The Cafe
You looked at your wallet and sighed. You had money to spend, but it wasn't anything grand. Thank God for saving up.
You tucked it back into your pocket and looked at yourself in the mirror one last time. You fixed your hair up a bit as the door to the apartment opened.
Your mom entered and tossed her keys aside, but she stopped when she spotted you. She smiled.
Mom: Well, what's this?
You lifted your head and smiled at her.
Y/N: Hey.
Mom: Hey, you. What's the occasion?
Y/N: No occasion. I'm just meeting a friend over at that new Cafe.
Your mom nodded.
Mom: A friend? And is this the same friend that you went to dinner with Friday?
You nervously laughed.
Y/N: Y-Yeah. It is.
Mom: Well, have fun. And remember, respect her as a person.
Your mom pulled you down to kiss your head before she headed to her room.
Y/N: I know. Love you.
Mom: Love you too.
She closed her door and you took one last look at yourself.
Damn you looked good.
-----------
Caitlyn leaned in the doorway as she watched her daughter apply makeup for her date with you.
Caitlyn: You know, I was so excited to get a girl after five boys.
Evelynn looked at her mother with her mirror.
Caitlyn: But I also knew that it would mean that I would eventually have to welcome another boy into the family.
Evelynn laughed a bit.
Evelynn: And what if I was gay?
Caitlyn just smiled.
Caitlyn: Then I get another girl. Either way, I want you to be happy.
Evelynn smiled at her mother's words. Being the only women in the large family, the two were very close. It had been that way for as long as Evelynn could remember.
Granted, she was also a huge daddy's girl. Being the only daughter, and the youngest to boot, she was very spoiled.
A fact that all of her brothers knew well.
Caitlyn: You seem very happy with this boy. It just makes me even more excited to meet him.
Evelynn turned around to fully face her mother.
Evelynm: This is only our second date.
Caitlyn: Yet you're head over heels already. It says a lot about him without words. No one has even made you act like this.
She slowly lowered her head.
Caitlyn: No one.
Darius: Then it must mean he's a good man.
Caitlyn smiled when she felt her husband's arm snake around her waist. His hand rested on her hip as she laid her head back against his chest.
Caitlyn: Hello, love. You're home early.
Darius: Decided the case wasn't worth the trouble. Besides, I wanted to see my daughter off this time.
Evelynn: I'm not a kid.
Darius nodded.
Darius: Don't remind me. I swear, two years and this house will be empty.
Caitlyn: But we can do whatever we want.
Evelynn: Like you don't already walk around in your underwear.
Caitlyn: I wear a robe.
Darius: Until she gets to the bedroom.
Caitlyn hummed as she reached up and scratched her husband's beard. Evelynn mocked gagged before she grabbed her bag.
Evelynm: You two are gross. I'm heading out.
Her parents watched her as she headed towards the stairs.
Darius: Be careful. Love you.
Eveylnn: Love you too!
Caitlyn: And remember, a woman who wants to keep a man puts out!
Evelynm: Gross!
Her mother simply laughed as Darius leaned down and kissed her cheek.
Darius: We're going to spy, aren't we?
Caitlyn: Absolutely.
Darius: I'll grab our coats.
------------
You leaned against a sign pole while you scrolled through your phone. You had gotten there a bit earlier than you thought you would, but you didn't mind. It gave you time to catch up on memes.
Y/N: Hehe. Mothman.
Evelynn eventually parked her car and got out. She locked it, grabbed her things, and walked over to you. When you heard someone walking towards you, you looked up and found her.
She looked amazing, as usual, and you suddenly found yourself wonderful why she would waste her time on a loser like you.
Evelynn, however, was all smiles when she spotted you. It was weird but, even though she hasn't known you for very long, she found herself able to relax around you in ways she could really explain.
Y/N: Hey.
You locked your phone and shoved it into your pocket to greet her.
Evelynn: Hey. You didn't wait too long, did you?
Y/N: For you, I'd wait forever.
Evelynn rolled her eyes playfully while you gestured towards the Cafe.
