Chapter 6: First Experiences are Painful

Outside of Misty Mountain

Me, Cord, and Abby were walking down the forest leading up to Misty Mountain when I just stopped out of nowhere. I had to admit, the view from the bottom looking up to the peak from the mountain was a lot more surprising than what I originally thought it would be. I'll probably have to get used to this, since Cord's map showed there were more mountains here around this continent.

"Lucas, are you coming or not?" Cord said looking back at me.

I shook my head out of concentration, and responded, "Yeah, I'm coming!" I ran toward Abby and Cord and followed along once again...

'Cord we need to talk via telepathy because it's about telepathy.' No one talked for a couple of moments while getting ever so closer to the huge mountain in front of us. The window of opportunity was closing... 'Come on, Cord. Respond!'

Cord moved his head while moving forward to look at me. Did you call?

I took a sigh of relief and nodded... 'Remember when you heard shouting in the waterfall earlier today?'

Yeah... Did someone speak to you using telepathy?

'Yup. Here's the thing though. The voice that spoke to me sounded like a female, almost like Abby's. But she can't do telepathy since she's a Normal type... I think.'

Cord squinted his eyes soon after, and asked the question that was pretty obvious to ask. Please don't tell me who ever it was knew that you were human.

Okay, I won't tell you.

Abby finally barged in, and yelled, "Hey Cord! Lucas!" She looked back at the two of us. "Misty Mountain is just up ahead!" After a few seconds of her stopping, we could see her start to run towards the mountain. "Last one there is a rotten Exeggcute!"

We both stopped to look at each other. "You know I'm not backing down from a challenge," the Raichu said grinning soon after. I slowly nodded, and next thing you know, both of us started running to catch up to the little Eevee. One thing's for sure, though.

I'm never going to use Pokémon puns the same way ever again.

Misty Mountain 1F

With Abby and Cord giving death stares at me, something had to be wrong. "Lucas, you are a complete cheater," The Eevee said, sitting down soon after.

"Am not!" My eyes stared back at Abby while my arms folded. When I turned to Cord, he shook his head and sighed.

"Manny, you used Quick Attack to get here a few seconds faster," he responded to my lie. "That counts as cheating."

I didn't even want to admit what I did, so I blurted out, "I'm sorry, but it's not my fault that I'm not used to this body yet!" I paused myself soon after realizing that the statement I made kinda makes me sound crazy. "But fine, I guess you win Abby."

My arm went around Abby as I quickly apologized, but she didn't even forgive me! She asked, "What do you mean by 'not used to this body'?" Seriously, who does—...

Crap.

"We'll explain later," Cord said. He looked exasperated at me right now, and a grin with my hand behind my neck was my only response.

Abby started moving around me in different directions, looking from the top of my head to behind me looking at my tail. Sweat came out of me because of nerves... And probably the realization that she could have found out who I am

"Abby, Lucas is sweating a lot because you're looking at him now. Can you please stop doing that so we can start the mission?" Cord asked, trying to get her attention away from me.

After a few seconds, Abby groaned and slowly nodded to both of us. "But I'm only doing that because Chris is somewhere around here."

Objective:

Find Chris!

While a sigh of relief came to me, I suddenly realized something. "You know, you still haven't told us why Chris even would be here." We were all starting to walk aimlessly into a pathway.

"Well..." Abby looked down thinking. "Me and him were trying to head back into civilization, when we just ran out of supplies to continue further. I knew I should have planned this beforehand."

"Where would you even go that would need that many supplies to be used?" Cord glanced at Abby before moving ahead of us.

"That is none of your business... Anyway, we took a break in a fruit-bearing tree, and lo and behold, Misty Mountain was in the viewing distance. Chris wanted to do this himself, but I didn't want him to go there. We both went to sleep, and when I woke up, he was gone."

"Wait, wait, wait," Cord stopped to look at the two of us—especially at Abby. "Why didn't you want Chris to go through this dungeon by himself? He should be more experienced than you since he is older."

I didn't wonder why Cord put that logic together because Abby quickly responded. "Well here's the thing..." She slowly raised her head and turned around to fire a dark ball behind her. An explosion went in the distance, hitting something unknown toward me and Cord. In the distance, a Geodude laid on the floor, dazed. Right then and there, I realized what just happened.

Abby used Shadow Ball.

My eyes gave a slow reaction as they widened. "What the heck? How did you do that?!"

