Chapter-26 Red Nights
A/N: I just realized that I haven't done many chapters with Deathbringer's point of view so I hope this makes up for it.
It had been a week since Startoucher's trial. Glory had sentenced her to banishment of the rainforest with the warning that if she ever came back she would be executed.
Deathbringer was still processing in his mind if that had been an enough punishment. In the end, he concluded that it was. After all, he didn't think she would survive that long by herself with no known dragons from the world outside of the rainforest.
The past seven days had gone by without disturbance. In fact, he had even gone out on a date with Glory in a day when he had felt extremely brave.
They had flown to a large tree that had an abandoned hut and had a picnic. Nothing too fancy.
The hunt for Darkstalker had still gone on but not quite as rushed due to the fact that there had been no appearances or issues.
Deathbringer still tried to lead as many as he could, but Glory kept insisting he stay by her side. He preferred her company of course, but he thought it would be better if she was secured permanently than having to have someone watch her all the time.
He didn't doubt her fighting skills, but this was an animus they had on the loose.
But Deathbringer should have seen it coming. Good things don't last without a price.
Glory had been sleeping during sun time when the messenger had approached Deathbringer.
~~~
The trained NightWing assasin caught the sound of hurried flapping wings coming towards his way. They sounded heavy, so they couldn't be the wings of an animus dragonet.
He relaxed as he saw it was a NightWing messenger. Several of them had come over at this time of day the last couple of days reporting on small findings.
But worry grew in Deathbringer's face as he saw the expression the other dragon wore. He stood up and scooted closer to Glory out of habit.
The messenger landed lightly on the platform seeing their queen asleep.
He whispered so quietly Deathbringer could barely hear.
"Deathbringer, I don't have good news. Someone left a note for you and they used red ink to write it. It is best if you come over by yourself to check it out."
The assasin blinked in shock but almost immediately regained his senses.
He whispered back, "Understood. Where did they leave the note?"
"In the royal hut. Prince Jambu walked in when he found it and he told us to get you as soon as possible."
Deathbringer sighed and went to wake up Glory. The messenger waited patiently by the side of the platform.
He shook her shoulder gently. She woke up immediately with a yawn and was about to give Deathbringer a kiss when she realized that they had company.
"Oh, um. Good afternoon Shadowseeker. What brings you here?"
The messenger looked embarrassed of the brief scene of affection but quickly answered the queen.
"I was actually here to get Deathbringer. I'm sorry to have bothered you," he said and then bowed low.
Glory shook her head and let him stand up. "No worries there, I was already going to wake up anyways."
Deathbringer could see that Glory's tone was putting the messenger at ease. He had noticed him being skittish when he arrived.
He thought about what to do. He couldn't leave Glory alone, that was for sure. But there was something telling him that the note was only meant for him. And he had a vague feeling of who it was from. There was only another dragon he trusted with Glory's safety
"Glory, I need to see this for myself so I'll go drop you off with Vigilant and check the situation for myself. Can you promise me that you'll stay safe?"
Glory frowned in confusion. It disturbed her to not know what was going on. She reluctantly agreed anyways.
"Okay, but be quick please."
Deathbringer nodded and faced Shadowseeker.
"I'll be there in a few moments."
Shadowseeker flew off in the direction of the royal hut while the queen and assasin went towards the center of the RainWing village.
They spotted Vigilant in line with Vibrance for the pile of fruit that was made at the disposal of every dragon who lived there. The dragons in charge of collecting fruit would drop the food off in a platform on the rainforest floor. Then every day, dragons were allowed to get four pieces of fruit in the morning and four in the afternoon. It was a system that worked well for everyone.
They landed next to their friends and Deathbringer led Vigilant off the line to talk to him.
"I need you to guard Glory for about an hour. Can you do that for me?"
Vigilant looked at him perplexed.
"Yeah, anytime. You know I'm here whenever you need it. Does she know I'm going to guard her or is this secret?"
Deathbringer shook his head.
"She knows. Don't worry about that. Just keep her safe for me."
"Got it, you can count on me. We'll be here when you come back."
"Thank you Vigilant."
"Anytime Deathbringer."
They clapped each other on the shoulders and Deathbringer flew off to the royal hut.
He saw Shadowseeker waiting for him by the entrance. He opened his wings to glide down and landed with the grace of the assasin he was.
Or used to be, he wasn't sure anymore.
Shadowseeker greeted him in a friendly manner and led him to the west wall.
Deathbringer gasped as he saw the 'note' left behind for him.
The message was written with the blood of someone. The body wasn't in sight, so he couldn't tell who it was from.
But the message was clear.
Deathbringer, you will never see your dragonet. I promise you that. I left with the egg, but will come back shortly. Just wait. Love-Destinyseeker
Without meaning to, Deathbringer let out a roar the shook the hut.
The egg didn't really matter to him much anymore. It had been a pretext made up by Destinyseeker and Darkstalker to keep him away from Glory.
What made him angry was the thought the Destinyseeker would murder someone to just write a note. It was clear it had to be a murder. No one survived that much blood loss. Destiny wasn't the dragon he used to know.
He paced around the hut, thinking what he would do now.
There was no way he could chase her down now, she would be too far away. He worried for the poor soul who had been her victim. The body wouldn't be far away. They had to go look for it and give that someone a proper burial.
How in Pyrrhia were they going to take the blood off the wall though?
"Shadowseeker, do we have anything to remove the message?"
The messenger shook his head.
"I'm afraid it will stay there permanently. Our best bet would be to take the whole thing down."
Deathbringer sighed. Glory should never see this, she would demand for more answers and want to go chase Destinyseeker. He knew she would.
They were finally at peace, he didn't want to take that away from her now.
"Very well, take this thing down and only let your most trusted friends do it. I don't want a word of this to spread. If they ask you questions give them this."
Deathbringer took several gold coins from the pouch of his neck and gave them to Shadowseeker.
Shadowseeker nodded and took off to find his friends.
Deathbringer stared at the message once more before leaving as well.
He didn't like what was happening. Why would their enemies strike now? They were planning something.
Something dangerous, and Deathbringer didn't like where it was heading to.
My friends, my readers, my followers, my family. I have bittersweet news for you.
I'm afraid this story is slowly coming to an end.
As you have read, the problems are ascending and the climax is almost here.
So, maybe this story will have about 30 chapters.
But I have good news too.
Remember how Jambu, Sunny, and Deathbringer never read their letters? Well, after an epilogue I will write some bonus chapters with them. I'm planning on the letters and I had something else in mind but I forgot. Don't worry. The idea should come back soon. Oooh. There it is. Sorry, I have really bad memory.
Anyhow, if you have any ideas I will try to take them in mind.
Please vote and comment! It really helps me improve and all that.
Edit: The answer to the question of what starts with F and ends with UCK. It is
