Chapter Nine

Jonas's POV

I made my way through the gates of Tashbaan a few days later, knowing that I had to tell him the news. I didn't know his first name, only his last, although he insisted that I call him 'master'. I could still remember the day he took me away from everything. It was the night I had saved Elsa from her mother's wolves back when we were kids. I had been woken up only short while after having fallen asleep. It was dark, and I remembered being pulled up off of the ground, and a menacing voice whispering in my ear, "Leave now, and the girl doesn't get hurt." So I had left without a word, hoping that Elsa would be okay.

Meanwhile, I dodged my way through the streets of Tashbaan, only stopping when a Tarkaan or Tarkheena would be carried through, and others had to stop out of respect.

I finally reached his house. It was large and white, with three stories and a grand garden out back. It was almost fit for a Tarkaan. Taking a deep breath, I entered, nervous as to what his reaction would be to the news that I couldn't find what he ordered me to.

*******

"YOU WHAT?!"

I shuddered at the man's tone. I had just explained to him that I wasn't able to find the Glass Apple, no matter where in Narnia I searched.

"I'm sorry, master, I tried-"

"WELL YOU DIDN'T TRY HARD ENOUGH!"

"But-"

"No but's," he growled, "You disobeyed me, and you know what happens when you disobey me, don't you?"

I gulped. I knew what was coming, and I only wished that there was some way I could prevent it.

Elsa's POV

I sat in the bench before the bay window in my bedroom, examining the apple made of glass. It was a few days after Jonas's disappearance, and Rilian and I had eventually explained to the Pevensie's about the glass apple. At the moment, I was trying to figure out its significance, and why it was magical. I knew that it had been from the moment I picked it from the tree in the Dancing Lawn that day, but I didn't know how or why. After about fifteen minutes of examining it, I decided to take the apple with me to the castle's library. Perhaps I could find some information about it there.

I scoured the tables of contents of books for hours. I searched in those about prophesies, folklore, history, and a majority of the few books on Narnian legends. I resorted to scanning the titles of the books on the selves, and one titled Legends of Narnian Magic caught my eye. It was the only legends book I hadn't opened yet.

I looked through the table of contents until my eyes landed on a specific chapter title; The Glass Apple. Turning to the indicated page, I began to read;

The legend of the Glass Apple originated during the reign of King Frank II of Narnia. The legend stated that around the time of the king's great, great, great grandson's reign, a magical apple made of glass would grow on a tree located somewhere in Narnia. Many stories were told involving it, but no storyteller knew the real location of the Apple. Some would say the Western Wood, others would say the Dancing Lawn, and still others would tell of a mystical tree that only certain people could see, growing juicy, red apples, excluding one lone apple made of glass that reflected the light in such a way that the most magnificent rainbow shown. The Glass Apple was said to have powers so great that they could be used to take control of a whole country in just one day. Most likely, this is just a well-woven tale from storytellers, but should the Glass Apple actually exist, it should never be placed into the wrong hands.

I stopped reading and closed the book. This was not good. Rilian and I were going to have to keep the Glass Apple under tight watch.

And the plot thickens....

What do you guys think so far? How do you feel about Jonas? And the question is still popping up: who do you think 'he' is?
