Chapter 25: Regrets
Since Darth Maul's return he had begun wreaking havoc on the galaxy as he and his brother murdered and pillaged villages and more. Jedi Masters Adi Galia and Obi-Wan Kenobi were going to investigate one of these recent attacks. Having overheard some discussion about it, Grim ran over to the two Jedi. "Master, let me go with you," Grim said to Obi-Wan.
"If it really is them it would be dangerous for you to come along," Obi-Wan told her.
"Master, would it truly be any more dangerous than any of the battles I've fought in?" Grim asked him.
"Master Kenobi has a point, Sith are not the same battle droids," said Adi agreeing with Obi-Wan.
Subconsciously a hand found the scar on her face, "Yeah I know that," she whispered quietly. She realized what she was doing and lowered her hand. "Still, I would be with the two of you, wouldn't I?" Grim asked. Her gaze flickered to Adi and stayed there, "besides, there's something I want to change."
Both of the Jedi Masters were concerned by this. Would something happen? "You have got to stop being so vague and ominous, Grim," Obi-Wan sighed.
Grim grinned innocently, "why should I? It's part of the appeal."
Obi-Wan shook his head with a small smile as Grim laughed, Adi chuckled a little as well.
They were on their way to the source of the distress call, and had just dropped out of hyperspace. "The distress signal is coming from here, the Meridian sector, Cybloc system," said Obi-Wan.
"It is close enough to the earlier attack," Adi pointed out.
"I have a feeling it's them," said Obi-Wan.
"Your feeling is correct," said Grim.
"And you didn't mention it before?" Obi-Wan asked her.
She shrugged.
"You're going to be the death of me."
"I'm not going to be the death of you, that'll be someone else," Grim replied casually.
"WHAT?" Obi-Wan asked, completely shocked by her response. Grim saw nothing wrong with what she said and did not reply. "Grim, what do you mean by that??"
"Oh don't worry about it, Master, you still have twenty or so years before you're killed, I already told you this."
"Before I'm what????"
"Are you really that surprised?" Grim asked him. "Besides only if I can't change the ending, otherwise I have no clue as to how you'll die. Anyways, don't we have a distress call to answer?"
They did, and so they flew to the source of the call. The person who made the call showed the Jedi to the scene and explained. "They ought to be flush. Chips were all unlocked. No way to trace 'em. All done by the two crabbiest zabraks you've this side of the Hydian."
"They were alone?" Obi-Wan asked, placing one hand on his hip.
"Yup, yup. What were they, couple of Jedi gone rogue or something?"
The three Jedi looked at each other. Grim was the one who spoke, her arms crossed. "They're not Jedi, never even have been."
"Do me a favor, spark up that lightsaber, will you?" Grim ignited her lightsaber, showing it to him. She then deactivated the weapon and clipped it back to her belt. "Mmm-hmm. Well the droids that got attacked said that theirs were red."
"That's because they're Sith, and we need to find them," explained Grim.
"Yes, we should stop them before they strike again," agreed Obi-Wan.
"Well, they took my cargo ship. The droid survivor said they heard something about the Sertar sector."
The three Jedi began to walk back to their own ship, as Obi-Wan stroked his beard in thought.
"What is in the Sertar sector?" Adi asked him.
"That's where Florrum is," explained Obi-Wan.
"You've been there?" Adi asked Obi-Wan. "What can we expect?"
"Pirates," Obi-Wan replied. Grim grinned at the idea. He looked at her, "don't get any ideas."
The three Jedi made their way to Florrum, when they exited hyperspace they saw the cargo ship and three pirate ships. "We have a match on the cargo ship," said Adi.
"It seems Maul and Savage have picked up a pirate escort," noted Obi-Wan.
"Maybe to unload the stolen cargo," suggested Adi.
"I'm not sure the pirate Hondo would have an alliance with Maul and his brother," said Obi-Wan.
"So you know this Hondo personally?" Adi asked him.
"Unfortunately, yes," replied Obi-Wan. He then called Hondo, after a moment he picked up. "Greetings Hondo."
"Greetings?" Hondo asked. "What kind of menace have you brought to my planet now?"
"It wasn't our doing," Grim told Hondo.
"Ah! Little Kenobi is here as well!" Hondo exclaimed happily. Grim sighed at the name.
"Little Kenobi?" Obi-Wan asked, confused.
"She's your padawan isn't she? And she acts like you sometimes too Kenobi," Hondo explained. "But that isn't the point, the point is the trouble you brought to my planet this time."
"Again it wasn't us," Grim corrected.
"Fine! But can you at least tell me who these horny-headed maniacs are?" Hondo asked. "They don't seem like normal Jedi."
"Because they aren't Jedi. Why does everyone think they're Jedi? They're Sith," Grim answered.
"We tracked them here," Obi-Wan explained.
