Chapter-29 Darker Shades
Vibrance had agreed without hesitation. Vigilant didn't want to see her unharmed so he agreed as well.
Glory's idea hadn't been too bad after all, at least not as bad as the last one.
Deathbringer still thought the idea of being live bait to save a whole tribe was ridiculous. But that was his Glory, she wasn't scared of doing the right thing and she cared for everyone.
Since the royal hut was still under repair, the four friends sat in Vibrance's hut. It was located in the center of the RainWing village, so they didn't have to worry about someone coming in and attacking them.
The plan was being discussed quietly, as three camouflaged guards sat outside.
"Can we go over this again? I want to understand everything, and I usually need to hear things twice for it to stick in my head," Vibrance commented.
Glory nodded and repeated what they had said earlier.
"From what Deathbringer said, the ambush is supposed happen when I'm having sun time. I usually sleep after everyone else, so technically it would be a good plan if we hadn't discovered it first," the queen said and she motioned for Deathbringer to continue the plan.
"Before they can even touch Glory, we will make sure we spot them and attack them first. I've got Darkstalker and Destinyseeker, you two will each get one of the NightWings that are also influenced by Darkstalker. Glory will escape while we distract them and-" he was interrupted by Glory.
"What?!" She shrieked, "I'm not going to run away! I'm going to fight. Just because I got hurt once doesn't mean I'll get hurt again!"
Deathbringer snorted and said, "Yes, it does. It'll be worse if you stay and die. The rainforest will be under worse than it was when I was in command."
The queen's scales turned red. "Whatever, I'm going to fight and you can't stop me. New plan, Deathbringer will take Darkstalker and I'll take Destinyseeker. There, happy?"
Vibrance and Vigilant slowly backed up behind Glory as Deathbringer growled.
"You are not going to fight Destinyseeker. She's trained just like I was, I won't let you get hurt by her ever again. Not if I can help it. And if I have to tie you up to a tree I will."
Glory simply rolled her eyes and said, "Trained or not, she hurt both of us. And I'll do whatever it takes to protect my rainforest, my subjects, and my friends. So yes, I will fight. The end."
She stared at him defiantly while he looked at her menacingly.
"You. Are. Not. Taking. Part. Of. This."
The queen frowned. "Yes. I. Am!"
Exasperated, Deathbringer huffed and looked away from her. This was a life or death situation. He couldn't just let her fight a trained dragon on her own, he would be busy with his own opponent. There we would be no chance to help her if she needed it.
The decision was tearing him into two sides.
Half of him wanted to protect Glory and keep her as far away from harm as he could. The last time Glory got hurt had been his fault. He didn't want the same thing to happen twice.
But his other half wanted to listen to her. She had a say in this, she was the queen and should be able to do what she wanted. Another reason this side was winning, was because Deathbringer couldn't take Darkstalker and Destinyseeker alone. There was no possible way.
He had to choose.
Let Glory fight, and possibly die. Or keep her safe, away from any danger, but at the same time keeping her unhappy.
The latter option of course seemed to be the safest. But Deathbringer had a feeling his queen wouldn't be happy with it. And knowing Glory, she would find a way to break free from any bonds he put on her.
He sighed heavily and turned to face Glory. Her scales were still a bright scarlet red, and two faces peeled out from behind her.
"Fine, you can fight. But you have to promise you will stay safe at any costs. No matter what."
Deathbringer put a small pleading glint to his eyes to make Glory feel guilty. It was small enough that their friends didn't see it.
His pride grew as he caught Glory's tiny sharp intake of breath. It had worked.
The queen snorted and said, "Very well, I promise to stay safe, as long as you promise you won't get killed."
Deathbringer smirked, "Easier done than said."
They shook talons and the deal was sealed.
Vibrance and Vigilant cautiously came back to the conversation and the plan continued.
The pairs were made, and the process of what would happen was reviewed over once, and then twice.
Everything will come out alright, I just know it, Deathbringer thought.
