Chapter 24: Stolen Moments

Onderon had been taken over by the Separatists under the rule of a new king. A small band of rebels had been fighting back against the droid army, but they needed help.

Currently, Grim, Anakin, and Ahsoka stood in the Council Chambers while Lux and Saw addressed the Jedi. Lux was speaking, "Unfortunately, the only way to reclaim Onderon will be through armed struggle. But we lack sufficient hardware and supplies."

"Onderon is in your king's rule and at the outbreak of the Clone War he chose to align with the Separatists," Obi-Wan replied.

"Our true king has been silenced," Saw argued. "The one you recognize is a traitor and a Separatist minion. We need your help to survive this."

"Find a way we shall," Yoda promised.

"We await your answer, " Lux replied. With that the transmission ended.

"There are pockets of rebels on many of these planets that just need guidance. With training and resources they could attack soft targets while the Republic continues to engage them on the battlefield," Anakin proposed.

"That sounds like terrorism, Anakin," argued Obi-Wan.

"Well, I think of it more as an insurgency to help realign these planets with the Republic," Anakin argued back.

"We can divide the Separatist forces and press them on two fronts," considered Windu.

"A means to an end fear can not be," argued Yoda. "Stop those who spread terror the Jedi must."

"Indeed," Obi-Wan agreed. "What you're suggesting would open up dangerous possibilities. And we must not train terrorists."

"Eh, rebels," said Anakin.

Grim tried not to think about the irony of Anakin's statement. If she failed and things went as she knew they would happen then he would be arguing against rebellion and not for it. He'd be trying to crush the Rebellion.

She couldn't let those thoughts get to her.

Obi-Wan went on, using Anakin's chosen word. "How we conduct war distinguishes us from others. Funding rebels to overthrow a legitimate government puts innocent lives at risk."

Grim finally spoke up. "Isn't there always a risk of that in war?" She asked. Her question surprised the Council, as this was Grim speaking. The one who had promised to save as many lives as possible. The Padawan went on. "Besides we all know how the Separatists have a disregard for life, these rebels could use our help. I agree with Anakin."

"Grim's right," said Anakin. "Plus we can minimize collateral damage by using arms that mainly affect droids."

"Besides, if the government is as cruel as the Empi- er - Separatists, should we not assist a rebellion?" Grim argued. This discussion of rebellion caused her mind to wander into the future.

The Council caught her mistake. Obi-Wan decided he would bring it up with her after this discussion.

"The least we can do is help them defend themselves, test the tactic while we're at it," Windu decided.

"This could be a great new weapon for us," said Anakin.

"I wouldn't see this as a weapon, only helping a rebellion and still trying to prevent as much death as possible," Grim argued.

"Hmm. Train and observe. Send advisors we will," Yoda decided.

"I'll assemble a team," said Anakin.

Obi-Wan stood up, "Grim and I will be going with you."

"What, you don't trust me?" Anakin asked as a joke.

I don't. Thought Grim to herself.

"Too much," Obi-Wan told him. "That's what worries me." As they left the Council Chambers Obi-Wan pulled Grim to the side. "You mentioned an empire?" He asked her.

Grim, who had hoped nobody had caught onto her mistake cringed a little. "It's only something we have to worry about in the future, and only if I fail. I'm sorry Master, the discussion of rebellion made me think of the future."

Obi-Wan looked at his padawan, concern was written on his face. "Grim, are you going to be alright on this mission? And you must remember, you're not alone. If there's something concerning you-"

"Master, look, I'll do fine on this mission. Besides, there's something I want to change, so I must go on this mission. I know I'm not alone, but please understand I don't want to burden you with the future I know."

Obi-Wan's expression softened more. He placed a hand on her shoulder, "Grim, you don't have to carry it alone. You wouldn't burden me," he told her gently.

Grim looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "I know I don't have to do this alone, but I must."

"And why must you, my young Padawan?"

She looked back at him, her eyes meeting his. "Because knowing what I know is dangerous."

"So is war, but you don't fight a war alone."

"There are other kinds of war, Obi-Wan. I'm fighting two."

"And must you fight this other one alone?" He asked her.

No. Whispered her heart. "Yes," whispered Grim.

Obi-Wan knew she was lying, but he didn't say. "Then at least know you yourself are not."

"I do," said Grim. "Thank you." She bowed her head and left. She had a mission to prepare for.

The group of four Jedi along with the addition of Rex, had just dropped out of hyperspace. The world of Onderon was in front of them, as the clone pilot flew them on world.

It wasn't long before he came over the comms of the ship. "This is Valkyrie 2929. We're coming up on the drop zone," he informed them.

The ship hovered and the doors opened, everyone jumping out of it. All four of the Jedi were wearing cloaks, although neither Grim or Ahsoka often wore them. Rex landed with a jetpack while the four Jedi used the Force.

The group of five watched the shuttle leave before beginning their search for the rebels they had been sent to help. The Jedi pulled the hoods of their cloaks over their heads. Obi-Wan noticed out of the corner of his eyes that Grim's cloak was quite big on her. It looked as if it would fit himself better.

While they were searching they were stopped by a woman riding a horse-like creature. "Stay where you are," she ordered. "Identify yourselves."

Anakin removed the hood of his cloak, "It's alright. We're friends."

"Jedi," she realized.

Obi-Wan, Grim and Ahsoka dropped down and revealed themselves as well. "I'm Commander Tano. We're here to help you take back your planet," Ahsoka introduced herself.

"My name is Steela," the woman introduced. "I'll guide you to our secret base."

As Steela led them to the hidden rebel base, Grim walked next to Obi-Wan. The Jedi Master noticed even more how big the cloak she wore was on her. "Grim, are you sure you got the right cloak?" he asked, amused.

Grim quickly blushed a little, embarrassed that her Master had caught her. "Uh-"

Obi-Wan laughed quietly and gently. "It's alright, Grim. I already knew you were stealing my cloaks."

She covered her face in her hands. "How long have you known?"

"Since I found you sleeping in one," he replied.

Grim's embarrassment increased and she moved to be between Ahsoka and Anakin rather than Obi-Wan and Ahsoka.

By the time they reached the rebel base the sun was already in the sky. As they entered the base camp, which was out in the open save for the trees that surrounded them, the rebels stopped and turned their heads at the sight of the Jedi.

