Chapter 36: The Day Before Night

Grim sat in the garden. It was her favorite place in the Temple. The life and light that filled it brought her peace.

Except for today.

Today the garden could not bring her peace.

Nothing could.

Today was the day the Jedi would die.

She had failed to stop it.

That is why she sat, holding her knees to her chest as she sobbed.

She could hardly breathe as she sobbed so much. There was so much light and yet she could hardly see it. Because now she knew she lost and hours from now all of the light would be extinguished.

She was mourning something yet to come. Grim was mourning something that was still around.

Her grief blinded and choked her.

It was all she was as she cried.

This was the last time she would be at her home, and she didn't have the strength or courage to embrace the moment as it was now. She couldn't find it in herself to attempt a last desperate chance to save lives and change the ending.

There was a chance.

She could speak to the Council.

She could kill Sidious.

She could warn Anakin.

She could kill Anakin.

She could get help.

She could take things into her own hands.

Yet she didn't take a single one of these chances.

She surrendered.

Yet still she was determined to fight. To survive past whatever horrors came tonight. And yet at the same time she could barely find it in herself to be alive.

So many emotions ran through her, and all of them choked her as she sobbed and mourned what was not yet lost.

"Grim?" Somebody asked.

She looked up to see Obi-Wan standing there. "Oh, hi Master," she said as she wiped away her tears, not wanting him to see her in such a state.

She was supposed to be happy, wasn't she?

To everyone the war was about to end and they would win. Except Grim knew the truth, and because of that she could not find it in herself to be happy.

"What's wrong?" he asked, sitting down beside her.

"I'd tell you, but there's no point to that now," she said. She didn't look at him, she only looked at the beautiful scenery around her.

Yet nothing beautiful lasts forever.

Everything came to an end eventually, and everything one day dies, but the way things would unfold in the night would be because of a crime.

It would be a crime that this universe would never recover from. For even when the Jedi came back, it would not be the same. For so much will have been lost.

Grim looked at her Master. "How do you let go of something that is gone, when it isn't yet gone?" she asked him.

Obi-Wan considered her words for a moment. There was more behind the question than was said.

She had told the Council before that she wished to stop the destruction of the Jedi. Is this what she was asking about?

Did she feel as if she had lost?

"Is this about what you said earlier?" he asked her.

Grim looked away. "Yes," she admitted quietly. "It is."

He was quiet as he tried to think of the right way to respond.

There was so much grief inside of her. Her fear swirled around her like a storm. It was stronger than he had ever felt it. And yet her grief seemed to be even stronger.

He considered what he told her again. He reconsidered his response as well.

Then he spoke; "There's no way to know exactly what will happen, the future is always in motion, remember that my young padawan. As my Master taught me, remember to be mindful of the future, but not at the expense of the moment."

Grim nodded. The words gave her little comfort, but she appreciated them. "How do you do that? I know exactly what the future holds, it's not like I have vague feelings or visions like other Jedi."

"I can't give you the answers to everything, you must find your own way," he replied.

He could only guide her. She understood.

"Okay," she replied. Her voice was quiet. She stared back out into the garden. Losing herself in thought.

She felt the Force around her. Reaching out, searching for... she wasn't sure what.

Light?

That was everywhere. At least for this last day. The time remaining was slowly fading.

Hope?

Yes, she supposed that was it. And she didn't have to search far to find it. He was right next to her.

Grim frowned momentarily. "You didn't come here because you knew I was crying," she said, opening her eyes. She looked at Obi-Wan, and quietly her voice fragile she asked: "We have a mission, don't we?"

"Yes," He admitted. "We're being sent to defeat General Grievous, we believe we've discovered his location in the Utapau System."

She sighed, an almost defeated sound. "I'm not ready to face today's events," she admitted. "I feel like I'm walking to the edge, and what happens when I reach it?" She paused for a moment considering her own question. "I guess we'll find out when that time arrives."

Grim and Obi-Wan stood up.