"They just threatened to attack with a group of my men. My own men!"
"Yes, we are looking at them right now," said Obi-Wan. "A cargo vessel and three of your starships. They're heading towards you, Hondo."
"Da-da-da, more to the point, are you going to help me when you get here?"
"There's nothing we can do about your men, but we can certainly do something about the Sith," said Obi-Wan.
"Good. I'll deal with my men. You deal with those tattooed crazies."
"Right," said Obi-Wan.
The call ended, and the three Jedi made their way onto the planet. When they landed a battle was already ensuing. Maul and Savage were behind them and the three Jedi turned around as the Sith ignited their lightsabers.
"Throwing in with pirates now? Oh how the mighty Sith have fallen," remarked Obi-Wan, as he ignited his lightsaber. Grim and Adi ignited their own.
Maul ran at the three Jedi who all blocked his attack. Savage turned his attention on Adi with Maul's on Kenobi. Grim stayed close to Adi and fought Savage with the Jedi Master. The Sith using one side of his saberstastaff for each Jedi.
The three Jedi jumped off the cliff and the Sith chased after them, as Grim and Adi continued to fight Savage while Kenobi dealt with Maul. All around them the pirates battled.
As Grim and Adi continued to battle Savage, Adi kicked him in the leg but it did nothing to the Sith. He only looked down at the Jedi Master. He used the Force to shove her against some rubble and as he began to charge at Adi, Grim used the Force to shove him to the side saving the Jedi Master.
Savage turned his attention to Grim who ran at her as he twirled his lightsaber.
"Oh shit," said Grim as she realized she angered a Sith Lord.
The Sith ran at her and Grim could only barely move out of the way to not be killed. However the Sith had hit his mark.
Grim's shoulder burned once. Then twice.
She couldn't stop the scream that escaped her. She grabbed her shoulder and stumbled back a little in the pure shock of it all.
Obi-Wan heard Grim's scream and saw what had happened. "No!" he cried. He leapt off the rubble he was fighting Maul atop of and kicked Savage in the face, jumping down with his lightsaber still blazing and humming.
He almost killed Savage but Maul went to his brother's rescue.
Adi had her lightsaber ignited again, and stood by Obi-Wan as the Sith brother battled the two Jedi.
Grim switched her lightsaber to her uninjured arm and turned it into a reverse grip. She wasn't going to let her new injury stop her, she could still fight. She joined Obi-Wan and Adi as the three Jedi battled the two Sith. With the Jedi Masters trying to keep Grim from fighting much more.
The two Sith were pushing the three Jedi back, and it seems the warring faction of pirates were having the same problems on Hondo's side. He called to the Jedi. "Kenobi, this way!"
The three Jedi followed Hondo and his gang of pirates. When they caught up to Hondo not many of his men were with him. "Where are the rest of your men?" Obi-Wan asked.
"They are setting up an ambush. We could use your help," Hondo replied. He noticed the newest injury on the padawan. "What happened to you, Little Kenobi?" He asked her concerned.
"I angered a Sith," she replied. "But I'll be fine, I can still fight."
"Not that well in your condition," Hondo replied.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Hondo," said Obi-Wan.
"As do I," said Adi.
They overheard voices as the pirates and Sith searched for them. "Master Galia and I will lead the brothers away, Grim you are to stay with Hondo, I don't want you in a fight with Sith in your condition."
"Master-" Grim started.
"There's no time to argue," replied Obi-Wan. "Once we've led the Sith away, I want you to blast that passageway closed," he told Hondo.
"And you alone with the two crazies? Well, okay."
"Hondo!" exclaimed Grim.
"What? It's better if it's them and not us." Shrugged Hondo.
Obi-Wan and Adi rolled their eyes.
Maul and the pirates found them.
"Retreat!" Ordered Hondo.
They all began to retreat as Obi-Wan and Adi went down one hallway. Once the Sith followed them Hondo blasted the passageway close just like Obi-Wan instructed. They led the pirates right into the ambush Hondo had set up with his men.
"They promised us wealth and power, boss. Please, don't kill us, we beg of you" one pirate begged Hondo.
Grim looked uncomfortable by the whole situation, but spoke up. She hoped to cause a peaceful resolution to the infighting of the pirates. "Sith never keep their words. They are selfish and would have kept it all for themselves, not much unlike you would've. They would have betrayed you too if you had kept going, but you don't have to. Besides, their ship is full of stolen goods y'all could steal back from them."
"Little Kenobi is right! And as your restored leader I say we celebrate our reunification! To the landing pad!" Agreed Hondo. The pirates cheered and began to head to the landing pad. Grim waited a moment before smiling and joining them.
When they entered the sunlight again the Sith were also there. "Jiro! Ready the men, we're leaving!" ordered Maul.
Hondo appeared. "My men aren't going anywhere with you," he told Maul. He addressed his men. "Look at them. How powerful can they be? They are running away from Kenobi!"
