Chapter 13

Tony glanced from Abi to Steve and back to the screen. "I know that road." Tony's mind flashed back to the night he got the call. He had driven out to that road as fast as he could, but he had already been too late. He turned back to Zemo. "What is this?"

Zemo didn't reply and Abi stepped closer to Bucky. She couldn't stop this now, if she did Tony would just find another way to figure it out. The wheels had already been set in motion and one way or another they were going to reach their destination. The video was grainy but everything was still visible. The car crashed into a tree as a motorbike streaked past. Tony moved closer to the screen as the car's engine caught fire and the bike swung back into the shot. The gleam of a metal arm was very visible as Steve carefully watched Tony's reaction.

Howard crawled out of the car towards Bucky. "Help my wife." Howard's voice was strained in pain. "Please, help."

Bucky just walked forward and pulled Howard's head up by his hair. One of Howard's hands shot up to try and alleviate the pressure on his scalp. Bucky raised his metal arm into the air but froze as Howard looked upon him with recognition.

"Sergeant Barnes?" Howard sounded almost hopeful.

"Howard?" As Maria's voice came over the speakers Tony turned to Bucky. Bucky kept his gun trained on Zemo. His hands were steady but his breathing was jagged and his eyes were filled with regret and guilt.

Tony's gaze was brought back to the screen as Bucky's metal arm came down once, twice and then a third time on Howard's face. Howard dropped to the floor as Maria called out for him again, this time with more panic in her voice. Bucky dragged Howard back into the car and set up the body to look like he had been killed on the impact. Bucky walked around to the passenger side of the car. The angle of the video meant that they couldn't see exactly what happened but they could tell that Bucky had killed her as well. When it was done, he walked back around and walked over to the camera. He raised his gun and shot once; the video went dark.

Steve and Abi both turned to face Tony. Steve was stood behind him at the screen as Abi stood in front of him, between him and Bucky. Steve caught his sister's eyes as they shared an understanding that she didn't even have to use her telepathy for. Tony started towards Bucky but Steve grabbed his arm.

"No, Tony!" Steve shot Abi another glance as her hands started to glow and Bucky turned away from Zemo to face Tony. He looked at Steve nervously over her shoulder.

Tony turned towards Steve with tears in his eyes. The bruise under his left eye seemed to have somehow got darker. "Did you know?"

"I didn't know it was him." Steve told him.

"Don't bullshit me, Rogers. Did you know?" Tony was struggling to stay in control and Abi could see it in his mind.

"Yes." Steve never broke eye contact.

Tony pushed him away and took a step back. Tony looked towards the screen again and clenched his jaw. Without warning, he spun around and hit Steve across the floor. Steve went flying as Tony's helmet appeared and covered his face. He turned towards Abi and Bucky and fired off a blaster. Abi deflected the blast easily but he sent another towards Bucky. Bucky's gun went flying to the floor.

"Tony!" Abi tried but he sent several rockets towards her. They hit the ceiling just above her and the wall and all the equipment fell to the ground. She raised a shield around herself but still found herself surrounded by debris.

Bucky ran at Tony but Tony grabbed his arm. Zemo left the room as Tony gripped a hand around Bucky's throat and started flying across the room. He flew Bucky into the ground and brought his foot down on Bucky's metal arm to keep him down. He raised his left hand and aimed the blaster at Bucky's head.

Steve had recovered and threw his shield at Tony. Tony was knocked off position slightly and the blast hit just to the right of Bucky's head rather than making its mark. Steve's shield ricocheted back to him and he ran at Tony. He pushed Tony back as Abi used her powers to pull Bucky out of the middle towards her. Steve ran at Tony again but Tony hit his shield dead on with both feet, sending Steve flying backwards. Tony launched a clamp that secured Steve's ankles together, rendering him momentarily powerless.

Abi threw a large piece of metal from the wall collapse towards him but he sliced it easily in half. She dived to the side to avoid a blast and landed a kick to his abdomen. Tony fell to the floor as Abi pulled Steve's shield towards her. She gripped it in both hands and went to bring it down on the arc reactor but Tony blasted away from her and deployed another clamp that secured itself around her wrists. Steve's shield clattered to the floor as she put the full force of her powers into breaking them.

Bucky landed a punch on Tony's jaw but Tony grabbed him with both hands around his neck. Tony flew him backwards into one of the tanks and raised his blaster. Bucky grabbed it with his metal arm and pulled it away from his face. Bucky clenched his fist as hard as he could and a crack spread threw the palm of the suit and destroyed the blaster. Tony primed the rockets in the suits wrist and Bucky barely had enough time to point Tony's arm to the right before the rockets discharged. They went flying across the room and brought another section of the wall down.