Y/N: Wanna head inside?
Evelynn: Sure.
The two of you walked towards the Cafe, but then another car drove up. Darius and Caitlyn watched the two of you as you approached the small shop.
Caitlyn: Is that him? He's very handsome.
Darius: Hm.
They then watched as you held the door open for Evelynn. She thanked you and entered, you following after.
Darius: He has manners. Good.
You and Evelynn found a table and she gave you her order. You then proceeded to wait in line while Evelynn claimed the table.
Caitlyn: He's paying even though this was her idea? How nice of him.
Darius nodded in agreement.
You got the drinks and snacks and headed over to the table. You set them down and gave Evelynn her things.
Evelynn: Thanks. You know, I could've covered it.
You just waved it off.
Y/N: Nah. This is our second date, right? No point in making you pay.
Evelynn smiled as she sipped on her drink. Second date. Now this was rare. And a third date was all but guaranteed right now. That never happened.
Y/N: So, how did you do on that test today?
Evelynn: The math one?
You nodded.
Evelynn: Good, I hope. I have trouble with math sometimes. Science, too. Numbers are just...hard for me.
Something that the great Evelynn LeBlanc wasn't perfect at? Must be the end of the world.
Y/N: You know, funny enough, those are my two best subjects. Maybe I could tutor you sometime?
Evelynn entertained the idea for a moment.
Evelynn: I would....actually really enjoy that.
You smiled before you took a drink of your coffee.
Evelynn: So, I heard my brother called you into the Student Council room.
You sighed.
Y/N: Yep. He, uh, apologized.
Evelynm: Finally.
Y/N: Then lightly interrogated me.
Evelynn: That jerk.
Y/N: Then invited me over for dinner one day. Which I, politely, declined to save you the embarrassment.
Evelynn looked up.
Evelynn: I...why would I be embarrassed of you?
You raised a brow confused. Did she take that the wrong way?
Evelynn: You're a good guy. And an amazing friend. Plus, you've only really treated me good after the whole almost killing you thing. I think my family would actually love you.
You chuckled a bit.
Y/N: Well, I appreciate that, but I was talking about your family embarrassing you.
Evelynn immediately caught on, and grew a bit red in the cheeks. She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose which made you laugh.
Evelynn: Of course that's what you meant. God, I'm so stupid.
Y/N: It's fine. I get it.
Evelynn: I'm really not embarrassed about you.
Y/N: I know. If you were, you wouldn't have asked me on a date in front of my class.
Evelynn's eyes shot up and she looked at you. You were now sitting upright with your hands cupped on the table.
Eveylnn: I....I did that?
Y/N: Yep. Everyone saw, apparently.
She didn't know what to say. She has never done that before.
Outside, her parents watched amused. They had never seen their daughter so easily embarrassed or stumped.
Evelynn: I, well, I guess....I didn't even think about it.
Y/N: No. Seems to be the case.
Evelynn looked down at her drink, but smiled.
Evelynn: Oh well.
You held up your drink.
Y/N: Oh well, indeed.
She got her drink and you both did a quiet cheers before you both took a drink.
Darius: She's relaxed. Good.
Caitlyn: Very good. And he has a really nice smile. She's been smiling the whole time, too.
Darius turned to his wife with a smile.
Darius: You remember our first date?
Caitlyn looked to her husband.
Caitlyn: Do I remember the time you showed up in a white t-shirt to a barbecue restaurant? Of course I do.
Darius: Well, I meant how fun it was.
Caitlyn hummed as she kissed his cheek.
Caitlyn: Clearly. I did marry you.
You leaned back in your seat and watched Evelynn for a moment. How crazy it was to think that this was your second date. You both talked like you had known each other for years, even though you've only known each other for a few weeks at best.
And if you hadn't made that second of eye contact, maybe you never would've.
Evelynn, on the other hand, found herself pleasantly surpised by how relaxed she felt. She didn't feel the need to be perfect right now. She felt very content with just being here. Somehow, you just made her feel comfortable. Like you enjoyed her company, and not just because she was pretty.
