FIVE: Zadkiel
We all walked into the office together and I immediately slumped on my chair, "what do we have to do for today?" I asked with my eyes closed, expecting a response but none came. "Josephine, Gabriel, what do we have to go for today?" I asked again and slowly opened my eyes; only to see them staring at me with smirks on their faces.
I groaned when I realized what that meant and I shook my head vehemently. I had successfully ignored them and their theories when classes were on, but now that I'm alone with them; there's no escaping.
"I'm not in the mood to entertain your theories, let's get to work," I said with a stoic look on my face. Trying to pull the serious president card, but they just glanced at each other then turned back to me and scoffed.
"That's not going to work on us, Zadkiel!" They chorused and I sighed. They were annoying on a normal basis, but when they begin that twin telepathy nonsense, they get on a whole new level of annoyance.
"We want answers and we want them now" they chanted together and I slowly massaged my temples. I thought I could tolerate them out of everyone else in this school. How wrong I was.
I glared at the both of them, hoping it would faze them and they'd cut it out, but all they did was close their eyes. According to them, my glares don't work if they can't see it. "How did I end up becoming friends with you guys?" They cackled and slowly opened their eyes, "and worst of all, how did I end up working with you guys?"
"Well, it began in the year 2020 when....."
"If you don't shut up right now, I'm going to seal your mouth for eternity. Try me" Josephine said calmly and Gabriel immediately snapped his mouth shut. "Now, Zadkiel are you going to start talking, or should I make you?" She asked and I sighed. Josephine was scary and it takes a lot from me not to let her scare me.
I sighed again and palmed my face before I bobbed my head. "What do you guys want to know? What are your theories?" I asked and instantly regretted it when I saw their lips curl up in a wicked smirk as they glanced at each other.
"Well well, first things first; our biggest theory is that you have a crush on her," Gabriel said and I stared at him the way I stare at superhero movies; with disinterest.
"On a normal day, Gabe, you are dumb but on days like this when you say that kind of stuff, I begin to wonder how you pass with the best grades in this school," I said and he gasped dramatically. He placed his hand on his chest and began breathing heavily, "there it is, dumbness" I blurted out and his eyes widened dramatically.
"How- how-" he was still putting up with his shenanigans when Josephine smacked the back of his head.
"Theory number two; there seems to be something going on between the two of you that we don't know about" a small smile played at the corners of my lips at her assumption. Trust Josephine to be a step close to the truth all the time.
I was about to give her my responses when a knock came on the door, and we all glanced at each other in surprise. No one comes to the student council room, ever. I cleared my throat and stared at the door when the knock came again, "who is there?"
"It's Jophiel" my eyes immediately diverted to the clock and it was already 5 pm. How could I have forgotten? I slowly turned to the two people I call my friends and they both were staring at me with creepy smiles on their faces while wiggling their brows.
"Cut it out" I sneered and they immediately stopped. "Come in, Jophiel" the door creaked open the next second and Jophiel walked in, holding a note and a Bible.
A look of surprise crossed her face when she saw the other two seated but she immediately covered it up with a smile, "hello Gabriel and Vice president" she greeted and they both waved at her
"Call me Josephine," Josephine said with a smile as she stood up, dragging Gabriel up with her. "We'd get going now, Zadkiel don't forget to go through the letters that were sent. There are about 15 of them" she grinned and I glared at her. Of course, there was something to do but they prioritized their theories.
"I'm sorry, Josephine. But..." Gabriel immediately snatched his hand away from Josephine. "I can't leave these two alone. I'm his accountability partner and I just can't leave him in this vulnerable state of temptation. Teenagers of these days can't..." He didn't get to finish his sentence before Josephine smacked his head and dragged him away by the ear. "Remember I tried to be here for you, my bro!" He yelled as Josephine dragged him away and I palmed my face.
Jophiel chuckled once the door was closed behind them and I arched a brow as I glanced at her. "Gabriel seems like the fun one out of you three" she pointed out and I breathed out a laugh.
"Would I sound mean if I say he's just the stupid one?" She chuckled again and nodded
"Definitely"
"That sucks. Please take a seat" I gestured to one of the chairs in the office and she immediately sat down, "I didn't expect you to be so punctual" she immediately tensed up at my words but managed to brush it off with a smile.
