Chapter 26: Death In The Night
"Master, where are you going?"
Obi-Wan was leaving the Jedi Temple. Grim could feel his worry. What had unsettled her Master and why was he leaving the Jedi Temple?
He stopped for a moment and looked at his Padawan. He could tell she was concerned about him. "I have to deal with something on my own, you're not to follow me," he told her.
Grim crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "Last time you said that Darth Maul returned, and you got tortured by him."
"Correct me if I'm wrong, Grim, but did that not also happen to you because you didn't listen to me?" Obi-Wan retorted.
Grim opened her mouth to speak and then shut it again. He wasn't wrong. "Okay, that's on me. Still can I at least know where you're going so I can warn you in case you're walking into a trap?"
Obi-Wan sighed. She was always so stubborn. He supposed he was going to have to tell Anakin anyway, as he needed to borrow his ship. Grim would probably just ask Anakin, and still find a way to follow him. Maybe if he told her she wouldn't be as reckless. "Duchess Satine is in trouble-"
"That settles it, I'm going with you," Grim said before Obi-Wan even finished.
Well, all things considered, he should have expected that response.
"Grim no," he told her. "I must go alone, I'm already disobeying the Council by doing this. I am not bringing you with me."
"You're right, you're not. I'm still going though, and you can't stop me," replied Grim.
"No Grim," he told her again. He crossed his arms, and looked at her sternly. He hoped she would back down about this. Sometimes she could be just as bad as Anakin.
Grim could tell Obi-Wan wasn't going to let her go with him. She sighed and faked her defeat, "very well then Master, but I must warn you, you're walking into a trap."
Obi-Wan considered that for a moment. "Why would Death Watch set a trap for me?"
"It's not Death Watch."
"Then who?" He knew he had many enemies, but how many enemies did he happen to have on Mandalore?
"Darth Maul."
"I see," said Obi-Wan after a long moment.
Why would he even be on Mandalore? He had a feeling his Padawan wouldn't tell him, she seemed to shy away whenever a subject turned to the Sith. Which could get very frustrating as he knew she was withholding information from the Council that could be vital to both winning the war and defeating the Sith.
"Be careful, Master," she told him. Her voice quiet.
Obi-Wan gave Grim a gentle smile. "I will be."
He continued on and Grim waited a moment before she began to follow after him. She snuck into the ship before Obi-Wan had even finished talking with Anakin.
Grim had hoped to avoid being spotted by him until they had landed on the planet, but during the flight Obi-Wan had noticed his Padawan.
"Grim!" he exclaimed. "Stop sneaking along on missions I am going on alone!" Why wouldn't she stop doing that?
She huffed and crossed her arms. "Then stop falling for Smaul's traps." She retorted as she walked over to the co-pilot seat next to him.
He sighed and shook his head. There was nothing he could do about it now. "Well, I wasn't expecting my padawan to stowaway on my mission. I don't have a disguise for you, meaning you will have to stay with the ship."
"Your unsanctioned mission," she corrected, as she gave him a smug smile. "Neither of us are supposed to be here." She was having too much fun with the idea of Obi-Wan disobeying the Council instead of her or Anakin.
"It seems you and Anakin have become a bad influence on me," he commented.
"I won't tell the Council if you won't?"
"Grim, I am on the Council."
"I won't tell the rest of the Council."
Obi-Wan sighed and Grim gave him a huge toothy grin. The Jedi Master just shook his head, unable to suppress his smile.
However the moment the two Jedi entered the atmosphere of Mandalore their moods shifted, and the lighthearted playfulness of their banter had died away. They had a mission, and a life depended on them. Both Jedi knew this.
As Obi-Wan landed the ship he turned to his padawan, she had not thought to disguise herself. "Stay here," he told her.
"Why? I've already followed you this far," she asked.
"Because you don't have a disguise," he pointed out.
"You don't have much of one either," remarked Grim, making a face of disgust at his outfit. He was wearing the same armor he had worn when he had been undercover as Hardeen.
