Chapter 8: Learning The Dance
Grim fidgeted with her hands as she impatiently waited on her Master. Obi-Wan had promised he would spar with her today. "Urgh, come on and hurry. I'm anxious to practice my lightsaber skills," the Padawan grumbled to nobody.
"You should also practice your patience," came Obi-Wan's voice from behind.
She jumped a little before turning around to see him. "Well we can work on that next," she replied. "I thought you said we'd spar today?"
"We will," he replied. "Are you ready?"
Grim smiled. "Sure am."
She ignited her lightsaber and he ignited his. The purple and blue blades came to life. Casting the Master and Padawan in their glows.
The two Jedi circled each other for a moment. Both waiting for the other to make the first move.
It was Grim and her impatience that went first.
She leaned forward and struck at Obi-Wan who easily blocked.
She jumped up and began to send multiple attacks at him at once, each one he blocked. "You're too aggressive in your attacks," he told her.
Grim stopped and stepped away.
Of course, attacking him in that way was foolish. She knew his moves. By doing that she was inviting a swift defeat by overexerting herself.
"Right. With your fighting style, to fight in that way is just asking to lose," she told him. "I should adjust my style to my opponent's."
"Be careful not to overestimate yourself," he told her. He went for an attack to which Grim moved out of the way and parried.
"I'm not. I'm just simply stating I have a better chance that way. After all I do have the advantage of knowing things many others do not," she said.
Grim attacked and Obi-Wan blocked. Their lightsabers engaged in a lock.
"Having knowledge and applying it are two very different things," he informed her.
"Of course," said Grim, jumping back. "Knowledge and wisdom are words many use interchangeably but are in truth different concepts," she agreed.
She struck at him and he slid back twirling his lightsaber.
Grim couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Do you always have to do that?"
"Do what?" asked Obi-Wan as the two circled each other again.
"The lightsaber spin, it's iconic," she replied. "Episode two, this show, episode three...I don't remember if you did it in episode one," she said. "Oh yeah, you do. It's like one of your signature moves. Besides the cloak drop and your whole pose, of course."
Obi-Wan chuckled. "I wouldn't say it's a signature move."
"Guess I'll keep count on how many times you do it then. When the war's over I'll tell you your total if it's less than ten you're right."
The Jedi Master smiled at his Padawan. "Very well then," he said.
Grim smiled back before attacking again.
Obi-Wan blocked and the two of them continued their spar.
Grim attempted to follow Obi-Wan copying his moves as they were now and as she had seen before.
As she did so she fell into a sort of dance.
Two more Jedi entered the room. Another Master and his Padawan. Anakin and Ahsoka. They watched as the other two sparred.
As Obi-Wan and Grim fought it was clear that both of them were very talented, even Grim who had only a year of training.
Although it was the more experienced Jedi who was winning.
Grim seemed to not notice this, however. "You forget Master, I know your moves," she told him. An air of confidence in her voice.
"It is you who forget, my young Padawan," said Obi-Wan as he turned around and disarmed Grim. "I have more experience. You cannot allow yourself to become overconfident. Just because you know many things doesn't always give you an advantage over your enemy," he told her. He handed Grim her lightsaber back. "Do not allow yourself to become overconfident because of what you know."
"Yes, Master. I understand," she replied as she took her lightsaber back.
"You did a great job Grim, you're learning fast. However being a Jedi is not just about how well you can use a lightsaber, you must learn to be patient and to be mindful of your emotions. You may find these skills to also be useful in combat if so comes the need, but it is not always about fighting," Obi-Wan told her. "I want you to practice being more mindful of your emotions before we spar again."
"Yes, Master, of course," she told him.
Anakin smiled and finally spoke up. "Still giving your Padawans the 'be mindful of your emotions and thoughts' lecture, I see."
That was when Obi-Wan and Grim noticed the other two Jedi in the room. Obi-Wan smiled at his former Padawan. "Hello Anakin," he greeted.
Grim gave Obi-Wan a slight side-eye. That was a missed opportunity to say hello there. She thought.
