173. A Slippery Slope
And so it was.
Max stood upon the icy ground, not moving much as he was concerned about slipping on the ice.
Ken, on the other hand, was standing on solid ground. So he had no worries about slipping.
Max: (thinking: I gotta be careful.)
Max's eyes gave the icy ground a look.
Ken: (thinking: And now, for the next part of my plan.)
He knew for sure that Max would be wary of moving. He knew that. That was what any ordinary person would be thinking. "Just don't move and everything will be fine."
And at the moment, the ice on the ground was solidly frozen.
Ken: Ready?
Max: Hmph.
How could he back down?
Back at the scene of those watching the fight...
Luke: (to Tiffany) Well... this is getting interesting.
Tiffany: Yeah. (thinking: This is gonna be close.)
Rose gulped as she watched.
Julianne: (thinking: Well sweetie, what are you gonna do now?)
Max couldn't move, but he could still fire electric blasts fast enough to beat Ken at a "blast off."
However, Max could no longer change his position quickly.
But still, it was apparent to everyone watching as well as those fighting...
As long as Max refused to move, he still had the advantage.
And then, it started...
Max, with his super speed started swiping his hands, firing electric blasts while Ken started firing laser blasts in quick succession, their collisions ending in small but powerful explosions of red and blue.
Those watching noted the beauty of the battle...
Rose: It's so pretty....
Tiffany noted that, but was more concerned with something else.
The electric blasts flying towards Ken vastly out numbered the laser blasts, and so, Ken was getting hit over and over.
However, he kept firing lasers irregardless.
As for Max, not a single laser had hit him. He was fine, completely and absolutely.
Tiffany: (thinking: This fight is over. Max just has way to much of an advantage right now.)
She straightened out her right hand as she watched the fight go on. Max was landing hits over and over, and Ken was almost on his knees.
Tiffany: (thinking: It's over: Max wins.)
And just as she was about to give the victory to Max, something interesting happened.
Max suddenly lost his balance
Max: Woah!
And then, he slipped, much to everyone's surprise, and fell on the icy ground with a thud.
Rose: Max!
Back at the battlefield...
Ken took a deep breath.
Ken: Finally. It happened.
Max: Huh!?
Ken: You fell!?
Max: But...
Ken: You were careful not to move. I know. But I was counting on that.
Max: What!?
His hands rubbed against the icy floor, it was way more slippery than before.
Max: This floor... it's....
Ken: Heat travels through the atmosphere, from molecule to molecule, and....
He turned to the smoke in the air as a result of the explosions caused by their attacks colliding.
Ken: ... from explosions to the icy floor beneath them. Of course, combine those with your little upper body movements trying to hit me... and.... the end was inevitable. In short, my lasers weren't meant for offense. I was stalling.
Max pulled his wet hands from the ground, noting how soaked they were before slipping again.
Max: Dang it!
Back with those watching...
Rose: Ken....
Luke: (whistle) That was smart.
Tiffany: Yeah. (thinking: Should've figured you'd have some kind of back up plan, Ken.)
Julianne: (thinking: That kid... he's a lot smarter than he looks. A lot smarter.)
Her eyes turned to the rest of the kids.
Julianne: (thinking: These kids.... they're no joke.)
Back at the battlefield...
Ken was staring down a Max that was on the ground, struggling to get up.
Max tried once again, and again, and again. Meanwhile, Ken's eyes turned red.
Ken: Now then... of course, because my lasers are deadly to humans, I'll hit you with just enough to knock you down. Sound good?
Max: Tch...
Juat mere moments ago, it was Max who was taunting Ken. Now, the roles had reversed.
This situation naturally annoyed Max, however, he did expect that something like this could happen.
The problem?
He didn't expect his counterattack to catch him off guard so much.
Ken: If you try to use superspeed, you'll slip. And without a firm hold on the ground, you're liable to slip if you try to to stand up. Also, you can't even maintain your posture long enough to land a blow. In short... it's over.
Max: Mmmmmmm.....
Back with those watching...
Rose: Max....
Tiffany: (thinking: That's just how Ken is. He's a sharp opponent. I should know. Amongst the four of us, hes usually the toughest to beat.)
Luke: (thinking: So, Max... how are you gonna get out of this one?)
Julianne: (thinking: C'mon sweetie, you can think of something, right?)
Julianne didn't want to vocally support her son. After all, she'd rather her son dealt with it the hard way. But even more importantly, she didn't want to interrupt him in his fight.
Back at the fight...
Ken: Well....
Max: Mmmm.....
There were a lot of things on Max's mind at the time. For one thing, this was his chance to beat each and every team member.
Another thing, his own mother was watching this fight.
That was enough of a load to bear.
But on top of all that, he was about to lose. And, to be honest with himself, he was out of ideas.