Before Obi-Wan could retort, one of the panels of the ship sparked and caught fire for just one moment. It was extinguished automatically. "This is the last time I borrow a ship from Anakin," Obi-Wan commented.
Grim chuckled.
The Jedi Master put on the helmet that came with his outfit, "stay with the ship, Padawan."
"Alright, fine, " said Grim.
Obi-Wan left the ship and then returned a moment later with a mandalorian following behind him. He knocked the mandalorian out and stole his armor.
"Now can I follow you? I can take your horrendous outfit from before," Grim suggested.
"Just stay with the ship," Obi-Wan told her. "Besides, I don't think it would fit you." And if this had been a trap set by Maul, he really didn't want Grim to start a fight with a Sith Lord. Again.
Grim knew he was right, and so she said nothing. She only sighed heavily and grumbled. But she refused to be defeated. When Obi-Wan left again Grim waited a little longer before she followed him a second time.
The padawan was stopped by a mandalorian guard very quickly. She supposed Obi-Wan was right, she didn't have a disguise. But she was about to.
Becoming very aware of her surroundings Grim lured the mandalorian out of sight before knocking them out and stealing their armor. She put on the helmet and set off after Obi-Wan.
Grim reached the prison far later than Obi-Wan had. When she was about to exit the elevator he was already with Satine. She quickly took off her helmet. "Hello there," she said with a smug smile. Grim would never admit how long she was waiting to say that to him.
Obi-Wan and Satine let out a sigh of relief and entered the elevator with her. Obi-Wan turned his head to Grim, who had put her helmet back on. "I thought I told you to stay with the ship," he commented.
Grim shrugged. "Because I didn't have a disguise, so I got one."
Obi-Wan shook his head. "You are impossibly stubborn."
"Did you not already know that?" she joked. "How long have I been your student now?"
Obi-Wan chuckled and shook his head again.
Satine smiled at the interaction between the two Jedi.
When they reached the exit, Grim and Obi-Wan took off their helmets. Obi-Wan and Satine got on one speederbike and Grim took the other.
A mandalorian spotted them, "Hey!" he called.
The three of them quickly sped off being pursued by mandalorians.
As they reached the platform with the ship the mandalorians began to fire at them. Obi-Wan pulled out a blaster and began to shoot back at them. Grim pulled out her lightsaber and deflected the shots from the mandalorians back at them.
The two Jedi covered Satine as they retreated back into the ship. As the ramp closed behind them the three rushed to the cockpit. Obi-Wan took the pilot's seat and Satine took the co-pilot's seat while Grim held onto the chairs and stood between the two.
"We need to contact my sister for help. She'll send reinforcements," said Satine.
"Who's your sister?" Obi-Wan asked.
The ship began to lift off, but it was hardly off the landing platform when they were hit.
"Brace yourselves!" shouted Grim as the ship began to crash.
The ship was sparking and alarms were beeping and going off. "Let's get out of here!" said Obi-Wan. He grabbed Satine's hand and began to lead her to the exit ramp, Grim following behind the two of them.
Obi-Wan began running down the ramp.
"Obi-Wan!" Satine cried. She had lost her grip and almost fell out of the ship.
Obi-Wan caught her but was almost out of the ship as well, grabbing onto one of the ramps supports to keep them from flying out.
Grim tried to grab the two of them with the Force, but Obi-Wan had lost his grip and was already falling.
Before the Padawan could react she had to jump out of the ship before it exploded. She hadn't even reached the ground when it did.
She hit the ground and bit back a grunt, trying to force herself to not make any movement. Her armor had protected her from taking too much damage from both the crash and the explosion she had narrowly escaped.
Grim had the idea of pretending to be dead to protect herself from Maul and avoid capture. That way she had a better chance to rescue Obi-Wan and Satine.
She watched through strands of fallen hair as Obi-Wan stood up, so very injured and ignited his lightsaber.
He didn't stand a chance. Maul grabbed Obi-Wan with the Force and pulled him towards him, gripping the Jedi's neck and causing him to drop his lightsaber. "We meet again, Kenobi," Maul purred. "Welcome to my world."