Evelynn: So, what are your plans after highschool?
You shrugged.
Y/N: Work. Make some money, help my mom out, just.....work.
Evelynn: You don't want to go to college?
You shook your head.
Y/N: Never even crossed my mind. School isn't really my thing. How bout you?
Evelynn: Well, college, of course.
Y/N: What will you study?
Evelynn: I'm a bit torn over that. I would love to do criminal justice, but being a doctor also sounds nice.
You nodded. Makes sense she would pick one of those. Her parents were the best in their fields, after all.
Y/N: Sounds like a good plan. Though, you should get on that science and math problem.
Evelynn and you shared a laugh.
Caitlyn: They're so cute. If she doesn't sleep with him, I will.
Darius: He's underage.
Caitlyn: I can wait.
Darius rolled his eyes.
----------
The sun was beginning to set, but you and Evelynn were still talking about random things. These things ranged from school, to friends, to clubs, to hobbies.
Y/N: So you mess around with makeup alot?
Evelynn: Here and there. I like to make art.
She pulled out her phone and showed you some pictures of the things she done. While you knew jack shit about makeup, you had to admit that it looked pretty cool. She really had a talent for it.
Evelynn: And I'm guessing you read a lot of comic books?
You nodded as she put her phone away.
Y/N: Here and there. Mostly like watching movies and hanging out.
Evelynn: With the others?
You shrugged.
Y/N: If they can. Otherwise I fly solo. Surf, skate, I jog in the mornings.
Evelynn seemed surpised by this fact. Though, she figured you were active to some capacity after she had seen you shirtless.
Evelynm: Jog?
Y/N: Yeah. It kinda helps clear my mind and give me time to think about stuff.
Evelynn: What kind of stuff?
Y/N: Uh, war crimes I've committed. The sins of man. Which virgin I'm gonna sacrifice that day. How far could I punt my neighbors' kid.
Evelynn laughed while you just smiled. Really, you thought about your life. How to help your mom and how to keep her from working herself to death. But, you didn't want to bring down the mood.
Evelynn: Is the kid an asshole?
Y/N: Absolutely. The little shit once pissed on my shoes.
Evelynn: No.
You nodded. You had never wanted to strangle a child, but that day, that day you understood why people commit murder.
Y/N: They were my favorite pair, too.
Back outside, Darius and Caitlyn were still watching the two of you. They were actually very relieved to see how you treated their daughter. You haven't made a move at her, gotten annoyed, or even said anything to upset her.
You.....you were a keeper.
Plus, it seemed like you were having a good time yourself.
Caitlyn: Hm.
Darius: Hm.
The two sat there for a moment.
Caitlyn: Let's go introduce ourselves.
Darius: Of course.
You and Evelynn laughed some more as you told her the story of your neighbor peeing on your shoes. The bell above the door rang, but you didn't even bother to look who it was.
Evelynn: That's terrible.
Y/N: I know. I just had to wash them about 12 times.
Evelynn finally stopped and looked at you. She couldn't wipe this smile off of her face. She didn't want to.
Evelynn: I have to say...this is nice.
You nodded in agreement.
Y/N: I feel the same way. Thank you for inviting me out.
Evelynn: Thank you for paying. I'm glad that you agreed to come.
You looked at her confused.
Y/N: Why wouldn't I?
Evelynn shrugged.
Evelynn: I dunno. I figured that after we made peace that you would, you know, go back to hiding away.
Right. You could see why she would think that. You slowly reached out and gently placed your hand ontop of hers. She smiled and turned her hand over so you were both holding each other's.
Y/N: Sorry, but you're stuck with me now. The truce is still on.
Evelynn smiled.
Evelynn: Good.
Darius: Very good.
You and Evelynn looked up and found her parents standing there. Smiles on their faces.
While you were confused in who these people were, Evelynn immediate grew red in embarrassment.
Y/N: Uh, hi?
Caitlyn: Hello. You must be the Y/N our Eve has told us about.
Our Eve?
Oh.
Oh.
These were her parents.
