Tom

The computer room is dark and musty. It smells rank and it makes my nose curl up on itself.

I don't bother with booting up any of the lights in the lab considering this is a covert operation and I wasn't about to get caught by anyone walking past. Especially not by Toby.

That arsehole could go die topside. He is always intent on making my hospital shift a living nightmare. He might be a couple years older than me and my supervising medic, but he always insisted on giving me the worst patients and then treating me like a slave.

I tap my foot nervously on the ground, a habit that Hamilton appears to be transferring over to me. It doesn't help that I've pressed the button five times and still nothing. Not even a little green light to tell me the modem is working.

"Come on!" I whisper, bouncing my leg up and down like a basketball. I glance over my shoulder and make sure no one is coming down the hall.

The computer lab is horrid for such an operation. There's a giant glass screen that looks in at the ancient computers. In total, there's ten computers made in 2015. That's well over a hundred years ago. They're slow and clunky and according to history, once connected to something called the Internet.

I would have liked to live in that time. Unrestricted access to everything you could ever want to know sounds wonderful.

I guess having something called Wikipedia and just about every science, art and significant literary piece downloaded onto the database of these chunky old things was going to do.

The whole lab is restricted access. I'm not supposed to be in here. I'm only a junior medic and I only ever get to use this lab if there's some important case I need to crack for my senior medic.

So, earlier today, I swiped my senior medic's card. Toby wasn't dumb either. Whilst his card unlocked the door for me, I'm afraid he's going to come looking for it or rat me out as a potential last witness.

Finally, it boots up.

"Pregnancy. Pregnancy. Ah."

How to perform an ultrasound.

"Ultrasound? We only ever use those machines for hearts or appendixes."

I click on the link anywhere and begin scanning it.

It tells me the parts of the machine and how to use it. It also tells me how to check the baby is growing alright, deformities to watch out for and how to tell how far along Beth is. It also mentions how to discover the gender but I didn't think Beth would be that far along.

There's suddenly a loud commotion at the door.

Toby is standing there with two guards looking at me and pointing.

Shucks!

Quickly, I close the tab but it spam opens a dozen more.

"Shuck, shuck, shuck!"

Eventually, I manage to close the tabs as Toby barges in.

"Where's my card you thief!"

I gulp. "Here."

I hold it up and he snatches it out of my hand.

"Why would a junior need to use a medic lab?"

"I had a difficult case in the medic hospital yesterday and I needed answers."

"Who"

"McGregor."

"Bullshit. The old fart has congestive heart failure. You knew that three days ago." He pushes past me and stares at the bright, but empty screen.

Opening the google tab he does some neat trick and suddenly we're both staring at the pregnancy page.

I gulp.

"Pregnancy? What the heck do you need this stuff for Hades?"

"Uhhhh."

"Well!?"

"I got curious."

"About how to perform an ultrasound?"

I gulp. "MmmHmmm."

"I call bullshit! Arrest him!"

"Wait! No!"

"No?"

"I can explain."

"My word you will! To the Council we go Hades."