He threw Obi-Wan at a pair of mandalorians, before surveying the area a moment longer. The Padawan didn't notice, but his eyes had fallen on Grim's body.
As the Sith walked over to her, Grim felt a shiver run up her spine and her heart pound in her chest. He had seen past her trick.
The cold metal of a lightsaber hilt slipped under her chin and Grim was forced to look up, as she found herself face to face with Darth Maul.
Staring into his cruel eyes.
"Would you look at what we have here? It seems where you find Kenobi, his apprentice is sure to follow," he commented softly.
Grim glared at him. Her eyes burning with the fires of determination and defiance.
She didn't break eye contact with him as she spat in his face. Showing clearly that she would not allow herself to be scared of the Sith Lord and would stand up to him.
Maul grabbed her by her hair and pulled her upwards, forcing the padawan to stand. His lightsaber still under her chin. Threatening to end her life at a moment's notice. "That was a mistake," he told her.
He kneed her in the stomach and Grim buckled over falling to her knees before the Sith. She coughed and groaned as Maul reached over and took her lightsaber away. "I'll be keeping that." He turned to address the Mandalorians who waited on his orders. "Take her back to the palace with the duchess and Kenobi," he commanded.
As the three prisoners were taken to the palace, Grim was only somewhat aware of her surroundings. She found it hard to focus on anything or make an escape plan with the pain in her stomach from where Maul had hit her. She felt like she might get sick.
At the palace Grim and Satine had been forced to their knees at either side of the throne in which Maul sat with Obi-Wan in front of them. It was in this position they were at now as Maul looked between Kenobi, his padawan, and the duchess, a smile creeping upon his lips.
Then he let out a laugh. "Oh this is too good. Kenobi's padawan is his daughter, and his precious duchess is the mother."
The three shared a confused glance. Why would Maul think that?
The Sith noted the confusion on Obi-Wan's face and laughed some more. "Oh, did you not realize?" Using the force Maul lifted Grim and Satine by their necks and had them hover over the ground side by side before the Jedi Master. "How about you take a closer look?"
Even knowing that she clearly was not the daughter of Obi-Wan and Satine, the padawan found herself looking between her master and the duchess to see why Maul came to such a conclusion.
Her dirty reddish-blonde hair certainly did look like a mix of Satine's far lighter hair and Obi-Wan's auburn. Both Grim and Obi-Wan's faces were dusted with freckles, although Grim's were more visible. Grim really did look like a blend of the two.
She did look like the daughter of the duchess and the Jedi.
Maul laughed again. "But it does not matter, does it?" He asked softly.
The Sith approached Obi-Wan still choking the two women, keeping them suspended as Obi-Wan was forced to watch. "You should've chosen the dark side, Master Jedi. Your emotions betray you. Your fear, and yes, your anger. Let your anger deepen your hatred."
"Don't listen to him Obi-" Satine gasped.
"Master, don't listen to him-" Grim gasped out at the same time.
"Quiet," Savage told the two. Maul put a hand up to silence him.
"You can kill me, but you will never destroy me," Obi-Wan told Maul. "It takes strength to resist the dark side. Only the weak embrace it!"
Is he trying to get us all killed? Grim couldn't help but wonder.
"It is more powerful than you know," Maul told Obi-Wan.
"And those who oppose it are more powerful than you'll ever be," Obi-Wan retorted. As much as Grim admired and looked up to her Master she couldn't help but feel like this wasn't the time. Obi-Wan continued, "I know where you're from. I've been to your village. I know the decision to join the dark side wasn't yours. The Nightsisters made it for you."
"Silence!" Maul demanded. "You think you know me? It was I who languished for years thinking of nothing but you. Nothing but this moment. And now the perfect tool for my vengeance is in front of us."
He dropped Grim, and took out the darksaber as he walked over to Satine. The padawan's eyes widened in fear at the same time Obi-Wan's did. Both recognizing what was about to happen. Maul went on, seeming to relish in the fear of the two Jedi. "I never planned on killing you. But I will make you share my pain, Kenobi."
