Chapter 27: Cracked Hearts

When Obi-Wan and Grim arrived at the Jedi Temple, Anakin was waiting for them. He knew something was wrong before they even exited the ship.

For one, it wasn't his ship.

He knew the Twilight wasn't in the best condition, but it should have been good enough for Obi-Wan to rescue his girlfriend.

When they exited the ship Anakin noticed that the duchess was not there, instead it was Grim who he thought he might have seen follow along with Master Kenobi, and both of them were injured. The Padawan seemed even more so.

"What happened?" Anakin asked them.

The two looked at him, Anakin couldn't remember the last time he had seen Obi-Wan so hurt. And Grim looked terrified. He had a feeling Satine was dead, and that more had happened on the mission.

Grim and Obi-Wan left the hanger without a word to Anakin. Seemingly lost in thoughts about whatever had occurred on the mission that had clearly gone wrong.

Obi-Wan turned to Grim. "We must speak with the Council immediately about what happened," he told her.

She bit the inside of her cheek nervously. "Shouldn't we go to the healers first?" she asked him, aware of their shared injuries.

Obi-Wan considered that for a moment. "Yes, you especially," he agreed. Knowing Grim got the worst of it.

She crossed her arms and looked up at him, giving Obi-Wan a look the Jedi Master was all too familiar with at this point. "Master, you better be going with me. I know you're injured too."

Obi-Wan sighed. The Force seemed to give him the most stubborn padawans it had to offer. "Alright Grim."

"Good, because we can tell the Council once our injuries are treated. I'm not just trying to get out of telling the Council about..." she trailed off.

"I would hope not," he replied, already knowing what she was going to say. "I wish you had told me."

"I know. I should have," sighed Grim.

The two Jedi went to the Halls of Healing where they were treated by Master Hart. Alma sighed seeing them. "Which one of you this time?" She asked.

Alma treated the two Jedi, and told them to rest for a little bit before she moved on to her other patients. Obi-Wan used the time to contact Yoda and inform him that he and Grim had to speak with the Council on a pressing matter.

Once he finished his call with Yoda he turned to Grim. "Well, before we have to speak with the Council, how did you manage to not realize you were holding the darksaber?"

"In my defense I was very stressed out," said Grim.

"So stressed out you didn't realize you were using an ancient weapon of major significance?"

"To be fair I was trapped with Darth Maul and you were gone."

"I was gone for all of ten minutes and you managed to get the darksaber."

"Then you should have kept a better eye on me, Master," she joked with a grin.

Obi-Wan shook his head. "You are impossible, Padawan."

"Why thank you, Master," she replied innocently.

When they were dismissed from the Halls of Healing, Grim and Obi-Wan made their way to speak with the Council. Obi-Wan noticed how nervous Grim looked. He wondered just how much she had been hiding from the Council if she had clearly encountered Sidious before.

When the two Jedi reached the Council Chambers, the Padawan noticed that only Masters Yoda, Windu, Mundi, Piell, and Koon were present in person. The rest of the Council, aside for Obi-Wan, were attending via hologram. Grim and Obi-Wan stood in the center of the room. The Padawan shifted her feet nervously while playing with her braid.

Master Windu addressed Obi-Wan. "So what is this important matter you and your padawan have to speak with us about, Master Kenobi?"

Obi-Wan stood tall and spoke calmly. "I must confess that I disobeyed this Council and went to Mandalore despite orders to leave the situation alone. Grim followed me, despite my own orders to stay here. While on Mandalore we encountered Darth Maul and his brother, and we also encountered Darth Sidious as well."

Windu leaned forward. "You encountered Darth Sidious?" He asked in disbelief.

Grim looked at the floor ashamed. "Yes, Master."

Obi-Wan looked at Grim, "you should be the one to tell them, not me," he told her gently.

She swallowed, and nodded. "I...for me it was not the first time I encountered Sidious," she confessed.

The Council stared at Grim in shock. They hardly knew anything about Sidious, let alone having encountered him. Now she was confessing to have encountered him not just once, but multiple times.

"You mean to say you've encountered Sidious before today, Padawan Kennet?" Plo Koon asked her.

"Twice before," she said quietly. Not meeting anybody's eyes.

"Said something about this you should have!" Yoda exclaimed.

"I know," she mumbled tearfully. "I'm sorry. I know I should have."

Obi-Wan put a hand on her shoulder, he looked at her gently. "What happened? And when did these encounters happen?" The concern in his voice was obvious.

She looked away, unable to meet his gaze. To meet anybody's gaze. Her eyes focused on the floor. Noticing details she hadn't before. Trying to keep from telling the Council anything, afraid of what they would say.

"Padawan, what happened in these encounters? How long ago were they?" Windu asked her.

She shifted nervously again. She didn't want to say anything. She shut her eyes trying to force back the images threatening to resurface. She didn't like to think about them.

The Council noticed she was upset. "Grim, concerned we all are," Yoda told her. "Tell us what happened, we need you to. Able to do that, are you?"

She nodded slowly. She took a deep breath. "I...Okay." She tried to calm herself again.

