Chapter 2: A Lesson In Belonging

"Careful Grim," Obi-Wan told her, as he watched his padawan practice using her new lightsaber. Grim had begun to attempt some more dangerous stunts.

"Always am," replied Grim, though she stopped doing the more dangerous stunt.

"I struggle to believe that, considering some of our first interactions," Obi-Wan replied.

Grim shrugged, "outliers, you haven't known me for that long."

Obi-Wan sighed and shook his head with a small smile. "Let me show you," he said, going over to Grim's side. "Copy my movements, alright?"

"Yes master," said Grim.

Obi-Wan took out his own lightsaber and activated it. "Ready?" he asked her.

"Ready," she replied.

Obi-Wan began and Grim matched his movements, at first she struggled and it took a moment to copy his movements as she lagged behind.

Though after a while she copied his movements harmoniously, as if they danced. Obi-Wan moved one way and Grim followed, he moved the other and so did Grim. A beautiful harmonious dance. She smiled as the two soon began to move in sync. Grim had begun to get a feel of the moves, and didn't have to watch Obi-Wan to know what came next, she had gotten a hang of the pattern, mapping it in her brain.

She laughed a bit, "I'm doing it," she said with a grin. "I'm doing it!"

"And you're doing great," he told her with a smile. This continued for a few moments more before they stopped, Grim was beaming with pride. Good job Grim,” Obi-Wan told her. “Let’s do some meditation next-” his commlink beeped, interrupting him. “After I take this, one moment Grim.”

“Alright,” Grim said, a little disappointed that their training had been interrupted. Though she supposed that would happen often with the galaxy being at war and Obi-Wan being one of the most prominent generals. She leaned against the wall as she waited on her master to finish the call, after he came back over to her Grim asked him, “What was it about?”

Obi-Wan sighed and shook his head, “Anakin is about to do something reckless, I’m afraid.”

“Again?” asked Grim, sighing.

“Unfortunately so,” replied Obi-Wan. “Well, let’s go do some mediation.”

The two Jedi meditated in peace. Grim allowed herself to sink into the force and reach out, connecting with everything. Allowing herself to get a feel for everyone, to focus without worrying about a stray thought spirling her into an anxious panic about the future. It was relaxing and calm.

She saw the sparks of color and light of the force fly across space and time. There was so much light in the galaxy. So many Jedi in the galaxy, there was darkness too, but the light out shined it. The light was bright and the galaxy was full of it.

Obi-Wan’s commlink beeped, and both Jedi were pulled out of their mediation. “My apologies, padawan, I have to take this.”

Grim just waved her hand, “yeah, yeah, I understand.” Obi-Wan gave her an apologetic smile and left the room to talk with whoever was contacting him.

He came back looking incredibly annoyed. “Anakin being reckless again?”

“Unfortunately, he still refuses to listen to me.”

“What’d he do this time?” she asked. “Never mind, it's none of my business.”

“It’s nothing to worry about, my young padawan,” Obi-Wan told her, giving Grim a gentle smile. “Now let’s go back to learning.”

“More Jedi training?” Grim asked him, excitedly.

“No….not exactly.”

“Oh, then what are we learning about?”

“You still have a lot to learn about this universe,” Obi-Wan said gently.

  “What? No I don’t.”

“Grim, this morning you called a therma-slice a toaster.”

“A therma-what?” asked Grim, as if Obi-Wan had said something incredibly stupid. Then she let out a sigh, “Oh I hate Star Wars.”

“You’re joking right?” Obi-Wan asked. There was a long pause as Grim didn’t reply. “You’re joking right?” he asked again.

“Maybe,” she said at last. “Undecided now. What other idiotic words exist outside of therma-slice.” Grim paused, “well, maybe there is something you could help me with?”

“What is it you need help with?”

“Do you think maybe you could teach me how to read…..” Grim asked, looking down slightly embarrassed. “I...Basic is read differently than English....”

“Of course I can teach you,” he gave her a kind smile. “You don’t have to be embarrassed.”

“Really?” she asked, looking up at him with big hopeful eyes.

“Yes,” he replied with a soft smile. “Where do you want to start?”

“Where everyone else starts,” she answered laughing. “Where else?”

Obi-Wan chuckled, “just wanted to make sure.”

He showed Grim to the archives and let her pick out a story, they then went back to their room and Obi-Wan began to teach his padawan how to read. The next few hours were spent as the two Jedi ended up teaching each other how to read the other’s alphabet. Grim taught Obi-Wan the English alphabet while Obi-Wan taught her aurebesh. They even set up a key for themselves. Grim wrote down her alphabet, read each letter out loud (as they sounded the same even if they were written differently,) and he wrote the aurebesh equivalent underneath.
This helped both of them understand what the other was trying to tell them.

Grim smiled at Obi-Wan, “hey, I’m beginning to understand now.”

“I’m glad,” he said. “Well it seems we’ve finished this book, shall we get another one?”

