Chapter-22 When Darkness Falls
A/N warning: profanity language ahead
Deathbringer was flying furiously to the hatchery. He had to get there in time, he just had to.
If anything went wrong, it would be his fault. Again.
There was some fog this night, making it seem creepier than usual.
He got to the hatchery somewhat early. The moons were probably five minutes away from being in their highest point in the sky.
The NightWing settled himself on a large tree branch nearby his target. He let his scales blend in naturally into the shadows, and he kept his breathing quiet and even.
Deathbringer repeated in his head all the things he could remember about being an assasin.
Speed is the key.
No regrets.
No doubts.
Keep your head in the job.
Do it quietly and stealthily.
Follow your instincts.
Don't fail.
His talon went subconsciously to his chest, and he touched his weapon pouch.
He couldn't fail, he just couldn't.
But a horrible thought occurred to him then, if he succeeded, what would happen to Glory?
Would Darkstalker stay in her head forever?
Would she live with him for the rest of her life?
No, no don't think like that.
It was not the moment to think like that.
Deathbringer's ears picked up a sound not too far away.
Talons landing on the ground.
The assasin jumped from branch to branch like a preying cat. All the while eyeing a silhouette who looked much like Glory that was walking towards an oval shape.
The hatchery loomed ahead, its egg shape taking a large space of the forest, and of Deathbringer's mind.
Glory's silhouette lingered in the entrance, and was about to take a step inside when Deathbringer jumped.
He did his best to only put half his weight into the tackle.
Glory stumbled back, but did not fall.
She opened her mouth and spoke in a voice that wasn't her own. It was deep and definitely male, and it send shivers down Deathbringer's spine.
"Silly assasin. You think you can defeat me? Why, how stupid dragons have grown over the years."
Deathbringer snarled and lunged at Glory's body, but barely dodged a spray of her venom.
Glory's scales went into camouflage mode, and the night fog around him didn't help spot her.
Deathbringer's fury grew, and he let everything out.
"You're such a coward Darkstalker! Hiding inside the head of an innocent dragon? Who in their right lizard-brain-sized mind does that? Oh, right. Dragons made up of camel spit like you who are too lazy to do the work themselves."
Deathbringer smirked as he heard a roar in front of him.
He ducked as his opponent tried jump on him. As Glory sailed over, he used his hind legs to kick her stomach and sent her flying farther than she had intended. He internally flinched. She may not be the real Glory, but she was still inside.
Her body hit a tree trunk with a sickening thud. Glory rolled over and she shakily stood up. But she came back to the ground quickly.
Deathbringer pulled out his dart-shooter and loaded it up. It could only fit two at a time, so he had to aim carefully.
As the assasin was about to shoot straight at her neck, Glory whispered something.
She looked at him with eyes full of fear.
His heart clenched and his thoughts were spinning all over the place.
Did she break through?
Is he gone?
Is she okay?
Deathbringer walked over to her while still aiming the dart-shooter.
Glory shivered and tried to stand up, but failed badly at it.
He was only two feet away when he decided it was okay to lower his weapon.
Just as had put it back in the pouch, she lunged at him with her fangs open.
Deathbringer tried to duck in time, but he hadn't been expecting it and she had been too fast.
The tiniest of venom drop landed on his right shoulder, sending him screaming and swearing silently.
He couldn't risk waking anyone up, it was too risky. Glory's friends had left long ago back to Jade Mountain, but there were too many curious RainWings.
Deathbringer turned to Glory, who was already in a defense position. He took the already loaded shooter out and aimed.
Just as the dart had fired, the NightWing had jumped and landed on the queen's body. The red dart passed only a feather's width away from Glory's ear.
Glory growled and tried to break free from his grasp, but Deathbringer was stronger.
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. As Deathbringer looked into Glory's beautiful emerald eyes, he saw that she was struggling to come back. But he also saw the darkness that engulfed her, and it was too awful to watch.
It had been a big mistake for Deathbringer to look into her mesmerizing eyes, for that's when Darkstalker took over.
Glory pushed Deathbringer off her and used the moment to speed into the hatchery. After all, they had only been a few feet away.
That's when Deathbringer realized that the pouch around his neck was gone.
The assasin followed suit and as he entered the hatchery, his nightmares became a reality.
Glory was there.
And her right talon held Razor above her left talon. A black egg just below it.
"NO!"
Deathbringer lunged and tackled Glory once more, but his efforts to do everything right went down hill as the sharp blade made contact with the queen's scales.
And then, everything went into slow motion.
A droplet of crimson blood slowly sailed in the air, and touched the shell of an egg.
As Deathbringer looked at the body below him, he saw that Glory was unconscious. Her scales were a pale white and her eyes were closed.
The NightWing looked over at the innocent egg, and what he saw made his insides turn over.
The only comfort he took was that the blood had missed its intended target.
It hadn't landed on a NightWing egg, but on a RainWing one.
The egg exploded in a black light, and a tiny dragonet with black eyes stood up. His evil eyes taking in his surroundings with a malicious look. His scales a dark grey with black in diamond shapes.
Deathbringer growled and put himself over Glory, not wanting to fail at her protection ever again.
The mini Darkstalker only laughed and said, "You did well, assasin. But even you couldn't stop fate. I may be a stupid RainWing, but I won't let that stop me."
His voice was high pitched and dragonet like, but it sent shivers down Deathbringer's spine.
He watched as Darkstalker laughed again, and headed into the night. Only once calling behind his shoulder, "You haven't seen the last of me yet, Deathbringer."

I'm so sorry I haven't posted in a while.
Please forgive me!
But I had writers block and I tried to do my best in the battle scene. I'm not convinced on it myself, so I'm thinking that once I'm done with the book I may come back and edit it.
So what do you think? Was it good enough. Or should I have done something different. Please tell me so I can take it in mind if I edit this.
Also, thank you so much!
How the heck people? 2K!!!!
I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I love you all so much.
And I have some announcements!
I have a new book called... Ask A Dragon!
If you could check that out it would be amazing! Read the description and the first chapter on that one if you want to see how it works.
Basically, you comment a question and I plan an interview with the dragon you want to ask!
Our next guest is Kinkajou, so go over there and bombard her with questions!
And if you missed any characters, I can do more interviews.
Also, I should have a new book by the end of the day. And yes, it will be a Tag Book. So if you want to know more about me make sure to keep an eye out for that one.
Phew, I think that's it. Thank you again!!
Okie Dokie,
See ya later!
-Sofi