"Hmm, a little rough around the edges, wouldn't you say?" Obi-Wan asked Anakin.

"That's why I brought Rex here," Anakin replied.

"They're not exactly what I would call shinies, sir but I could work with them," responded Rex.

They were met with Saw who greeted them. "General Skywalker," he said.

"At your service," replied Anakin. "This is General Kenobi, Commander Kennet, Commander Tano, and Captain Rex," he said, introducing everyone else.

Grim was reminded, once more, that she hated the fact she was a commander in war. She was still so young.

Of course, she never felt so young anymore. Not with everything the war had put her through.

Mortis, The Citadel, Umbara, Zygerria, Sidious, Maul.

"We're looking forward to taking the fight to those scrappin' droids," said Saw.

"Yes. All in good time," replied Obi-Wan.

"Saw. Saw Gerrera," he said, introducing himself.

"He fashions himself as our leader though no one elected him," explained Steela. Elbowing her brother playfully.

"Well, for now we're in charge and there is much to learn," said Anakin.

Now the Jedi were explaining what they would be teaching the rebels. No longer wearing their cloaks either.

Anakin was explaining. "The Separatists have strength in numbers We're gonna show you how to target and destroy them."

"Now, to be clear, we are not here to fight your war, rather to show you how to conduct it, in the most efficient and successful way possible," Obi-Wan clarified.

The rebels looked at each other and nodded.

"Captain Rex," said Anakin.

Rex took a step in to explain to the rebels. "I'll show you how the 501st destroys clankers. First, I need volunteers to carry supplies from our entry point a halfklick west."

"Shouldn't be a problem," said Saw.

"Excellent," replied Rex.

As the rebels were leaving, Ahsoka went over to talk with Lux. Grim nearly felt herself go tense. Ahsoka was talking with him? He was supposed to be her love interest in the show, but that wasn't going to be how it worked in life. Clearly not, as Grim and Ahsoka were already girlfriends.

As Grim observed their conversation from afar, not caring to join she felt the slightest hint of unhealthy jealousy. She had no reason for it, she was basing it off of a show that must be inaccurate on this part.

Still, a question crossed her mind: Did he still kiss Ahsoka when Grim wasn't there?

Obi-Wan noticed. "Is something bothering you Grim?"

Grim looked away from where she had been watching Ahsoka, Lux, and Steela. "Oh nothing...just," she blushed. "It's nothing."

"Is this nothing related to Ahsoka?" Anakin asked her.

Grim blushed some more. "No! Er I mean- no. It isn't."

Anakin chuckled. "You know she wouldn't go after anyone else, right? She loves you Grim."

"Anakin!" She felt as if her whole face must've been red.

"Just letting you know, Tiny. There's no reason for you to be jealous of some guy."

"Not to mention you must be mindful of such emotions, jealousy is-" Obi-Wan started.

Grim covered her eyes, "la, la, la I can't hear you." Before Anakin could pry into her love life any more or Obi-Wan could give her a lecture on attachment she ran off to find something to do and assist the rebels.

It was time to train the rebels. Ahsoka was instructing them how to stop a Separatist tank. "The pilot in the front hatch controls the tank, the shells, and the short range blasters. The commander in the top hatch controls the turret and the main cannon. You have to take out both chambers. Otherwise, the tank will remain operational."

Ahsoka nodded to Rex and he gracefully demonstrated her instructions.

Then Anakin spoke up, "everyone, divide up into teams of two and we'll practice an assault on both hatches."

The rebels began their practice as Rex and the Jedi observed them.

As Grim helped train the rebels her mind drifted and she found herself transported into the future. She did not see a rebellion against the Separatists, she saw the Rebellion against the Empire. Although she helped to train the rebels to combat droids, her mind saw nothing but the Empire. An empire that did not exist, and she hoped never would.

She tried to shake these thoughts away. She reminded herself of the Jedi with her, if this truly was the Empire there wouldn't be. Except each of the Jedi with her lived during the Empire. Ahsoka Tano was Fulcrum, Obi-Wan Kenobi was hidden as Ben Kenobi, and-

Anakin Skywalker...

No. He wasn't Darth Vader.

Grim had to remember she was in The Clone Wars. A hand went to her padawan braid. She wouldn't have it if this was the Empire.

Yet even still, she couldn't shake the feeling of the future away. It seemed to loom like a shadow, enveloping her. She hated it.

How was she always haunted by a future that didn't exist?

They were no longer working on tanks, but now they were teaching the rebels how to take down destroyer droids. Which Grim thought would make it easier to distinguish the two different groups of rebels and times.

Anakin was explaining how the destroyers were protected as Rex demonstrated. Grim then carefully aimed a droid popper at the training destroyer and defeated it. She was now addressing the rebels. "Destroyers are blind from behind. A distraction combined with a rear assault will give you a kill," she explained. "The trick is to get the right speed on the droid popper."

Rex activated the shields of the other training destroyers. "These are unarmed," Rex explained, holding a droid popper. "Just concentrate on getting it past the shield."

Grim leaned back as she watched the rebels practice. Ahsoka helped Saw, and there wasn't much else for the Padawan to do.

She noticed a probe droid from the corner of her eye. A hand went to her lightsaber.

She slipped away from the others without notice and snuck into the bushes where she had spotted the probe. She turned her lightsaber around in reverse.

The droid spotted her and started to fly away to escape. Grim wasn't going to let it go that easily and jumped up after it, using the Force to assist in her leap. She grabbed onto it with both hands, dropping her lightsaber in the process. "Ah kark," she muttered, realizing her situation.

The droid began to fly through the trees to shake off Grim. As the droid began to fly higher up Grim realized she would have to let go or she would fall to her death. Timing things right, Grim let go and began to fall.

She tried to grab onto a tree to slow her fall, but only hit the branch with the air escaping her.

She landed on the ground and groaned. "That did not go as planned."

Obi-Wan was standing over her, holding her lightsaber. "I think you dropped something," he told her.

Grim groaned again. "Yeah, and I think we were spotted and are about to have clankers for company," she retorted. She stood up and took her lightsaber back from him.

"Is that why you were in a tree?" Obi-Wan asked her.