“Alright!” said Grim with a grin. “I can’t wait to learn more.”

They picked out another book and spent more time reading. Once again Obi-Wan helped Grim understand the words, and every once in a while Grim let out a little, “yes!’ or a small “oh, I understand”. Whenever Grim would say these things, Obi-Wan would smile.

Sometimes Grim would groan and say she would never get to read, let alone be a good Jedi. Every time Grim said these things Obi-Wan would put a gentle hand on her shoulder and remind her that learning is always difficult but it would get easier in time. Grim would then smile and try again.

Once more they finished the book and Grim was grinning wide. “I’m getting the hang of it now!”

“That’s good, I’m proud of you, little one,” Obi-Wan told her with a gentle smile. “Let’s take a break from reading and work on something else now.”

“Alright!” she said with a grin. “Can we go back to how to use a lightsaber?” she asked eagerly.

Obi-Wan chuckled, “alright Grim,”

The two went back to the train to use a lightsaber. Obi-Wan guiding Grim through some simple exercises. Grim was grinning the whole time.

Grim lost herself in the movement of the simple moves, as if she were dancing. Following Obi-Wan’s instructions the whole time. It was fun and enjoyable, and though Grim did have some fun learning to read, learning to use a lightsaber was far more fun to her.

It made her feel more like a Jedi, more like she belonged in Star Wars and wasn’t trespassing on other peoples’ lives. When Grim was learning to read, it reminded her that she was just a stranger to this universe and the people in it. Grim knew their futures, their story, and some of their pasts, but they knew nothing about her. She didn’t quite fit in or belong, but that was okay with her. Though sometimes it made her feel strange and alone. She didn’t like being reminded that she was the only one from her universe, that she was alone in the multiverse. Learning how to use a lightsaber, how to meditate, how to use the force, all of this made her feel like she belonged, like she was a Jedi, meant to be a Jedi, Though deep down Grim knew she would always be alone in a foreign universe.

“Grim, are you alright?” Obi-Wan asked her, snapping the padawan out of her thoughts. Grim had begun to cry a little without realizing, a tear falling down her cheek.

“I don’t belong,” she told him. “I don’t belong in this universe, I’m not meant to be a Jedi, I don’t belong here-”

“Listen to me little one, you do belong here,” Obi-Wan told Grim, putting a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Just because you are new to this universe, just because you aren’t from here, doesn’t mean you don’t belong. You belong here, Grim.”

“But, I don’t belong here, I’m from another universe, I was never supposed to be here,” Grim insisted.

“You may not be from here, but that doesn’t mean you don’t belong here,” Obi-Wan told her. “You belong.”

Grim stopped crying and then suddenly wrapped Obi-Wan into a hug, “thank you master.” Obi-Wan was surprised at first before smiling and hugging Grim back. Grim pulled away from the hug with a smile on her face.
“Shall we go back to the lesson?” Obi-Wan’s commlink beeped again. Grim groaned, “way to ruin the moment, my guess is Anakin again.”

Obi-Wan chuckled slightly. “I’ll be right back Grim,” he told her, patting her on the shoulder before leaving to answer.

Grim waited on Obi-Wan to finish his call, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She closed her eyes and took a breath to ease her frustration at the interruption.

Instead Grim chose to focus on all she had learned today. Lightsabers, meditation, and she had even begun to learn how to read Aurebesh, it had indeed been a good day. Despite the interruptions because of something foolish Anakin had done. It was nice and Grim was glad to have truly begun to live a life in the Star Wars universe.

Obi-Wan came back, “sorry about that.”

“Anakin?”

“Anakin,” he confirmed.

“Back to the lesson?” she inquired.

Obi-Wan chuckled, “yes, we can go back to the lesson.”

Once more Obi-Wan helped guide Grim through some simple moves, but this time instead of losing herself in thought Grim paid attention and focused. Grim was grinning the whole time. To her it felt as if she were dancing. Following Obi-Wan’s instructions the whole time.

She did belong and this reminded her that Obi-Wan was right. Despite being from another universe it didn’t mean she didn’t belong in Star Wars any less. Grim was a Jedi, she was the padawan of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and she was going to learn how to be a Jedi, because only if she learns the knowledge can she possibly re-write the story.

Grim was determined to save the Jedi, but first that meant learning, and learning meant patience but she could do it. Grim would be patient, she would learn, learn how to read, learn how to be a Jedi, and she would save them.

Later that night Grim and Obi-Wan once again spent time reading. Obi-Wan was patient with his padawan as he helped her figure out words. Grim was very thankful for that, as she struggled with some words. Though he would always help her through. At some point while the two were reading, nearly finished with the story as well Grim had drifted off to sleep.

When Obi-Wan noticed his padawan had fallen into a peaceful rest he chuckled slightly, “I guess all of today’s learning tired you out.” He picked her up and carried her to her bed, tucking his padawan in, “goodnight Grim,” he said.

“‘Night dad,” she mumbled sleepily.