He ignited the darksaber.
Obi-Wan started to reach for Satine but the mandalorians behind him beat him down onto his hands and knees.
Grim only managed to get out a "NO!".
It was too late.
Maul stabbed Satine with the darksaber and dropped her on the ground in front of Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan ran to her. "Satine!" he gasped softly.
Overwhelmed by the moment, Grim grabbed Maul with the Force and threw him into the throne.
She made a run to the Jedi and the dying duchess but Savage grabbed her by her hair and yanked her back. Grim yelped in pain and surprise. He threw her back beside the throne.
Grim was only able to watch Obi-Wan and Satine's last interaction. She couldn't even make out the words, and her vision had been blurred through her tears.
"Do we kill him now, brother?" Savage asked Maul.
"No. Imprison him below. Let him drown in his misery. Take him to his cell to rot." Maul replied.
The mandalorians lifted Obi-Wan up, but before they took him away from the palace, Maul spoke again. "Oh and Kenobi. There is no need to worry about your precious padawan...I won't kill her, but I promise you...you will know that she is suffering."
Grim looked at Maul with fearful wide and wild eyes. Terrified for what torture the Sith might have planned for her.
When she caught Obi-Wan looking at her he also seemed afraid, but when his eyes found Maul the look was one of pure unmasked rage.
Grim didn't know what she feared more for that brief moment. She had never seen Obi-Wan so angry. Not even on the screen.
When Obi-Wan was escorted away, Grim found herself alone in the palace with two Sith Lords and the threat of torture looming over her.
She was terrifed, she didn't know how much torture she would be able to withstand, even if the sole purpose of it was to torture Obi-Wan. She had broken from torture before. And she had seen his anger at the threat followed so closely by the murder of Satine, she was afraid of how he would react when it was followed through.
For Grim knew that it had not been an empty one.
In this siege of panic, she knew only one other thing: she had to escape.
Maul had stood from his throne and was now approaching the cowering Padawan. She had not even realized she had been doing so in a pointless bid to defend herself.
As the Sith Lord grew closer Grim noticed something else-
Something that might give her a fighting chance.
The darksaber.
Or - for Grim - who was so wrapped in her fear to even recognize the special type of lightsaber and its significance -
A weapon.
She reached out with the Force and summoned it to her hand, igniting the ancient blade.
Grim quickly stood up, and prepared to fight against the Sith, who had now both ignited their own red lightsabers.
And so Grim battled the two Sith brothers.
Despite having been the one who initiated the fight she had quickly been forced into defense. Not that this hindered her combat abilities, like her master Grim favored the Soresu form, which specializes in defense.
Still, the two Sith overwhelmed the young padawan. Deactivating the darksaber Grim quickly clipped it to the belt and activated the jetpack from the armor she had stolen.
"Woah!" she exclaimed as she began to hover over the ground.
Unsteadily she flew through one of the palace's windows, shattering the glass. Only she quickly lost her balance and began to fall to the ground outside.
Finding herself tumbling into none other than Darth Sidious.
They both crashed into the ground. She jumped and saw just who she had crashed landed into and her eyes widened in fear. "Oh fuck!" she shouted as she realized her mistake. Not bothering to use the correct universe's language.
Sidious got up and glared at the padawan. "Kennet, I wasn't expecting to find you here..."
Grim unclipped the darksaber and reignited it. "Yeah, well too bad Palpabitch," she commented.
He was momentarily surprised by the fact the young Padawan wielded the weapon, and wondered for only a second on how she had acquired it, but quickly dismissed the thought. He hadn't let his surprise show either, and even if it had in her panicked and angered state the Padawan would not have noticed.
The Sith however, was not in the mood to deal with the child's games. "Yes it is," he agreed with her.
Before Grim could even process the threat in his words he hit her with Force Lightning sending the young padawan away from him. Grim shouted out in pain, and had to quickly activate her jetpack again before she fell to her death.
"This is what I get for being Obi-Wan's padawan," she muttered under her breath. She quickly began to fly over to rescue Obi-Wan, now with a better handle on how to use the jetpack.