"I was never in the damned tree," she muttered. Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow at her. Grim rolled her eyes as she clipped her lightsaber to her belt.

"Well, we best warn the others that we've been spotted," said Obi-Wan, the joking demeanor gone. He was back to being General Kenobi.

"Yes, we should," agreed Grim. "Although I would have preferred if we were never spotted."

"As would I," agreed Obi-Wan. "You could have mentioned this would happen beforehand," he added in a lower voice.

"I don't remember the episodes frame by frame, Master. Besides, I've been in this universe for how long now? I don't have a way to refresh myself on the details," Grim retorted.

Obi-Wan said nothing in response. Two years was a long time, and a lot had happened to his Padawan since she had become as such. He switched the topic to something else that had been concerning him. "You've been lost in time. I noticed the way you've been watching the rebels, you haven't been seeing the same thing."

So it had been obvious? "We're only in the Prequels. In the Original movies the main villains were the Empire and the heroes were the Rebellion. I'm always worried about the future, and now I'm helping a rebellion, whom one member of it plays a significant role in the Rebellion against the Empire. Not to mention, even when trying to use you, or Ahsoka, or even Skywalker as a reminder of when in the timeline I am in, all of you play significant roles in the future. Well, you not so much but you're still the first Jedi introduced in the films if we go by release order. Ahsoka may not be in the films but in one of the shows she plays a major role."

Obi-Wan was quiet for a moment. Maybe she shouldn't have come along on this mission if she was seeing this much of the wrong time. Although he couldn't help but notice how she didn't discuss Anakin's future role. He couldn't help but ask, "what about Anakin? You said all of us play significant roles."

"We need to warn them that we were spotted," was all Grim said. Hastily changing the topic.

Again Obi-Wan couldn't help but notice how his Padawan avoided the topic of Anakin's future. Although he said nothing more on the subject. Not wishing to press Grim any further. Besides, Anakin's future wasn't his business. And Grim was right, they had to warn the rebels that they had been spotted.

They went back to the rebel base, the two Jedi heading over to Anakin. "We've been spotted," Obi-Wan told him.

"Attention everyone! We were spotted by the enemy, we're about to have to put all this training to use," Anakin announced.

Heads turned and whispers were shared. Ahsoka and Saw jogged over to them. "How long do we have, General?" Saw asked Anakin.

Anakin looked at Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan looked at Grim. The padawan bit the inside of her cheek. "There's no telling, but the Seps know our location, meaning they're on their way. With the time we have we must prepare," as she spoke, Grim quickly shifted from being nervous and embarrassed to a soldier in war.

Commander Kennet was addressing the Onderon Rebellion. "You have been labeled as a threat, Meaning the droids will attack with force and high numbers. Each and every one of you must remember the skills that you have been taught. Remember also they've lost one of their advantages and we have gained one. They thought they could take you by surprise, but now you have time to prepare. Although it is an unknown amount, use it wisely."

The rebels dispersed to create a plan. "Well said, Grim," Obi-Wan told her.

"We're not out of this yet, it's hardly begun," she replied.

"Remember we're not here to fight their war for them," Obi-Wan reminded her.

"Then are we not going to fight with them?" Anakin asked him.

"This is not our fight, Anakin. This is theirs."

"So we just let it be?" Ahsoka asked, crossing her arms.

"We were sent to teach and advise, not to fight their battles."

Grim sighed. She knew he was right. But knowing things had never made them better, she knew that all too well. "Still a little assistance couldn't hurt?" Grim suggested.

"This is their battle, not ours," Obi-Wan said again.

"Yeah, and when have I ever cared if a battle was mine or not?" Grim retorted. Before Obi-Wan could stop her she had run off.

"Grim!" He shouted after her, before pinching the bridge of his nose and sighing. "I swear, one of these days..."

"I'm going with her," decided Anakin, before running off after Grim.

"Anakin no! Wait-" but again his former padawan was gone before Obi-Wan had said a word. He turned to Ahsoka, "please don't do anything stupid with them."

"I won't Master Obi-Wan, but shouldn't we help them?"

"They can handle themselves, I'm glad you understand the mission."

Five minutes later there was the sound of an explosion followed quickly by blaster fire. Despite what Obi-Wan had said he ran to the source with Ahsoka following behind him. Anakin and Grim were trying to defend the rebels, but Obi-Wan saw they were not fighting the droids and was leaving that to the rebels.

Just as their mission directed.

Grim was shouting directions to the rebels behind her. "Aim for the droids' head, it's the only part they need!" She informed them. She was fighting side by side with Anakin and Obi-Wan found how much she had grown up and learned already. And he found himself smiling. Proud of his student.

He and Ahsoka ran to assist them in their defense of the rebels. As the droids pushed them into cover despite their brief time to prepare thanks to Grim's warning.

"Glad you changed your mind, Master," said Grim smiling, seeing Obi-Wan joining her side.

"We can only protect them," Obi-Wan reminded her.

"I'm aware of that," she replied. "They can't fight if we do it for them. Who do you think stopped Skywalker from doing just that?"

"Hey! I'm right here, Tiny," Anakin said.

The small padawan only grinned up at him. Obi-Wan shook his head.

Obi-Wan then turned to Steela, who was behind them. "There are too many of them, but Anakin, Ahsoka, Grim, and I can hold them off while you get your people out of here."

"You didn't teach us to run," she told him. She turned on her comm, "Saw, use your disruptors to take out the droids."

"I'm on it," Saw replied. He turned to the rebels with him. "Ready disruptors. On my mark!" He ordered. "Now!" He said throwing his own disruptor at the droids.

Then the others threw their own. And the droids were defeated.

"Not bad," Anakin said.

"That's only wave one," said Grim.

At the same time Obi-Wan was saying, "that's only the first wave."

Grim and Obi-Wan looked at each other. Grim couldn't help but chuckle a little at the fact. It seems the Master and Padawan were on the same page now.

A tank drove into the base and began shooting, as more droids arrived. "We'll handle this," said Grim.

"No, I will," Steela replied. "Duck!" She told the Jedi, and they did what they were told. She shot the mounts of the rebels free and the creatures stampeded the droids.

Lux and Saw then ran at the tank and followed their lessons as they took it down. Ahsoka joined in assisting Lux. The tank exploded as they jumped away. Ahsoka helped up Saw, and Steela helped Lux.