"Me and Snips were going to spar but we saw that you and Tiny beat us here and didn't want to interrupt," Anakin explained.
Grim sighed at Skywalker's nickname for her. "I'm not that short, Anakin. Even if I was Master Yoda says that size doesn't matter. I bet I could beat you just the same."
Anakin gave a cocky grin. "Oh really?"
"Yes really," said Grim. "You know what? How about we spar, me and you Skywalker."
Obi-Wan sighed, "Grim, we just talked about not being overconfident."
"Who said I was being overconfident?" asked Grim.
"The fact that you just challenged Skyguy to a spar over him calling you 'Tiny' says you're overconfident already," Ahsoka replied. Though she said this with a hint of amusement in her voice.
"Well we'll see if it's overconfidence or just the right amount of confidence," replied Grim, giving Ahsoka a wink.
Then she blinked and stared into space as she realized what she did. Her cheeks flushed red and she covered her face in embarrassment. "Please tell me I didn't just do that."
Ahsoka laughed a little, blushing slightly. "You did."
"Oh my gosh, I can't believe I did that Ash I'm so sorry-"
"Don't be sorry Grim, I thought it was cute." Ahsoka blinked. She blushed more.
Grim blinked. She blushed more. "You thought it was cute?"
Before Ahsoka could reply Anakin coughed a little. "You wanted to spar Tiny?"
Grim and Ahsoka both blushed more. They had forgotten their Masters were present to see that awkward and embarrassing interaction.
"Um, yeah, right. You're on Skywalker," Grim told him. She reactivated her lightsaber and got ready. Waiting for his move even before his lightsaber was out.
Obi-Wan walked over to Ahsoka to get out of the way of his two Padawans.
Anakin unclipped his lightsaber from his belt and ignited the blade.
Anakin quickly attacked but Grim who anticipated the move slid out of the way and caught his lightsaber with hers.
The two Jedi danced together.
Grim and Anakin changed constantly on who was offensive and who was defensive.
They danced around the sparring arena, both graceful.
"You're doing good, Tiny," Anakin said as he blocked another one of her attacks. For the last few moves Grim had decided to go on the offense.
Grim backed up and twirled her lightsaber, allowing Anakin to know wordlessly that she was going to the defense again. "Thanks Skywalker."
Anakin smiled and moved to strike.
Grim blocked the attack with a playful grin on her face.
The two Jedi danced together.
Anakin was winning but the Padawan was still confident she could turn things around.
While she blocked another of Anakin's attacks she thought about what brought about his defeat on Mustafar in Revenge Of The Sith.
That had been his overconfidence, he had overestimated his power, or perhaps underestimated Obi-Wan. Either way his overconfidence had gotten the better of him.
Obi-Wan was right Grim couldn't be so overconfident.
She knew Obi-Wan's moves but couldn't win against him. She had Anakin's moves even more so memorized thanks to all the times she had watched Revenge Of The Sith prior to appearing in the Star Wars universe.
Still she was losing against him.
Grim couldn't use what she knew from the screen as she used her lightsaber.
It didn't help her in this area, only her training could do that.
Focusing once more on the spar, Grim found herself applying Obi-Wan's lessons. She didn't allow herself to become overconfident again.
Now she had disarmed Anakin and held his lightsaber.
She deactivated both his and her own lightsabers and grinned at him. "I win," she told him, before handing the Knight his lightsaber back.
"So you do, Tiny," he replied. "I'm impressed."
"Thanks Skywalker, and don't call me Tiny." Although she said that Grim did let out a chuckle at the nickname.
She already knew it wasn't going away, not for a long time.
"You both did a very good job," said Obi-Wan with a smile.
"Thank you, Master," said Grim.
She went over to where Ahsoka was and leaned back against the wall, tired by her two spars with the older Jedi. Ahsoka smiled at her, "did Skyguy tire you out?"
"Combined with Master Kenobi, yeah," admitted Grim. "You know maybe the boys should spar and show us Padawans how it's done," she joked.
