Chapter 31: The Beginning

Under normal circumstances Grim would be giddy about being back to Coruscant.

However this was not a normal circumstance and inside Grim was panicking, although she didn't show it for the others sake.

A battle was raging over the planet and she had been sent alongside Masters Skywalker and Kenobi to save the day.

As per the usual routine.

Although she knew nothing about this was usual.

Grim knew that this was the beginning of the end.

This was the time Grim's training would be put to the test. It was time for her to see if she could rewrite Star Wars once more, and if she couldn't then it was time to see if she could survive the storm to come.

First, however; they had to rescue the chancellor.

Grim piloted her ship in between the other two Jedi. Staying in the middle as they spun to dodge blaster fire.

Grim kept her mind focused on the battle so as to not let her growing anxieties into her mind.

She knew this was the turning point in the war. In history.

Grim knew that this battle marked the countdown until the war ended.

Although it remained to be seen if it would end as the story had said or as Grim had written.

"Grievous' ship is directly ahead," Anakin informed the other two. "The one crawling with vulture droids."

"I see it," Grim replied.

"Oh, this is going to be easy," added Obi-Wan, with his usual sarcasm.

Even though nobody could see, Grim rolled her eyes.

The vulture droids began to fly towards them.

"Oddball, do you copy?" Obi-Wan asked.

"Copy, Red Leader," replied Oddball.

"Mark my position. Form your squad up behind me," ordered Obi-Wan.

"We're on your tail, General Kenobi," Oddball said.

The squad of clones flew behind the three Jedi as the vulture droids came closer.

"This is where the fun begins," said Anakin.

This time when Grim rolled her eyes it was nearly audible.

"Let them pass between us," Obi-Wan said.

The two squads of fighting ships passed and blaster fire ensued.

Grim held onto her controls tightly as she let the all too familiar sensation of battle sink in. She allowed herself to momentarily forget what this battle meant. Instead she sunk into her usual routine that a space battle came with. She didn't even have to think of what to do, she had done so enough times that her body already knew, and as always she had the force to guide her.

"They're all over me," said a clone. "Get them off my-" but the comm cut to static before he could finish.

"I'm gonna go help them out," said Anakin.

Grim would have offered as well, but her anxieties began to settle in again. It was getting closer, being near clones was dangerous.

"No," said Obi-Wan. "No, they are doing their job so we can do ours."

Grim heard Anakin sigh as he knew Master Kenobi was right.

Grim almost felt a little bad for him, she understood wanting to save as many people as possible.

That's why she never tried to go back to her universe when she had been offered the chance.

That's why she had argued with the Mortis Gods, why she had thrown away every chance she had to go back to her old life.

She wanted to save as many as she could.

Except over the years Grim had learned that it wasn't possible to save everyone.

Of course, that didn't stop Grim from working on changing the fate of the entire galaxy.

"Missiles! Pull up," said Anakin as several missiles were shot at the three Jedi.

"They overshot us," Obi-Wan said as the three moved out of the way.

"They're coming back around," Grim said, looking back to see the missiles change direction.

Grim managed to dodge the missiles while at the same time she muttered a string of curse words that only Master Kenobi would understand.

"I'm hit!" called Obi-Wan. "Grim? Anakin?"

Grim and Anakin looked at Obi-Wan's ship and saw the problem. After all, it was pretty difficult to miss. "I see them. Buzz droids," the two informed him in sync.

"They're shutting down the controls."

"Move to the right so I can get a clear shot at them," Anakin told Obi-Wan.

"The mission," Obi-Wan reminded them both. Despite the fact that it was Anakin who had said he would try and help him, Kenobi knew all too well that Grim would join in. "Get to the command ship. Get the chancellor. I'm running out of tricks here."

Anakin didn't listen and neither did Grim as she had begun to fly beside Anakin.

Anakin aimed at Obi-Wan's ship trying to shoot off the droids, and Grim also attempted to help in this way.

"Hold your fire!" Obi-Wan told his two padawans. "You're not helping here!"

"I agree," said Anakin.

"Bad idea," agreed Grim.

"I can't see a thing," said Obi-Wan. "My cockpit's fogging."

Grim and Anakin both moved to either side of Obi-Wan's ship.

"They're all over me! Anakin! Grim!"

The two began to bump his ship trying to get the buzz droids off.

"Hold on you two! You're gonna get us all killed! Get out of here. There's nothing more the two of you can do."

"I'm not leaving without you, Master," Grim replied with determination, however she did give Obi-Wan some more flying space.

Anakin bumped his ship into Obi-Wan's once more, killing some buzz droids but getting one on his own in the process. "Get him Artoo," Anakin told his droid, as the buzz droid tried to attack. "Watch out," he warned.

"Artoo, hit the buzz droid's center eye," Obi-Wan advised the little astromech.

Artoo followed Obi-Wan's advice and the droid died and slid off Anakin's ship. "Yeah, you got him, Artoo!" cheered Anakin.

"Great, Artoo," said Obi-Wan.

"Great job, Artoo!" Grim said.

The three Jedi continued flying towards the ship.

Shooting vulture droids and dodging blaster fire.

Once more Grim found herself going into her usual battle routine. She pushed away her worries of the future and focused on the moment.

At this very moment, there was blaster fire all around her.

At either side of her were two Jedi whom she had come to see as family.

She only wished Ahsoka was there too, but of course she was busy with her own mission.

Grim shook her head, she couldn't be thinking about her right now.

She had to focus on the present again.

Even when Ahsoka wasn't around she managed to distract her.

This wasn't the time to be distracted.