After the battle the rebels, Jedi, and Rex met at the center of the base, with Rex and the Jedi standing to address the rebels. As Obi-Wan was doing now. "Take confidence from this victory. But rest assured, there will be more droids coming now that they know your position."

"It doesn't matter. You're ready now," said Anakin. "We are going to take the fight to the droids. You don't have to hide in the jungle any longer."

"Droids were a bit dim, more so then I imagined," Saw commented.

"They make for it in numbers," said Ahsoka. "They're designed to overwhelm."

"But they're not designed to deal with our approach," said Anakin.

"We hit them where they least expect it," Lux suggested. "And before they realize what happened-"

"We fade in with the rest of the population," Steela finished.

"Exactly," said Grim.

"We need a plan to get inside the city," Ahsoka pointed out.

"I have an idea," said Lux.

So the rebels disguised themselves as hunters to trade, as many of the rebels hid underneath. The four Jedi wore their cloaks again to disguise their recognizable faces. Easily fooling the droids and entering into the city.

"Not a bad start," said Anakin. "But now the hard work begins."

"You must find recruits and choose your targets wisely," Obi-Wan advised.

"They'll be looking for us," said Steela.

"We should split up," suggested Lux.

"Regroup after nightfall. I'll alert our brothers," said Saw.

"We'll make sure you have the supplies you need," said Anakin.

"Rex, Grim and I will take care of that," said Ahsoka.

"Good luck," said Lux.

"You too," Ahsoka and Steela replied as one.

Grim felt that flush of unjustified jealousy rise again. She pushed it back down. It was stupid. Lux and Ahsoka would've never kissed.

Right?

The Jedi remained to advise the rebels. Each Jedi watching different rebels and observing the situations.

As Grim watched the rebels she was with and the surrounding reactions, she did her best to make sure her mind saw the correct time. Future and present blended for Grim as it never had before. It had always been one person she saw at the wrong time, not everything at once.

The existence of the droids helped Grim only slightly. But that became her focal point when she found herself falling into the wrong time yet again.

They regrouped at an abandoned house the rebellion had taken to as a base. The four Jedi took a seat on the couch facing the rebels and removing the hoods of their cloaks. Anakin addressed the rebellion, "your success will not go unnoticed." Many rebels cheered at this news.

"I agree," said Obi-Wan. "But we need to be mindful of public perception. What were your observations, Padawans?" He asked the two.

"The people are fearful, Master," said Ahsoka.

"Yes, they're afraid," agreed Grim.

"Indeed," noted Obi-Wan. "Judging from the reactions I saw today, I'm afraid they will mistake your intentions."

"We need to do more damage," said Saw. "A few dozen broken down droids will do little to free Onderon."

"The people need to believe we can succeed," Steela argued. "Without their support, our efforts are meaningless."

"If they're afraid, they won't support us," agreed Lux. "We need to assure them of our intentions."

"I don't understand. Why are they afraid?" Asked Saw.

"They're afraid we're not strong enough to win," replied Steela. "We need to earn their trust."

"You'll have plenty of time to earn their trust," said Anakin. "All of you are going to be very busy."

"Today was only a taste," said Rex. "You'll get your chance."

"In the meantime, make the most of your victories," Obi-Wan advised. "Welcome and learn from them."

"Perhaps if we hit something big, gave a show of strength, they will overcome their fear and join us," Lux proposed.

"Do you have something in mind?" Ahsoka asked.

"I know the perfect target," he replied.

As Rex and the Jedi left the meeting Anakin said, "I think they're ready to give the 501st some competition."

"Let's not get carried away, General," Rex replied. "Though these rebels have impressed me."

"We will share the developments with the Jedi Council," said Obi-Wan. "Ahsoka and Grim will remain here as advisors." He turned to the padawans. "Monitor them and report back with their progress."

The two of them bowed. Anakin put a hand on Ahsoka's shoulder. "Are you up for it, Snips? Or would you like to return to Coruscant?"

"No, Master. I want to stay," Ahsoka replied.

"Good," said Obi-Wan. "We should continue to provide supplies and credits, but they must learn to operate on their own. Their survival depends on it."

"I understand, Master," replied Grim.

"Yes, Master," replied Ahsoka.

"Remember your purpose," Anakin told the two padawans. With those words, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Rex left the two behind.

Grim and Ahsoka turned to each other. "Well," said Grim. "I guess it's up to us now."

The two Jedi were now on a roof with Saw, Steela, and Lux, staking out the power generator. Lux explained his idea, "this power generator feeds substations across the city. We hit that, the entire grid falls."

"How does that help us?" Steela asked. "Battle droids are no longer linked to central control. They operate individually."

"Yes, but they still need power to recharge," Lux pointed out. "If we take out this facility, it will knock out the power grid, and then it will only be a matter of time until the droid army is brought to a standstill, literally."

"If you carry out the plan by nightfall, you'll maximize your strike capability," Ahsoka suggested.

"Okay, so we just need to figure out how to destroy the power station," said Steela.

"We need to do more surveillance," suggested Lux.

"Those droids should have all the intel we need, stored up in those tin cans of theirs, right?" asked Saw.

"Yes. they should," said Grim.

"Then I'll get us one," said Saw. He then slid from the roof to get a droid.

He quickly returned with a droid head and Lux set it up so they could see the information inside. As a holomap appeared the three rebels studied it while the two Jedi watched them.

"Sentries at every access point, inside and out," noticed Saw.

"We can't sustain combat against their numbers," said Lux.

"But our size makes us perfect for mobility and surprise," Steela pointed out. "We need something with heavy firepower if we are to blow up this facility."

"If we give them enough trouble they'll call for reinforcements," Lux said.

"Like a tank," realized Steela.

"Exactly. Then you can provide cover while we hijack it."

"And then we'll use their own weapon against them."

"And bring the droid army to its knees," concluded Saw.

Grim and Ahsoka smiled at the rebels and then each other.

They had spent the whole day planning for this attack while the two Jedi watched and advised. Grim often stayed close to Ahsoka, leaning closer to her than she would if other Jedi were around.

When dusk arrived the rebels, with the two Padawans, were set to cause trouble for the droids.