The Eevee chuckled before pointing at her long ears. "These ears can hear any enemies from a distance, ahead or behind. So you're welcome."

The Raichu shook his head while sighing. "Nevermind that. Can you answer the question I asked?"

"Right, sorry... How do I put this to words?" I was expecting something like "This dungeon would be extremely hard for the both of us," or "it would be too risky to go there without supplies," and etcetera. But I didn't expect her to blurt this out.

"Chris has never been in a mystery dungeon before."

It took us four quick blinks and us fully stopping to realize what she just said. "What!?" We both yelled, creating an echo across the floor. Me and Cord quickly looked at each other and gave our attention back to Abby. "How is that even possible?"

"Well, Chris got an injury when he was young that paralyzed his lower body. And it was a lot worse than our family ever expected," Abby explained while chuckling softly. "I didn't expect he would just jump into one without me."

You've got to be kidding me. He must have just gotten cured of the paralysis somehow and wanted to go explore this continent. This was going to be harder than I initially thought.

We continued climbing Misty Mountain while also fighting any enemies that stood in our way. To also mention, Cord was grabbing random items that would probably be useful for later occurrences.

But alas, we were getting close to the peak of the mountain with still no sight of Chris. "Well, we almost got the supplies for the rest of the trip to the Golden Coast. Just missing a Blast Seed." Cord mumbled to himself before looking back at Abby. "Also, if Chris isn't in these last few floors, I don't know where he could be."

Abby started to droop her head down with a gloomy face. I, for some weird reason, decided to put my paw over her back. "Look..." I said pausing myself for a moment, "I promise Chris will be here. We've just got to keep on looking. And if he isn't here, then we just gotta keep on looking anyway. Because right now, it's the only thing we can do."

Abby's frown turned into a smile, but it wasn't by much. At this point, I had to agree with Cord. If Chris isn't on these floors, I wouldn't have a clue to where we could find him.

I'm just hoping we can have one clue into finding him...

A large roar suddenly echoed from the roof, floor, everywhere! The three of us immediately looked up, which was the direction the majority of the sound came from. A few moments after, I put my head back down to see other Pokémon—the ones supposed to be hostile—looking up, hearing the roar as well. It looks like the entire floor is looking up. If it's not the entire floor...

Then the entire dungeon is hearing this sound.

"Chris!" Abby started running in the direction of the stairs. It made her earlier run in the race seem like nothing.

So we had no choice but to follow suit.

Misty Mountain 18F -> 19F (Stairs)

"Abby!" I yelled at her from the stairs, "The next time you run without warning, please tell us ahead!"

She finally stopped at the end of the stairs, leading up to the next floor. But meanwhile, me and somehow Cord got immensely exhausted from running three straight floors trying to chase down Abby. That may not seem like much, but if you look at the stairs separating each floor—which were a lot longer than I even imagined—you probably would even get exhausted from that.

Maybe even collapse.

Anyway, after we finished climbing the stairs, I started laying down in the ground out of complete exhaustion. "What the hell?" I yelled while panting loudly.

"Abby, why did you run like that?" Cord also yelled while looking at her. I, too, turned my head in her direction to hear a response.

The Eevee could be starting to clear her throat. "I guess I should start with this: I was holding back in the race earlier. Also, the voice we heard earlier." Both of us could see Abby out of breath. "That was Chris' voice."

"How do you know that?" Cord asked.

"You think I wouldn't know my brother's voice like the back of my paw? I know it's him."

"...She does have a point." Cord stared at me when I made the statement. 'Remember when I figured out who you were in the dream...?'

"Fine," Cord sighed, "But where would he be on this floor?"

"Hey!" All of us turned to the direction—north—of the voice. What was right in front of us confused me and Cord. It was an Eevee with silver fur, and he was staring us down for some reason.

"Chris?" Abby shouted, making me turn my head.

"Wait, Chris is a shiny Eevee?" The Eevee next to me tilted her head confused.

"Shiny?" Abby shouted out loud. "If you mean alternate colored, yes is one of those."

...Oh, right. Shiny isn't a term here. Cord could be seen hopping down his tail and taking a few steps back frightened.

"I don't think that's Chris in there."

Me and Abby turned our heads to Cord. "Excuse me?"

"Look at the eyes." The two of us looked at the Eevee closer, and we realized something was completely off.

Its eyes had a flame trail.

I took a step back frightened. "Oh, no."

"Why does Chris have those eyes?" Abby tilted her head. The Eevee put his paw out and looked at all of us with a smirk. Its paw suddenly darkened and his claws extended... Oh no.