When she arrived she found that Bo-Katan and her allies had already arrived. She landed near them, and all heads turned to her as she still had the darksaber. Its black and white blade stood out clearly.
"Grim," Obi-Wan sighed, relieved. "Are you alright?" He asked her, trying his best to not let his surprise that his padawan held the darksaber show.
"Could be better," she replied with a casual shrug. She deactivated the darksaber and clipped it back to the belt. "Are you?"
"I am, thanks to..." he turned to Bo-Katan. "I'm sorry I don't believe I caught your name."
"Bo-Katan. I came to rescue you. That's all you need to know," she told him, handing him his lightsaber. She turned to Grim and raised an eyebrow at her. "How'd you manage to steal the darksaber from Maul?"
"I what?" Grim asked. She looked down and saw she had the darksaber. "Oh. I didn't realize."
"You didn't realize you had the darksaber?" Obi-Wan asked Grim, dumbfounded.
"Clearly not," replied Grim.
"You were using it," Bo-Katan pointed out.
"So I was, as I wouldn't have been able to escape Maul and Savage..." Grim trailed off as she remembered that Sidious would kill Savage and capture Maul. Although the two were Sith, she supposed the enemy of her enemy was her friend. Even if the two had been about to torture her.
"Does anyone know where my actual lightsaber is?" she asked. Bo-Katan found it on the mandalorian that had had Obi-Wan's lightsaber and gave it to Grim. "Thanks!" she said.
Then before anyone could say anything more about her having the darksaber she flew back off to the palace.
Obi-Wan and Bo-Katan stared after her. "What in the blazes is she doing?" Obi-Wan asked nobody in particular. He put back on the jetpack Bo-Katan had returned and chased after his Padawan before she did something stupid, and reckless, that would get her killed.
"Jetiise," Bo-Katan muttered before she and the rest of the rebel group flew after the two.
When Grim arrived at the palace again she noticed Sidious about to hit Maul with Force Lightning. Without thinking, Grim dropped down and took the hit for Maul.
The force of the blow caused Grim to be knocked to the ground as the lightning coursed through her body. She was barely aware of her own screams.
Suddenly the pain stopped. After all, she had not been the target of the attack. Sidious growled, scowling at the foolish child.
Grim slowly stood up, glaring at Darth Sidious. She ignited her lightsaber, casting the area in a purple glow. "Surprised, Hideous?" she asked, taunting the Sith Lord. She ignited the darksaber as well. "I wasn't going to let you hurt anyone else."
Maul looked at the child in surprise. "What are you doing here?" He hissed.
She looked behind her, "saving you, what else?"
"Being a meddling fool, yet again," replied Sidious, as he reignited his own lightsabers.
"Again?" Maul caught on. He looked at the padawan with even more surprise, "have you-"
"Not the time Smaul," Grim said through gritted teeth. She threw the darksaber at Maul and the Sith caught it. "If you can still fight, help me take down Hideous, if not, then leave," she told him.
Maul looked at her offended and angry. "Your Master once cut me in half and yet I still fight, I won't allow a child to take my revenge from me," he retorted.
"Great!" replied Grim, far too cheerful for the situation. She stood next to Maul, and got into the opening stance of Soresu. "Then we'll take him together."
Maul ignited his regular red lightsaber, wielding it alongside the darksaber. "So we shall," he agreed.
Sidious smirked under the hood of his cloak. The two of them were fools, alas they were fools he needed alive. They were of use to him.
In the distance he noticed an approaching figure...and his smirk grew.
Sidious made the first move.
He flew towards the padawan and former Sith. Launching himself at the pair, moving with the speed of a far younger man.
Grim brought up her lightsaber and caught his right blade with her own. Although the attack caused her to be pushed back ever slightly.
Maul swung at him with the darksaber at Sidious' left and the Sith expertly dodged countering with his own.
Maul pushed against Sidious' attack but it hardly did anything to the Sith Master.
Grim ran at Sidious, leaping up to attack him.