"Remember the plan," Lux was saying. "We attack this patrol, and hopefully they will call in a tank for backup."

The heavy metal of the droid footsteps clanged on the ground. They all watched as the droids began their patrol and then-

Saw signaled for the attack to begin.

Hiding in another place a rebel set off the droid popper hidden in a speeder that shut off a few of the droids passing by.

That's when the blasterfire began.

The rebels started their attack. Taking down all but one of the droids until the last one called for reinforcements. The two Jedi left their hiding places. "Let's hope they send a tank," said Grim.

"Hear that?" Asked Ahsoka and there was the sound of metal rolling on the ground. "They sent destroyers. Move!"

More blasterfire rung out now thanks to the destroyers that had been sent.

The rebels ran back and the Jedi activated their lightsabers. Standing their ground and defending the rebels, but not fighting for them. Grim and Ahsoka stayed side by side covering Steela.

From behind Saw took down one of the destroyers but Lux was unable to take down the other, gaining its attention. Saw moved behind the defeated droid for shielding.

Seeing all of this chaos, Steela ran in sliding down and reaching her arm inside the shield placing the droid popper inside. Defeating it. Lux and Saw helped Steela stand and the two Jedi rushed over to the three rebels.

"I've never seen a destroyer taken out that way before," Ahsoka told her, giving Steela back her gun.

"We all have to adapt," Steela replied.

"And you adapted well, that was impressive," said Grim.

From behind them they could hear the sound of an engine. They turned around sure enough-

"There's our tank," said Saw.

"Split up!" Ordered Steela.

Ahsoka went with Steela and Grim went with Saw and Lux.

They ran towards the tank avoiding blasterfire and returning their own. Saw and Lux took out the tank, and Steela took out the final droid. The rebels grouped together again. "Good work, now let's get this tank up and running again," said Saw.

Saw jumped into the tank. He started pressing buttons but was unable to get the tank started. Steela came in and got it running, before letting her brother back into the tank. Then the rebels were off to the power generator.

"I'll draw their fire," said Steela. "Good luck."

"Good luck," Lux told her.

"We'll cover you," said the Jedi.

They jumped off the tank together, and ran for a place where Steela could snipe from. The blasterfire began, and the two Padawans covered Steela, as they deflected the bolts back with their lightsabers.

Saw came in with the tank, and shot open the doors to the facility. As commando droids ran to defend, Steela ran to attack. The two Padawans stayed back and watched, not interfering further with the battle.

When the gun on the tank recharge Saw shot once more and destroyed the power grid. They quickly ducked as the explosion went out.

Grim covered her ears and Ahsoka covered the parts of her montrals that covered where ears would be if she were human. Grim noticed this behavior for the first time, but didn't say anything about it. She didn't know enough about togruta biology to know how they hear.

The two Jedi put on night vision goggles. "Looks like all that training is paying off," said Ahsoka.

"So it does," agreed Grim. She kissed Ahsoka on the cheek.

Ahsoka smiled at her.

As the rebels made their way back to the base, they destroyed more droids and the people began to cheer. Grim smiled.

This was rebellion. And Grim saw the right time.

Back at the base the two Jedi stood next to each other and next to the holograms of Rex, Anakin, and Obi-Wan.

"We will celebrate," Steela was saying.

"With pleasure," replied Saw. He picked her up and circled her in the air before letting her down.

"Come here you handsome senator," she said to Lux before hugging him.

Grim looked at Ahsoka and leaned against her, smiling. Ahsoka smiled back.

"Steela is a born leader," said Rex.

"And quite courageous I hear," added Obi-Wan. He then addressed the rebels. "This latest development is sure to get Count Dooku's attention. He will respond harshly. They will stop at nothing to find you. You must adapt and continue to confront them in order to liberate Onderon."

"We will," said Saw.

"And we shall win," added Steela.

"In that, I have no doubt," Obi-Wan agreed.

"Now you must rally the people," added Anakin. "You will need their support. Your ability to influence them will also determine your capacity to represent them not only on the battlefield but off of it against your enemies, and even within your own ranks. Your commitment will inspire others. Your conviction will lead to victory."

"After tonight's efforts the people will be ready to follow," said Obi-Wan. "You will need a leader for them to rally behind."

When the call was done the rebels continued to talk. Saw was speaking now, "we need to build on our momentum and continue our attacks to keep them off balance."

"We have to assure the people first," argued Lux. "If we keep disrupting their lives, we risk alienating them. We have to gain their trust."

"I agree with both of you," said Steela. "We can balance both. We also need to recruit others to join us. Onderon is ours. We will remind everyone, and keep reminding them until we get it back."

The rebels cheered. Grim and Ahsoka watched while smiling.

"All in favor for Steela as our leader, raise your hand," one rebel proclaimed, asking the others to vote.

All the rebels agreed.

"Okay, looks like it's been decided, you're the leader," Saw told his sister. He then left, frustrated that it wasn't him.

"Saw!" Steela started, about to go after him.

Lux grabbed her arm. "Let him go. He just needs to blow off some steam."

Steela sighed. "I can't." She began to go after Saw.

"Why?" asked Ahsoka.

"He's my brother," answered Steela.

The following morning Grim and Ahsoka helped place devices to broadcast Steela's image in the city. Once the rebels ambushed some droids the two got the signal and began the broadcast.

Steela spoke, "people of Onderon, the time has come to take back our freedom. We have all been deceived. King Rash is a traitor who has sold Onderon to the Separatists for the crown. But Onderon is ours. We need your strength to reclaim our planet and restore our sovereignty under our true king, King Dendup."

The people muttered as they took in her speech, and the rebels returned to their hideout.

The rebels were now taking supplies into the base. Supplies the Jedi had sent.

"Okay guys, put it in the back with the rest," Ahsoka said.

One of the rebels rushed over to Steela, Grim, and Ahsoka. "Steela! They're executing King Dendup tomorrow at Yolahn Square," she informed her.

"Where did you hear this?" Steela asked.

"Malgen Market. The merchants. The Separatists are saying he's behind our attacks."

"More lies. They're making him an example to humiliate us."

"Maybe, but their efforts could work against them," Ahsoka pointed out. "Executing him would only make him a martyr,"

"We can't let him die," said Saw. "We have to break him out somehow."