She looked around the garden. As if taking in every little detail and framing it as a picture in her mind. She was saying a silent goodbye to the place that had always given her the most comfort.

When she was lost it was here she had gone to find herself. It was here she always felt most connected to the Force. Surrounded by nature, and surrounded by her family. Even when she struggled to feel like she belonged, this place reminded her she did.

Grim felt tears threaten to spill again and she wiped them away. It didn't have to be goodbye.

Except deep down she knew it was farewell.

She turned around and walked with Obi-Wan.

The war was almost over. Although she had already learned the ending. It would end in tragedy.

Perhaps Anakin was right, perhaps tragedy was destined for them. Tragedy was certainly destined for the end.

Grim and Obi-Wan were on their way to what she knew would be their final mission together. Maybe even their final battle if she died in the oncoming slaughter. Anakin walked beside them, and Grim found herself unable to look at him.

It would be easier to imagine he was dead now.

"You're gonna need me on this one," Anakin told Obi-Wan.

"Oh, I agree. However it may turn out to be a wild bantha chase, and even if it isn't I have Grim with me," He replied.

"Master," said Anakin. Obi-Wan stopped and faced him. Grim was at the edge of the steps. She knew what this conversation was. She closed her eyes and made herself focus on the Force to ignore Anakin and Obi-Wan's words. She didn't want to hear the ghost. She didn't want to face that he wasn't dead yet.

She wanted to say something, scream at Anakin, and warn him. But she could not.

It was over and she had lost. It was too late.

Hadn't she figured that out last night? She had even admitted it.

This was the last time she would ever see him. If she did survive it would still be true - it would be Vader she would see.

She found herself lost for words. How could she say goodbye to the brother who would bring their demise?

She couldn't.

Instead Grim allowed it to be Obi-Wan and Anakin who bid each other farewell - both thinking they would see each other again. She alone was left with the knowledge that it was over.

She had lost, and the Jedi would pay the price.

Anakin turned to her, "may the force be with you Grim."

Her heart ached at those words.

How could he say that?

How could he say that when he would betray her, Obi-Wan - everyone?

Leave everyone in the ashes of his fire.

Of course he did not know any of these things, only she did.

So he could say those words because he meant them - and perhaps that's what hurt her even more.

Anakin was still light but to her he was already gone - lost to the clutches of darkness.

Grim couldn't even bear to return the blessing, she just smiled solemnly and nodded her head in acknowledgement.

For how could she wish the Force to be with a traitor - with a Sith?

With that the Master and Padawan left for Utapau, to defeat Grievous.

She took one last look at Anakin Skywalker - and as she watched the other Jedi leave, she could not help but feel an ache.

For she had lost, the ending was upon them, and though to all it seemed as victory was near - Grim knew that to be false.

Light would die today; darkness would cloud the galaxy.

As the two Jedi left Courcant - left the Temple - left their home, she tried to cling to the light that was left, knowing that when - if - she returned that light would be dead.

Buried in the ashes that the Sith would leave.

On the ship, she sat by one of the windows and watched until Courscant grew further and further away. Knowing this was likely the last time she would ever see her home. She was trying to whisper a silent goodbye to the world. Afterall, she did not get the chance to say goodbye to Earth.

Once the planet was out of sight she left to wander aimlessly. To be alone with her thoughts and try to calm her fear - to soothe her grief ridden heart.

Already she mourned for those who were not yet gone.

No, the future was not written in stone, stories can be changed and re-worked. After all, had she not yet already proven this to be true?

Still it felt like the end, as if the ending was written, and all that was left was to keep turning the page to get to it.

Grim did not believe in destiny - she did not believe in fate, if she had then why did she sacrifice so much to save a universe that wasn't her own?

The Jedi had offered to help her find a way back to the universe she once belonged to, and if she had believed nothing could be done then perhaps she would have taken it, but she did not.

For she did not believe in things being predetermined, and she was determined to change the story that laid before her.