He's using Shadow Claw.

"Get out of the way!" Me and Cord yelled at Abby. The shiny Eevee charged toward all three of us twice as fast as a normal Eevee would. Me and Cord jumped—well technically Cord hovered—our way out of Chris' route. Meanwhile, Abby anticipated this and got into a ready stance... And blocked the shot by using... I think it's called Protect.

Anyway, she pushed Chris back, and I knew it was either my or Cord's time to make a move. Cord was charging energy for some reason across from me, so I ran toward him. A couple of swings of Iron Tail toward him didn't do much as he blocked all of them.

And he launched me toward the air using Shadow Ball. The Raichu was still charging in the exact same spot. "Cord!" I yelled at him. "What are you doing?" He said a statement after that confused me.

"You feel it, right?" My head turned confused as I landed on the ground face first. A groan exited my mouth as I asked him what was going on. "Do you feel the energy coming out of Chris?"

I looked at the Eevee; he was still in the same form with his eyes flaming brightly. "I don't feel anything!"

Cord sighed. "Right, you haven't learned about that yet... Look, Chris' energy is higher than I originally thought he was. His power is pretty high, and I'm afraid it's not going to stop anytime soon."

Abby moved closer to me concerned about my health, but I waved her off nonchalantly. "I'm fine, Abby. What's your point Cord?"

Some sparks were showing on Cord's electric cheeks. "I'm going to end this with one shot before he overpowers the three of us combined. I'm charging up my attack now, so you two need to stall until I tell you it's ready."

Me and Abby both looked at each other. We've only known each other for about three hours, and had more arguments than actual opportunities to work together. And even then, we did things separately. "If we do this," I blurted out, "I-I promise I'll remember you." I took out my paw and grinned.

To be honest, I don't know why I said this, only it was for a real reason. The Eevee smiled, shook it quickly, and only said three words.

"Let's do this."

We both take off—with Abby being slightly faster than me—and we both ended up hitting Chris at the same time. A flurry of Iron Tail, punches, kicks, and Bite—provided by Abby—pushes Chris back far enough that our short bursts of attack worked. As a final move, me and Abby jump back to fire a projectile. Abby opens her mouth to charge Shadow Ball...

Meanwhile, an Electro Ball gets formed somehow out of my paw, and it was about the size of a baseball—half the size from an actual Electro Ball... These legs are short, but it's going to have to do.

I started to cover my right paw—the one that has the Electro Ball—with my left paw, then moved both of them towards my right shoulder. "Almost ready, Abby?" She nodded, confused of what I was about to do. "Good. Let's do this."

Okay, I'm going to have to explain this first. Before I ever turned into a Pokémon, I used to be a pitcher in a baseball team from a local league in Jersey City. I was known for my fastball throwing since the speed was unlike anyone knew for my age back then. Unfortunately, I got injured in my upper right arm, ending my season short. Now with my arm fully healed, I could give it everything I got.

I moved both my arms down toward my hip area and took a deep breath. "Give it all the speed I got!"

Right there, I start to do my windup by raising my left leg. Once it's at the most comfortable position, my left arm moves ahead first to get enough power for my other arm. When I moved my right arm, my left leg landed directing the Electro Ball, and threw the Electro Ball at the same time Abby fired her Shadow Ball.

It wasn't the hardest I've thrown, but nonetheless, it caused an immense explosion when it collided with Chris and Abby's Shadow Ball.

The Eevee glanced at me. "Lucas, what the heck was that?"

...Oh, damn it! I did something that was hinting towards my humanity. "That's another explanation I'll talk about later."

"Guys," Cord said, "it's ready!"

We ran toward him and Cord gave me an orb. It glowed on my paws, making me unknowingly smile. "This activates when I use my attack... I will faint after this attack is used, so listen up. When this attack is over, take me and Chris to the next floor. That's the peak of this mountain. There's going to be a cabin, where you all can stay until both of us revive. Got it?"

"Okay?" I lost him when he said floor.

Cord used teleport to get right next to Chris to unleash his move.

"Final Explosion!" Cord's storage cheeks turned from red to white and a huge ball engulfed him and Chris. Right then, an explosion happened about five times larger than me and Abby's explosion moments ago.

The shockwave came right toward us as we braced for impact but... We were sent flying anyway. The two of us hit the wall in the rocky room, causing whiplash. I blacked out...

Or so I thought.