"No," said Steela. "We should wait until he's in public, at the execution."

"That's where they'd expect it."

"I know, but this is our moment. We'll save him for all of Iziz to witness. We don't have much time."

"They're counting on us to show up," said Saw again. He began to walk off.

"Where are you going?"

"Trust me."

"Stop!"

"Let me take care of this."

"This isn't about you."

"We can't afford a reckless move right now," Lux cut in, agreeing with Steela.

"Yeah? Go write a speech about it."

"You have to weigh the risk," said Ahsoka.

"That's why I'm going alone." With those words he left.

The rebel who informed them about the King started after Saw and then stopped and looked to Steela for instructions. "Follow him," Steela told her. So the rebel left.

"I'm going too," decided Grim.

"No Grim, you can't," Ahsoka told her. "They need us here."

"They need you, Ash," Grim corrected. "I'll be fine on my own." She gave Ahsoka a quick peck on her lips and went to rush after Saw.

Ahsoka grabbed her arm. "Grim," she said.

"I can handle myself," she insisted, pulling free and running after Saw.

After a while she finally caught up with Saw. "Saw wait," she told him.

He turned around and saw her. "What are you doing here? I told you I'm doing this, and I'm going alone."

"I know you did, but I don't think you realize the risks you're putting yourself in."

"I do know, and that's why I'm going alone. You can't talk me out of this."

"Let me try."

"No. Go back with the others, they need you."

"And they need you too, Saw."

"They have Steela," he replied. Then he left, leaving Grim behind.

Grim sighed and grumbled something under her breath before heading back to the rebel hideout. As she was, alarms began to blare. "Shit," muttered Grim. The other rebel who had gone after Saw knew what that meant as well.

"We have to tell the others," she told Grim.

Grim nodded. "I agree."

The two of them ran back to the rebel base. The rebels had been in the middle of a strategy meeting when they burst in, "they have Saw!" The two of them informed the rebellion.

"He's alive but we watched him be taken away," Grim added.

"We have to save him," Lux decided standing up.

There were shouts of agreement from the other rebels as they began to prepare. Then Steela spoke. "No. We have to save King Dendup. We don't have time or the bodies to do both."

"He's your brother," said Lux, surprised by Steela's words.

"That's what Saw would want, what he would expect. And I expect the same from everyone in this room," argued Steela.

Ahsoka too addressed the rebels. "I know it's a hard choice but I agree. Purpose must come before feelings," Ahsoka reminded them

As she said this her eyes locked with Grim's. There in that one moment was a silent and unspoken understanding between the two of them.

Purpose would come before feelings.

And it was with the realization that Grim knew then, that she would never be able to stay with Ahsoka. They would leave in time. When Ahsoka left the Jedi, Grim would stay. Her purpose was set before her feelings, so she would have to let Ahsoka go.

And Ahsoka also knew then, that the two of them would not stay. Why or how she came to this, she didn't know. But something in Grim's eyes told a story. The story Grim was always trying to write and change, but some days stayed the same.

Both Padawans knew. They would let each other go. Their purpose would come before their feelings. So they could never stay. But still, they would love each other despite this.

"Ahsoka and Steela are right, the success of this rebellion depends on King Dendup's life, not Saw's. The people of Onderon depend on this rebellion, more lives depend on this. Our purpose must come before our feelings. I too would want to rescue Saw, as I'm sure Steela does. But we can't let our personal feelings get in front of the bigger picture," added Grim.

Later that very same night the two padawans were preparing for bed. "Grim, you know we can't help them on this mission, right? The Council has instructed us to sit this one out."

"I know, Ash. I wish we could," Grim sighed.

"Me too, but we've been more involved than they wanted. Master Kenobi told us, their survival depends on learning on their own."

"I know, but it's so unlike me to not fight."

"We are, just not like we're used to."

"I suppose so." Grim laid her head next to Ahsoka's. It was quiet for a long moment. "When this war is done, what do you want to do?"

"I don't know," Ahsoka admitted. "I haven't thought about that. I suppose I would continue my training until I become a Knight, after that I'm not sure. What about you, Grim? What do you want to do when this war is over?"

A long silence. "I don't know either, I haven't thought of anything past this war that doesn't involve changing the story," she admitted. "I haven't seen myself in the story after this war. So I suppose it would be the same as you."

Unless I fail. I still don't know. I would like to fight in the Rebellion. But would I be able to bring myself to face that?

She wouldn't think about that. She couldn't.

"Goodnight Grim."

"Goodnight Ahsoka."

The following morning it was time for the rescue of King Dendup. Or for what the public and Separatists knew, the execution of King Dendup. The rebels and Jedi hid among the crowd of spectators. Grim stayed by Ahsoka's side, as the two held hands.

King Rash addressed the public. "As your king I present to you Ramsis Dendup not as a former king but as a criminal sponsoring terrorist acts against the people of Onderon. But fear not good citizens. As your leader and protector, I will see that you are safe from such villainy. He has betrayed you, and today he will pay for those treasonous deeds with his life."

Dendup was forced to his knees before what Grim could only describe as the Star Wars equivalent of the guillotine. Rash dropped the fruit he was eating into the device and two magmadroids with electrostaffs hit the device cutting it in half.

Yep, Star Wars guillotine.

Dendup's head was pushed through into the force field of the Star Wars guillotine. The rebels looked at each other, and Ahsoka held Grim's hand tighter to stop her from doing anything reckless.

"Ready weapons," the King ordered the droids. The staffs turned on again, and as King Rash signaled for the execution the rebels made their move.

People screamed, the stage was obscured with smoke from the smoke bombs that had been used, blasterfire filled the air.

In the chaos the rebels emerged with Dendup.

A rebel called for them to follow her but she was shot dead by a droid.

Then more droids surrounded the group of rebels.

Grim's hand went for her lightsaber.

Ready to fight.

Ahsoka grabbed her arm. "No, not yet," she told her.

Grim knew she was right, but she didn't move her hand.

"Surrender now or die," the tactical droid told the rebels.

Steela still was ready to fight.

"It's over," Dendup told them. "Do as they say."

The rebels did so. The crowd began to boo and protest.

"Calm yourselves," said the King. "The threat is over. See for yourselves as these traitors all endure the same punishment."