Had Grim changed the story?

Or did it now remain the same?

Yes, she had changed the course of some events, but in the end will that have mattered?

Did Sidious still win his cruel game?

These thoughts plagued her - had plagued her the moment she, Skywalker, and Kenobi, had rushed to save the Chancellor.

For that had marked the beginning - the beginning of Revenge Of The Sith; the end of The Clone Wars.

Her fear wrapped around her heart, enveloping it. The darkness whispered for her to give in, for she had already lost.

Yet still - on the edge of defeat, knowing the story was over - Grim remained determined, and glued to the light.

She would not stray, even when everything was gone. For despite all the darkness she knew had won, she knew about the light that was to come.

How even still the Sith could not vanquish hope, or the Jedi.

She found herself wandering into the hanger. She surprised herself by ending up here, normally she found herself in a training room. Usually made for the clones but she found that as the war wore on she would train there too.

She found her starfighter next to Obi-Wan's. She hopped on top of the nose of the fighter, and all at once a new grief hit her.

Not for those gone.

Not for the Jedi who were unaware of their fates.

Not for the clones who she had grown to see as brothers, that in just a few hours would be traitors. As she would be to them.

Not for the ghost who haunted her, even though he still lived.

This grief was for herself. Because the grief of Order 66 had already settled itself in. With it came something new, the realization deep inside, that she too was likely to die. What proof did she have to say otherwise?

Obi-Wan would survive. She knew that. But she wasn't Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master. She was Grim Kennet, Jedi Padawan.

She wasn't any hero in a story, she was still the same as she always had been. A lost child searching for somewhere to belong.

And she knew she belonged with the Jedi. So perhaps her death belonged with them too.

This new grief collided with her so suddenly, it seemed to take the breath out of her. She brought her knees to her chest and hugged her legs. Sobbing as it crashed into her.

Obi-Wan found her in the hanger. Gently, being careful not to startle her, he walked over to her. "Grim, what's wrong?" He asked gently.

She turned her head frantically, her eyes shooting around the room, until she saw him and calmed down ever slightly. "I don't want to die," she replied quietly, her voice shaking. She sounded so young.

The words felt like an arrow to his heart. He gave her a sympathetic look, "we will defeat Grievous, little one."

She shook her head. "That's not what I'm afraid of."

He understood. "What you told the Council..."

"It's today. I know you'll survive. I know you'll return to Coruscant. But I don't know if I will, my only advantage is that I know it'll happen and how. That won't save me," Grim choked up. "I don't want to die, Obi-Wan."

Obi-Wan placed a hand on her shoulder. Then suddenly she reached forward and wrapped him into a hug. She sobbed into his chest, getting tears on his robes, but he didn't mind. He patted her head and held her back as she cried. He found himself unable to find the words to comfort her.

Then she said something unexpected. "Promise me something, Master. If I die today, if I'm killed and you lose even more, promise me you'll never give up hope. There's always light, even in darkness."

"Don't give up either Grim," he said, looking down to see her tear filled eyes. "You don't know for certain."

"But I do, everything is pointing to the ending I've already seen. My sacrifices mean nothing."

"The future is always in motion. You only know one path."

"And I'm afraid of it. I don't want to die. Don't let me die, Obi-Wan."

"I won't, we'll both survive, okay?"

"Promise?"

He couldn't. This wasn't something he could promise, and yet, "I promise."

Grim had already let go. She wiped away her tears. "Why were you looking for me, Master?"

"I was about to speak with Ahsoka about her siege on Mandalore, I thought you might want to join and speak with her again?"

She considered it for a moment. "I'll only have to say goodbye," she said.

"Grim..."

"Let me know when we've arrived for Utapau, I just...need time to prepare."

"Don't give up hope, little one."

"I haven't."

"You don't sound like someone who has hope."

"Then don't listen," she walked away.

She spent the passing hours practicing with her lightsaber. Going over some simple moves that she had been taught early on as a Padawan.