Anakin grinned at Grim's idea, having overheard her. "That sounds like a great idea Tiny."
"It was a joke," said Grim. She didn't actually want to watch Obi-Wan and Anakin spar.
"I think it sounds like a good idea as well," said Ahsoka.
"You too Ash?"
"I mean why not?" Ahsoka asked.
Grim had a list of reasons as to why not.
She knew that if she succeeded her worries were for nothing, but when she hadn't had any much progress on changing the future she didn't want to take her chances.
"What do you say, Master?" Anakin asked Obi-Wan.
"Very well then," Obi-Wan replied. "Maybe you'll learn something, and maybe they will too."
Obi-Wan and Anakin began their spar.
As Grim watched the two Jedi her mind took her elsewhere. She floated through her worries that her knowledge of the future brought.
Suddenly it was Mustafar and she was watching Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was not a spar and there was nothing graceful about it.
Ahsoka looked at Grim with a concerned expression. She didn't seem to be watching their Masters spar, although she was looking in that direction. She could tell that something was going inside her mind, and could feel Grim's worry.
"Grim?" She asked.
Grim heard Ahsoka's voice faintly.
She was allowing her fear to get the better of her again. She took a breath trying to calm herself down.
"Grim is everything alright?" Ahsoka was asking.
She blinked, and saw Ahsoka standing in front of her. "Um, yeah. Everything is fine. I just- it's nothing." Grim didn't want to admit the truth to Ahsoka.
That she had been worrying of a future that may never come.
Ahsoka didn't look convinced but she didn't press. "Okay then," she said. Although she gave Grim another concerned look.
Grim replied with an unconvincing smile to try and ease her friend's concerns.
Anakin and Obi-Wan had stopped their spar and went over to check on Grim. "You alright, Tiny?" Anakin asked. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I'm fine, just- it's nothing. Y'all can continue your spar I didn't mean to worry you," she replied.
Perhaps she had seen a ghost.
Obi-Wan looked at Grim with concern. "Do you want to talk about it?" he asked her.
"It's nothing," she insisted. "I'm fine, just spaced out."
"So bad that you began to panic?" Ahsoka asked her.
"I wasn't panicking." The three of them looked at her unconvinced. "Okay I may have been panicking." She paused for a moment, "actually I do want to talk with you, Master."
The Master and Padawan went to another place in the room where the other two couldn't hear them. Grim took a deep breath, "I was worrying about the future. About something that will probably never happen."
"Something that involves Anakin and I?" he asked.
"Yes," she admitted. "I don't want to talk about it more than that though."
"Alright," Obi-Wan said. It concerned him that a spar between himself and Anakin would cause Grim to worry about what she knew.
The two went back to Ahsoka and Anakin. "Alright, I'm good now," Grim told them. She grinned, "actually Ash, how about we spar now?"
Ahsoka gave Grim a grin back. "Alright, sounds like fun."
Grim and Ahsoka took their places and each ignited their lightsabers.
They smiled at each other before both moving at the same time. The two of them sparred and both matched equally well.
Grim spun her lightsaber into a reverse grip like her friend and tried to use it in the same way.
Only she messed up and hit herself in the face with her hand. Grim blushed and started to laugh. Ahsoka laughed as well.
"Well that was a failure," said Grim.
Ahsoka chuckled. "You know if you want to use the reverse grip I could help teach you?"
"I would love that," admitted Grim, blushing slightly.
"I think that's a wonderful idea," Obi-Wan said.
"As do I," said Anakin, although when he said there was a mischievous spark in his eyes.
"Can we start tomorrow though?" asked Grim. "I'm exhausted."
Everyone laughed. "Yes I think we've all sparred enough for one day," said Obi-Wan.
"I only had one spar," Ahsoka said. "And we didn't even finish."
"I hit myself in the face, Ash. I think you would've won."
Ahsoka laughed, "alright I'll take that. Just try not to hit yourself in the face again."
"No promises," replied Grim with a laugh.
The other three laughed as well.