"The first time I encountered Sidious was when Master Kenobi faked his death to go undercover. I was so angry, with Obi-Wan, with the Council, with Sidious, with the whole galaxy. And I hated that there was nothing I could do. I had to do something. So...I - I decided to get proof of who Sidious is. Except..." She trailed off, her hands shaking.

She remembered how Sidious had called her name. Knowing it was her. Grim forced herself to breathe, feeling that panic come back. "Except he found me. Somehow - Somehow he already knew. When I asked him, he told me he knew for a while...I - I don't know if he was bluffing or...or if he somehow knew to some degree. We fought, and...he beat me, I only barely escaped with my life...I- I'm sorry."

The Council processed what Grim was telling them. "That's a lot you went through, but we have to ask, how much does he know about you?" Plo asked her.

Grim took a shaky breath. "By that encounter I only believe he knew that I knew he was a Sith Lord," she admitted. "He was going to kill me for it if.." She shuddered thinking about the torture she endured at his hands.

"If what? Does he know more now?" Ki-Adi asked her gently.

She nodded. "I wanted to be brave, like Master Kenobi. When he asked me how much I knew I- I was an idiot, I tried to make a remark- and - and I revealed the existence of the multiverse."

"Oh, Grim..." said Obi-Wan. He had no idea.

"I'm sorry, Master," she told him.

"So he doesn't know anything more?" Ki-Adi asked.

Grim shook her head. "No, he- he does. In the second encounter- he- he uh...he tortured me," she confessed. Tears were falling now as she remembered how it had felt. "I thought I was going to die, I thought he was going to kill me, I-'' she took another breath. "I told him," she said quietly. "I told him I'm from another universe."

The room went quiet. Nobody knew what to say. They just stared at Grim concerned for her safety. With Sidious knowing that, it was a miracle of the Force that she was able to be telling them this at all.

Grim found the silence deafening. She saw it as meaning she was in trouble. "I swear I didn't tell him anything more than what I've told you! He just knows I know the future! He doesn't know anything else! I swear! I didn't tell him anything else, I would never betray you like that!" She cried.

"We believe you, Grim," Adi told her. "But even just that information..."

"I know," she said, shaking. "I know. I'm so sorry."

"Is that why Sidious said he has uses for you?" Obi-Wan asked, worried about his Padawan. He had already had a feeling, but...

She nodded. "I- I think so. I don't know why he hasn't killed me. He would kill anyone else for what I know. He would kill others for less. I don't know why he keeps me alive. I have no idea what uses I could have for him."

"Who is he?" Windu asked. "Who is Darth Sidious?"

Grim trembled. She knew she should tell them. She couldn't find it in herself to tell them.

"Grim," Obi-Wan said. "Please, we have to know this."

"If know who Sidious is, stop him, we can," said Yoda. "Help you, we can. Alone you are not. Alone, you can not face this. A padawan you are, young Kennet. Defeat Sidious alone you can not. Dealing with Sith Lords, to the Masters it should be left to."

"Master Yoda is right, little one," Obi-Wan told her.

"You know what? Why am I the one being lectured? I'm not the one who disobeyed the Council! ...This time." Snapped Grim, trying to push the blame and spotlight onto Obi-Wan instead. To deflect the whole conversation. So afraid she just wanted to run away, while also feeling frozen in place.

"Well, you weren't supposed to go either. And I am on the Council."

"Master!" She exclaimed.

"And on a more serious note, you did fight Darth Sidious, and now you have told us that this wasn't even the first time. Which is a very important matter to discuss. You know this as well as the rest of us."

Grim crossed her arms as Obi-Wan took his seat. Leaving her standing on her own. "Wait a minute," she said, putting together what he was saying.

"Grim, this is a very serious matter, Master Kenobi is right. You can't just hide this from us," Depa told her.

"I know that," she said.

"Then tell us," Windu told her.

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"I'm scared."

"And you're allowed to be, but don't let this fear cloud your judgment."

"I know that, but..." She didn't have an excuse.

"But what?" asked Obi-Wan. "What exactly is it that you're so afraid of?"

That Sidious has planned this too.

But she couldn't say it. She just ran out of the room.

Why could she never find the courage to tell them the truth?

The Council stared after her.

Obi-Wan was worried. He had no idea Grim had ever fought Sidious before, but finally that week after he returned from his faked death last year made sense. What bothered him was the fact that she had been training for it, she had intended that second encounter.

"Something on your mind there is, Master Kenobi," Yoda noticed.

"Yes," Obi-Wan admitted. "Grim's second encounter with Sidious, I believe she intended to fight him that time."

"What makes you say that?" Ki-Adi asked.

"She said her first encounter with Sidious was during the time I was undercover. She didn't say when her second encounter was, but I think we all know that scar isn't from a training accident," he said. "Before that happened she was training a lot, it almost looked like she was preparing for something, and then one day she comes back to the Temple with a lightsaber scar, and since she has fought Sidious..." he trailed off.

"You believe she was preparing to fight him and Darth Sidious caught her off guard?" Windu asked.

"Yes," he replied. "And I think there's a lot more she's not telling us."

"Agree I do, but up to your Padawan to tell us, it is," said Yoda, voicing what they all knew.

"I just wish she would," said Obi-Wan.