It was like a dance. She found herself eased into it. Falling into the Force reaching for the light while it still lived.

It was as this that Obi-Wan found her.

"Padawan, it's time," he told her.

Grim clipped her lightsaber to her belt and followed him to the hanger.

Cody was waiting for them. She felt herself go tense seeing her older brother and forced the muscles in her body to relax. She had to remind herself that it hadn't started yet.

But the word "yet'' lingered in the air.

The astromech in Obi-Wan's starfighter projected a holomap, this was where Cody, Grim, and Obi-Wan gathered.

"Fortunately most of the cities are concentrated on this small continent over here," Cody was explaining.

"On the far side," observed Grim.

"We'll keep them distracted until you get there," Obi-Wan told Cody. "Just don't take too long."

He smiled at themi. "Come on. When have I ever let you down?"

She wanted to say "never once" and joke back with a smile at who she saw as her older brother, but words failed her and she said nothing.

Obi-Wan chuckled, "very well," he said. He climbed into his starfighter and Grim climbed into hers. "The burden is on my padawan and I to not destroy all the droids until you arrive."

Cody smiled. He looked at Grim. "Hey kid, may the Force be with you."

She didn't meet his eyes, she only gave him a shaky smile in acknowledgement.

She didn't notice Cody frowning when she didn't respond. Or the worried expression he wore.

Too lost in the future to see the present.

Grim's hands shook as she gripped the controls.

She could hardly breathe and her heart raced. She flew her ship beside Obi-Wan as they left the hangar to fly to Utapau. She barely noticed.

She could feel the panic building within her.

It was clear Obi-Wan could sense her fear, when his voice came through her comm. "You worry of being unable to change the future when it is already certain to have been changed," he told her. Before she could ask what he meant he explained. "In the future that you are aware of, you do not exist. Already, just by that fact, the future won't play out as you have seen from your universe. You have also altered things in the past without directly interfering with things. Perhaps, you may indirectly change this future moment you know of as well."

"You have a point, Master," admitted Grim. "Maybe you're right, maybe I have changed enough. Besides, as you reminded me yesterday I need to focus on the present."

"You have learned well, padawan."

"May the Force be with us."

Arriving on Utapau did little to nothing for Grim's anxieties. She stayed near her starfighter fiddling with her padawan braid as she allowed Obi-Wan to do the talking.

He walked back over to her, "this is the place, but you knew that already." He hopped into his fighter and spoke to his droid. "Take the fighter back to the ship, tell Cody: Grim and I have made contact. Relay this to Grim's droid as well."

The droid made a sound of acknowledgement. Grim still couldn't understand the damned things, but learning what astromechs were saying had become the least of her worries.

Grim and Obi-Wan reached a higher level and watched as their fighters flew back to the ship. They then began to make their way to get a varactyl. As they headed that way Obi-Wan decided to bring up her fear again. "You know the future isn't set, Grim."

"I know," she replied. "Where are you going with this?"

"I know you're still worried."

"If you knew what I did, you would be too."

"I can't know if you never talk to me," he replied.

"You'll know when it happens, won't you?"

"We don't know if it will happen."

"If it doesn't happen I'll tell you. If it does, then you'll know."

"You're being avoidant again."

"So what if I am? It doesn't matter." They reached where the varactyls were at. "We're here anyways."

Grim's eyes landed on Boga, and suddenly all that fear was wiped away. She ran up to the varactyl with a childish sort of grin on her face. She actually hugged the creature before anybody could stop her.

Obi-Wan laughed gently seeing the excitement of his padawan. He smiled seeing her smile, and walked over to her. "Did you find one you like?" he asked.

"Yes! And her name is Boga! Hey, Master, after the mission can we keep her?" she asked. She sounded just as she did when she had first become his padawan.

In the excitement of making her new friend it seemed she had forgotten about the worries that had been plaguing her for the past three days. Instead there was only childlike amusement and wonder returning. Excitement and joy sparkled in the padawan's eyes.