Again Dendup was forced to his knees and his head was pushed into the Star Wars equivalent of the guillotine.

Grim and Ahsoka made their way closer to the stage.

The two Padawans were ready to fight.

Despite their orders from the Council.

"Ready weapons," King Rash once again ordered.

The people shouted and protested.

The Jedi pulled out their lightsabers.

"The snake will not strike again," Rash said, about to give the signal to execute Dendup-

"Stop!" Said the general.

"What?" King Rash said in surprise.

The general rushed forwards with the Royal Army. "The only snake I see, sire, is you." He and his men surrounded the King and his droids.

The Jedi put down their lightsabers but did not clip them away.

"Traitor!" Rash exclaimed.

"I was. Not anymore." He took the King prisoner.

"What are you doing, general?!" Rash demanded.

The rebels began to leave with Dendup. The crowd cheered and made way for the rebels to escape.

The general held his ground and ordered his men to go with the rebellion. They did as they were told.

All droids had their blasters pointed at the general as he held the king. Even two destroyers rolled up.

That was when the padawans moved.

Leaping into the air as they each ignited their lightsabers. They used the Force to push the droids back, as the hoods of their cloaks fell revealing their faces. The people gasped in surprise at the presence of the two Jedi.

"Jedi?" The King realized.

"General, follow us," Ahsoka told him.

The general released the King and followed the two padawans.

"After them! Kill them!" The King ordered his droids.

The people would not allow it and now they were rebelling too. And as they did Grim smiled.

The rebels had already escorted Dendup to their hideout by the time Grim and Ahsoka arrived with the general. Dendup and the general looked at each other.

"Why now?" Dendup asked.

"It was time for a new approach, my lord."

"Do I have your loyalty?"

"And that of the army."

"You also have ours," Steela added. "With your rule our numbers will grow."

"Thanks child," said Dendup. He turned to Lux. "Your mother would be proud."

"Thank you, my lord," he replied.

He then addressed all the rebels. "We must first win the will of the people. That is the only way." He stood. "The Separatists will assemble their forces Count Dooku will want me dead more than ever."

"Then we'll have to teach them another lesson. Together," said Saw.

The rebels cheered.

Lux approached the two Jedi. "Ahsoka, I knew you couldn't resist a good fight," he told her.

"Am I becoming that predictable?" she asked.

"Only to me."

Once more Grim felt a jealous flare. She took a step forward about to punch the senator in the face. Ahsoka grabbed her arm and held her back. "No Grim," she told her.

"Pardon me, Bonteri, that's my girlfriend," Grim told him, ignoring Ahsoka.

"Girlfriend? I thought Jedi-"

Grim ran out of the room.

Later that night Grim and Ahsoka updated Anakin and Obi-Wan on the situation. "The Separatists definitely know we're backing the rebels," Grim told them.

"Then prepare yourselves," Obi-Wan told them. "The real fight is about to begin."

"Will you be able to send some help?" Ahsoka asked.

"That's up to the Council, Ahsoka," Anakin replied.

"It'll be fine, Ash, we can handle ourselves," Grim told her, noticing the worry.

"It will be dangerous but I know you can do it," Anakin told both of them.

"And I do too," said Grim. She had seen this before. Despite the one change she had to make, it would still win in victory.

"Be careful," Obi-Wan told the padawans. "Remember, your purpose, and try not to interfere much this time."

"I'm afraid I can make no promises," said Grim. "But there's no need to worry about us."

"Grim the survival of this rebellion depends on y-"

"And someone's survival also depends on me to change things," Grim interrupted, forgetting Anakin was there.

"You can't save everyone," Obi-Wan reminded her.

In a whisper Grim replied, "I have to."

A few days passed.

One morning in the marketplace, Ahsoka placed down a hologram. Dendup's image came to life. Ahsoka began to leave, heading to where Grim was waiting on her to help take her to the base. As the rebels had moved their base outside the city to avoid capture.

Dendup addressed his people. "My fellow subjects, I appear not as your king, but as a servant of Onderon. We are in the midst of a great struggle. The Confederacy has used the recent attacks as an opportunity to tighten their hold on Onderon. They have accused me of leading these so-called terrorists. It is a lie they have engineered to further restrict your independence and use deadly force against our people. The truth is, I have never met them before now. I have come to know them as the true sons of Onderon. They are unwilling to surrender our freedom to those who conspire to take it from us. Our destiny is tied to them and this planet. We must all rise together to protect it."

As Ahsoka got behind Grim, she nodded at her to fly away. Grim smiled and led the creature to the base, while Ahsoka held her from behind. The two Jedi headed back to the base.

When they arrived Grim and Ahsoka jumped off the creature. Grim explained the news to the rebels. "The people are turning against the droids. There's rioting in the streets now."

"That's a beautiful thing," said Saw.

"We need to keep the battles to the outskirts of the city," Steela said.

"Yes, there's less structures and people. Less damage to anyone aside from the Seps," agreed Grim.

"But less clankers. Their main force is in Iziz," Saw argued. "We should join the fight down there and take it straight to King Rash."

"We all want victory but not at the cost of innocent lives," Steela argued. "If we fight door to door, no one is safe."

"This is war Steela."

"She's right," said Dendup.

"I agree," said Ahsoka.

"Me too," said Grim.

"The more you draw the droids away from the city and to the highlands, the safer the people will be," Ahsoka added.

"My men await your command, my lord," the general told Dendup.

"I believe there's a new contender," Dendup told him. He turned to Steela. "You will lead our forces, including the royal army. Steela is now the commanding general."

"A great choice," said Grim, agreeing.

"As you wish, my lord," the now former general said.

"You and your rebels renewed my faith in myself," Dendup told Steela. "Now I am putting my faith in you."

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Steela told him, honored. "Let's rise," she told the rebels. Before they got on their mounts, Steela kissed Lux. "Just in case," she told him. The two got on their mount, and Grim and Ahsoka got on another.

Later they were set for battle. Steela landed in front of Grim, Ahsoka, and Lux. "The droid army is almost here. Get ready," she told them.

The two armies met, ready for battle. "Ready," the former general told Steela through comms.

"Saw begin your attack," she ordered her brother.

The battle began.

