tails. It could still pass anyway if other dragons didn't put much attention into it.
"Alright then, Deathbringer, I don't think there is much going on so you can go visit our queen if you wish," said Shadowclaw.
"I'll go now, wait do you need ice or snow?" Asked the Rainwing prince who had already shifted his scales to a rosy pink.
"If you can, try to bring both, it would really help make the healing much quicker," replied the Nightwing healer. They agreed on a plan and the Rainwing took a banana leaf to hold the ice and snow he would gather.Jambu left in the direction of the tunnel that led to SandWing kingdom, while Shadowclaw went back to the hut to attend Glory.
Deathbringer wanted to go see her desperately, but something was holding him back.
What happened?
What had caused Glory so much harm?
Who would want to see Glory like that?
Probably a grumpy Nightwing,
he thought.
Still, at times like these...
He smoothly flew back to the royal pavilion as fast as he could. As Deathbringer neared he realized there was already someone there. It was Destiny. Last time he had seen her, she was flying as close to him as she could when he was carrying Glory to the healer's hut. After that, he didn't remember seeing her anywhere near the hut.
What does she want now?
He landed softy to avoid alerting her of his presence. He peered through a hole on the side of the pavilion to get a better view and watched Destiny carefully. She was frowning at a crown.
Wait, Glory had a crown?
As far as he knew, Glory didn't really live like the other queens who often used crowns and jewels to show off how important they were. She liked to keep things simple and humble.
Maybe she changed?
He accidentally stepped on a twig which cracked way too loudly for its size.
Oops
Destinyseeker snapped her head up in response and looked around.
"Who's there? Come out unless you want a slow and painful death, I mean it!"
"It's just me Destiny, nothing to worry about," replied Deathbringer who had relaxed a little by now
Deathbringer walked into the pavilion in a very cautious way. He had a couple of questions for his "friend"...
"What are you doing here and why?" Deathbringer didn't have to be careful about his questions, there was guilt written all over Destiny's face.
"I-umm, I was looking for clues of course!"
Deathbringer raised an eyebrow, since when had she turned into the detective dragon?
"I just wanted to know what went wr- I mean what happened." She laughed nervously.
He guessed she had something to do with Glory's incident, after all, to become Pyrrhia's greatest assassin he had to learn dragon behavior along the way. It was simply too obvious and too easy.
"Yeah, and I have prophecy powers," retorted Deathbringer who was getting annoyed and frustrated by now.
"I'm serious! I was looking around and I found this, last time I checked Queen Glory never wore a crown. Even when Darkstalker came to pay a visit."
Darkstalker hadn't paid a visit!
He had come to the forest to kill Glory and take the throne for himself!
And, was it just him or did she put an emphasis on the word queen?
He made a mental note to watch out for her.
"So, saying that you were looking for clues, why do you think a crown of all things could have burned Glory?"
"I think it's enchanted, it was glowing when I came in. Ooh look it's doing it again!"
Just like she said, the crown was glowing.
Deathbringer broke a branch from a tree and went over to it and tentatively touched it with the branch. At once, the piece of wood went up in flames and turned to ashes not a second later. Deathbringer had instantly dropped the branch before it had burned so he hadn't suffered any damages.
"Leave, I'll take care of it," he said with steel in his voice.
"Be careful Death, if it hurts you too, you know I couldn't live without you," she said before brushing her wing against his and walking out of the pavilion. Destinyseeker took off and flew towards moons know where while leaving Deathbringer alone with the mysterious crown. He rolled his eyes, sometimes she could just be too dramatic for his liking. But he knew he said stuff like that to Glory all the time.
He left the crown in the stand it was on, now realizing that if it hurt Glory badly, it would surely do the same thing to him.
Now what do I do?
The other dragonets! They had to know, if no one told Tsunami, he knew the Seawing would tear him apart for not taking care of Glory properly. That's when it hit him, if he hadn't left Glory alone, none of this would have happened.
I'm just as bad as Darkstalker!
No, all this was just a mistake he would never repeat again as long he lived. If Glory survived, he would make sure he never left her side again.
"Banana!," he called out to the forest with as much command as he could put into his voice. If he was going to be a king for now, he had to act like it in order to earn respect. He knew Glory hadn't earned the Rainwings' trust that easy.
"Yes, King Deathbringer?" Replied a Rainwing who was one of Glory's most trusted messengers. Deathbringer knew he wasn't far, RainWings and their camouflage skills were starting to get familiar to the Nightwing. Not to mention their fast methods of gossip. He shuddered at the word king.
"Don't call me king again I don't think it's appropriate, lord will be fine for now."
A flash of purple crossed his scales but then quickly disappeared and were replaced with the usual yellow they had been earlier.
"Yes, Lord Deathbringer?"
"Go to Jade Mountain Academy and tell the Dragonets of Destiny that Queen Glory is hurt and to come here as soon as possible."
"Anything else?"
"No, you can leave now thank you."
He bowed, not as low as when Glory was here though, and left in less than a second.
Now what?
He looked around the pavilion, noticing a wooden desk with drawers and half written scrolls all over it. Deathbringer walked casually towards it, figuring out that he could get started on writing messages for the other tribes. He looked around for a clean scroll, and was about to call out for one when he felt something under the desk. A bump that felt out of place. With a jolt, he realized it was another drawer. A secret drawer.
He opened it carefully in case something should jump out of it. There were six scrolls in it, all stacked neatly together, and written on each of them...was a name for a certain dragon.