Obi-Wan chuckled at her question, smiling at her. "We would do best to ask first, and I don't know if she would be allowed in the Temple."

"Then she can be a pet for the whole 212th!" said Grim.

He laughed and ruffled her hair a little. "Maybe, but first we have a battle to fight, little one."

Even that didn't seem to bring down Grim's mood. "Okay then, Obi-Wan!"

As Grim and Obi-Wan rode Boga up to the higher levels, the padawan could not help but wonder how the Separatists had not heard them over the varactyl's noises. "It's a miracle they can't hear us," she whispered half-jokingly to her Master.

He chuckled quietly at his padawan's joke. "She's almost as stealthy as you," he replied, hoping to keep her in a light-hearted mood.

She had been shut off from everything and everyone for the last couple of days. Even when she had admitted to the Jedi Council the event she had been working so hard to prevent she never elaborated and instead had stormed out of the Council chambers.

At least she had cheered up seeing Boga.

"Hey!" Grim exclaimed. Even so she could not suppress the small smile that had managed to etch its way onto her face.

He only laughed slightly at her reaction, "I am only messing with you my young padawan."

Once they had reached the area where General Grievous was speaking with the other leaders of the Separatists the two Jedi slid off of Boga's back. Obi-Wan patted the varactyl's head as they moved in front of her. The Master and Padawan waited and watched as the Separatists leaders left.

Grim and Obi-Wan looked at each other.

Without having to say a word Obi-Wan knew that his padawan had seen this very thing occur in the fiction of her universe.

Grim silently confirmed this, as she wrapped her hand around her lightsaber and looked to him for the signal to jump.

He took off the hood of his cloak and nodded at her to indicate that it was time. He shed the rest of his cloak and as one Master and Padawan leapt down behind the Separatist general.

"Hello there," they greeted in sync.

"Jinx!" said Grim.

Before Obi-Wan could reply Grievous and his bodyguards turned around to face the Jedi.

"General Kenobi. You are a bold one." Greivous replied as she spoke in sync with him.

"Jinx to you too! Ha!" she said laughing.

The two stared at her.

"Kill them," Grievous told his droid bodyguards.

The droids made their way to them, their electrostaffs at the ready.

As one the Jedi ignited their lightsabers.

Grim made to take down two of them but Obi-Wan set a hand in front of her, silently telling her to not pursue the fight.

Then making sure she had obeyed him he brought down a vent on top of all four of the droids crushing them in an instant.

One droid was still halfway free and trying to regain its weapon but Grim rushed forward and put her lightsaber through its head.

The two Jedi stood in front of Grievous as the droid army all had their blasters pointed at them, ready to fire if given the order. Though Grievous ordered the opposite of the droids, "back away! I will deal with these Jedi slime myself."

"Your move," they both replied as one.

"You fools. I have been trained in your Jedi arts, by Count Dooku," replied Grievous as he removed his cape and ignited his four shining lightsabers.

"And Master Kenobi trained the man who killed him," remarked Grim, as she braced for the oncoming fight.

Beside her she heard the quiet sigh from Obi-Wan.

"Attack, Jedi," laughed Grievous.

Master and Padawan looked at each other and nodded. Without words they shared a plan.

Obi-Wan would draw Grievous' attention, having a long standing rivalry with the good general while Grim would attack from behind.

Grievous approached the Jedi and as he spun his lightsabers he focused on Obi-Wan.

Grim leapt up and went behind him.

Grievous struck at Kenobi.

Obi-Wan intercepted with his own thrust between the two blades.

Grim slashed to the side - Grievous spun and blocked Kennet's attack with two of his sabers as he swung at her with the other two.

She jumped back in time to dodge the attack, before attempting to counter with her own.

Obi-Wan leapt up behind Grievous as well and the Master and Padawan fought together.

Without the need for words they could communicate - without looking they could communicate.

The Force was all they needed. For they were one with the Force.