Blasterfire, explosions, and smoke filled the air. It had long grown familiar for Grim. After the years of war Grim found herself almost joining on instinct, but Ahsoka stopped her.

Just with one look and she knew that she had to let the rebels handle this.

But this battle was different; the Separatists had a new weapon. As Steela watched them destroy her friends. "No!" She cried.

"Any idea where that came from?" Lux asked.

"There!" said Grim pointing at the new gunships that had joined the battle.

Large flying machines that swept through the air. Eradicating the rebels with ease with one shot emitting many blaster bolts. Too many and too quick to count.

Steela and Lux tried to shoot it down, but the droids were shielded.

"Any ideas?" Steela asked.

"Yeah. Run!" said Ahsoka.

The four ran quickly, as the part of the cliff they were on was shot and fell to the ground beneath them.

The rebels were being massacred. Grim hated this.

Obi-Wan was right, she couldn't save everyone.

But still, that wasn't going to stop her from trying. Maybe she couldn't save everyone, but she could save as many as possible, after all that had been her goal from the beginning.

Ahsoka called Obi-Wan and Anakin, Grim was beside her.

"I take it the rebels have Dooku's full attention," said Obi-Wan.

"It's a full-scale war," Grim told him, shouting over the battle.

"They need our help. Please talk to the Council," Ahsoka added, just as loudly.

"Even Master Windu would be wary at this point," Obi-Wan told the two padawans. "The Council will not engage or involve the Republic in an internal affair."

"The Separatists have a new gunship with a powerful ray shield," Grim informed them. "Nothing is getting past it."

"I am sorry, Padawans. They will have to find a way. Do not stay there if their failure is certain."

Grim gawked at him. "No way, Master. They'll succeed, I know they will."

"Is this you knowing or hoping? Evacuate who you can and return to Coruscant immediately."

"Yes Master," said Ahsoka. She ended the call before Grim could protest further.

The two Padawans went back to the battle. "Is the Republic going to help?" Steela asked them.

"No," Grim answered sadly.

"What's it going to take?" Lux asked.

"King Rash rules Onderon. Unless that changes the Republic can't do anything," Ahsoka answered.

"Cover them," Steela told Lux as the rebels retreated.

They reached the nest, what they had claimed as their base of operations. The rebels, Grim and Ahsoka discussed the battle. Saw was speaking presently, "the highlands may slow down the droids, but they won't stop the gunships."

"We have to move," said Steela.

"Any word from Master Skywalker?" Lux asked the Jedi.

"Not yet," said Ahsoka.

"We're not giving up yet," decided Steela. "Stagger our defenses at the camp. Secure the approach. Stay in small teams. Make use of our training."

"You really are the best leader among us," Saw told her. "I couldn't be more proud of you, my sister."

"I learned from the best, big brother," she told him.

"Let's go, General," Saw said. They left the base together.

"You have to help us," Lux told the Jedi.

"We can do all we can to protect you, but we can't fight this war for you," Ahsoka replied.

"We wouldn't have made it this far without you," Steela told them.

"I wish we could do more," Grim told her.

From above a ship was approaching, but it wasn't the Separatists. "Wait," said Ahsoka. "It looks like we have company."

They ran to meet the ship. "Don't shoot!" Grim called after them.

That was when they saw who their company was. It was Hondo himself.

"Hondo, what are you doing here?" Ahsoka demanded.

Hondo clicked his tongue. "Oh, no,no,no, you should thank me, child. I have brought you a gift from Skywalker and Kenobi."

"Skywalker sure has his moments sometimes," commented Grim. "The Republic couldn't assist us, so he got you to do so."

Hondo laughed. "You got it on the mark, Little Kenobi."

"Little Kenobi?" Grim echoed confused. "No, no, I am not Obi-Wan's daughter. You misunderstand-"

Ahsoka stifled a small chuckle from beside her. Grim shot her girlfriend a look.

"Really? You two really look like you could be Little Kenobi. Anyways back to this business. These rocket launchers were very expensive, you know."

"Paid for?" Ahsoka asked, not trusting the pirate.

"Very handsome-" A blaster bolt zoomed past him. "Oh! Oh my, look at the time. I've got to go. My work here is done," with that he left.

A few commando droids had found them. Steela shot them down. "They must have seen Hondo's ship."

"It was only a patrol," said Ahsoka.

"We have to get these down to the others," said Lux, gathering the rocket launchers, and passing them out. "Load them up," he said.

"I hope they'll work," said Steela.

"There's only one way to find out," Grim and Ahsoka said together.

The three of them returned to the battle with the weapons they had received. "We tried everything, but we're target practice for those gunships!" Saw told them.

"Now it's their turn," said Lux, handing out the rocket launchers.

"Thank the Jedi," Steela told her brother as she handed him one. Saw ran off to use it. "Saw!" She called after him.

He shot down one of the gunships. "I love this!" He chuckled.

The rebels cheered.

"Distribute the rocket launchers and take out those gunships," Steela ordered.

That's when her comm went off. "Steela! They're attacking the nest! They're after the king!"

"Come on," said Steela, heading back to the nest. Grim followed her, jumping on the same mount as she did.

When they reached the nest there was already smoke. One of the new gunships was there as well. Steela tried to hit it with a rocket launcher but missed. She then jumped off her mount and Grim followed. This time when she shot the gunship it landed and the gunship crashed.

The battle continued and Grim activated her lightsaber as she stayed next to Steela. As Steela shot down the droids, Grim sliced through them with ease. She kept a close eye on the rebel she was protecting, hardly leaving her side.

Dendup was pushed to the edge of a cliff, but Steela shot down the droid who had backed him into his position. "Are you all right, Your Majesty?" she asked him as she helped him up.

"Thanks to you," he replied.

One of the gunships was shot down, and was heading directly to them. Grim grabbed Steela and Dendup with the Force and threw them to safety, before jumping down on her stomach covering her head with her hands.

When she got up the cliff underneath her broke. She began to fall but as she did so she jumped, using the Force for assistance and got back onto solid ground. Avoiding an early grave.

Soon after that, the battle was won. And Grim had saved who she had gone to save, although she had wished she could have saved more. Dendup was restored as the rightful king to Onderon, and the Padawans returned home with their Masters.

Maybe Grim couldn't save everyone, but she could save as many as possible.