The fate of the whole galaxy depended on her. Here and now.

"The general's command ship is dead ahead," Anakin told the other two.

Artoo whirled in distress.

"Well, have you noticed the shields are still up?!" Obi-Wan asked, his voice cracking a bit at the end.

"Sorry, Master," apologized Anakin. He flipped his ship to be on the other side of Grim and Obi-Wan and shot at the shield controls, deactivating the shields.

The doors began to close and the three of them raced to enter Grievous's ship.

"Oh, I have a bad feeling about this!" Obi-Wan cried as the three Jedi landed in the hangar.

Obi-Wan jumped out of his ship while it was still skidding to a halt activating his shining blue lightsaber in the middle of his jump, destroying several droids before he was even standing.

Grim rolled her eyes and muttered, "show off," as she landed her ship far more gracefully and hopped out before igniting her lightsaber and going to her master's side.

Anakin waited until his ship wasn't in motion at all before unbuckling, hopping out of his ship and igniting his lightsaber.

The three Jedi quickly began to destroy the droids, deflecting their blaster fire and cutting them down.

Not even breaking a sweat.

"Artoo, locate the chancellor," Obi-Wan said, once all the droids had been defeated. Artoo whirled and began to do as he was told, pulling up a holo-projection. "The chancellor's signal is coming from right there-" he pointed to the place on the projection. "The observation platform on the top of that spire."

"I sense Count Dooku," said Anakin.

"I sense a trap," replied Obi-Wan.

"Next move?" Grim asked, despite knowing the answer.

Obi-Wan gave Grim a smile, "spring the trap."

Grim rolled her eyes. She hated these types of plans. "Things always go wrong when you say that."

"Do you have a different idea?" Obi-Wan asked.

Yeah, leave and let the chancellor be killed. Is what she wanted to say, however she knew that would be inappropriate. Instead Grim sighed, "no I do not."

"Then springing the trap it is," said Anakin.

Grim groaned but followed the two older Jedi.

Artoo whistled and tried to follow the three of them. "No, you need to stay with the ship," Anakin told him.

Obi-Wan tossed the astromech a comlink, "here take this and wait for orders."

The three Jedi made their way to the elevators.

Just as they reached them, they heard the all too familiar sound of metal rolling on metal.

Grim was the first to turn around, "destroyers," she told the other two.

The others turned around and the three of them ignited their lightsabers in sync.

They blocked the blaster fire as the doors opened and they walked backwards inside the elevator.

Suddenly they were held at blaster point by a bunch of battle droids behind them. "Drop your weapons," they commanded. "I said drop 'em."

The three turned around and shared a look before quickly destroying all of the droids.

They deactivated their lightsabers and Grim let out a sigh.

"Tired already?" joked Anakin. "We're just getting started."

"Not tired of this battle," replied Grim. "Just of this war, I want it to be over."

"Have patience my young padawan, the war tires us all, but it will end," Obi-Wan told her.

"And soon," Anakin added. "I have a feeling we're about to win."

"Let us hope that it's true," Grim replied.

The elevator stopped suddenly. "Did you press the stop button?" Obi-Wan asked the two of them.

"No," they replied in sync.

"Did you?" Anakin asked.

"No."

"Well, there's more than one way out of here," said Anakin, igniting his lightsaber and beginning to carve a hole in the roof.

"We don't want to get out. We want to get moving," Grim reminded him.

"Artoo, activate elevator three-one-one-seven-four," Obi-Wan spoke to the comm. "Come in, Artoo. Artoo, do you copy? Artoo, activate the elevator number three-one-one-seven-four. Activate the elevator three-one-one-seven-four. Artoo we-"

He was interrupted by a hole in the roof falling to the ground, causing him to move out of the way. Grim had to move out of the way as well. Anakin jumped through the hole and onto the top of the elevator.

"Always on the move," Obi-Wan sighed, shaking his head. He went back to trying to contact Artoo. "Artoo, switch on the comlink. Artoo, can you hear me? Artoo?"

Suddenly the elevator began to go down quickly. Both Grim and Obi-Wan shouted as they lost their balance.

"Artoo! Artoo!" called Obi-Wan.

The two stood up again, dusting themselves off.

"Stop. Stop. Artoo we need to be going up. Artoo, do you copy? Artoo, do you hear me? Artoo, we need to be going up, not down."

The elevator stopped suddenly and the two of them lost their balance and fell on the ground again. Grim got up first and then helped Obi-Wan up. The elevator began to go up.

"Now, that's better," said Obi-Wan, relieved that they were finally heading in the right direction.

Anakin jumped back in the elevator and on instinct Grim and Obi-Wan turned around and ignited their lightsabers.

When they saw it was Anakin they deactivated them, and sighed in relief. "Oh, it's you," they said in sync.

"What was that all about?" Anakin asked them.

"Well, Artoo has been-" Obi-Wan began.

"Uh, no loose wire jokes," Anakin interrupted.

"Did I say anything?" Obi-Wan asked.

"He's trying."

"I didn't say anything!"

Grim chuckled a little at the exchange. "We've known you long enough, Master. You were going to say it."

"I was not," said Obi-Wan.

"You were," agreed Anakin.

Despite finding their bickering amusing, Grim's smile fell.

This was the beginning of the end.

All three of them knew this.

The fate of the galaxy rested on them; they all knew it.

But only Grim knew this:

That this right here would be a deciding moment. That right now, everything hung in the balance.

The whole war was a game of chess, but nobody knew this. Just her and the Chessmaster.

The one pulling the strings behind every moment.

The one the trio had been sent to rescue.