Even with Grim shutting everyone out, in the hurricane of battle she was open.

The Force flowed through them both.

Kenobi attacked from the right.

Kennet attacked from the left.

They blocked each pair of lightsabers that came at them and Grievous had to combat both Jedi at once.

Obi-Wan managed to break through his defense and sliced off one of his hands.

He groaned and switched his focus to Kenobi, allowing Grim to strike and land a blow, as she too sliced off the other hand.

Grim and Obi-Wan were side by side once more as Grievous barraged them with attacks that the two Jedi defended against.

Suddenly blasterfire rippled through the air as clone troops rained from the sky.

The 212th had arrived and the battle had truly begun.

Grim froze as she remembered the future.

Caught in the storm of battle she had forgotten what was to occur when this ended.

She had forgotten that she had failed to stop it.

Somewhere right now, Anakin was informing the Chancellor - or perhaps he already had - that Obi-Wan and his Padawan had engaged General Grievous.

Somewhere right now, Palpatine was promising - or perhaps had already promised - Anakin a way to save his wife.

Somewhere right now, Anakin was about to learn - or maybe already was learning - that Palpatine was Sidious.

Somewhere right now, The Jedi were about to confront Sidious.

Somewhere, right now, the war was about to end.

Somewhere right now, the Jedi were about to die.

"Army or not, you must realize, you are doomed," Grievous told themi.

"Oh, I don't think so," replied Obi-Wan as he used the Force to send him flying back.

But they were doomed.

They had been doomed from the beginning.

Nothing could have been done to change it.

Though only Grim knew this.

Only Grim knew the ending.

It was over.

The war was lost.

Grievous fled the battle.

Obi-Wan called Boga back and the two Jedi leapt on and the chase began.

As they chased after himl, Kenobi's lightsaber fell out of his hand and landed away on the distant ground.

"You lost your life Master, better hope Cody gives it back," joked Grim.

Then she remembered what would happen in mere minutes from now.

Cody may give Obi-Wan his lightsaber back, but he would still lose his life.

As would she.

As would every Jedi.

Each moment Order 66 grew closer.

They chased after Grievous.

Once they caught up, Obi-Wan led Boga to be right next to him.

Grievous tried to jab him with his electrostaff but he grabbed it and took the weapon for his own. A temporary replacement for the one he had dropped.

Obi-Wan attacked Grievous, but Grievous got his weapon back and dragged Obi-Wan off of Boga onto his own mount.

Boga stopped suddenly without Obi-Wan at the reins. Grim quickly hurried forward and grabbed the reins. "C'mon girl," she muttered trying to get her to continue the chase. "Come on," she tried again. "Please we have to catch up to them," she told her gently.

After a little more coaxing Boga continued the chase after the two generals. They arrived just in time-

-to see Grievous throw Obi-Wan off the edge of the platform.

"Oh and I'm the reckless one???" commented Grim as she jumped off Boga and ignited her lightsaber.

"Hey, Wheezy!" Grim called getting Grievous' attention.

He turned around to face her.

She smirked and got into a ready position.

Grievous moved first, charging at Grim.

Grim leapt up over him.

He turned around and hit her with his electrostaff.

She cried out before grabbing the weapon herself.

Before she could yank the weapon free of his grip however, he pulled upwards causing her to meet his face.

"Oh wow. Have you looked at getting something for your eyes?" she asked him.

Grievous threw her off the staff and she hit the ground near the ship he had been going to for his escape, landing on her face first. She grabbed her nose groaning a bit. She picked up her lightsaber again, ready to fight but-

Obi-Wan had already shot the droid general in the heart and Grim watched in gruesome horror as he exploded into flames.

He got up, and tossed the blaster away, "so uncivilized."

"The blaster or the death? Besides, I had that under control," She told him as she clipped her lightsaber back to her belt.

"Really? Your bloody nose says otherwise," He retorted.

Grim rolled her eyes and wiped her nose with her gloved hand. The blood only smeared on her cheek.