Abi ran over to Steve and pulled the clamps off his ankles before pulling him to his feet. They both set off running before they noticed that this time the rocket had also taken down one of the central towers. Abi pushed Steve backwards and simultaneously used her powers to pull Bucky out of Tony's grip and away from the falling tower. Tony went falling the other side as Abi had to dive out of the way of more falling debris. Bucky got to his feet as Steve pulled Abi up. They were on the opposite side of a large piece of debris to Bucky.

"Get out of here!" Abi gestured towards the door as she met Bucky's eyes.

He hesitated for a moment, looking between the twins, but then he turned as started running. He made it down the stairs as Tony sent a blast over his head. Bucky hit the button for the roof as Abi and Steve jumped into Tony's path, blocking to exit. The roof started to open and daylight started to stream in. Tony started hovering above the ground.

"It wasn't him Tony." Steve tried to get through to him. "Hydra had control of his mind!"

"Move!" Tony ignored him.

"It wasn't him!" Abi screamed as Tony went to fly over them but she caught him with her powers. She damaged one of the blasters on his feet before throwing him into a wall. Tony quickly sent a blast that hit her in the stomach. She went flying backwards as Steve tried to run at Tony. Tony raised his arm and used his laser to slice down the roof and cut them off behind a wall of debris.

"Left boot jet failing." Friday informed Tony. Tony ignored her and took off after Bucky who had already climbed halfway up. "Flight systems compromised." Tony started to wobble in the air and was forced to land on one of the metal grates that lined the walls.

"Ah, crap." Tony muttered as he looked at his boot.

However, he ignored Friday's warning again and took off. Bucky had started climbing faster as he tried to jump to the next level, Tony kicked him down.

Abi blasted through the debris just before Tony landed the kick. There was blood running down from under her shirt but she ignored it as she shared a look with Steve. Steve nodded. Simultaneously, she pushed Bucky safely onto a grate and threw Steve in front of him. Steve immediately raised his shield to deflect Tony's blast. The blast ricocheted off the shield and hit Tony straight in the chest. Tony went flying across the room as Abi flew up and landed in front of Steve and Bucky.

"Abi." Bucky reached out and rested one hand on her waist as the other moved her shirt to look at the blast wound.

She shook her head. "He's not going to stop. You need to go." Bucky looked as though he was going to argue but Steve also nodded his head. Bucky set off running again as Steve turned to his sister.

"Sure you're alright?"

"I've had worse." She smiled.

Tony got to his feet and blasted off. Steve looked prepared to jump but Abi pushed him backwards and grabbed the grappling hook from Steve's belt. She jumped as Tony flew up and shot the hook towards him. It wrapped around the neck of the suit and her momentum and body weight sent them both hurtling towards the ground. Tony hit a grate first and stopped falling and Abi hit one lower down. She struggled to get to her feet as Tony aimed his working blaster upward to where Bucky was nearly out. Before he could fire, Steve sent his shield up but Tony blasted it to the ground.

"C'mon. C'mon." Tony tried to get a lock on Bucky with his last rocket.

"Targeting system's knackered, boss." Friday informed him.

"I'm eyeballing it." Tony retracted his helmet and aimed the rocket at the roof's hinge mechanism. He fired and the rocket hit its target.

Bucky had just made it to the top and was forced to jump down as the roof snapped shut. He landed hard as Tony replaced his helmet and took off. Bucky got to his feet and grabbed a metal bar. As Tony reached the platform, he swung the bar and struck Tony on the side of the head. Tony recovered quickly and Bucky swung again. Tony blocked and ripped the bar out of Bucky's grip. Tony got behind Bucky and locked an arm around his neck. Bucky clawed at the arm of the suit.

"Do you even remember them?" Tony spat.

"I remember them all." Bucky choked out.

Abi flew up to the platform and kicked Tony's legs out. Tony fell backwards. Bucky who was still locked in Tony's grip went with him and Tony grabbed Abi's leg and she went to. She hit her head on the grate as she fell and was too disorientated to catch any of them. The blasters in the back of Tony's suit tried to keep them up but the combined weight was too much for them on their own. Steve jumped into Tony and that was all it took for the blasters to pack in completely and send all four of them plummeting to the floor. Steve and Tony escaped relatively well and rolled down the slope at the bottom into the basement. Abi managed to stick her hand out and soften Bucky's landing with her powers. He hit the last grate hard but she hit it harder. All the air left her lungs, the back of her skull made a sickening cracking noise and her ankle snapped. Her head lulled to one side and she lost consciousness.