"Filth, you will pay for your insolence," Maul threatened.
"Insolence!" exclaimed Hondo while laughing. "We are pirates! We don't even know what that means. Open fire!" The pirates began shooting at the Sith. "If we kill those two, their riches will be ours!"
"What did I just get myself into?" Grim asked nobody but herself. She sighed heavily and ignited her lightsaber going to fight the Sith.
Surprisingly, Hondo stopped her. "No, Little Kenobi. This is far too dangerous for you."
"Y- you're SHOOTING at SITH, do you even realize how fucking STUPID that is??" Grim protested.
Hondo shrugged, and continued to shoot at the Sith. Chasing after them.
Obi-Wan and Adi ran out and also chased after the Sith. Grim was left standing there watching the chaos ensue.
As the cargo ship fell from the sky Grim joined Hondo and the Jedi Masters in watching. "Well Jedi, let's go see what riches have fallen from the sky for me and you."
"Very well," said Obi-Wan.
The Jedi and pirates arrived at the crash site where there was no sign of Maul or his brother.
"There's no sign of them, boss," one of the pirates called to Hondo.
"Well, if the conditions of these goods are any indication, ah, your friends have been vaporized," Hondo told the Jedi.
"I wouldn't be so sure," replied Obi-Wan. "I cut one of them in half once and he survived "
"Well, isn't that interesting," replied Hondo.
Still the Jedi were wary of the Sith.
Despite her latest injury Grim has insisted on going with Obi-Wan to discuss the matter of Darth Maul with Chancellor Palpatine. Obi-Wan had protested against it, due to the lightsaber wounds that she had received in her fight with Savage. However, as stubborn as she was, Grim would not listen. She was only allowed to go however if she went to the Halls of Healing directly after.
Now she sat in the waiting area of Palpatine's office in between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Also present were Masters Yoda, Windu, and Galia.
Grim watched Palpatine with thinly veiled anger mixed with some fear. Everyone there could sense this from the young padawan, although the true reasons behind these emotions were only known to Grim and the hidden Sith Lord.
"I think we have closure on this matter, Master Kenobi," Palpatine was saying.
"I disagree, Chancellor," replied Obi-Wan. "Everything we've learned from this is that the Sith are persistent. They will not die."
Grim bit the inside of her cheek, stopping a comment from slipping out. Something that would expose both herself and the hidden Sith. Afraid of what Sidious' reaction would be.
"I understand your reservations, Master Kenobi, but I am afraid we can no longer allow this personal matter of yours to be a Republic concern," Palpatine replied. "It does not appear this Darth Maul is a direct threat to the Republic. We need to redirect your efforts to the cause at hand: stopping Count Dooku and thus ending the Clone Wars."
Grim couldn't stop herself from laughing - not a true laugh, it wasn't a joyful one, this laugh was laced with anger.
Palpatine stopped and turned to look at the Padawan. Acknowledging her for the first time. "Is there something you want to say, Padawan Kennet?" He asked her.
Grim forced herself to smile at him. "Oh no, I'm sorry Chancellor," she said politely. She hoped she wasn't overdoing it.
He looked at her for a moment longer. Grim found her hand subconsciously touching the scar on her face, the one that he had given her.
It was only for a moment.
Obi-Wan spoke again, breaking the unknown tension between his padawan and the Sith. "Maul was trying to build an army of pirates."
Palpatine looked at Obi-Wan again. "So let him," he said. He began to pace again. "Let him play with the rabble. They're just petty crooks. It is of no relevance to the Senate compared to the Separatist threat."
"No, but it is of relevance to you," Grim whispered. Nobody heard.
"Good day," he said, leaving to his office.
The Jedi stood up gathering in a circle. "Something is stirring in the underworld. The crime families have had too much free rein since the Jedi have been distracted by the Clone War. I fear it is a fertile place for Maul to flourish, if he has indeed survived."
"Your fears are on good basis, and I believe he has survived. Him and his brother both," said Grim. Careful on how she worded her response, Anakin was there and he didn't know like the others did.
"Hmm, right you may be, but heed the words of the Chancellor we must," replied Yoda. "A personal matter, this is for you, Master Kenobi."
Grim scoffed. "With all due respect Master Yoda, this is going to grow to be far more than personal."
Yoda looked at the young Padawan. "In time, reveal himself, Maul will. And then swiftly we shall act."
Grim nodded.
As the Jedi left to go back to the Temple, Grim found herself hesitating for just a moment.
The other Jedi had left. Grim turned to look behind her, the door to the Chancellor's office was open. Palpatine sat at his desk grinning at the news the Jedi had given him.
Grim turned her back to him to leave.
"Your Master is right, the Sith are persistent," said Palpatine.
"So am I, Sidious," replied Grim.
