Chapter 5: Innocents Of Ryloth
The Separatists had taken control of Ryloth.
Anakin and Ahsoka had defeated their blockade and it was now time for Masters Windu and Kenobi to lead the invasion and liberate the people of the planet. Grim was anxious to get going as she walked beside her master.
"The first trick will be getting our troops on the ground," Obi-Wan told Mace as he and Grim entered the gunship.
"If you take the city of Nabet first, we'll have our landing zone," Windu replied.
"Well it's time to meet the natives," Obi-Wan said, as the doors closed and the ship lifted off. "We need to remember why we're here," said Obi-Wan as they headed to the mission. "We came to aid the twi'leks not destroy their homes. Cody?"
Obi-Wan let Cody address the other clones, as he told them all the mission.
Grim found herself restless and wanting to get a move on. She didn't like being cooped up in the gunships, she preferred the battlefield where there was more space. As blasterfire from the canons rocked the air Grim found herself wanting to be on the ground even more.
That was when Windu contacted them, "we can't risk landing our larger transports until you take out those guns." He said.
"Pull back. We'll take care of it," Obi-Wan told him. The call ended and he addressed everyone. "Who's up for a challenge?" he asked. Grim smirked, she was always up for a challenge. "We're not getting any reinforcements until those guns are out of commission."
The gunships landed in a barren forest of Ryloth, not too far from the wall where droids awaited. Once the doors opened they all made their way to battle.
As droids began to fire at them Grim and Obi-Wan ignited their lightsabers. The purple and blue lightsabers crackling to life, they deflected the blasterfire. Grim right next to Obi-Wan, finding herself emerged into the action.
"That bunker is going to be a problem, General," Cody told Obi-Wan.
"Leave the bunker to us," Obi-Wan replied. He looked over to Waxer and Boil, "you two wanted action, follow us," he said. The group of four made their way to the bunker and took shelter from the fire by crouching under some rocks. The droids continued to fire at the others in the battle. "Let's take them out. Now!"
Waxer threw a droid popper but it missed the droids. "We're going to have to get closer to the wall," he told the two Jedi.
"Try again," said Grim. "I'll help you out." Waxer nodded and threw another droid popper. Grim stretched out her hand and caught the droid popper with the force, guiding it to hit the droids it missed prior. Boil and Obi-Wan did the same for the other side, taking down the droids.
Having defeated the outer defenses they moved into the empty village. "The wall is secure, sir," Cody informed Kenobi. "Are we moving on to the guns?"
"We need to know what the droids have planned for us," he replied. "Send your best men to scout ahead."
"Will do sir," Cody replied. "Boil, Waxer come with me," he told the two.
Grim chuckled as she overheard Boil remark, "I guess we're the best."
As Cody left with Waxer,Boil, and Wooley. Grim remained with Obi-Wan and the other clone troops. She remembered this episode well enough to have a pretty clear picture of what would happen.
Nearby they found a broken down building where they set up command. Grim leaned against the wall as she waited for the others to return so the mission could go on.
Obi-Wan noted his padawan's restlessness and went over to her, "patience padawan, they will return."
"I know. Did you forget I have seen this before?" she asked him jokingly. "I just don't like to sit still."
"I understand," he replied. "Anakin was restless as well," he told her.
"Still is," she remarked.
Obi-Wan chuckled slightly. "Very true," he replied. "But still, you must be patient."
"Don't worry Master, I will," replied Grim.
Eventually Cody and Wooley returned and they made their plan, holomap in front of them. "We found the guns," Cody informed them. "They're in the courtyard here and here," he said, pointing to each of the locations. "But there's a complication. They've taken the locals hostages and are using them as shields."
"The Twi'lek prisoners will make this difficult, but not impossible," said Obi-Wan. "I still have a pretty good plan to take out those guns."
Grim wasn't paying too much attention to the discussion, when she noticed something. "It seems we have an uninvited visitor," commented Grim, pointing out the probe droid spying on them.
The others turned around and spotted the unwelcome droid as well. Before the droid could flee Cody shot it, destroying the droid. "How much of that do you think it overheard?" she asked them.
"Too much," Obi-Wan said. "But hopefully not enough."
"Getting those villagers out of harm's way is our first priority," said Windu. "I have faith in you."
"Cody, we'll go in with everything we have," Obi-Wan said. "Clear those hostages."
As they prepared for the assault Grim paced back and forth anxious for some action.
She decided to settle by practicing with her lightsaber. Obi-Wan had shown her some katas so she went over them repeating the actions as she waited for the real action to begin. It was relaxing for her as she fell into the movements, feeling as if it were nearly a dance.
"Padawan, it's time to move on," Obi-Wan told her after he talked with Cody. Grim deactivated her lightsaber and clipped it to the side of her belt.
"Understood General," she replied with a joking salute.
Obi-Wan shook his head, but Grim caught the hint of a small smile. "Come along, Grim."
They were on the move. Grim stayed close to Obi-Wan's side so as not to lose him.
That's when it happened.
Huge reptilian bipedal creatures with two short arms naitive to the world (creatures that reminded Grim of dinosaurs) began to attack.
"Fall back! Fall back!" shouted a clone trooper.
They began to run back as the creatures attacked the group. Clones were being trampled left and right as the creatures tried to eat the men.
Grim tried to ignore the blood from the carnage and focus on the battle, her heart pounding as adrenaline began to kick in.
She activated her lightsaber and rushed to help the men as she fought the creatures, slashing at them, and leaping over them when one charged at her.
Obi-Wan had ignited his lightsaber as well and was dodging the creatures too. He reached out a hand and into the force and suddenly all the creatures attention was turned to him. Though not with the hunger of before, Obi-Wan had seemed to almost tame them as he led them away.