He gracefully stepped to the side, easily dodging her attack.
Grim fell on her face and her lightsaber clattered out of her hand.
Maul charged at Sidious.
The Sith lazily struck him with Force lightning and he flew into a wall.
"Maul!" Grim screamed.
She started to stand, but she found a red lightsaber at her neck.
Sidious stood in front of her. His weapon dangerously close to her. One step closer and she would be dead.
Kenobi was in earshot now. Perfect.
"Well, isn't this familiar, Padawan Kennet?" he taunted. "Just you and me, nobody to save you, and this time you won't escape."
There was the sound of feet hitting the ground. Followed by the sound of a lightsaber igniting. A blue glow illuminated the area.
"Are you so certain?" asked Obi-Wan.
Sidious looked up at the Jedi Master, although hidden with the hood of his cloak he gave the Jedi a grin. "Master Kenobi, I'm glad you could join us."
Obi-Wan used the Force and pushed Sidious away from his Padawan. He helped Grim up and handed her her lightsaber. "Are you okay, Grim?" He asked her.
"I've had worse encounters," she replied.
Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow. He had overheard the Sith implying that this was not the first time he and his Padawan had fought, and now Grim was implying the same thing. It concerned him.
Before he could say anything about this, however. Sidious charged towards the Master-Padawan duo.
Together they raised their lightsabers and blocked his attack. The Sith Lord battled the two Jedi.
They were no match to his power.
Obi-Wan Kenobi was quite possibly the master of Soresu, and his abilities in the Force were great.
Grim Kennet had huge potential in the Force and an incredible power that was still untapped, and she was quite impressive in her Master's form as well.
Yet still, the two Jedi were no match for Darth Sidious. He was stronger, and more advanced than them. And both the Jedi were injured, the Padawan far more so.
Grim recognized the situation. This was not her first battle against Sidious. As he pushed the two back and easily overwhelmed them, she saw the need for retreat.
She leaped back, going for some higher ground, and trying to buy herself a moment to observe an escape route.
Sidious shot Force Lightning at the padawan, it almost hit her but Obi-Wan absorbed the blow with his lightsaber. The Sith then used the Force and began to choke the Jedi Master.
"Obi-Wan!" Grim shouted.
She ran at Sidious and he threw Obi-Wan back before hitting Grim with Force Lightning. The blow sent her flying back to Obi-Wan, as she screamed in pain.
Sidious then lifted up both Jedi with the Force, choking them. "You've lost, but don't worry Master Kenobi, I won't kill your padawan..." he trailed off and paused for dramatic effect. Relishing in the Jedi Master's horrified expression. "She has uses to me." Obi-Wan's eyes widened. Having a feeling that there was only one thing his Padawan had that could have use to the Sith Lord. "You on the other hand..."
Sidious was about to kill him when suddenly blaster fire was heading towards the Sith Lord, and he had to drop the two Jedi to defend himself.
Bo-Katan and her rebels had come to the Jedi's rescue!
She ran to the Jedi and helped them up. "Can you still use your jetpacks?" she asked them.
"I believe so," Grim told her.
"Good," Bo-Katan replied. "Follow me."
The two Jedi followed the mandalorian with the others behind them escorting the Jedi to a ship they could use to escape Mandalore.
Grim's heart pounded in her chest, and through the fog of her thoughts she was keenly aware of one thing:
Obi-Wan knows I've fought Sidious before. He knows that Sidious knows about me.
Obi-Wan and Grim placed down the helmets on a shelf, as they sat down in the seats of the ship Bo-Katan had lent the two Jedi.
"That Sith...he was more powerful than Dooku..." Obi-Wan breathed as he tried to wrap his head over everything that had happened. He looked at Grim. "Was that...?"
"That was Sidious," she confirmed, looking at him through unshed tears.
"Sidious?" He asked. Then this was far more serious than he had realized. And if Grim had encountered Sidious prior to this..."You know we're going to have to talk to the Council about this. Especially because of Sidious' involvement."
Grim lowered her head. "I know," she said quietly. There was no avoiding it now.
