73. The Spider Bots
The van approached the scene aggressively, as there was hardly a soul to be seen in the near vicinity.
Tiffany: Rose? Can you sense any civillians outside the tower?
They were only one minute away, and at that point, they could see a few spider bots.
Rose: Yeah. But not too many of them near us. Max did a great job.
Tiffany exhaled in relief. Max was fine, and the people were safe and far away from them.
Meanwhile, the spider bots, taking notice of them, started to follow the van.
Tiffany: (to Max) Max, we're almost there. Are you done?
Max: I think I'm done.
Tiffany: Rose says there's still some civillians out there.
Max: Huh? Where?
Max zipped to and fro, trying to see what he'd missed.
Tiffany: Rose! Connect to Max and direct him.
Rose flinched immediately before calmimg down.
Rose: R... right...
She turned on her earpiece.
Rose: Max?
Max: Yeah?
Rose: So... uhhh... where are you?
Max: Outside this japanese restaurant called Sushi Time.
Rose: That's three streets away. Ok. Max. From where you are, travel about 700 metres East. Theres two people over there.
Max: Right.
There was a silence for about a second as Max rushed to them to find two people hiding from a trio spider bots near them, which he promptly blasted.
Max: Ok, I found them.
Rose sighed in relief.
Rose: Great, we did it!
Max: Yeah.
Tiffany: Alright. Great job. Now find the others.
Tiffany quickly turned to the rest of them.
Tiffany: Ken, are there any people left in X-corp?
Ken: I've scanned their security cameras. I don't think anyone there is alive.
Tiffany: I see.
Tiffany turned the earpiece back on.
Tiffany: Max, keep at it!
Max: Got it!
Tiffany paused for a second before answering.
Tiffany: Alright. Rose?
Rose: Uh huh. I'll direct him.
At that point, several spider bots were chasing after them, shooting lasers and making the van unsteady, and causing them to hit the wall every once in a while.
Luke: Tch. Come on...
Luke made a sharp turn with the van as they got closer.
Tiffany: Alright, here's the plan.
She brandished her katana in her hand.
Tiffany: We'll keep them busy while Max rescues the people in the vicinity. Our attack may be able to draw their attention.
Luke: Alright.
Luke made another sharp turn and drove right into the belly of the beast, bashing into several spider bots all at once.
Rose: Right.
Ken: Get me one of the robots to work with. Maybe I can hack into one of them and stop all of them at once.
Tiffany: Hmph. Alright.
Luke stopped the van as the spider bots surrounded them, and he and Tiffany came out of the van in masks of their own.
Tiffany immediately started cutting them to bits while Luke ripped them apart and crushed them.
Tiffany cut one in half and threw the pieces into the car, which Ken then quickly picked up. All the while, Rose gave directions to Max.
Rose: I can sense someone 500 metres South.
Max: Alright.
Max sped into the more northward part of the area. There were fewer spider bots the further away one had gotten from X-corp, but even then, the wake of destruction there was brutally apparent with dead bodies here and there.
Max: Ok, I've got her.
Rose: Right. Mmmmmm... 200 metres West.
Max: Got it.
Max walked into a building and led a few grown adults as well as children through a safe path while blasting the few spider bots in his way.
Meanwhile, Tiffany and Luke ruthlessly destroyed the robots with ease while Ken tinkered with the pieces he had inside of the van.
Ken: (thinking: A whole specimen could have been more useful, but whatever.)
As he began to scan one half of the bit, one thing became increasingly apparent to him.
He suddenly stopped tinkering and turned to the other half and lasered it till it melted just as it had, on its own, gotten up on its legs.
Tiffany and Luke had begun to notice it, too.
Once a robot was destroyed, even though it took a little while, the bot would eventually reform all on its own.
Tiffany: What the...
Luke: Just what are these things. Hey, Ken.
Ken turned on the earpiece channel to all of them.
Ken: Everyone, listen up.
They all perked their ears to hear him clearly.
Ken: These robots. They're not just some spider bots. They're next gen. As in next next gen.
Max: Huh?
Tiffany: Elaborate.
She swiftly cut two more apart before deflecting two more lasers.
Ken: Each of these bots is made up of small nanomachines. You can't see them because whoever made them is just that good.
Tiffany: I see.
Luke: So, what's your point, Einstein?
Luke stomped on one of them before crushing the others with his bare fists.
Ken: My point is, these robots can't be destroyed until a substantial amount of those nanobots are destroyed.