"What bloody nose?" she asked.

"Well now your cheek is bloody," Obi-Wan told her. "Come here," he added.

"I don't need you to clean my bloody face," she said, taking a step back from him. "Now come on, the men are having all our fun," she added.

"Grim you're being avoidant again," he told her gently. "I'm here for you if you need help."

"Well I don't!" she snapped. "I am doing just fine, thank you."

"You're afraid, I can feel it," he told her. "We should talk about this, I have felt the fear surrounding you since we left Coruscant and it's at its highest peak right now."

Grim felt as Obi-Wan tried to feel for the source of her fear through their bond. She always allowed him in, and she could tell that he was concerned that she was so closed off. She could feel his concern through their bond.

"Grim, what is bothering you?" he asked her.

She shut him out and built shields so high it forced him out.

Obi-Wan stumbled backwards as if her shutting him out of their bond had been a physical slap in the face.

"Grim-"

"I'm fine," she lied through gritted teeth.

"If you were fine you wouldn't shut me out like this, you're usually so open with me. Don't think I haven't noticed you closing yourself off over the past few days. Even when you told the Council the exact thing you wished to prevent you were dodging our questions and closing us out. You are decidedly not fine and we should discuss what is on your mind."

Grim let down her shields a little bit, inviting Obi-Wan to feel her fear through their bond. "You're right I am afraid."

"Why?"

She closed him out again.

Obi-Wan frowned.

She knew in her heart that she should let him in, but she did not want him to feel her pain.

"It doesn't matter," she said. "We have a war to win."

He could tell this was a losing battle. He let out a sigh and replied, "alright, we will discuss this more later."

She nodded. "Alright," she replied.

Though she knew there would be no later.

As very soon their lives would end.

The two Jedi rode Boga back up to where the battle was occurring.

On the way Grim sensed a sudden emptiness. Her eyes widened.

Anakin had fallen.

Obi-Wan could feel the sudden panic rising in her. "Grim?" he asked.

"It's begun," she replied, barely audible.

He looked at her with concern. Had she sensed something in the Force? This didn't feel like the kind of panic she had when she knew from her universe.

How did Obi-Wan not feel it? Grim had to wonder. Anakin was his brother, surely he should feel his fall. Or perhaps just as she had been, he was immersed in battle. Unaware of what was happening on the other end of the galaxy. What his other Padawan had done, and was doing now.

They reached Cody. Grim's fear got worse.

"Commander, contact your troops," Obi-Wan told him. "Tell them to move to the higher levels."

"Very good, sir," said Cody. He handed Obi-Wan his lightsaber. "Oh, by the way sir, I think you'll be needing this."

"Thank you, Cody," said Obi-Wan as he took his lightsaber back. "Grim, I want you to stay with Cody."

She fell off of Boga at the words. "What?" she gawked. Panic settled deep into her bones now. "Master wait-"

"We need to get a move on, we have a battle to win, we can talk about things afterwards," Obi-Wan told her. He left before she could protest.

"There isn't going to be an after," she whispered quietly.

Her gaze shifted to Cody. The fear was evident on her face.

Just moments now.

Just mere moments before everything falls apart.

Slowly Grim began to step back. Walking away subtly so as to not have him notice.

Except he did notice. "Something wrong, kid? You look like you've seen a ghost."

She might as well have.

"No, everything's fine, Commander. Now come on, let's go do what General Kenobi said. We have a war to win."

"You're right about that," he replied.

Just then his comm beeped.

Grim froze.

She wanted to grab the comm and throw it as far as possible.

Anything to stop what was about to happen.

He answered the comm and the holographic image of Sidious appeared. "Commander Cody, the time has come..."

Grim wanted to scream.

She had to drown out the next words.

She had to do something.

Her body and mind betrayed her as she remained glued to the spot fear freezing the blood in her veins.

In just three words her life came apart.

Years of suffering came to be for nothing.