Grim understood what was happening, and though she had seen this happen on the screen, to witness in reality was something else, and she couldn't help but be impressed.
"Incredible," one trooper whispered in awe.
"Yeah," agreed Grim.
"Shoot the bridge!" Obi-Wan ordered the clones.
As one the troopers aimed their blasters at the bridge and began to fire. The bridge collapsed and Obi-Wan began to leap out of the way as the creatures attacked him.
While he was jumping he lost his lightsaber, something Grim and Cody both took notice of, Grim rushed to grab it, accidentally shoving Cody out of the way and picked it up.
When Obi-Wan landed back in front of them, Grim rolled her eyes and muttered, "showoff." Before she handed Obi-Wan his lightsaber back, "for someone who teaches that my lightsaber is my life, you lose yours quite often master."
Obi-Wan took his weapon back and clipped it back to his belt before retorting, "I don't lose it, I know right where it is."
"Implying you mean to drop it?" asked Grim, raising an eyebrow.
"Perhaps," replied Obi-Wan.
"So you meant to drop it for me to pick up when we first meant?" Grim retorted, "because if I recall we were both surprised by that."
Before the two could bicker anymore a pothole nearby began to rattle. Obi-Wan unclipped his lightsaber and was about to activate it when Grim put her arm out, "hold on, it's Waxer and Boil," she informed everyone.
Sure enough the two troopers exited the pothole. "Waxer, Boil, where have you slackers been?" Cody demanded.
"Sir, there is an explanation," began Waxer.
"We got...sidetracked," finished Boil as a small twi'lek girl poked her head out from behind them.
Instantly the two Jedi softened at the sight. "I think I see what sidetracked you," Obi-Wan replied.
Obi-Wan and Grim both walked over to the young girl and knelt down to her height. "Hello, little one," said Grim. Numa covered her eyes and hid behind Waxer.
"She brought us here through the tunnel," Boil explained. "She knows her way around them pretty well, sirs."
Obi-Wan asked a question in Ryl, the native language of the twi'leks and Numa replied. Despite not understanding what either had said Grim still smiled at the interaction.
"The girl can lead us through the tunnels to the prisoners," Obi-Wan told them. The two Jedi stood up and Obi-Wan turned to the clone commander, "Cody, we're going to need a diversion." He told him.
Numa led Obi-Wan, Grim, Waxer, and Boil through the tunnels to where the prisoners were being kept while Cody and the others went to cause the diversion. They emerged in an area with empty cages, the place where the creatures had come from no doubt.
Grim lifted the youngling and held her in one arm while she and Obi-Wan walked ahead of the two clones. They defeated the very small amount of droids in the area and locked another in one of the cages. Numa said something in her language that only Obi-Wan understood. "Grim and I will take care of this," he said. "You keep her here."
Grim passed the child over to Waxer as she followed her master up the stairs and looked outside. Grim felt sick at the sight, countless innocent twi'leks kept as prisoners and living shields by the droid army.
Obi-Wan could sense her discomfort and put a hand on her shoulder, silently letting her know it would be alright for everyone in the end. Grim nodded at Obi-Wan to acknowledge that understood what he was conveying.
Obi-Wan signaled for Grim, Waxer and Boil to follow as they entered the area and hid behind the leg of a tank. Cody also understood the sign and the diversion began as blasterfire filled the air.
Obi-Wan and Grim ignited their lightsabers and sliced down the droids that were guarding the innocent prisoners. Then the two of them worked to cut the binders off of them.
Obi-Wan spoke in their language and motioned for the twi'leks to follow the two of them. The Jedi showed them their escape route and the innocents fled the battle.
"Grim, Waxer, Boil, come with me," he said once the battlefield was clear. Then he reignited his lightsaber.
"I'm with you Master," replied Grim following suit.
"We're with you, sir," they replied.
Obi-Wan ran to a gun, taking out the droids around it and the one who was controlling it. Grim assisted Waxer and Boil in loading it with ammo.
"Ready Master," she told him. Obi-Wan worked on firing at the other guns as Grim, Waxer and Boil gave him the ammo he needed.
Once the guns were destroyed the tactical droid, aimed the gun of his tank at the one where the Jedi had taken over and fired, blowing it to bits and sending the four flying to the ground.
Grim grunted at the impact, and ground her teeth a little in pain. For a moment she thought how perhaps wearing a tank top in a war zone was not the brightest idea.
She groaned a little as she began to stand with Waxer and Boil, Numa rushed over and helped the three before rushing over to Obi-Wan.
Noticing the gun from the tank aimed at her master adrenaline shot through Grim as she too rushed over to help him up. Numa grabbed his right side and Grim grabbed his left to help support him. Obi-Wan wrapped Numa in a protective embrace, and Grim did the same to shield her master.
The droid laughed mechanically. "You lose, General Kenobi." Just then all of the prisoners that Grim and Obi-Wan had freed before swarmed the droid as he repeated, "does not compute, does not compute."
Obi-Wan stood with the support of Grim and Numa, and attempted to cover the youngling's eyes, but she moved his hand to watch as the crowd destroyed the tactical droid.
From the sky appeared Windu's Jedi Cruiser as it landed. The Jedi master walked over to Grim and Obi-Wan, "great job getting rid of those guns," he told them. "Now we have a harder objective, taking the capitol."
"May the Force be with you Master Window," said Grim. "I mean Windu!" she quickly corrected before chuckling a little at her mistake. Windu smiled at the error while Obi-Wan chuckled as well.
Another day, another successful mission. And perhaps one day, a war that ends in victory for the Jedi.