"It's a habit now, being on time prevents bad things from happening," she said trying to sound casual, but I didn't miss the slight shakiness in her voice. "So, here I am. Ruth made me take the Bible and the note. I don't know why since I asked a non-biblical question" she cut right to the chase, expertly changing the topic and I smiled.
She's a smart one. "Well, your question is about God and any question about God can always be answered with the Bible" I opened the drawer and brought out my Bible as well, "do you want to pray together before we start?" I asked even though I already knew what her answer would be.
"I'd rather not" she mumbled and I nodded with a small smile before I bowed my head and muttered my prayers.
"Alright, is God a selfish God or not?" I mused once I was done praying. "Let's start by asking you, why do you think he's a selfish God?"
She smiled and shook her head, "because He only does things when it would glorify him"
I propped my elbows on the desk and rested my jaw on my palms as I stared at her for a few seconds. "Millions of people are alive in this world today and more than half of them don't glorify him but he still keeps them alive. He gave his only begotten son so that man can be saved and won't spend all of eternity in damnation, he did that for man. Our living or dying won't affect his status as God, but the moment we call on him, he comes answering just so we can be okay." I paused and smiled at her. "All that doesn't sound selfish to me."
"He created us, he'd want to keep us safe"
"How many parents abandon their children even though they gave birth to them?" She clenched her jaw at my question and silence immediately descended. A few minutes passed before she slowly let out a breath and smiled.
"Good to know he's a father that didn't abandon his children, but there are still parents that didn't abandon their children and stayed just so they'd be seen as good parents. It's just fronting, nothing superb. They are trash behind closed doors."
"That doesn't seem to be about God," I said after a while and her eyes widened. "You are trying to heap blames on God to feel good about something or to defend something, but your blames don't change the truth about God. He answers when he's called even if he'll receive no thanks for that. A selfish God would not give up his son for people that hate him. A selfish God won't give out his spirit to guide humans that are way below him. You might want to blame him for the bad things that are happening in the world right now, or the bad things that happened to you but don't forget that we humans are the anchors of whatever situation the world is in right now. We chose to mess it up by giving in to greed, God didn't do that to us, we did it to ourselves"
She let out a shaky breath and stared down at her hands, "how are you so sure about what you just said?" She asked and looked up at me. "Why do you speak so fondly, so passionately about God? You speak like you know him personally. Why?" the corners of my lips immediately tugged up in a smile
"That's because I know God, personally. Because I have a relationship with him. And mostly because I've doubted him as well" she held my gaze for a while before she bit down hard on her bottom lip and lowered her gaze. I watched her deliberate and fight with herself for a while before she nodded.
She bobbed her head multiple times before she spoke, "I want to know God as well." She said and without even realizing it, I let out a deep breath of relief. "I want to know all there is to know about God, and then I'd make the conclusion myself, so teach me. I'm willing to learn"
"5 pm to 6 pm every weekday and 4 pm to 6 pm on the weekends," I said, and she nodded.
"That sounds good enough" she packed up her books and stood up. "I guess we are done for today. Thank you so much for leading me a step closer to getting my answers. I'll get going now"
I watched her silently as she opened the door and was about to walk out when I immediately got an instruction from the Holy Spirit. "Jophiel, hold on" I called out and she turned to me, "read the entire book of Luke before you come for our next session. It's in the Bible" I immediately added when I saw the look of confusion on her face.
"Oh, okay. I will. Anything else?" I shook my head and she gave me a tight-lipped smile before she walked out for good.
Once the door closed behind her, I threw my head back and let out a deep breath. Would I be able to do this? Am I going to lead her to the right answers or am I going to lose another soul?
"You did well, Zadkiel" I heard the soft voice of God, and my muscles instantly relaxed. "I am proud of you," He said and a big smile appeared on my face. It was always a warm feeling when Yahweh tells me he loves me, but it hits differently when the Lord of Heaven and Earth tells you he is proud of you.
I felt a new surge of determination course through me and I resolved within myself; I am not going to disappoint Abba by letting another soul go. No matter what it takes. He had trusted me with her and I'm not going to disappoint him. Not this time.
"I won't disappoint you, Abba" I assured him, "just keep holding my hand, I can do anything as long as you are with me"
"I am here. I am always here with you"
